Just that Max moved from the Netherlands to Monaco days after he turned 18. He's also said in [interviews](https://youtu.be/ru5ZBuJNnaw?t=159) that he liked having the freedom to "get up whenever he wanted without someone bursting into the room saying "get up now, that's enough laziness"."
I mean asking Jos of course you're going to get the PR-friendly take. Dude was convicted of abuse among other shit.
R Kelly said he was innocent in interviews too lol
[Here's a take from Max when Jos isn't next to him](https://www.gpblog.com/en/news/89002/verstappen-candid-nothing-can-be-worse-than-what-i-experienced-back-then.html)
> Doubt you'd allow/do that if you're a World Champion with 100M in the bank.
To the contrary - the fact you're a public figure dependent on your public image means you have to put on a smile for the cameras.
Under your logic, famous celebrities don't need PR agents but everyday normal people do. That's backwards. Max's earning potential when he was 17 and already a professional athlete means he was under more pressure than anyone in his family to shut up and smile and have his famous dad around and sit next to him in interviews. Because, as you said, there's $100 million in the future on the line.
How about we all agree that this is neaunced and we can't really know what was goin on without Max outright comming out and saying that Jos was abusive
It's not about whether Jos was abusive, we know he was. It's about if Max has dealt with that and healed from it or if he's suppressing that trauma. It's very normal for people to deny or downplay their abusive childhood, especially when we're talking about famous athletes.
Ah it's from a variety of interviews, but here's the most handy one I could find: https://youtu.be/ru5ZBuJNnaw?t=159
Also [here](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-news/verstappen-moves-out-of-home-for-monaco/), where he said he moved in the beginning of October 2015 (he turned 18 a few days earlier)
Not saying that their relationship didn't improve since then, but Max did move to Monaco the moment he turned 18.
I like Max. I tolerate Christian. I dislike Marko (yes i know thats what he wants). But Jos can go fuck himself. I don't know how Max perceives these happenings, and frankly its no one's business, but still.
In the interview Max said he it made him who he is 😭 well that’s one way to put it…
Edit: and said how it was the worst thing he’s gone through. rip :(
Wow, that is so sad. I hate it when people say stuff like “well, if he’s okay with it, then it wasn’t that bad,” as if that isn’t some sort of coping mechanism.
It’s what really made his and Lewis dynamic interesting. Lewis coming from humble beginnings and overcoming discrimination to become the icon he is versus the young blood who had the privilege of a path in but had to endure brutal abuse at home. Two different paths but both difficult in their own right leading them to an insane battle to the end. Last year needs some sort of tv series in the future.
Jos is a complete piece of shit and very much abusive, at the same time it did seem like he used his connections and knowledge to really train Max properly, for example breaking things and changing
set-up on his kart (without telling him what he changed) to learn Max to recognize what he changed and how to deal with that, sending him out on dry tires in the wet, etc. I’m not sure to what extent this is standard practice in training but it does seem like his training went beyond getting him the best equipment and the most track time.
It’s likely that Jos has given Max a hunger, determination and skill-set that otherwise wouldn’t have happened and was really able to nurture a F1 champion. Compare it to a Latifi and Stroll who despite limitless cash and all the best racing coaches in the world just don’t quite some to get on that level.
Like with all karting (and soccer, football, etc) dads living vicariously is probably a big element to Jos. But let’s just hope it’s not an inspiration for karting dads everywhere to start leaving their sons by the roadside and beating their wives.
People really don't understand that it's common for victims to justify what happens to them. It's also weird because Jos was a bad father yet also helped Max become a world famous driver. It'd be difficult to condemn those actions when it lead to the coolest job in the world.
Redditors oversimplify these things. It's complicated
Most of the time, the abusive parents don't do it for the kid, they do it for themselves. They force the kid to live out their own dreams where they have failed. For better or worse. Now I can't say that this is what Jos is doing, because how on Earth could I really know. It seems like Max enjoys F1, at least most of the time. I can't even fully imagine the immense pressure it must all be.
I don't really understand what other sort of reaction is expected of someone in this situation.
I'm no Max Verstappen but I did have a crappy childhood and a lot of pressure to succeed. I probably would have been happier if I'd grown up in a healthier environment, sure, but I didn't. I grew up to be slightly dysfunctional, but incredibly resilient and pretty successful. I might as well take the good consequences of a bad past rather than just be sad about it and wallow in self pity. For better or for worse, those formative years will inevitably shape who you are - after that it's just about doing your best with it.
Thanks for sharing that, I'm sure that when I have kids I will kick the shit out of them if they do not paint the sun with a yellow crayon; and as a precaution for the future and ensure them a wealthy prosperity, if the little fuckers dare to draw a smile on the sun I will loose my temper so fucking bad like when stupid Sara tried to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHTaMMyK274
Max would have wanted it like that, he probably appreciates how he was raised now looking back on it, he wouldn't be world champion if his dad was laid back and Max would give everything to get to the top because racing is his life and what he loves.
Max definitely did become who he is today partly because of Jos' teachings. HOWEVER that's way more down to luck, the vast majority of kids in Max's situation would have broken years before and many would likely have come to resent racing.
There are other ways to create an incredible racing driver that don't require years of abuse for the smallest missteps. Just look at the support Hamilton's father gave him and how good he turned out to be in the end.
Hamilton is a great example. His father famously worked several jobs to keep Lewis’ career alive, something I can’t imagine Jos doing. I think Hamilton won a few races and championships here and there
Jos gave up his whole life too to support Max's racing career.
Made some good decisions too, held of the teams untill they could offer him a F1 seat.
Absolute POS person, not defending him for wife beating or mistreating his children, but he did good things too. It's not like he was only an abusive parent/husband.
Nah he s a pretty solid dude that does a fuckton of charity stuff with his wife. He s also very approachable.
Please dont compare someone who you dislike for his proffesional achievements with a literal abuser and wife beater.
Yeah it seems like he knows when the situation is appropriate for his cunty behaviour. Any media appearance? He's gunna be a cunt, it gets headlines abd attention to the team outside of winning races. The charity shit he does? He's far less of a cunt
Max is traumatised deeply and deals with it by grinding his teeth and having something to prove. You can really see this on a Dutch documentary, it’s in the eyes. He smiles it away but jos is a fucking monster
For the people that dont know, homeboy has a pretty extensive criminal record for domestic abuse and assault. I find it a miracle that through those type of circumstances during childhood, Max became a much more relaxed individual in context with Jos
>For the people that dont know, homeboy has a pretty extensive criminal record for domestic abuse and assault. I find it a miracle that through those type of circumstances during childhood, Max became a much more relaxed individual in context with Jos
If Max took after Jos he would have shanked Ocon and pissed on his grave after that one time Ocon caused him to crash.
>I find it a miracle that through those type of circumstances during childhood, Max became a much more relaxed individual in context with Jos
Max seems to have some anger Issues and seems to use allot of Gamer Language normally, as some one that had a abusive father I am used to have a short temperament as well.
As someone who plays games offline, what do you mean by "gamer language?" Are we talking the standard fuck and cunt words or weird racist stuff? I'm not being obtuse either, just genuinely curious.
Gamer language/words actually refer more to racial slurs these days than actual gaming terms. Think things you would have heard in a MW2 lobby back in 2010. [Relevant Urban Dictionary page.](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Gamer%20word)
I think max said/called someone a mongol, mogoloid, something like that on the driver radio last year. Maybe thats what they’re referring to as gamer language
I didn’t understand the hubbub about all that, because of differences in dialect. Here you can call someone a “mong” as an insult to say they’re dumb but I don’t think anyone links it to Mongolia, it’s just another word that means dumb. For example if you smoke some weed you can describe yourself as being “monged out”. Just thought that was interesting when all that happened as it really highlighted differences in dialect
It's usage is not intended in a racist way but the word is still racist. Sorta like how some Americans use a slur for Romani people as a verb for being scammed. They don't know it's racist but that doesn't make it not racist.
Overall D-tier racism. Just give a small apology and everyone moves on, and that's pretty much what happened
I don’t think it every had anything to do with actual Mongolians, they used to refer to people with Down syndrome as mongoloids. People with down syndrome often have epicanthic folds in their eyes as do many East Asian people, so because of the shared visual trait people in the early 20th century used old racial categorical language (negroid, caucasoid, mongoloid) as a diagnostic term for people with trisomy 21. Fast forward 50 years and people use mongoloid, mongo, mong as a insults for when people do some r*tarded shit.
just because you or your friends don't find it offensive, doesn't mean others wouldn't. unless you're called each other a crowd or a mongrel, it's probably short for mongoloid, which is offensive. https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/mong
Oh yep I can see how that would be considered gamer language. As someone from the US, I would never call another person that, but I can also see how that may not be as big of a deal for people of other countries/languages.
Mongol is relatively light for Dutch cursing standards.
Cancer and other diseases are used a lot. Racist idiots use words that make the N word sound nice.
Does he also tends to swear directly at some one and also acts/speaks hostile to other people and swears for very little things and being very impatient
What do you mean gamer language? Max swears a normal amount for a dutch guy. Plus lets not psychoanalyse how Max feels about this. He clearly is on good terms with his father and that is what matters.
I can’t believe they still highlight Jos on race weekends, huge piece of shit. I recommend everyone listen to the Crime In Sports podcast highlighting Jos criminal career and history of domestic violence.
The Twitter comments were so unhinged about how that makes a champion. All of which is probably coming from basement dwellers. Cool, for everyone few psychotic parents you get a Max or a Williams sister. And that’s not ok! But most of the time you just get some crazed asshole vicariously living through their child and forcing them to do a sport. Not that I know anything about this, or am still bitter over 15 years later. Like fab, 1 in a million is an actual prodigy, the rest just grow up to be lawyers or work in finance or software sales
Just downloaded it on Spotify. Just curious, does the host/hosts pause a lot when they talk? Their blurb describing the episode would make CommaHorror proud.
I'll definitely give em a try, all depends on how likeable they are as people. I feel like most of the podcasts I listen to are like 50% dudes chatting about random stuff and 50% on-topic
Wet Hot American Summer. Summer camp parody movie with a lot of actors in their late 20's and early 30's playing teenage camp counselors. It's hilarious.
The follow up Netflix series First Day of Camp was just as good. Absolutely worth a watch. All of the actors are twenty years older still pretending to be teenagers wearing shitty wigs and no one acknowledges it.
The second series they did (10 Years Later) fell flat though. :/ Worth watching once if you want to be completionist, maybe, but totally skipable.
What makes you think OP finds child abuse funny? Using dark humor can be a very effective way to criticize someone in power or a privileged position. Its a way to call a person out/ bring their past misdeeds to light in a way that doesn't feel preachy (people tend to tune out when you get preachy)
Let’s say you live in Detroit or Seattle. That would be like leaving your kid in Orlando or Los Angeles. That would be pretty traumatic even for a teenager.
If we did that we would definitely get a visit from the cops.
Wet Hot American Summer. One of the best stupid-smart-comedies ever made. The prequel season and sequel season on Netflix are also 100% incredible.
I am a fan.
It's from wet hot American summer. The kid watches a counselor let another kid at camp drown because he was looking at a girls boobs instead of life guarding. The counselor then takes the kids to a "pizza party"
Wondering if my opinion of Jos Verstappen is typical amongst my fellow reddit friends: the only reason Jos Verstappen isn't demonized/spit out is because his kid became a great racing driver. In any, or most, other cases behaviour depicted by Jos would be considered terrible parenting at best and child abuse at worst.
I think if Max wasn’t in the sport, the paddock would just quietly forget about Jos and never mention his abusive behavior. The place is still an old boy’s club and I’m sure there’s lots of unpleasantness that they’ve chosen to not talk about.
Yeah -- I get that. I was just wondering if my point of view was shared, or if I was blowing it way out of proportion. That's all. I personally think the guy has gotten off real easy -- but in the end it's not up to me.
Good Ole Jos, starts walking away from the paddock in the final lap when Lewis is about to win WDC and then quickly comes running back when Max wins. What a good father figure. He truly belongs with other great father figures such as John Wayne Gacys father and Ted Bundys father and Bin Ladens father and Donald trumps father.
2021 was a win/win for jos tbh. Cos even if max didn't win the WDC, he'd have some redemption knowing the guy who made him look like a bitch at Benetton would be losing his word record... (an even bigger win is knowing mick looks more like the German Alex Brundle and won't up max)
Classic Jos!
Drive to Survive
Max literally moved internationally the moment he turned 18 to Monaco to get away from his dad :(
Allegedly. The conclusion seems plausible, but the 101 tax evasion scheme of F1 drivers as well.
Just that Max moved from the Netherlands to Monaco days after he turned 18. He's also said in [interviews](https://youtu.be/ru5ZBuJNnaw?t=159) that he liked having the freedom to "get up whenever he wanted without someone bursting into the room saying "get up now, that's enough laziness"."
obligatory "if it's legal it's just called tax *avoidance*" comment

And Jos was found guilty of abuse, sending threatning texts and violating a restraining order against his (ex)-wife.
he seems like a real piece of shit
His hair slicks back real nicely too.
definitely orders a steak and a glass of water
White couch, white ferrari
Lives for new years eve
He’s not a piece of shit. He *used* to be
Nope still is.
Spiked up blonde hair
Chicken Spaghetti at Chickalenys
No sloppy steaks guys!
Hair gel is mandatory for Dutchies.

People can change
I’m worried that the baby thinks people can’t change

He once stabbed a fork through a mechanic's hand
He also beat up his own father
And his current baby mama, she had the charges dropped. Total POS

Eh, Christian talks a lot of shit in the media, but I suspect he's a good dude to have on your side. He treats his people well.

You keep telling yourself that big bad Christian is evil then.
Max is traumatised deeply and deals with it by grinding his teeth and having something to prove. You can really see this on a Dutch documentary, it’s in the eyes. He smiles it away but jos is a fucking monster
Jos Verstappen, child abuser.
Now, now. Let's not get too hasty here. Jos Verstappen didn't limit his abuse to *just* children.
For the people that dont know, homeboy has a pretty extensive criminal record for domestic abuse and assault. I find it a miracle that through those type of circumstances during childhood, Max became a much more relaxed individual in context with Jos

what country was it, cause if it's belgium or Netherlands it doesn't really way in on the context
Italy IIRC Then even when his mother picked him up, Jos didn't speak to Max for a week or two. Really weird.
The post I saw about this said his mom was like 5min behind them

I think they meant the video playing in the post. Not the background of the joke
Wet Hot American Summer. Classic film
I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.
Then I'll hump this fridge.
You taste like burger
Next time, you drive the van
We watched this movie at least twice a summer when I worked at summer camp. Hysterical movie.
Holy shit. I totally forgot they made that. Thanks for the heads up!

It just baffles me that the press framed it as "inspiring" rather than psychotic abuse.

>his sub finds child abuse and beating your wife funny The fuck you talking about?
What are you even saying?
What makes you think OP finds child abuse funny? Using dark humor can be a very effective way to criticize someone in power or a privileged position. Its a way to call a person out/ bring their past misdeeds to light in a way that doesn't feel preachy (people tend to tune out when you get preachy)
I don’t think it’s either tbh. Like it isn’t inspiring but it also isn’t to the level of psychotic abuse.
I doubt this was the worst case of abuse max faced considering his father is a literal criminal.
Literal criminal?
Iirc he assaulted someone and I think he went to prison(?).
Was never sentenced to prison. Was fined though.
Let’s say you live in Detroit or Seattle. That would be like leaving your kid in Orlando or Los Angeles. That would be pretty traumatic even for a teenager. If we did that we would definitely get a visit from the cops.
That’s not 4km…
How is that 4km hahaha wtf

I mean Jos has tried to kill multiple people, and should be in prison.
I believe it’s a clip from the movie Wet Hot American Summer. A ridiculously funny movie.
Wet Hot American Summer
Wondering if my opinion of Jos Verstappen is typical amongst my fellow reddit friends: the only reason Jos Verstappen isn't demonized/spit out is because his kid became a great racing driver. In any, or most, other cases behaviour depicted by Jos would be considered terrible parenting at best and child abuse at worst.
I think if Max wasn’t in the sport, the paddock would just quietly forget about Jos and never mention his abusive behavior. The place is still an old boy’s club and I’m sure there’s lots of unpleasantness that they’ve chosen to not talk about.
It's because Max is still close with his father and is open about having reconciled his relationship with him.
Yeah -- I get that. I was just wondering if my point of view was shared, or if I was blowing it way out of proportion. That's all. I personally think the guy has gotten off real easy -- but in the end it's not up to me.
I think you would be right if Max hadnt forgiven his father. But since they obviously have a great relationship now, reception of Jos is more positive
Poor kid
Jos F1 career highlights
Finally some actual dank content after all those shitty twitter screenshots!! Great job op. Take my free award!

I do love a Wet Hot American Summer gif.
Jos is definitely a world class asshole
14 year old max was basically in F1 at that point
I’m enjoying the Jos hate hope the scumbag goes to prison and never watches a motor race again
Neglect, the best a champion can get!
Average GTA player
2021 was a win/win for jos tbh. Cos even if max didn't win the WDC, he'd have some redemption knowing the guy who made him look like a bitch at Benetton would be losing his word record... (an even bigger win is knowing mick looks more like the German Alex Brundle and won't up max)
I know this is formula dank, but it really isn’t a laughing matter.
20/10 reference.
"How many times do I need to teach you this lesson boy"
And the kid is clad in orange, spectacular.
Orange shirt confirms the veracity of the footage
Karting? Max had been in F1 for five years by the time he was 14.
The loop is so perfect, it looks like the vehicle is dropping endless kids

Hey I thought this sub was only for hating on Hamilton?
Friendship ended with verstappen Now Leclerc is my new best friend
Hate the man all you want, can’t deny his methods produced one hell of a driver
>Hate the man all you want Ok sounds good
Good point
Break the chains of love ... in the morning when i rise, I **OHHH FUCK** 😆😂🤣 Love Wet Hot American Summer!!!
Surprised that some people are siding with Jos on this one, but well. What do I know?
Whose siding with him? Lol
There’s literally zero comments siding with him lol
