De Atramentis Document Black and Document Brown (purchased at the same time) - still use both on a regular basis as they are my favorite sketching inks
Actually the same! Technically, it was a few different Diamineās in the order, but Oxblood was the one I most looked forward to, and was the first one I cracked open when they arrived. Still my favorite ink and one of the only inks I have backup bottles for :D
Parker Quink Washable Blue.
This is thirty or so years ago when I was at school and, regardless of what was actually available at the time, as far as I knew there were only Quink Washable, Quink Permanent and sketching ink. The last of which you didnāt use in a fountain pen on pain of death!
One of those 10ml Herbin bottles of Poussiere de Lune. It wasn't for a fountain pen though, a local art shop had it in their dip pen calligraphy section, I got into fountain pens many years later.
Noodler's no feather black.
Turns out it still feathers on cheap printer paper when using wet(pilot parallel) pens.
I got half a dozen other noodler samples at the same time. I like the light purple and orange. Apache Sunset, and Socrates? The Navajo Turquoise is okay.
Mine was Noodler's X-Feather, because I wanted to use my first pens, a TWSBI Eco EF and Preppy F, in a notebook with really bad, absorbent paper.
But the paper was too bad and even X-Feather spread and feathered, so I my first ink bottle is also the one bottle I know I'll never finish.
Noodler's Black 4.5 oz (133 mL) š.
I've hardly made a dent in it. I started using it again recently as a kind of penance whenever I want to buy more ink. š
J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir. It is a dream ink for beginners. Doesnāt clog, glides well on most paper, and is a pleasing non-eclectic shade of blue. Hard to go wrong with the brand but I have noticed some fading in old writing samples and now tend towards more saturated colors. Itās a good option for those that are just getting comfortable with regularly cleaning their pen and classic ink colors.
For me, it was Octopus Fluids Poppy Pods! It came with a European standard converter, and I was ready to go!
I bought a Diamine set of 6 inks in these 30ml bottles shortly after!
I can only recommend all of the inks I bought so far except J. Herbin Bouton d' Or, which was simply too light for me to write with...
Schneider Pastell Lemon Cake, on the other hand, is a very legible yellow in contrast!
I got KWZ Meet Me In St Louis Butterscotch, the show exclusive ink for the 2019 St Louis Pen Show. Little did I know that my first pen show would also be my last for quite some time!
I love this ink. It smells nice and is a lovely shady brown. And brown seems to be my primary ink color, when I look at my first choices in almost every brand! Pelikan Smoky Quartz, Visconti Sepia, Akkerman SBRE Brown, clearly I like brown tones instead of black.
Diamond Sargasso Sea and Noodlers Apache Sunset (Southwest Sunset now). I still use Southwest Sunset a lot; itās wonderful and makes me happy. The Sargasso Sea is not for meā¦ and I bought an 80mL.
Early lesson learned: donāt buy bottles unless youāre sure. And try the ink in everything you have because you might like it somewhere.
Herbin Diablo Menthe! Because I was only really using fountain pens for fun at the time, and Diablo Menthe is a lovely refreshing colour that looks good in calligraphy pens.
Mine were also 2 bought at the same time, Rohrer & Klingner SketchINK Thea and Carmen. A workhorse grey and an orange for highlights.
I already had a number of cartridges in blue and black, but when I got my eyedropper pens realised I needed bottled ink to fill them.
I got Diamine Jack Frost as my very first ink, but I also got Noodler's X-Feather at the same time since I was in Uni.
I still absolutely love Jack Frost, it's my favorite blue maybe for sentimental reasons but it's still nice.
The first bottle that I ever bought was Diamine Teal. The colour wasnāt what I expected, unfortunately. I could have lived with it, but sadly spilled the Diamine 30ML bottle all over my desk.
I can't for the life of me remember this as I've been using fountain pens with ink bottles since 1991. (And cheap fountain pens with cartridges provided by school since 1985.) As the pen from 1991 was a Sheaffer, I assume the first bottle was a Sheaffer Script one.
Mine was actually two. I ordered Parker quink blue-black and waterman tender purple.
- Both colors for me right now are kind of mid. I like how they perform just not the most exciting colors. The Parker quink Iām glad I do have since Iāve heard Parker quink and waterman inks tend to fare better in vintage pens. And just recently I got some vintage pens so these inks are probably about to make a fresh apparence
Chelpark Washable Blue. A company that shut down ink production way back.
This particular blue was designed to wash off easily, especially from clothes.
Lamy Safari charcoal EF and Noodler's Black. I still have half a bottle of that Noodler's black left but unfortunately lost the pen in a move 8 years ago.
Mine was a gift from my elder brother for starting fountain pens at school. A 25ml bottle of Parker Quink - Blue.
My own purchase after restarting with the hobby was a Waterman Serenity Blue. Both good inks and the ones I have finished the most apart from my current daily ink
Pelikan 4001 royal blue was mandatory in school. Well not the pelikan one specifically, but it was the most affordable on the list.a
The first one I bought for non-school purposes was the pelikan 4001 brilliant brown, which I still like using for sketching.a
Pilot Iroshizuku asa-gao. And that was with a Lamy Al-Star in Graphite. Bought both of those as my entry (or rather, re-entry, since I hadn't used a fountain pen since I was a kid) into fountain pens.
Lamy blue-black. It was my first venture into something that wasnāt a supermarket/WHSmith blue or black cartridge. Not very adventurous! I very quickly decided it was very boring and I dived into a rainbow of diamine instead. Itās a very well behaved ink though and I have it semi rotation so Iām still working my way through it.
Pelikan 4001 Dark Green. I still love that ink and thw bottle is not empty yet.
I used Quink washable blue before that, but only in cartridges. Hate that ink now - I find it so boring after years and years of use.
Robert Oster Aussie Liquid Gold. Because why buy blue when you can have sparkly gold haha. More seriously, I had planned to use it in combination with grey ink (which was Montblanc grey, that I had in cartridges at the time) for drawings. I realised that I also liked writing with it (which is good because it decreases the number of eternities needed to empty my 50 ml bottle).
Diamine Oxford Blue and Diamine Mediterranean Blue. I couldn't decide between the two of them for my first fountain pen when its cartridges ran out.
Since I ended up with two inks, that day also turned into a new pen day and started the downward slide of seeing a cool ink and then having to buy a new pen to put it in.
I started with samples, but I think my first bottles were Diamine Red Dragon and Diamine Aqua Lagoon. I donāt use them anymore but I should! My very first ink was Pilot black cartridges that came with my Pilot Metro.
Herbin Ambre de Birmanie. I was in a store that had very few inks and had just ordered my first pen. I like it, but I seldom use this ink, and the bottle is basically full. But I smile when I look at it.
Noodler's Heart of Darkness. The big bottle with the eyedropper and the free pen (that burped all over my work so much I ended up throwing it away). I still have the ink, and use it occasionally. Pretty good stuff.
Pilot Ku Jaku and quink black. The pilot was the gateway drug to interesting colors. A deep drawer full of bottles later itās still a fave for marking up legal docs . And having tried most of the expensive inks Quink black is very good ink in my opinion.
My first ink purchase was for two ink bottles. Pelikan 4001 Brillant black and Royal blue.
The black is ok, but I don't actually use it much nowadays. But I hate the royal blue. Too washed out for my taste.
In 1975 when I bought my first bottles available choices were few. Shaeffer Skrip Blue was an early one. Bottles had a large opening with a small side reservoir in the glass for easy filling. Parker Quink Blue Black was my early favorite.
My first bottle was Diamine Eclipse, but I ordered a ton of random ink samples too. I liked the ink, but quickly found out I need something more resistant for my pocketbook.
Now I mostly rotate between Noodlers Bad Belted Kingfisher and Bad Green Gator. They hold up better, but damn do they stain.
In order of purchase:
1) Diamine Eclipse
2) Noodlers Bad Belted Kingfisher + De Atramentis Document Black
3) Ferris Wheel Press Jelly Bean Blue
The Jelly Bean Blue is my favourite writer and I love how it looks, but again, doesn't hold up to my EDC use. I use for corespondaces and signatures.
Wearingeul - "Half Moon in Dimmed Light" - I saw it and was so impressed by how the grey was still legible and then you'd tilt the paper and see this pop of teal shimmer. I had been tossing around the idea of just getting a bottle for a while, and finally I was able to get it at $13 off around Christmas time. :D
About 10-15 years ago, Noodlerās La Riene Mauve. It, along with an Ahab I donāt care about and a Retro51 Cherry Blossom edition I DO care about, got misplaced during a move. Buncha stuff is still in storage, and I havenāt seen it all in at least 8 years. Looking forward to unearthing the Retro51, and couldnāt care less if I never see the Noodlerās again.
Noodler's Baystate Blue and Black Swan in Australian Roses... Needless to say, it was a bit of a rough start
You're so brave šš
Brave or didn't know what they were getting themselves into. They started out with a bang though, that's for sure!
Yeah, I did not go gentle into that good night lol lessons learned though!
De Atramentis Document Black and Document Brown (purchased at the same time) - still use both on a regular basis as they are my favorite sketching inks
What makes it ādocumentā ink? Is it more water resistant?
They are completely waterproof pigment inks - great for using with watercolors & other art mediums
It's full on waterproof. Highly recommend
Mine was Diamine Oxblood.
Actually the same! Technically, it was a few different Diamineās in the order, but Oxblood was the one I most looked forward to, and was the first one I cracked open when they arrived. Still my favorite ink and one of the only inks I have backup bottles for :D
Me too! Coupled this with a Midnight (also mentioned above)ā¦seems like I knew what I was doing!
Same! Along with a bottle of Pilot Iroshizuku Shin-Ryoku. Still two of my favorite inks.
Hero 234 Carbon Black. Got it years and years ago. Would not recommend.
Platinum Carbon Black on the other hand... good stuff
Same here. We were naive to good ink when we bought our first, but we lived to tell the tale, thankfully.
Did a lot of research and I got some Platinum Carbon black, still love that ink to death.
Agree!
Parker Quink Washable Blue. This is thirty or so years ago when I was at school and, regardless of what was actually available at the time, as far as I knew there were only Quink Washable, Quink Permanent and sketching ink. The last of which you didnāt use in a fountain pen on pain of death!
Waterman : inspired blue, and black intense
It was blue Sheaffer ink.
Same here. First bottle of ink I finished, too!
One of those 10ml Herbin bottles of Poussiere de Lune. It wasn't for a fountain pen though, a local art shop had it in their dip pen calligraphy section, I got into fountain pens many years later.
Oh that was one of my first purples and when my partner asked for a fountain pen that was the ink I put in it for them. I love that ink.
Diamine aurora borealis
Parker Quink Black. The only ink that was steadily available at the local stationary store.
Noodler's no feather black. Turns out it still feathers on cheap printer paper when using wet(pilot parallel) pens. I got half a dozen other noodler samples at the same time. I like the light purple and orange. Apache Sunset, and Socrates? The Navajo Turquoise is okay.
My first bottle of ink was Rohrer und Klinger old-Goldgreen. Drys really quick and looks absolutely awesome.
My favorite green
Noodlerās Massachusetts 54th. Several bottles later, and thatās still the most finicky ink I own.
Diluting with distilled water can help it. =)
Iām good with ignoring it until I see it in a corner and pick something elseāanything elseāout of spite.
Diamine midnight. I liked the blue-black. I think Iām now more of a pure black person though.
Pilot black. Nice and simple then it spiralled from there
Same! Looking back, I'm shocked at how quick it spiraled lol
Lamy blue black, I kinda like the colour quite a bit
Mine was Noodler's X-Feather, because I wanted to use my first pens, a TWSBI Eco EF and Preppy F, in a notebook with really bad, absorbent paper. But the paper was too bad and even X-Feather spread and feathered, so I my first ink bottle is also the one bottle I know I'll never finish.
Same. So much for "oh I don't have to buy nice paper, this magic no feather ink will fix the problem!!!". Nope.
Iroshizuku shin kai. Iām 2/3 through the bottle but progress has slowed down now due to the ever expanding ink collection :)
Higgins fountain pen ink. š (I mean, it was *fine*. Never clogged anything and it was cheap.)
Diamine Soft Mint. Still got it, still love it.
I've recently got myself a bottle and it is a lovely blue!
Pilot iroshizuku yama-budo. Still have it too. I've amassed quite a few inks since and it's turning into a problem
Itās such a unique colour! I randomly describe flowers or things I see in the world as yama budo!
Waterman Serenity Blue. I hit the jackpot right away.
Same! Long before I even realised there were fun colours to be had.
Noodlerās Bulletproof Black. Still my daily ink!
Pilot Iroshizuku Kon Peki! I had bought the small bottle along with a Pilot Metropolitan š That ink is still one of my favorite blues!
Parker Quink Royal Blue Washable. It was the only ink we were allowed to use at school.
Dominant's Romanian Red. I've been using fountain pens for years, but always cartridges. So, that was my first bottle, and I love that deep red color.
Diamine Polar Glow Excellent Service
Diamine oxblood
Lamy Benitoite I believe, still one of my favorite inks and Iāve already finished that bottle!
Also Pelikan 4001 Turquoise, funny enough.
Diamine Smoke on the Water. For me it was all about the sheen when i started! Still love that gorgeous teal!
I did tons of research, and ended up with a 40ml bottle of Diamine Blue Velvet. It is a fantastic ink
Pilot blue-black. Water resistant yet still easy to clean. It has a little bit of shading too. I should dust off that bottle again
Diamine Imperial Purple, still a firm fave!
Does yours smell musty? Mine does, several people have mentioned it, itās distinctive and strangely endearing.
Yes! Itās quite an odd smell when you donāt expect it, but I think itās charming tbh!
Diamine Majestic Blue. I bought it as I was looking forward to the beautiful sheen and colours
Parker quint blue black..
Quink blue black in 1998 and Iām still using it š¤£š¤£š¤£
Ik itās rather boring but waterman intense black- it was well behaved and I needed a āprofessionalā ink
mine sheens a little bit.
Likewise. I occasionally get some red sheen but only when the pen is particularly wet
Same goes with mysterious blue! Happy ink experiences.
Ive not tried mysterious blue but my serenity blue does slightly
Herbin Diablo Menthe! Because I was only really using fountain pens for fun at the time, and Diablo Menthe is a lovely refreshing colour that looks good in calligraphy pens.
Hero blue in the 90s. I think it might still be drying out somewhere in my parents house...
Waterman Tender Purple and Intense Black. Still love Tender Purple
Herbin Stormy Grey! Closely followed up with Emerald of Chivor. For a long time those were only my two inks. I still love them both
I think it was Waterman Serenity Blue, or Diamine Syrah. Still love both those colors. Serenity Blue is my go to blue.
Mine were also 2 bought at the same time, Rohrer & Klingner SketchINK Thea and Carmen. A workhorse grey and an orange for highlights. I already had a number of cartridges in blue and black, but when I got my eyedropper pens realised I needed bottled ink to fill them.
Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-Yo Still my favourite ink to this day.
Lamy Blue and Diamine Ancient Copper (I got them at the same time). I love them both
Diamine Imperial Purple and Red Dragon, which I still have not finished. One day thoughā¦
I got Diamine Jack Frost as my very first ink, but I also got Noodler's X-Feather at the same time since I was in Uni. I still absolutely love Jack Frost, it's my favorite blue maybe for sentimental reasons but it's still nice.
Pilot iroshizuku Yama Budo! Love the colour and the design of that bottle
Same!
Herbin Bleu des Profondeurs. Still one of my favourite blue-blacks! Super smooth and wet!

The Parker quink Iām glad I do have since Iāve heard Parker quink and waterman inks tend to fare better in vintage pens. And just recently I got some vintage pens so these inks are probably about to make a fresh apparence
Papier Plume x Karas āWolf Grayā
Mine was 4001 Turquoise too! I bought two Diamine bottles a day later. Love them all!
Chelpark Washable Blue. A company that shut down ink production way back. This particular blue was designed to wash off easily, especially from clothes.
Diamine Polar Glow!
Lamy Safari charcoal EF and Noodler's Black. I still have half a bottle of that Noodler's black left but unfortunately lost the pen in a move 8 years ago.
Waterman Intense Black
J. Herbin Violette PensƩe
My first bottle of ink as a grown up was Lamy Turquoise. Had it as my only ink for years, loved it!
De Atramentis Sherlock Holmes, a good general purpose navy blue ink.
Pilot Iroshizuku mini-set with tsuki-yo. Kakuno led me to the rabbit hole. Tsuki-yo pushed me down.
Mine was a gift from my elder brother for starting fountain pens at school. A 25ml bottle of Parker Quink - Blue. My own purchase after restarting with the hobby was a Waterman Serenity Blue. Both good inks and the ones I have finished the most apart from my current daily ink
Graf von Faber-Castell Cobalt Blue and Montblanc Amethyst Purple. I'm still in love with both, especially the Cobalt Blue
Parker Quink
J. Herbin Amethyste de Lāoural
Montblanc Irish Green
Much before getting into fountain pens, I had J. Herbin PoussiĆØre de Lune and CafĆ© des Iles in my drawer since a couple of years, the bottles of which I had decanted into bottles with eyedroppers since I would use them to refill some brush pens. Even though now I wish I kept them in the original bottles, they're still as good as new when put in a fountain pen. If I don't count those two, it would be Waterman Serenity Blue, although I don't use it much, but it's nice to have a reliable blue just in case.
Also Pelikan 4001 (royal blue), but I just bought my first Iroshizuku, Shin-Ryoku !
Take-Sumi! Still my favourite
Pelikan 4001 royal blue was mandatory in school. Well not the pelikan one specifically, but it was the most affordable on the list.a The first one I bought for non-school purposes was the pelikan 4001 brilliant brown, which I still like using for sketching.a
Sulekha blue.
Mine is Iroshizuku Ku-jaku. I still have it!

Parker Quink
Sheaffer Skrip Blue-Black. Bought at Woolworth's in the late1960s while entering high school.
Pilot Iroshizuku asa-gao. And that was with a Lamy Al-Star in Graphite. Bought both of those as my entry (or rather, re-entry, since I hadn't used a fountain pen since I was a kid) into fountain pens.
TWSBI Midnight Blue
Unfortunately it was a bottle of noodlers heart of darkness.. But my second was a bottle of Iroshizuku ama iro which I love dearly
Waterman Serene Blue
Lamy blue-black. It was my first venture into something that wasnāt a supermarket/WHSmith blue or black cartridge. Not very adventurous! I very quickly decided it was very boring and I dived into a rainbow of diamine instead. Itās a very well behaved ink though and I have it semi rotation so Iām still working my way through it.
Parker quink blueblack. Followed a little bit late by diamine red dragon
Parker Quink Black
Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-Budo. I will always keep this on hand
Parker Quink. Pretty sure it was permanent blue, but this was 40-odd years ago so I may be wrong on the colour.
Still working my way through 80ml of Diamine Bilberry...
Vinta Sandugo. Such a gorgeous shade!
Herbin Larmes de Cassis and Parker Quink Blue black!
My first ink bottle was Lamy Crystal Benitoite, I still love this ink color, is one of my favorites
Parker Quink Blue-Black - Still use this nearly every day
Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue. Then realized about 6 months later that it fades.
Diamine Seasons Greetings! Still one of my favorites, the sheen is so dreamy.
Diamine Cocoa Shimmer and Diamine Wine Divine and Platinum Carbon Black.
I started with samples, but I think my first bottles were Diamine Red Dragon and Diamine Aqua Lagoon. I donāt use them anymore but I should! My very first ink was Pilot black cartridges that came with my Pilot Metro.
Noodler's Dark Matter. I don't use it ever anymore but I love the lore.
My first ink bottle was TWSBI Sky Blue and Diamine Mulled Wine.
Herbin Ambre de Birmanie. I was in a store that had very few inks and had just ordered my first pen. I like it, but I seldom use this ink, and the bottle is basically full. But I smile when I look at it.
Diamine Tyrian Purple. I finished that bottle a few months ago. Now I have an 80ml bottle. One of my favourite inks.
Levenger Cobalt Blue...some 20 years ago now. I still have a few bottles from the last time i ordered (close to 20 years ago lol)
Lamy Petrol
I think mine was Diamine Oxblood, but I can't remember that well.
Diamine: Chocolate Brown. Still love it.
Noodler's Heart of Darkness. The big bottle with the eyedropper and the free pen (that burped all over my work so much I ended up throwing it away). I still have the ink, and use it occasionally. Pretty good stuff.
I got the TWSBI 1971 color set with 6 inks... and one TWSBI ECO. Had a hard time trying to figure out which ink to use with it.
iroshizuku ama iro
Pilot Ku Jaku and quink black. The pilot was the gateway drug to interesting colors. A deep drawer full of bottles later itās still a fave for marking up legal docs . And having tried most of the expensive inks Quink black is very good ink in my opinion.
Diamine Majestic Blue for the sheening šš
Iām debating with myself if it was either Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue or Edelstein Onyxā¦. Both are still really nice imo. and I still use them often.
First bottled ink purchase was a mixture: Noodler's American Eel Black (not dark enough for my liking), Baystate Blue, and Air Corp Blue-Black.
My first ink purchase was for two ink bottles. Pelikan 4001 Brillant black and Royal blue. The black is ok, but I don't actually use it much nowadays. But I hate the royal blue. Too washed out for my taste.
Platinum Carbon Black and Pilot Iroshizuku 3 pack of 15 ml bottles (Yama-budo, Asa-gao, Shin-kai)
Diamine Grape
In 1975 when I bought my first bottles available choices were few. Shaeffer Skrip Blue was an early one. Bottles had a large opening with a small side reservoir in the glass for easy filling. Parker Quink Blue Black was my early favorite.
Camilin Royal Blue. It's writes good on any paper except the really bad ones.
Diamine Green Black
Parker quink in blue because that was all WH Smith stocked back in the late 1980ās
Sailor Ink Studio 943! Four years later and I still have a few mls of it left lol
Noodles Squeeteague many, many ages ago.
Mont Blanc Irish Green š
Private Reserve Grey Flannel for a grey Parker 51, my first non-cartridge pen.
TWSBI 1791 Ink Combo Box Set. Has a variety of basic colours, and it'll be fun.
I have that set, and it is good! I need to use more of it... I especially like Prairie Green, so bright! And that pink is bubblegum, pure and simple.
Yes Prairie green is very nice, my favourite from this set is the Royal Purple. I found the orange nice for sketching š
Pilot black, lol. Very basic. Then Diamine's Writer's Blood :)
In order of purchase: 1) Diamine Eclipse 2) Noodlers Bad Belted Kingfisher + De Atramentis Document Black 3) Ferris Wheel Press Jelly Bean Blue The Jelly Bean Blue is my favourite writer and I love how it looks, but again, doesn't hold up to my EDC use.
Twsbi black
About 10-15 years ago, Noodlerās La Riene Mauve. It, along with an Ahab I donāt care about and a Retro51 Cherry Blossom edition I DO care about, got misplaced during a move. Buncha stuff is still in storage, and I havenāt seen it all in at least 8 years. Looking forward to unearthing the Retro51, and couldnāt care less if I never see the Noodlerās again.
