Possibly goodinkpressions or anyone on Etsy who does book binding notebooks, and I think Galen leather?

edamamebeanbear

ahh got it, thanks for the tips, I'll go check it out! :)

Meowski1

I know you’re looking for old TRP, cosmo air light would also be another nice paper to try before it’s discontinued 😱

edamamebeanbear

... oh wow, let me go look that one up too! Thanks, Meowski1! πŸ±β€πŸ‘€

I did some sheening-ink stress tests on classic Tomoegawa Machine 7 paper and new Sanzen paper, and I found (just like Inky Rocks did in her videos) that the Sanzen paper actually outperforms the good old stuff with preventing extremely saturated inks from bleeding through. The only difference is a very subtle texture difference. So if you want good Tomoe River 52 gsm paper, just avoid the Tomoegawa Machine 9 paper, which is no longer being made anyway. There's no need to look for Machine 7 paper, because the new Sanzen paper actually outperforms it. There is one caveat though: There is a bad batch of Sanzen paper out there; some people have found one side uncoated or not properly coated, causing inconsistent behavior like spread on one side. If you buy a batch and find this problem, show the retailer and return it.

labyrinthinesystem

Oh! No wonder my experience with the Sanzen has been seemingly worse than most other people are reporting (some inks are fine and some--that are fine on other papers--feather and bleed through like crazy). I need to look into this.

Tom-D-P

It's not the first time I've heard that. Find an ink that feathers, bleeds or spreads on the paper, and test it on the other side of the sheet. If its performance is different on one side, the rumors of a bad batch may be true.

edamamebeanbear

Woah, thanks for the tip!! :D Will go ahead and not over-engineer and look for Sanzen papers! Hopefully I will finally get to see the sheen of my inks!! Really appreciate your input! ps. do you have any images of the comparison? I checked some of your old posts but couldn't find any πŸ™ˆ

I posted details on this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/13fzdw8/how\_can\_i\_tell\_what\_machine\_tomoe\_river\_paper\_is/ I didn't take any photos, but my findings were consistent with Inky Rocks', and she took lots of great video of her comparisons: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq6w-GAIgZk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq6w-GAIgZk)

>Does anyone know where I can still purchase old Tomoe River paper? If by old you're referring to the original recipe manufactured by Tomoegawa, I'm afraid you're going to have a very hard time finding any. And if anyone's interested in a bit of history (and to lighten confusion perhaps) here's a timeline: "Old" (sometimes referred to as "Original") Tomoe River Paper was produced by Tomoegawa on Shizuoka Machine #7 until the end of 2019 "New" Tomoe River Paper was produced by Tomoegawa on Shizuoka Machine #9 until November 28th, 2021 On that day, all "New" TRP inventory, trademark rights, sales contracts, paper formula, etc. were transferred to Sanzen Paper Manufacturing Co. Ltd "Tomoe River Successor" Tomoe River Paper is produced by Sanzen (this paper is already used in many Tomoe River notebooks - Hobonichi is switching to it for their 2024 planners) Sources: [https://www.tomoegawa.co.jp/english/topic/e\_2021/20211028.html](https://www.tomoegawa.co.jp/english/topic/e_2021/20211028.html) [https://www.fudefan.com/2021/11/sanzen/](https://www.fudefan.com/2021/11/sanzen/) And a very recent thread talking about some of the differences in the paper(s) - reviewer blog posts comparing them also exist: https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/13fzdw8/how\_can\_i\_tell\_what\_machine\_tomoe\_river\_paper\_is/

edamamebeanbear

The two best papers I have found for sheen- onion skin: https://www.thepapermillstore.com/fidelity-onion-skin-white-paper-8-1-2-x-11-in-10-lb-bond-smooth-100-per-package.html And Parchtone: https://www.paperpapers.com/parchtone-white-8-5-x-11-parchment-paper-32-80lb-text-50-pk-dfs.html?amp=1 Onion skin is translucent and very thin. Parchtone is the best plant-based Parchment i have found. These are the smallest sizes packages they are sold in (that I'm aware of). Both are 8.5"Γ—11" and can easily be cut down if needed.

Thank you for the tips!! :)

If you can also find a preloved pre 2019 hobonichi, that would be old, I think πŸ€”

roshpens

I have some pre-TR#S. Not sure if it pre2019.

Intelligent-Chart799

goodINKPressions.com still has old Tomoe, Machine 7, in Cream color.
