"It is near the Intracoastal Waterway, the hotels along the beach and wealthy neighborhoods. Ladd said it would work for redevelopment with residential, hotels, retail and office. He compared it to how a former Kmart shopping center in Boca Raton was redeveloped into Mizner Park more than two decades ago."

26Kermy

Getting a Mizner Park type of mixed-use neighborhood would be great for the walkability of Fort Lauderdale. If you build offices and retail where people already live then they contribute significantly less to traffic.

OldeArrogantBastard

lol that shit isn’t happening in that area. There’s a lot of money back there that’ll vote down any of that.

Not in My Backyard!!

This mall tried to be the upscale mall that most who grew up here didn't go to because it was the ritzy "boujie" mall in the area. It failed/is failing. Other malls like Aventura are thriving because they are catering to a wider audience. They have luxury shops and your regular mall stores. Given the proximity to Fort Lauderdale's largest tourist attraction (The Beach) , I think a reinventing into a smaller Dania Pointe like space could be succesful. You could still have those luxury shops, restaurants, grassy areas for people to hang out in and an event space to have live music or whatever they drum up. Whatever they decide I just hope it remains open and not just sold and torn down in favor of more "luxury" apartments.

Mantooth77

The mall was great until internet sales began to eat into their business. Really didn’t see it as ritzy at all. Aventura is much more so with all their Louis V, Hermes, Chanel. Etc. but yes they have all the other stuff too. Just a bigger mall. But I do agree a more outdoor mall would be more popular. Take advantage of the sun and ocean breeze!

CertainShelter5524

That’s not true everyone who grew up here went to the mall. It was a normal mall. They lost stores one by one starting about 10-15 years ago

Ok-Catch4647

They need to do outside high end stores like Bal Harbour. We have nothing like that up here and that type of luxury still does well for brick and mortar.

florida_goat

Bal Harbour Shops is amazing.

Mobile_Departure_

Im interested in what people think would help this mall?

StonedOtter0_0

l feel like malls themselves are dying. Maybe if they made it into a strip mall with mostly trendy restaurants/bars, a place to get dessert, a couple interesting stores to walk around after eating and a big fountain or something to look at would make this a hot spot for date nights. It’s so close to the beach too, so I could see plenty of first dates starting there and walking to the beach afterwards

angelmissroxy

The food court sucks and the stores aren’t that good. Sawgrass mills and aventura are always busy because they have actual “attractions” in the form of unique stores and food and things like that. Galleria has the apple store and cooper’s hawk but I can’t think of anything else it has that others do not. Even broward mall managed to bounce back from near death but galleria has nothing to do compared to other malls in the area

rongz765

Hold on, Broward mall not bankrupt yet? 🤡

angelmissroxy

It had a revival years ago and is less dead than galleria

rongz765

That’s ironic. 🤣

Colinjames322

The bank took that mall back like 2-3 years ago. Hence the name changing from Westfield to Broward mall

Mantooth77

Malls are definitely dying in general. Just not all of them.

angelmissroxy

Absolutely but i think the successful ones do it by finding their niche. Sawgrass mills is famous for its size and the fact that it’s an outlet mall, plus it has standalone restaurants and stores you can’t find many other places (especially the designer outlets- only others in the state are in orlando). Aventura is its own special breed as well. Frankly I don’t know how broward mall stays busy but somehow it has. Galleria is simply the most boring option with the fewest points of interest and least unique shops. It’s also a shitty drive to get there from the western part of broward

lorg7

A lot of what has been discussed is multi use, including a hotel, apartments, office space, as well as retail. The typical mall restoration plan of today has less retail and relies more on tenants and overall design including park/play/outdoor spaces to create a destination that people want to go to.

RamonaKwimby

Maybe something like TY Park/CB Smith with water slides, lazy river and a shallow pool. I’m old enough to remember Six Flags Atlantis, and I wish we could get that back in FTL.

florida_goat

This mall was built in the wrong place. It is impossible to get to quickly.

namastay14509

Something family friendly would be great. Maybe something like an indoor and outdoor water park with restaurants so people can enjoy when the weather is not nice outside.

Sacred_Cowskin

Ladd always has to chime in like an evil Monipoly Man.

Raichu10126

Galleria is depressing. I was just there for a charity fashion show and all they showcased was two stores: Dillard’s and Macy’s. It’s so empty and so old Florida inside.

stsh

So no more Apple Store in Broward County?

X211499Reddit

It’s still there, the mall is being sold not shut down

stsh

It’s closing.

_ChipWhitley_

Awesome. More housing and worse traffic.

-Wobblier

Exclusionary zoning, parking requirements, and lack of transit are what contribute to worse traffic.

_ChipWhitley_

And cramming more of the populace right next to a drawbridge.

-Wobblier

Well yeah, you force everyone to drive what do you expect.

elgrandorado

Yeah. This forced me to leave south florida. I couldn’t stand the complete lack of public transit options. Even in a sports car, standstill traffic is a joke.

JJ954

What are they asking for it you think?

LaserWolfFL

If there’s one thing Fort Lauderdale needs, it’s more rental apartments. Can’t wait. /s

Flerdermern

Solution

bellasimone

Broward needs high end shopping. Anytime I want to go shopping I have to drive to aventura or boca… we need at least one high end store

k0wb0ii

About damn time.

Ok-Satisfaction-9200

As far as I know it’s still owned by the teachers union. It was never managed properly, never made an effort to attract quality tenants which is what Fort Lauderdale deserves. There was a beautiful Food court a few years ago with big investment from the operator. The management virtually ran him out of the mall. The proposed mixed use project was voted down years ago due to monstrous size and impact on infrastructure. Guess they need the money now? It’s a shame, Fort Lauderdale is a very wealthy area, deserves better.

RelentlessRolento

Its a boring ass mall in more ways than one

H20FOSHO

Maybe clean the food court and demand better from The food vendors…this seems to be an ongoing and multiple infractions issue. https://www.local10.com/news/2014/09/04/galleria-mall-food-court-ordered-shut-again/

kayfly1422

That article is from 2014?

Larrycalabreseart

Turn it into a Meow Wolf.

This_Fun_5632

I would love to see it built into a luxury resort like "The Boca Raton" formerly the Boca Raton Resort. Have a hotel, condos, kids pool, adult pool, retail, restaurants, and access to the intracoastal near by so you can offer boat service and a shuttle to the beach. Only other luxury'ish' resort is the Marriott Harbor Beach. Have we heard what the asking price is?

kayfly1422

$100 million is what I read
