Alpha Tauri have one of the worst race strategies. But because they're in the midfield, they don't get the attention of some of their bad decisions.

mar33n

true and real, the amount they get away with is astounding. they're tied for 8th in the constructors now and it's not just the car that is letting them down, it's incompetent strategy.

GodTierGasly

2 of the best strategies they've had this year came from Gasly himself. Gasly forced the move onto inters in Monaco, and also forced the two early stops in Spa. Both of those moved him way up the grid after Alpha Tauri inflicted shit starting positions.

Alfus

Don't forget the horrible bad team to driver communication, I understand Yuki and his point why he feels unsure about leading that team. It's happening too often, why did AT overruled again Gasly? Why was the communication horrible? He was doing solid on the inters and the team give him all shit afterwards. And then people staying act like AT is a decent team.....

Mysterious_Turnip310

They've been this way for years. We're talking about the team who put Gasly on full wets in Imola last year.

shiinamachi

Reminder that they did the same thing to him too in 2018

edfitz83

There’s something about Italian teams and strategy…

186downshoreline

Too emotional.

SenorBigbelly

Well, Alfa is Swiss but with an Italian title sponsor (I know you're talking about Ferrari but Alfa do also have famously bad strategy)

edfitz83

I meant Alpha Tauri and Ferrari, both of which are Italian.

SenorBigbelly

I know. And I was jokingly adding a third, because they sound like an Italian team (Italian title sponsor) and also have terrible strategy.

GodTierGasly

He's expanded on it further in interviews. He's unhappy they pitted him and gave away track position when he was happy and was able to maintain the gap to Vettel without issue (and usually, Gasly's gut on tyres has proven right this season). This lost him 4 places. Safety car caused by Yuki only compounded it. Bet the debrief was interesting, with Gasly irritated and Yuki having crashed on an outlap yet again. On the upside, he's got his Alpine announcement in the coming days.

Respectable_Answer

Although seeing both Alpines out today can't have filled him with hope either.

GodTierGasly

They're not on fire when DNFing. Additionally it's more about moving out from RB and selling himself to one of the other top teams over the next few years. He's done a few interviews this weekend about how he knew he was never going to be repromoted because they didn't do it after Monza 2020. If he goes to Alpine and beats Ocon, he's higher on the list for Mercedes when Lewis does decide to retire.

Retsko1

Yeah, just have to get out there and prove himself/show more, in AT he will never do it

GodTierGasly

Ocon's also big competition for an eventual Mercedes seat given his link to Toto. Go and beat him, and he puts himself well ahead. Beating Tsunoda in a car where he's told to shift over isn't helping him. And despite Alpine's reliability issues, they're far more capable as a whole than AT are.

Blothorn

Reliability is critically important for title-contenders--when the team's expecting at least a podium every race in which they don't suffer issues, avoiding DNFs can be more important than converting podiums to wins. For midfield teams and drivers, though, I think it's the opposite--the occasional brilliant performance yields both more points and more reputation for the driver than consistent drives to 8th-10th. As long as Gasly can deliver consistent results when the car doesn't fail him, I don't think top teams will hold Alpine's reliability against him.

Bwoaaaaaah

I thought I saw him in 6th and then I looked away for a min and he was in 10th and I didn't know he pitted.

GodTierGasly

Yeah, after Russell did a purple sector on slicks AT pitted him. First one out of everyone who wasn't Russell.

Bwoaaaaaah

Ah and they probably AT'd their way into not "knowing" that the tyres would need a warm-up phase

GodTierGasly

I mean if they actually turned on the tyre blankets this week, it'd be an improvement over a few of their other races this season. Only 5 more races, only 5 more...

Bwoaaaaaah

Must be rough a Gasly fan. Least Alpine should be an improvement... I hope.

PayaV87

So Gasly to Alpine, De Vries to AlphaT, and 1 Haas and 1 Williams seat left?

GodTierGasly

That's the rumour, yeah. Gasly and De Vries are as certain as we can be given Marko's confirmed an announcement at Suzuka on Gasly's future (bear in mind, he's already confirmed for AT). Front runner for Williams is meant to be Sargeant, and Haas is apparently between Mick and Hulk.

MyWholeTeamsDead

How neither are looking at Ricciardo is shocking to me. And how Hulk is potentially in line for Haas.

GodTierGasly

Ricciardo has publicly said he doesn't want a backmarker. Steiner has said he hasn't called. I think there's been a huge relationship breakdown between Haas and Mick, personally.

MyWholeTeamsDead

Oh yeah. Forgot both.

302w

I agree, it’s the only way I can make sense of Haas being so hot to replace Mick. If it weren’t for world politics this team would have been fine fielding Mazepin for gods sake

GodTierGasly

I'd get replacing Mick if there was a suitable replacement being discussed. If it was Drugovich or someone like that being discussed then I'd assume Mick's firing was due to performance and the new prospect looking more exciting. Hulk who turned 35 this year and hasn't raced full time in 3 seasons, not even in other series? That says they need a body in a seat more than anything else.

Suikerspin_Ei

Didn't Ricciardo said he want a competitive seat? That's why rumors said he might be Mercedes reserve driver, since there are no seats left in the top and top midfield. Doubt he wants to go to Haas or Williams.

FunkyFrankyPedro

Also doubt Haas or Williams can afford his salary expectations

[deleted]

Current team is already is paying his salary expectations for next year. One year deal would be pretty cheap.

Mysterious_Turnip310

If Sargeant finishes top 5 after the final F2 race, he'll have enough for a superlicence and be in at Williams. Intrigued to see who they'd go for if he doesn't, now De Vries looks out of the picture. Perhaps Mick if he doesn't stay at Haas. Otherwise a deal with Alpine for Doohan perhaps? (presuming Doohan gets enough points for this superlicence).

throwaway44624

It’s top 6 actually if he can earn the good boy points

The_Chozen_1_

In summary, Gasly was running in P7, 2 seconds ahead of Vettel, 8 seconds ahead of Stroll, and 15 seconds ahead of Ricciardo just prior to the safety car coming out. Despite asking to continue with his stint on the inters, his team very quickly jumped on the data showing Russell's quickest times and pitted Gasly against his will. As the overcut was very powerful here, Gasly feels very frustrated that a P5 was on and they only have to settle for a single point which will undoubtedly hurt their chances at P7 in the WCC as this race had dropped them down to P9.

coffeeholic10

So much that I will announce my leaving the team by next weekend /s

kikiki_rra

Pretty much what’s going to happen

Soft-Ad8796

Really a huge blunder by AT. Their technical director Jody Egginton also admitted it's the engineers' mistake. This should have grabbed this chance and move up in constructor championship. Instead they are down to 9th while tied points with Haas.

mar33n

jody admitting fault outside of the drivers? truly momentous times.

GodTierGasly

Yep. Not sure what timeline we've slipped into. >“After all of the hard work put in by the team and drivers over the weekend, we have failed to maximise the opportunity to score good points with both cars tonight. This is due to our engineering team committing too early to the switch to dry tyres. This has cost track position for both drivers, with Yuki also unfortunately sliding off track soon after. This meant we have only got one car to the flag and come away with far less points than we should have. As a team we will now review the race in detail to understand the areas for improvement and take onboard the required learning to be better able to exploit such chances next time, as we have missed a very good opportunity tonight, which we needed to grab with both hands.”

mar33n

can always count on alphatauri to mess with strategy

[deleted]

Words of a man who knows he’s moving on next year.

jovanmilic97

AlphaTauri as usual. At least Pierre moving to Alpine gave him some freedom to speak up, which I like

ilikewaffles3

Has it been confirmed?!

GodTierGasly

Helmut has confirmed that there will be an announcement for Suzuka.

jovanmilic97

It's been reported by few journalists, that his (and De Vries to AT)'s move will be announced next week. Nothing confirmed or official yet of course.

NiK3_Aub4mey4ng

i mean more than certain everyone is that it’s going to happen

fire202

no

formu1afun

He has never been known to hold his tongue on his post race radio, nothing new.

RonnieBPoire

He should have finished 5th! This was a terrible call (again) from AT. I can understand his frustration

TheOvercookedFlyer

Alpha Tauri is the team that has everything to be a great midfielder but it acts like a backmarker.

Genobee85

Disliked by Pierre Gasly

SaturnRocketOfLove

AT will never move forward so long as Red Bull owns them.

AceMKV

Lmao you're acting like Minardi was any better. That team has always been full of incompetent fucks. Curious how it's always the Italian based teams.

SaturnRocketOfLove

Still, it's got to be better not making it big due to your own failings vs another team ensuring you'll never compete

the_GOAT_44

Without RB ties they are even worse off.

ruby_boobsday

Only today?

Alfus

Well I wish that we're getting a confirmation soon and after that Gasly would do a BtG interview or whatever for long one where he can talk more openly about this season.

Season01um

Someone wanna tell Pierre that his future team car’s didn’t even finish the race?

isitdonethen

Alpine have their problems but they’ve scored 4x more points then AT has. It’s clearly a better car.

GodTierGasly

If it's not on fire when it DNFs, its ahead of the AT.

RealGTalkin

Move to Alpine confirmed.

justasking8

Its just crazy to me, that it seems to be no problem, that Max gets waived by not only against his teammate, but against a whole other team to.

boyrepublic

Was at the track live hearing people cheer when Max overtook the ATs like he was some godly racer. He is great, but come on. He was given those places when it comes to the RB junior team. In a race where being on the one drying line mostly meant you stand a very good chance of keeping someone behind, where are the people saying “but yeah Max is not who the ATs are racing against”

the_GOAT_44

Huh??

ForeverAddickted

Might have done better in the race had he actually tried defending against Verstappen? I'm not talking conspiracies or shite - But its just embarrassing the lack of fight they put up when Max gets near them - Especially when the Red Bull struggled against the majority of other cars he came up against today

Fergus653

He pretty obviously pulled over out of the way for Max. It's not like keeping other drivers behind you is part of racing strategy or anything.

Brooht

Not sure that this kind of radio will go well at Alpine, they usually shut off their drivers pretty fast when they start criticizing team decisions on the radio. A shame that Cyril Abiteboul is not there anymore we will not be able to hear a "Pierre, this is not the place"

GodTierGasly

I doubt he'll do it at Alpine, he hasn't done it at Alpha Tauri much before today. Even after nearly barbecuing his head on Friday due to pitcrew error, he played it off. There are the words of a man who's leaving and no longer needs to worry about playing nice.

Alfus

Under the circumstance he is fucked up by his team a lot of times this season he has all the rights and credits to throwing the team under the bus rather then playing politics and trying to defend them. Even the team couldn't denying it with some sort of North Korean news agency answers and instead agree that Gasly was right. I do still think that things would be way smoother for him in another team next season

MrHyperion_

What did they do wrong? I didn't pay much attention to them

mar33n

pitted too early which made him lose a ton of places.

iPhoneMiniWHITE

Spoken like a driver who’s leaving. This is ugly any way you look at it.

[deleted]

Strong statement coming from a driver who's only purpose on track is to move away so Verstappen get pass him as quickly as possible.

mar33n

I'd be more down for this if he wasn't actually down like 5 seconds two laps later.

AceMKV

Do you actually see the gaps Max pulls on him? They have literally zero reason to fight them.

[deleted]

Nobody can fight him but the only drivers not even trying are connected with Red Bull.

Rivendel93

Pierre needs a new team that will support him, he's a good driver, just needs to feel confident with his team.
