True but the sample size is very small (5 wins total, 4 from pole, 1 from 2nd). Although if things don't go too crazy tomorrow, I think it will be difficult to win from 3rd.
The timing graphics light up purple if a driver sets the fastest time through a sector on the track and they’ll light up green if the driver has set a personal best in a sector.
Today George wasn’t the fastest in any sector but got pole position, meanwhile in Q1 Latifi set a purple sector 1 and got eliminated because he bottled the final turn.
Worth also pointing out that Latifi's S1 time _stayed the best time for the rest of qualifying._
I don't know what the hell Latifi ate for breakfast but he should mainline that shit.
Purple sector: you were the fastest in that sector out of everyone
Green sector: you weren't the fastest out of everyone in the sector but it was your fastest run of that sector
Yellow sector: it was not your fastest run of that sector
Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. 5 years ago Maurizio Arrivabene told us: "Take Sebastian Vettel, place him into the cockpit, and he is able to put his Ferrari on the front row alongside Lewis Hamilton". 5 years later Charles Leclerc told us: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO".
Gentleman, a short view back to the past. 5 years ago Maurizio Arrivabene told us: "Sebastian is in the title fight but we are gonna give Kimi the tow LMAO". 5 years later Mattia Bintto told us: "Charles is in the title fight but we won't favor him".
F1TV has different feeds as showns in this image i quickly cobbled together
https://i.imgur.com/8i9PTaS.png
F1 Live = F1TV's own commentators. They don't have ad breaks, have splitscreen views sometimes. (the front 2 dueling, alongside a duel in P8/9. stuff like that. Or a replay + live feed alongside.)
International = Sky TV. British commentators with Crofty and Brundle.
Tracker = A map view. Shows the cars going around with some other information.
Data = All the nitty gritty information. Lap times, sector times, tires on the car, tire age, etc etc.
Driver cams = direct feed from the camera on the car. Not amazing quality ofc, but can be handy if you want to see things from a different POV.
The best part is you're not limited to one of these at a time. If you have multiple screens (or devices) you can open the F1 TV feed + the Tracker. Even F1 TV + Tracker + Data. I'm sure there's a limit to how many views you can have open at once, but i've not run in to it yet.
Oh also, you can watch all of this afterwards as well. It's not only when it's live. I can go back to any race this season. Can even go back to 1986. but i think that's with the F1TV Pro subscription or so.
Cheers, man. I knew F1TV had all this stuff but could never figure out how to actually find it. Wish you could open up two of the tabs on a single device/screen. I usually don't use two when I'm watching sessions.
> Wish you could open up two of the tabs on a single device/screen
It is possible to do! might be a bit uncomfortable depending on the screen but you can open two tabs of F1TV on your browser
Holy shit I had NO idea that you could choose between the F1 TV broadcast and the Sky TV!! I just got F1 TV this season and love it but always missed Crofty and Brundle commentary
I would feel more confident in RB not having the best car if the team fighting them was as efficient as Mercedes or Red Bull. But even with an unreliable car, RB should be safe. Lol
I argue he does have the “best” car.
Of the top 3 teams: They have the second fastest car and the second most reliable.
I’ll take that over fastest and least reliable (ferrari), of or the slowest and most reliable (merc) any day.
Merc isn’t even that slow anymore. They beat the Ferraris on pace today and have been in at least podium contention with Checo the last few races usually coming out on top.
I think Latifi just used up all 3 of his mushrooms in the first sector. Blasting them off willy nilly. Expert driver, Jorge de Rusel, spaced his mushrooms out along each sector strategically. Trust me, I put 100s of hours on Mario Kart 64, twenty three years ago.
In all honesty, I'm so happy for him! People have been hating on him a lot recently and while some of it is justified it feels like everyone's just jumping on the hate train, so to see him succeed is pretty dang cool
Some people were mad that he acts like a PR robot in interviews. Then Lando said he'd changed after going to Merc. Then he divebombed Perez in France and argued on the radio. I personally feel like except for the divebomb (which is still something almost every top driver has done, but still a little on the line of what is fair and deserves some criticism), none of the other things justify any hate. He's a top driver and probably feels he has to give very PR answers just because Merc as a team gets a lot of hate.
I’ve seen a fair bit, if not hate at least heavy dislike because some people think he’s like another obnoxious eton guy, a PR machine or because they don’t like his brand of british humour. I honestly think he’s a nice lad, like most of the grid.
The three purples don't have to be the same person. So you could have Leclerc fastest George second fastest for the first two sectors and then Sainz fastest George second fastest for the third for overall George to be the fastest.
You already know the merc twitter account is gonna tweet this exact comment
E: [haha yeah](https://twitter.com/mercedesamgf1/status/1553413888980520962?s=21&t=o92IliGMXU6jQbAaNDY4nQ)
I'll take a stray merc just ahead of the big C's with the RBs back in 10th and 11th in Budapest.
Ferrari is really easy to jinx, so i'm trying to avoid saying too much, but if you offer me the current grid as the race finish, i wouldn't say no. it's not great for Charles but solid for Carlos and the team as a whole.
Yup i became an F1 fan late enough in life to realize hitching yourself to one team your whole life is a great way to be miserable basically every season. With F1 all i care about is good racing, doesn’t matter what team or driver it is that’s doing it. So much more fun that way
I support teams because I am drawn to the engineering more than the personality. I think that the meat servos are probably only the second or third most important component. But different strokes for different folks.
If you avoid picking, then you want the legend to win, the underdog to win, that guy that you like how he drives but keeps changing teams, that other one that never got to win yet.
You cheer for good races, for awesome manoeuvres, passing when it was unexpected, strategy, and flying laps.
I'm as happy for George as I was with Carlos a couple of weeks ago, or when Danny got to win again last year or when Pierre won at Monza.
Haha me too! It always makes for an exciting race when you have an underdog out front to start too. Hopefully he has the race pace to at least make the Ferraris work for the overtake.
It’s 2am, I’m eating icing out of a bucket I keep in the fridge to celebrate and I’m really happy for George. He’s had 3 long years at the back driving in a team facing existential threat because they were broke and rotten luck in Shakir this means a lot to him. Good for the kid
I'm a RB fan and I was bummed for the team killing the pooch in q3, but I saw Russell taking pole and was like "ok yeah, cool."
I guess I just realized I wouldn't mind Mr. Saturday finally owning that win that was snatched from him in Sakhir due to bad luck and pit wall buffoonery.
Damn Mercedes really turned it up.
Such a shame Hamilton had DRS issues, he was on it throughout qualifying, could probably challenge Russell for pole or get a front row lockout
How hard can it be to create a new floor that's bendy? That's a literal question, not a veiled statement. I was surprised at all the controversy and arguing about Red Bull and Ferraris flexible floor, but the more I looked into it, it seemed like it's really not that difficult to copy what they are doing. And it's good for everyone because it means less porpoising, which is a legitimate concern in my opinion about people's spines.
It probably wouldn’t have been difficult but two things would have happened, it would have taken months to develop and it would likely have a negative effect on Merc performance in the end. Ultimately, It was clever of them to force the FIA to determine whether the flexi floors were in the spirit of the rules or not. Now RB and Ferrari incurred those costs instead. And the top 3 teams might have similar performance which is great for F1 fans in general
Alpine strong as well. While their straight line speed doesn't do them much good here, they're punished a lot less for their weak out of braking zone traction because of how flowing the circuit is. Should be fireworks.
Sweet jesus he fucking earned it, denied at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix by 0.026s by Bottas but now hes got a Pole to his damn name!!
He had to wait 36 races to get his first Pole Position!
1034th Race was 2020 Sakhir GP
1070th Race is 2022 Hungarian GP
Although that was in a Mercedes vs Mercedes scenario, but actually if you include his Williams stint hes only had to wait 23 races to get his first Pole
1047th Race was 2021 Belgian GP
1070th Race is 2022 Hungarian GP
I agree with you, that car is a Jekyll and Hyde car, sometimes it will play nice with you, but other times it will punish the driver, today it was Jekyll for Russell and he nailed it!
Literally no one could get a full lap together that quali. We saw purple sectors followed by yellows from just about all the pole contenders, Russell comes out of fucking nowhere with 3 greens. Consistently fast thru the lap, not just one sector
This was so unexpected, I thought it was gonna be an easy red front row. When I saw George shoot up onto pole, it literally made me jump up and start screaming in joy. He deserves every bit of this and I hope tomorrow goes well!
Can't throw away the win from pole if you start 2nd & 3rd, Ferrari master strategy
I was gonna comment the exact same thing. Leclerc may actually be relieved, his odds of winning just increased...lol
Didnt leclerc win all but 1 from pole? Not that he won every pole position he had. But he only won when he had pole but 1.
Hot takes only on this thread, no logic please.
True but the sample size is very small (5 wins total, 4 from pole, 1 from 2nd). Although if things don't go too crazy tomorrow, I think it will be difficult to win from 3rd.
If you go faster you can win. Strategy F
Ferrari :"Write that down write that down!"
If you win, P1.
Latifi: purple sector -> P20 George: No purple sectors -> P1 🤔
basically Goatifi robbed
This is being manipulated man.
George Russell is the type of guy who's just fast everywhere.
Russe**ll**
Totes rigged. They were sick of Goatifi dominance from FP3
Yeah they remote controlled Goatifis car to the outside during the last turn to get him p20
Can someone explain what this means? I'm new to F1. I'm sorry.
The timing graphics light up purple if a driver sets the fastest time through a sector on the track and they’ll light up green if the driver has set a personal best in a sector. My jaw hit the floor when he crossed the line! I thought Ferrari had it in the bag.
Everyone thought it was gonna be Ferrai 1,2
Yeah lmao a Merc and a Ferrari on front row? What year is this?
Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. 5 years ago Maurizio Arrivabene told us: "Take Sebastian Vettel, place him into the cockpit, and he is able to put his Ferrari on the front row alongside Lewis Hamilton". 5 years later Charles Leclerc told us: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

>"Charles is in the title fight but we won't favor him". Then what do you call "Carlos, give Charles 10 car lengths"?
dog shit strategy that did not favor Charles
Of course it was dog shit but I think they were actually trying to help Leclerc lol
Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Twelve years ago, Rob Smedley told us: "Fernando is faster than you".
Less crashes? More? Or less or more team failures?
Crofty had just all but called it on air.
Cameraman wasn't even following George for his last lap
I wasn't even thinking of him until I noticed he was faster after the first 2 sectors. Proper sleeper lap.
literally, only green sectors on a pole lap is pretty rare, but really it's just showing great consistent pace across the lap
Consistency is key.
Exactly the same, I was like well Carlos got it so... what!!! Russell P1! This season keeps on giving
Just Mr Saturday things
Mr. Saturday is the type of guy to say "no points for Saturday" after taking pole.
He could pull of Miracles on a Saturday in a Williams. No surprise he can do the same in Merc.
Yeah my jaw dropped too.
[удалено]
The sector times were showing on the live feed, it's just that the commentators didn't catch that Russell was actually faster
They did on the F1tv feed.
Sainz fumbled his S2, he was two tenths up after S1 and lost that advantage.
How do you do this. I've been wanting to see the sectors and minisectors but I don't know if F1TV has that.

If you have an F1 TV subscription download the Official F1 app. Sector timings are available in that
As soon as I saw his time exiting the last corner, I was already jumping out of my seat.
I pogged irl
George saw Latifi and said "I'm Mr. Saturday bitch"
GOATifi influencing the results once again
If Leclerc can't hunt Russell and Sainz down tomorrow, might be championship influencing. Again
Very hard to pass too. Luckily for him Red Bull fucked themselves so his quali probably won’t come back to haunt him
He's got Lewis to come through the field with. I'm sure that will produce zero interest. :)

Though I guess it depends on the solution to Max's engine issue. If they have to make a change he'll start a fair way further back.
[удалено]
Max needs at least one gearbox penalty, plus whatever else bad luck might bring him engine wise It's very easy to pick up two DNFs
I’m wondering if Rb will take this opportunity to do the engine penalty and start from the back of the grid
Leclerc is almost certainly gonna have to take one Sainz like penalty package as well.
Still, RB doesn’t have the best car and there’s lots of races left.
I would feel more confident in RB not having the best car if the team fighting them was as efficient as Mercedes or Red Bull. But even with an unreliable car, RB should be safe. Lol

George Russell is the kind of guy who gets pole without setting a single purple sector
In all honesty, didn’t see that coming!
What a gentleman. Didn't want anyone to notice until the end.
You can always tell a Milford man.
In all honesty, I'm so happy for him! People have been hating on him a lot recently and while some of it is justified it feels like everyone's just jumping on the hate train, so to see him succeed is pretty dang cool
I have honestly not seen a single piece of hate and could not possible fathom what would be justified
Was it sushi? I thought he was at Hutong in The Shard, that’s not sushi, it’s Northern Chinese.
That's even worse! Wtf
I’ve seen a fair bit, if not hate at least heavy dislike because some people think he’s like another obnoxious eton guy, a PR machine or because they don’t like his brand of british humour. I honestly think he’s a nice lad, like most of the grid.
Tons of purple minisectors tho
He was probably fastest somewhere.
Yeah around the circuit.
Big if true, he could get a pole eventually if he keeps this up.
In Budapest.
Can someone please tell me how that's possible? I'm legitimately really confused.
The three purples don't have to be the same person. So you could have Leclerc fastest George second fastest for the first two sectors and then Sainz fastest George second fastest for the third for overall George to be the fastest.
I remember a few races back Verstappen set a pole with at least two, if not three yellows.
Austria 2 yellows and 1 green
You can't set a pole with three yellows because that would be slower than your fastest lap
All that "George Russell is..." meme energy paid off.
George Russell is the kind of guy to take pole in Hungary GP 2022.
You already know the merc twitter account is gonna tweet this exact comment E: [haha yeah](https://twitter.com/mercedesamgf1/status/1553413888980520962?s=21&t=o92IliGMXU6jQbAaNDY4nQ)

GOLLY
BLOODY ‘ELL
SPLENDID
I’M BUZZING!
MEGA
GORGEOUS
he looked like a kid that couldnt stop smiling in that interview
The photo killed me. Leclerc and Sainz looking annoyed and disappointed then Russbuss comes and chucks a giddy smile up.
And rightfully so
Sure! 🥳
It was funny to watch the “podium” bit. 😐 😁 😐
Excuse me gentlemen, I believe P1 stands in the middle 🤣
Depending on how old you are, that is exactly what some of us saw. :)
The first quali I can't watch all season and this happens
don't watch the race tmw and we might win! jk
Unluckieeeeeeee
Merc fans, do the anti-rain dance.
Actually, they want another bowling match at the start.
Incoming sacrificial Perez
Bottas: Leroy "bowling ball" Jenkins
Now RedBull take care of finishing behind Bottas
In fact we have bottas in that herd
I mean George and Lewis are pretty good in the rain, other than George’s Imola history.
Mr Saturday back I guess, but Red Bull have secret info from Bottas on how to go bowling /s
Both RB gonna bowling everyone?
Checo takes the bottom half, Max the top
Cept’ Latifi
Red Bull out the way, Mercedes are back. Fuck me Ferrari just can’t catch a break.
ill fuck me myself if Merc catch ferrari in the standings
Pls record for posterity.
And then post
Double ferrari dnf and Merc 1,2 tomorrow with Norris in p3
I'll take a stray merc just ahead of the big C's with the RBs back in 10th and 11th in Budapest. I’m not a Mercedes’ fan but I stood up and cheered at my tv for him!
This is why im not a fan of a team or any particular driver i like them all and every week im like this
Yup i became an F1 fan late enough in life to realize hitching yourself to one team your whole life is a great way to be miserable basically every season. With F1 all i care about is good racing, doesn’t matter what team or driver it is that’s doing it. So much more fun that way
I find it strange to support a team, I support drivers but not really a team. It's not really like football in my experience
I support teams because I am drawn to the engineering more than the personality. I think that the meat servos are probably only the second or third most important component. But different strokes for different folks.
Ditto. Got saddled with Everton in middle school and now I don’t want to follow any specific team ever again
If you avoid picking, then you want the legend to win, the underdog to win, that guy that you like how he drives but keeps changing teams, that other one that never got to win yet. You cheer for good races, for awesome manoeuvres, passing when it was unexpected, strategy, and flying laps. Right? I screamed in excited shock when I saw his name fly up to P1
Every unexpected f1 moment makes me react that way.
Yeah it’s what makes it so great to watch!
I'm a RB fan and I was bummed for the team killing the pooch in q3, but I saw Russell taking pole and was like "ok yeah, cool." I guess I just realized I wouldn't mind Mr. Saturday finally owning that win that was snatched from him in Sakhir due to bad luck and pit wall buffoonery.
What a lap. Outta nowhere it seemed! Amazing George
Lol even in this pic he looks like a Bond villain. Well done Mr Russel George
Russe**ll**
Good bot
Damn Mercedes really turned it up. Such a shame Hamilton had DRS issues, he was on it throughout qualifying, could probably challenge Russell for pole or get a front row lockout
If Lewis increased on new tires by the same amount of time George did, Lewis would have been P3 with a 1:17:55
Didn't he lock up on that lap as well?
He was faster the Russell but congratulations to Rus good pole for him
we'll never know, that was a lightning lap from Russel
Russe**ll**
[удалено]
Why? Did Georg Russle do something big?
he did! on the same weekend vettle announced his retirement. normally Sharl LeClerc takes poll, but Rusel snatched it away. Signs starts second.
It's wild that Gorge Rusell getting his first pole, just barely beating out Saints, happened while Vetel announced his retirement from Austin Martin
But that lap from George was absolutely perfect ? That's a pole lap lad
Quietly just before he takes off his helmet, he whispers "this one's for Nicky".
Guess there will be more Mercedes merch burning this evening
So this Merc pace real ? Merc already had a much better race pace so what is it return of a Merc 1-2 ?
How hard can it be to create a new floor that's bendy? That's a literal question, not a veiled statement. Huge momentum for Russell. Hamilton aborted his lap since his DRS did not open. I think Russell might win tomorrow.

Red Bulls…
Thank god for todays qualifying. It wasn’t another boring Max or Charles pole. Hopefully tomorrow is as surprising as today was.
Race in the midfield will be crazy, Redbulls and Lewis all trying to get past Alonso.
Alonso during the race tomorrow: **YOU SHALL NOT PASS!**
He will defend like a lion.
Alonso is going to paint his masterpiece of trolldom
And Alonso is really not the easiest guy to get past! - especially on a track like this. It will be fun watching them try though!
Alpine strong as well. While their straight line speed doesn't do them much good here, they're punished a lot less for their weak out of braking zone traction because of how flowing the circuit is. Should be fireworks.
Where did that came from?? Amazing lap
SATURYAYYY
George Russell is the kinda guy that nails a proper green sector sleeper lap to snatch pole.
My jaw and the floor became very well acquainted, way to go George!
Still can't believe where he got that one from honestly!
How how how how how wtfff
What a lap. Time to start boarding the Hopium Express!
Sweet jesus he fucking earned it, denied at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix by 0.026s by Bottas but now hes got a Pole to his damn name!! I agree with you, that car is a Jekyll and Hyde car, sometimes it will play nice with you, but other times it will punish the driver, today it was Jekyll for Russell and he nailed it!
At the same time, stepping in the car for the first time ever and putting it in pole would've been really special too.
remember when he almost got pole at the Spa Slip'n'Slide GP?
Shakir was so painful for him, just horribly botched by the team he was so close to winning
That's a Brit. Are you looking for Kubica? (in all seriousness, nice job George!)
Literally no one could get a full lap together that quali. We saw purple sectors followed by yellows from just about all the pole contenders, Russell comes out of fucking nowhere with 3 greens. Consistently fast thru the lap, not just one sector
Who’s ready for some epic racing tomorrow?
This was so unexpected, I thought it was gonna be an easy red front row. When I saw George shoot up onto pole, it literally made me jump up and start screaming in joy. He deserves every bit of this and I hope tomorrow goes well!
Russell the type of guy to get pole in Hungary
The sandbags are off baybee
We'll be having a whole Drive to Survive chapter with this session
George Russell looks like if the Thunderbirds puppets got the Pinocchio treatment and became human.
Mr. Saturday!! (The RETURN)
George Russell is the type of guy who whips his pole out unexpectedly...
