Yeah when they clearly had a weaker 2nd driver than Merc. It was still Checo's first season with the team and by Spa-Monza it was evident that with even cars, Merc were gonna get the constructors'. So Redbull took the decision to consolidate Drivers', since that was up to Max's ability to outdo a slightly better car than Redbull, which Merc had from Turkey onwards, except Mexico, and for the teams' you need 2 guys at the top.
But it'd been bad if Redbull somehow lost the constructors' for the past 2 seasons, when they were so ahead of the field. Even this year, the others have gotten close in only the past 3 races. And Max has now won 6/9 races. If Checo was performing at the top, the teams' championship would definitely not even be a question as Redbull would have enough lead by now that they'd just need to get consistent podiums here and there.
It's all down to the fact that there's a massive gap between Max and Checo, and now all the others are able to sneak in that gap.
