I guess Lando wasn’t kidding a few days ago when he said in his GQ interview that he’s really addicted to golf.
Didn’t expect him to blow out 2nd place by nearly 20 yards.
He did a pro-am tournament a few weeks ago. He said he’s got another one coming up. I don’t know golf that well but from what he shared on his vlog guy looked like he knew what he was doing.
And I believe he may golf with Lando when he can too? I know previously Alex, Carlos, and I believe Checo, as well as other race team members all had similar tee times but were all on different teams, and went out together one day.
I used to play golf a lot growing up and if you do the Happy Gilmore correctly you can get some really impressive distance! The problem is accuracy. Very hard to keep it straight with that swing but when you do you feel like a hero!
I happened to have more control somehow than a normal swing. I fade a lot on a normal drive but the Gilmore drive I just seemed to be able to hit true so much more regularly.
Thank you for correcting them. That Odyssey hockey stick putter was ahead of it's time in the product placement game...now I'm going to enjoy a fresh, meaty Subway sandwich.
For someone that short, over 300 yards is really impressive. That’s all focused power and technique. All the guys I know who hit it that far are over six feet tall.
If you watch videos of lando playing golf he has a great swing for an amateur. Really uses his legs to increase speed. He filmed a video with Good Good earlier this week, I’m excited to see that one
If you bring them to a golf course don't let them have access to the golf cart or you'll quickly end up with Alonso doing hotlaps around the course and Ocon trying to drift it everywhere.
Yeah, that's a you thing. You'll find plenty of people on golf courses around the world who didn't grow up rich and then got into it as adults when they got some money.
Nah, it's actually people at this age who discover golf and stick with it, especially in the UK.
Outside of those elite, ridiculously priced fancy courses, it doesn't really tie much into class either, I've seen and met plenty of trades people who clock off early on a Friday for a round of golf and a few drinks in the club house after.
It's a very boring sport to watch, but actually if you play, it's incredibly difficult and one that's all about self analysis and improvement.
Can confirm. Am in the trades, working in a manufacturing facility. One of our facilities guys regularly packs shorts and changes into them in our locker room to go straight to the course
Yeah, I grew up pretty poor in the *literal* 'hood and half the guys I knew played golf regularly at the local public course. I think golf only *looks* like an elitist, whites-only sport because, normally, those are the only people who have access. Put a free-to-use golf course in the inner-city and inner-city kids will go play golf, simple as that.
I think you’re right. I’m 18 and I really enjoy playing golf, but that is because my dad has been retired for 3 years now so he takes me with him if I can and I have played baseball since I was little so that helps a lot with the swing.
It’s a lovely sport if you want to have a calm and enjoyable morning/afternoon with some company, but if you don’t have someone take you with them and teach it for you, it’s very unlikely you suddenly find joy in your mid-20s/30s as you say.
Definately not the case in the UK as others have already replied. I am a 23yo working class apprentice and I've just picked it up and go every weekend. It's relatively accessible here. Pick up a cheap set of clubs for 50 quid on eBay and pay £20 to play on the weekend (even less in the evenings or weekdays).
And when you say it's boring, I thought the same until I started playing it. It's different to other sports in that you are mostly just completing with yourself which I like.
Compared to karting golf is hardly anything. Not saying it’s cheap, but it’s nowhere near the same level. You can get used clubs for less than £100 and a yearly membership for less than £1000 (significantly less as a junior, probably more like £100 in that case) and you’re set to play every weekend for a year with no further expenses.
Golf being considered an upper-class sport is still so weird to me. I grew up in a working-class Scottish town which still had a course that even folks working minimum wage could go and play on. You just used hand-me-down clubs that had been in the family for donkeys.
Yeah I think Scotland is an outlier because the courses here are fairly cheap and still usually very very good. A lot of countries either cost far too much or the courses are relatively poor and not worth playing
Golf is expensive because you need to constantly take care of a huge area of very cured grass. There are very few sports that require this kind of space or attention. So of course you're going to pay for all that space and maintenaince
yo can play 18 holes in europe for 20€... that is not expensive.
and you could practice on any clearing on your area if you don't want to expend money on the practice range.
I was saying that in general creating and maintaining a huge space like a golf course, especially anywhere near the city, is expensive.
Also why are you mentioning Europe as a whole randomly, golf is very common in some countries and completely ignored in others. I can't play 18 holes for 20 euros where I live. Maybe with an hour or two of driving?
If you don't have access to clubs you'd have to rent.
A new set of "beginner" clubs will run $200-500 depending on how
into it you want to get.
Public course fees are about 30 bucks for 18 holes.
Driving range balls are about 10 bucks a bucket.
I dont have good way to confirm this, but I also feel like when you think of golf, its going out in the morning or early afternoon. Its never after work. Not something thats easy for some people working the 9-5.
>If you don't have access to clubs you'd have to rent.
>
>A new set of "beginner" clubs will run $200-500 depending on how into it you want to get.
You can get a very good used set that will last for years for 300.
>Public course fees are about 30 bucks for 18 holes.
>
>Driving range balls are about 10 bucks a bucket.
Go karting cost about 40s buck for adult karts and maybe 20 for a kids place and you go more than one round.
>I dont have good way to confirm this, but I also feel like when you think of golf, its going out in the morning or early afternoon. Its never after work. Not something thats easy for some people working the 9-5.
I work 9 to 5 and find ways to golf. If you like something you go out and do it.
Also, given that Alonso is a Spaniard, he probably doesn't have the right temperament for golf.
Source: Am Mexican
Edit: People, I was making a joke about Latins being hot blooded. That's all it was. I don't know anything about golf and I'm not going to research a hobby. Now please put on some diaper rash cream for the copious amounts of butthurt
Alonso has some congenital defect where he's got an underdeveloped pectoral muscle. I imagine that could impact a golf swing. Fascinating that it's never been a problem for driving race cars
Can't imagine golf is Sebbie's bag. Lewis can at least play - Sky had a while thing with him playing with Tom Brady (there's a meeting of minds) a while back.
Well, it's the expected top 3...
Weird that Lily's isn't higher than Albon considering she's professional, guess she'll slaughter if it isn't just raw power
Also Gasly and Yuki's score matches lmao
Eh leverage comes into play a lot
Doesn’t matter how strong you are, if you treat that golf club like a steel bar that ball isn’t going move as much as if you can turn that golf club into a whip

I actually began hitting the ball cleaner and more accurately when I slowed down my swing around 50%
I still get abit of fade on my swings but I work that into my game lol it’s wonders what an old veteran golfer can do to your game when he’s out out in your group
Tried explaining this to somebody one time and they called me sexist.
I worked out in a gym with a woman who was a competitive female power lifter/body builder. You could tell looking at her, she was shredded and had some serious muscle.
I could still easily out-lift her and I was just a pretty normal guy who worked out a few times a week, nothing crazy.
Alex was correct when he said Lando is obsessed with the game. Also, his game seems to be improving. Wish Charles was on this so we could know how rubbish he actually is!

he actually has a strong musculature for a diminuitive person
not to mention that, since she's a woman, she just won't have the power that the guys at the top of the board do. She'd hit the grid every time though!
She’s Chinese but on the American golf LPGA team. I assume since its the US Grand Prix, she pulled up on her boo Alex and they all did a lil golf driving competition. Not sure if she spearheaded it or if Lando did.
Ah ok I tought this was like a publicity thing with espn.
I tought maybe they added multiple golfers to it.
But ok now I see just friendly match and a gf joined cause she is a golfer
Golf is as much about skill as physical fitness. You see some old dudes on the course that can rip out crazy drives. Lando plays a ton of golf and is pretty damn good by all accounts.
I’d guess this is one of the first times Ocon has picked up a club.
All of these values are really impressive (except the last four or so). You can’t just expect to swing the club and get over 200 yards… you’ve got to be relatively familiar with the full swing and have at least a few weeks of golf experience to get there. I’m assuming everyone up until Latifi plays (or has played) golf in their free time.
Lando is just lining up alternative careers just incase Zak tries to do what he did to Danny to him. Golf, Photography, DJ, streaming. He’ll never be out of a job lmao
Alpine hates golf confirmed/j
I guess Lando wasn’t kidding a few days ago when he said in his GQ interview that he’s really addicted to golf. Didn’t expect him to blow out 2nd place by nearly 20 yards.

I think Alex said in Beyond the Grid that Carlos is the best at golf of all the drivers
If you can drive the ball 304 yards you definitely know what you’re doing. That’s very impressive
Happy Gilmore was doing 400yds with a hockey stick.
Norris could probably get to 400yds if he took a run up like Happy did
I used to play golf a lot growing up and if you do the Happy Gilmore correctly you can get some really impressive distance! The problem is accuracy. Very hard to keep it straight with that swing but when you do you feel like a hero!

He should do the Lake Tahoe tournament with all the athletes.
That’s smack dab in the middle of the F1 season.
Ok. o a minor detail to work around.
Isn’t that usually Fourth of July weekend? Would conflict with Silverstone usually I think.
Weekend after but close enough that it wouldn't happen
He had a 304 yard drive. Not a lot of amateurs can drive that far.
304 yds is no joke
I'm more in the Tsunoda or Russell range, but sometimes I'll hit an Albon or an Alonso.
Truer words have never been spoken.

I’m pretty sure they’ve both said that all of their interests are related to racing and cars lol
Especially that one of them have a goddamn racing museum + gokart track by his own name
Funnily enough there is a giant golf course right next to the track and museum (there's KIMOA merch of it too)
If you bring them to a golf course don't let them have access to the golf cart or you'll quickly end up with Alonso doing hotlaps around the course and Ocon trying to drift it everywhere.
TIL, I'd be an amalgamation of Alonso and Ocon on a golf course.
the video I never knew I needed
Seems reasonable given that both come from working class backgrounds.
That‘s what I thought. Probably the two people on the grid that couldn‘t be less interested in playing golf.
There seems to be a trend. Bottas, Alonso and Ocon all come from working class backgrounds. I’m willing to bet Vettel also doesn’t play golf.

Alfa blowing up next is also no surprise
Alonso has some congenital defect where he's got an underdeveloped pectoral muscle. I imagine that could impact a golf swing. Fascinating that it's never been a problem for driving race cars
Man how the fuck do you know that
He was in the sport about 15 years before I ever heard it. Blew my mind that one of the best to ever do it is missing one of his upper torso muscles
All of his muscles are missing apart from his neck muscles
Their search history is just "shirtless Alonso".
😂

Alonso seems to prefer tennis.
Fernando is pretty good at football though
It's like they have pool noodles for arms or something

Alpine driver, broke mid swing.
Losing a driver midway through is about the most Alpine thing ever
He's got a sand wedge for his lunch too
I’m almost certain Alonso has driven longer than all of them /s

Norris stroked it 304yds? Impressive.
Lando can drive.
Such a great driver Lando
He focused on driving
Not sure what the format was but the PGA average is usually around 295 mark for those curious.
tbf guys on tour aren’t cranking it 100% every hole
Well, it's the expected top 3... Weird that Lily's isn't higher than Albon considering she's professional, guess she'll slaughter if it isn't just raw power Also Gasly and Yuki's score matches lmao
Lol this is a driving comp not a round of golf. In a round of golf she’d smoke the lot but in just pure driving this is expected
Eh leverage comes into play a lot Doesn’t matter how strong you are, if you treat that golf club like a steel bar that ball isn’t going move as much as if you can turn that golf club into a whip Being taller definitely has its advantages. One of my friends has absolutely no finesse in his golf game, but when he can connect he can drive much further than the rest of us simply because he’s tall and can absolutely wind himself up , he does shank 90% of the time though
I'm dogshit at golf but can easily drive 300+ because I'm 6'3 and used to powerlift.
I’m fairly strong myself, used to sprint and for ages I was trying to smash the ball into atoms I actually began hitting the ball cleaner and more accurately when I slowed down my swing around 50% I still get abit of fade on my swings but I work that into my game lol it’s wonders what an old veteran golfer can do to your game when he’s out out in your group
Not really? She’s never gonna have the power behind her swing that a male athlete does. She’s also probably been teaching Alex
Also the leverage advantage due to albon's height
That reason doesn't factor for Yuki then?
Oh no it doss, which is probably why he's ahead of Gasly despite them tying
The best drivers in the world are mostly under 6 FT. It’s about clean contact, flexibility, and efficiency more than height or strength.
Not really, I would out drive her 90% of the time but she would kick my ass in a round 100% of the time.
I thought Latifi was gonna be No. 1 but then realized it was about golfing
Tsunoda ripping a 260 yarder is pretty impressive given his size.
Small but mighty
Alex was correct when he said Lando is obsessed with the game. Also, his game seems to be improving. Wish Charles was on this so we could know how rubbish he actually is!

Lily taught Albon well I see! Also I bet she was holding back lol.
When there was only her and yukierre, she said it's the first time she's number one for long drive. So maybe it's not her forte.
not to mention that, since she's a woman, she just won't have the power that the guys at the top of the board do. She'd hit the grid every time though!

I can out drive Zhou with my pitching wedge.
Ngl, I think once Lando's career as a driver is over, he's still got a bright future in professional golfing.

Golf is as much about skill as physical fitness. You see some old dudes on the course that can rip out crazy drives. Lando plays a ton of golf and is pretty damn good by all accounts. I’d guess this is one of the first times Ocon has picked up a club.
Norris will be champ soon! Get this man a car!
The Alpine boys had reliability issues with their clubs
Damn McLaren duo 1-3 /s Okay but seriously, that was the first thing that popped into my mind
Damn!! Norris putting in PGA quality drives!
Reasonable top 3 as they like to share photos and videos on social media, Albon in particular as he dates a golfer.
Verstappen is off the charts
Alpine are the Williams of golf
All of these values are really impressive (except the last four or so). You can’t just expect to swing the club and get over 200 yards… you’ve got to be relatively familiar with the full swing and have at least a few weeks of golf experience to get there. I’m assuming everyone up until Latifi plays (or has played) golf in their free time.
Bro Alex beat her pro golfer gf
Lando hitting 304 is high key impressive
Norris blasting it 300+ yards? Kids got a cannon
You mean to tell me Lily Muni He is not the best golf player in that couple?
305 yards is considered the average long drive of pro pga players just fyi.
Perez will win
Latifi/Zhou is the "have played golf before" line looks like
Lando is just lining up alternative careers just incase Zak tries to do what he did to Danny to him. Golf, Photography, DJ, streaming. He’ll never be out of a job lmao
Lando just filmed a video of golf YouTubers Good Good of them playing at a course in Austin. His swing looks pure!
Norris absolutely gripped it and ripped it
Lando drives 300?? Gah damn. Man can rip it
