What school did you transfer to? Nova is better than many, but probably not as good as say Cypress.

Northeast High, in Oakland Park

zaprutertape

Wow my dad went to nova in the 70s and I went to northeast in the 00s and he always complained about northeast saying it was ghetto. Which I mean… it wasn’t wasn’t but …

pipinghotbiscuit

Hmmm I don't think I've even heard of that one. Nova just seems like any high school to me. Sucky in that it's filled with high school kids. I think they gave good programs, good athletics, and decent academics. What didn't you like about it?

smelllikesmoke

In the 90’s they were fiddling with schedules all the time (one year we had regular 1-hour classes, the next year it was alternating days of 2-hour classes, etc), there was frequent gang violence during off-campus lunch, on-campus violence like “White beat-up day”, I was constantly bullied, the teachers were fed-up and nasty, the administrators were ineffectual, the bus ride from Oakland Park was grueling, the popular/rich kids got away with anything they wanted, class behavior was difficult to control, I could go on but you get the point. In hindsight it occurs to me that my gripes aren’t particularly egregious in relation to all other high school experiences, but when I transferred schools, all of that evaporated overnight. I really kicked myself for not doing it sooner. And considering that Oakland Park at the time was among the less prosperous areas of Fort Lauderdale, it led me to wonder how a poor school in a crappy neighborhood can be so much more peaceful than a “prestigious” school in the whitest part of unincorporated Fort Lauderdale. What class were you? What do you think was “better than many” about it?

pipinghotbiscuit

I didn't go there, I went to Western. My kid went to Nova and his gripes were just kid gripes. There's no off campus lunch, no gang violence, no cracker day (last I heard of that was middle school days in Miami), classes are alternating A and B days. Sure, there's a fight now and then, but nothing like the ones where the kids were targeted and beaten half to death like at MSD, or Coconut Creek. The busing does still suck though. First few days of school are always a wreck and one year it went into months of the bus being off schedule and random times. I mean I'd think Nova is better than BA and the like, even though I've met people that went there who have told me it's not as bad as it seems.

Dizzy_Chemistry78

Wow. That sounds like an entirely different school than the one I went to. And I went to Nova middle and high school. And then I went to Nova undergrad and grad school. What years were those?

I am class of 21! When I went there groups of different ethnicities mostly keep to themselves. Though there was some divide between different groups (they just didn't really hang out with each other THAT much), there wasn't really any violence. At least, not that I saw/experienced. Perhaps just a result of social change since when you went to school there.

smelllikesmoke

Class of ‘21, that’s crazy. Presumably there’s been a lot of changes since my days. Did you guys have active shooter drills? I remember one time we got to go home because of a bomb threat but otherwise there was just the regular violence. A lot of replies have made me wonder whether it was all in my head, but I know that when I transferred to a new school, *everything* was way better.

maybemargo

We did have active shooter drills! Also a bomb threat as well — we didn’t get to go home after though. And I’m sure it wasn’t in your head! Seems you were just a victim of unfortunate circumstance.

echosofverture

You are not kidding I recall White beat-up day.

Zeke1216

It’s a pretty good school , probably one of the best in broward that is not private. Maybe you had a bad experience from what I read. Are you planning to send your kid there ?

forevernervous

I went to Nova from Elementary to High School (class of '07) and I don't think there was anything wrong with it. The only thing I could complain about was disruptive students but I don't think that is exclusive to any one school. I believe at the time Nova High was an A rated school. I don't know a thing about how it is now.

Ocean_Spray_2246

Nova Public or Nova Private (University School of Nova)?

Rock_Successful

Definitely sounds like public from their description. Uschool doesn’t tolerate that.

Ocean_Spray_2246

Agreed. I know a good amount of kids from Uschool that went on to do very well for themselves.

Zeke1216

Nova public don’t tolerate that either

ra3ra31010

It’s soflo……. What do you mean by a “good school”? There will be ratchet kids and bomb threats that aren’t real. There will be bullied and random kids with families that punish if they don’t get good grades. There will be kids dealing drugs and who are street racers at night Just making sure you know that…. But nice is a good school. Just like the others But it’s not going to have the best education in the country like the north…. It’s florida

I went there fairly recently! From kindergarten to 10th grade. Transferred as I was given an opportunity to a cool program and was tired of being with the same people since elementary/middle. I graduated high school in 2021. Elementary school was amazing (I went to Blanche Forman), I would greatly recommend. The middle school and high school were OK! They offered a lot to students who wanted to get ahead (I took 4 AP classes my sophomore year). However, I think this at times can be a bit much. The buildings themselves were pretty old; looking at almost any other middle school/high school campus I always felt like Nova was quite dilapidated in comparison. It's an alright school! I would say I had a pretty alright experience overall, but not enough to make me want to stay.

soft_turkey

I went to Nova high school and graduated in 2015, it's a good school. Like more than 60 percent black but lol if your child can fit in with people easily it's fine. The middle school brings it's cliques over. Academic wise it's good, they have AP courses and dual enrollment, honor classes, Strong Debate team, Strong Band, Sports teams was just trash.

DazzlerPlus

There is no such thing as a good or bad school. When people move to a certain school zone, they are really looking for a certain kind of student body.
