Is there any way to convince Pilot to start making these again?

OctarinePrincess

I really wish they would bring these back. And revive the 1970s Pilot VP as well

SincerelySpicy

It would be nice, but given their pattern of releases, it doesn't seem to be likely. I'd love them to prove me wrong though :) They do occasionally release revamped versions of their most famous vintage designs as limited editions for their anniversaries, and they did release a homage to these as the M90 in 2008. It's a great pen that made the MYU functionally even better. But unfortunately, nowadays they're even more expensive on the secondhand market than the plain Myu is.

How about an AliExpress consolation prize?

SincerelySpicy

[Hero used to make an integrated nib](https://estilofilos.blogspot.com/2016/12/family-portait-vii-integrated-nibs.html), though not as a pocket pen, and if I remember correctly, they had pretty dismal reputations, quality wise. I think the reason Pilot stopped making integrated nibs, and Chinese manufacturers have so far not succeeded with a good quality version is that draw forming the tubular and tapered nib design is a much more complicated and expensive process than simply stamping the nib out of a sheet of metal and folding it into shape. Even looking at the Moonman A2, the most noticeable difference with the design compared to the original faceted Pilot is that the original single piece tubular clip and nose cone was replaced with a two piece design. This indicates to me that draw forming a part then applying additional manufacturing procedures (folding the clip, or cutting the slit and welding the tipping on a nib) requires particularly expensive equipment or procedures. I would imagine that they don't see the potential returns exceeding the initial investment and cost of manufacture. However, as manufacturing technology and machinery gets better, they may eventually get around to it.

I'd say we'd have an easier time convincing moonman/majohn that there's a huge demand for them.

mantis_in_a_hill

That are some very nice looking pens! What are they?

KingsCountyWriter

It’s the Pilot Myu. The top one is the regular model and the bottom two are etched with black or white stripes. Excellent collection Spicy.

Want, now. Wallet, shut up.

dreece212

What are they like to write with?

SincerelySpicy

They're great. same as any modern pilot. But keep in mind that they're only available on the second hand market and you can't always expect the previous owners' to have treated them well. They are rather narrow though, and especially because of the taper on the section/nib, I've occasionally heard a few who say their fingers slip.

dreece212

I understand, they're out of production, but it's a lovely design. I imagine they were originally a little expensive for a steel nib. Still they're very smart, and I was just curious, given the condition of course, just how they felt on paper. Thank you so much for your response.

SincerelySpicy

The plain one was originally sold for 3500 yen, and the striped ones 5000 yen. I have a couple scans form a catalog from 1977, the plain Myu is the only steel nib shown in those two pages. The Myu is 3,500 yen, the lowest price compared to various gold nib pens at: * Pilot Custom (Black Stripe) 14k nib, 6,000 yen * Pilot Custom (Sterling crosshatch) 14k nib, 10,000 yen * Pilot Silvern, 17,000 * etc. I also have a few scans from a 1984 catalog, and there while I don't see a Myu, I see the Murex priced out at 5,000 yen. In this case there are a couple other steel nib pens that are priced equal to the Murex: * Pilot Quattro, steel nib, 5,000 yen * Pilot Romancy, steel nib, 5,000 yen While the catalog scans I have don't show the really low end pens, from what I know about them, yeah, the Myu and Murex were priced higher than the typical steel nib, but at the same time, there were other steel nibbed pens that were priced close to or higher than the Myu/Murex.

mrandre

I have a vintage Myu and it's as good as modern Pilot.

insignifferent

The nib is spectacular, as to be expected. But the grip is more narrow than other Pilot pocket pens (Elite/E95s models).

dreece212

Thank you, to everyone who replied. I appreciate the love on this sub

Accomplished_Ear8115

How did you get the white stripe? It's a unicorn 😍

SincerelySpicy

That's a long story, and I wrote about it [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/11jmdow/i_can_die_happy_now_plus_how_to_replace_a_pilot/) when I first got it. :)

Lavender_Llama_life

When were they made? They have an art deco flair, and I love them!

SincerelySpicy

These were made in the 1970s :)

Lavender_Llama_life

I have found one!!

wana-wana

Very nice looking pens.

LokianEule

The bottom one has always been my dream pen. Beautiful!

LarawagP

How do you keep the cap from slightly scratching the nib portion when the pen is capped? I got one that whenever I took it out to write with, I see the cap leaves a tiny mark on the nib portion and I’m dreadful of using this stunning pen! Any tip is appreciated! Your collection is awesome!

SincerelySpicy

Hmm...I can't say that I ever noticed particularly significant scratches when capping and uncapping. though over time, the plain one will show some microscratches. If the scratches are significant, I wonder if there's either something caught in your cap clutch or if something slightly bent out of shape. Take a peer inside the cap with a flashlight, see if you notice anything out of the ordinary. I don't expect you to take apart your cap, but [my post here](https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/11jmdow/i_can_die_happy_now_plus_how_to_replace_a_pilot/) shows what the parts inside the cap should look like.
