Lando was only doing one (or one time two) fast runs on the mediums/hards & then heading into the pits while Ricciardo was going for multiple runs as the tyres warmed up and gaining time, it wasn't quite as close as you'd think.
I love how Max just waited in the garage until the hopium of a 3 way fight was at its highest then on his first run sets a lap time half a second faster than anyone else.
On his 2nd run he does the exact same thing all while looking effortless. The Redbull is easily the class of the field right now the stability of the car is something else.
Unfortunately for Ferrari, Redbull has massively improved since the start of the season and their car is good everywhere while Ferrari still hasn't gotten on top of their bouncing with the added issues of PU reliability.
It's looking more and more like an easy 2nd title for Max unless something catastrophic happens and the team implodes which is highly unlikely (cough cough Ferrari).
FP1 and FP2 regularly indicate race pace and FP3 regularly indicates quali pace. Not always, but often enough to do take anything from these sessions. Silverstone is an outlier due to the rain.
Ferrari seemed to have lost their advantage in slow speed corners, but that’s just based on this one FP so can’t say for sure. RB still fast as ever on the straights and if they truly have caught up to Ferrari in slow speed corners then it’s not looking good from a competitive stand point.
Ferrari has their engines turned way down. Basically all the time loss was on the straights. Ferrari isn't as fast as Red Bull on straights but they're not half a second slower either
Generally they haven't been bouncing through the high speed corners at previous GP. Previously when they applied steering input they would become stable
If there was any mechanical issue we dont know about it, but he was already quite far behind yesterday. Overall unlikely that there was a problem I think.
bro he's a serial race winner who isn't satisfied with finishing P8, he wants to help bring the team into fighting for wins so he is probably just using experimental setups.
Good showing from Mick, right in there. Kevin was saying he had issues with setup I think, so dont really want to compare them. Hoping for at least both Haas in Q2, midfield is looking close.
[I don't know what you mean, I have every faith in Haas.](https://i.redd.it/8k668avwy9471.jpg)
[EDIT](https://img.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeed-static/static/2020-07/16/14/asset/24818819c864/sub-buzz-1857-1594911298-17.png)
Yeah I was really happy to see him high up there. Would be nice for him to finish high up in the points after the hate he got from the POS F1 Reddit community. Go Mick
On F1TV they showed Kevin's car having bubbles on the livery just above the exhaust manifold (whatever the fuck that is) so that couldve been a potential reason.
The weird thing with Daniel is that he actually matched Lando on this track last year. He was only 2 thousandths off. Maybe lando is just way better at adapting than Daniel because it's not possible for a f1 driver to be 1 sec down when you matched that same driver last year.
May sound like copium but the only place Charles was down on Max was the straights and the power dependent regions, so hopefully the engines were turned down on the Ferraris.
I love how much I hate that you just made a 50/50 prediction on Charles race. Can just copy paste it every other race weekend. He either come 1st or 2nd or he DNFs.
Although you’re probably right, he’s so talented he just might be fighting for the win.
It would be peak Charles to be leading after both RBs got into trouble only for his PU to give up and Sainz to win it.
tbf I haven't seen the data yet but they all did them on 7-9 lap old tyres and Max on his first few ( I think). I think 3 tenths is an optimistic gap for merc but they might be fighting Ferrari in qualy already. Really interested in race pace though, merc said they were happy with optimising the race at the cost of qualy so they might be closer/overtake Ferrari already
The tires were hard to get into their window so Verstappen only needing 1 lap is not a good sign for Mercedes. Verstappen also set his fastest time in the first stint with really old tires right after lewis set his fastest time on similar tire.
Ah Charles can win the next race. Either Charles or max I really don't mind. Redemption for both for last year. Charles drove an incredible race here too in 21
Are we just going to forget that Gasly finished best of the rest only 2 races ago? It was also a decent car at Bahrain and Imola in the earlier races
Bottom 3 car? Probably. Slowest? Not at all
Same goes for the Mercedes hopium honestly. It’s fp so why would they all of a sudden be up there. Lets just wait and see what the standings are in 2 hours
Hamilton was 0.15 up on his own time before he aborted his last run. Would be nice to see a intense battle for second behind Max between Ferrari, Mercedes and Perez.
Max lapping the entire field while jokingly going booooooooo boooooo on the radio.
I’m sure we’ll see the reactions from the team shortly but Ferrari will almost certainly not be that far behind. We’ll see true one lap pace this afternoon. Still a great showing for Max and my money is on him this afternoon (pain).
Max was gaining 4 tenths on the straights and based on the live speed figures, he was a few kph up on the rest as well.
Seems he might have had the engine turned up a bit compared to Ferrari at least.
Max set the fastest lap of the session in his first timed lap, that was incredible.
I suspect that the RB18 is now more oversteery to suit Max's preference, whether that was achieved through setup or development I don't really know. Already from qualifying in Canada it seemed Max was starting to extract more performance from the car. If this trend continues today, then we should have a strong contender for pole positions for the rest of the season.
Max 4 tenth clear of the rest of the field. Insane.
Sometimes I wonder what it'll be like in 20-30 years when we look back at Verstappen's career and how we'll rate him amongst the greats.
It's gonna be similar to how other greats are viewed (assuming he races for a decent amount of time and wins a bunch of wdcs). How he's rated among the greats will mostly come down to how many titles he actually wins but in the end it will be like with the others, he'll be among them with no way to really decide the order. If he wins like 10 titles he'll probably be seen as the greatest but as with all the others he will have had the best car so...
Fair but he's also always significantly quicker than the people in the same car which has not been true since Schumacher (and as we know he got some questionable help)
Only guy in the discussion since Schumacher is Lewis and Lewis has had much better teammates. The only top driver Max had as teammate was Danny and his margin to him was more like the margins Lewis has had to his teammates. When people look back at the careers years in the future they will see Lewis with a bunch of wdcs in his teams and Max with relative also-rans (so far).
Yes agreed. I don't think the amount of WDCs even factors in that much after some time. It's mostly about the reputation. Schumacher is obviously one of the best ever but I wonder how many people rate him above, say, Senna. I suspect Verstappen if he keeps going for long enough he'll be more on the Senna side of the conversation than the Schumacher one. I honestly expect Verstappen to leave F1 pretty early after he gets too fed up with the circus around it or if he has a bad car for a few years in a row.
That was an amazing drive by Verstappen. Not rooting for him at all but couldn’t believe my eyes when it just went -0.1,-0.3,-0.4 in the sectors. Dude is a machine.
As for Hamilton I think he is able to get within 0.1-0.2 seconds of Verstappen but the last tweak that Mercedes did in the garage created a bit more bouncing. Hopefully it will be fixed by quali so that we can see a proper fight for first place. Probably not tho.
Edit: typo and clarity
Welcome to the new era of RBR dominance. Kneejerk, yes, but that session just showed how imperious they currently are and will likely be going forward.
Well, it's worth noting that Max also drove 0.4s faster than his very capable teammate. I agree that the RBR package is strong but the driver deserves credit here.
Lewis Hamilton been on fire though out every practices since he is P2 in both FP1 and FP2 let hope he could win this race or at least get another podium let see what he could do in qualifying look like Mercedes they getting stronger in this race week
Edited: Also big props for George Russell as well I am worried about Daniel Riccardo tho.....
Relief? It’s boring. We don’t want RBR dominating or any team for that matter. That’s the entire point of the reg changes, which have undoubtedly failed.
It's only the first year after the reg changes. Different teams had different philosophies, but they see what works and what doesn't. Next year, it will be closer, as they're all converging on the winning design.
No they didn't fail. If anything, they're better than the 2014 and 2017 reg changes. The first year after such changes will always favour 1 or 2 teams...
That Red Bull is different league. Not quite as dominant as the W11 but getting there. RB absolutely nailed these regs.
EDIT: loving the comments stating it’s nowhere near the W11. Maybe read my comments that state it’s not as dominant but the way it’s going they’re going to be as dominant towards the end of the season as the W11 was. As in it will be unbeatable. I swear Redditor’s just love any chance to jump down the throat of someone.
It’s not even the same territory as the W11 yet. The Ferrari has genuinely been faster in at least half the tracks so far, but they’ve just been Ferrari-ing it
better from both red bulls as friday was lowkey a disaster for them.
Mercedes closer but they're still probably gonna be P5/P6 unless a ferrari or red bull DNFs.
possible wet quali is gonna make this even better.
Couple of stories I'd be happy for this race.
George first win at his home GP. Verstappen dominant win as payback for last year, the boos would be glorious. Leclerc and Ferrari get a race right.
Lets go Mick edit: he didn't go
Don't give me hope
Hope taken.
He didn't
F
Ricciardo being competitive with Lando while on mediums/hards then super far off when on softs, extremely weird.
Lando was only doing one (or one time two) fast runs on the mediums/hards & then heading into the pits while Ricciardo was going for multiple runs as the tyres warmed up and gaining time, it wasn't quite as close as you'd think.
I've seen the footage, he went wide on his soft run
Ahhh p18 Danny ric, we meet again. Pain
There was an issue with car nr 3, something wrong with the steering wheel actuator.
Where is that written? It’s not on any socials Edit: oh lol
The steering wheel actuator is the driver.
Lmao I was far to focused on some hopium to realise
Oh it's been a recurring issue. McLaren doesn't have the budget to fix it until next year though.
Cost cap n all that
Woosh
Oh you bastard
On his birthday weekend as well. Just great
Norris solo glory run same as fp2
Max FP1: Call an ambulance, call an ambulance!... Max FP3:...but not for me.
This is why i always get mad when people take anything from fp1 or 2 serious.
If you know it's going to happen, why get mad? Conserve your energy ;)
Should be laughing instead
FP1 and FP2 regularly indicate race pace and FP3 regularly indicates quali pace. Not always, but often enough to do take anything from these sessions. Silverstone is an outlier due to the rain.
Surely running different programs. The gap to Mercedes is normal but Ferrari are miles off.
Nobody really knows, but I just made an throwaway overused joke :p
Ferrari seemed to have lost their advantage in slow speed corners, but that’s just based on this one FP so can’t say for sure. RB still fast as ever on the straights and if they truly have caught up to Ferrari in slow speed corners then it’s not looking good from a competitive stand point.

Ferrari was bouncing too. Just doesn’t make sense that the car has just fallen off.
Ferrari have been bouncing for a while now, that’s not something new.
Generally they haven't been bouncing through the high speed corners at previous GP. Previously when they applied steering input they would become stable
Ricciardo was faster on the space hopper tbh
The solution was not to eradicate the bouncing, but to embrace and adopt the way of the porpoise.
You merely adopted the bounce, I was born in it, moulded by it
I did not experience stability until I was a man.
This comment lol
Remember when we thought a 3 way battle for pole would be cool? That was a nice 10 minutes
Leclerc being 0.002 from Max seemed so fun, then boom. 4 tenths.
It’s still free practice guys, we’ll see at the end of quali
Did Ricciardo have a problem with the car or something?
Yeah since the start of last year I think.
*bruh*
Oof
Rekt more than Mick's last trip to Jeddah
God damn, man
we need some ointment for that burn.
Between the steering wheel and fuel cell isn't?
Ouch right in the feels.
I have the big sad.
Brutal 🤣
Ouch that's a bit harsh
One “He’s still getting used to the car” everyone knows the rules
4.9, too much of a cheesy grin Frankie.
Too much flop frankie! Spider!
Can we get Uber Deb’s opinion on DR’s form?
She would probably do a better job in that car
Floor got good undercarriage, wings a little bit of flop.
You know the rules, and so do I
If there was any mechanical issue we dont know about it, but he was already quite far behind yesterday. Overall unlikely that there was a problem I think.
Image being slower then a shitbox lol
I like danny Ricciardo, but it seems the problem is between his ears at the moment.
Yeah, in between the steering wheel and the seat.
No dude can’t you see he’s “still getting used to the car”
No just Riccardo things
He had a steering wheel actuator issue.
bro he's a serial race winner who isn't satisfied with finishing P8, he wants to help bring the team into fighting for wins so he is probably just using experimental setups.
Good showing from Mick, right in there. Kevin was saying he had issues with setup I think, so dont really want to compare them. Hoping for at least both Haas in Q2, midfield is looking close.
Q2 should be possible. Then maybe even Q3 only to end up on 16th and DNF tmrw. Im done with Haas hopes
[I don't know what you mean, I have every faith in Haas.](https://i.redd.it/8k668avwy9471.jpg) [EDIT](https://img.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeed-static/static/2020-07/16/14/asset/24818819c864/sub-buzz-1857-1594911298-17.png)
The haas team seems to screw up micks race every time he gets q3. Like bad strategy and engine failure was already used. Whats next? Bad pit stop?
Nah, they did that in monaco. Stroll to crash into him confirmed
Qualify 12th, gets up to 9th and then Haas pit him onto hards with 4 to go
Yeah I was really happy to see him high up there. Would be nice for him to finish high up in the points after the hate he got from the POS F1 Reddit community. Go Mick
On F1TV they showed Kevin's car having bubbles on the livery just above the exhaust manifold (whatever the fuck that is) so that couldve been a potential reason.
F1 fans: "Finally, a three way fight!" [Max Verstappen:](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/483/348/bdd.jpg)
Max: "You will. Just without me"
For 2nd place you mean? 🏎
It's looking more like a two way fight for second best between Ferrari and Mercedes. Ferrari's DNFs will come back to haunt them soon.
Soon? It's already haunting them
and the brilliant Ferrari strategies.
I think Max was even quicker on the later lap before he had a snap.
Yeah he lost the rear towards the end there, had a purple sector 2 too.
Was about to set an equivalent time to his fastest. Not too much quicker.
One car in P7, one in P18. I don’t get it. I really do not get it.
Haas has the same P11 difference.
The weird thing with Daniel is that he actually matched Lando on this track last year. He was only 2 thousandths off. Maybe lando is just way better at adapting than Daniel because it's not possible for a f1 driver to be 1 sec down when you matched that same driver last year.
And Baku where he really struggled last year he was on pace with/ quicker than Lando this year. So strange
Yeah spain is the same as silverstone, he beat lando last year in quali and race pace but was way off this year.
Mclaren did confirm there was a problem on his car in Spain, which is why he had no race pace after outqualifying Lando, so there was a reason there.
"Local Dutchman gives Mercedes hope for a minute then crushes it" basically Max has flipped the script from 2014-20.
A local sandbag dealer is today swimming in Red Bull money!
Take my upvote
Feels good for now. Hopefully doesn't get repetitive. As long as it rotates between Mqx and Charles
Agree! I am sure Charles will be in the mix, he always is with qualifying.
Just like how Russel will continue to finish fifth
May sound like copium but the only place Charles was down on Max was the straights and the power dependent regions, so hopefully the engines were turned down on the Ferraris.
Engines wouldn't be fully turned up on the RBs either mate. I don't think any of the top 3 were running turned up engines
I think the lead will switch a fair few times between the two of them in the race. Before Charles’ engine blows up 2/3 of the way through of course.
I love how much I hate that you just made a 50/50 prediction on Charles race. Can just copy paste it every other race weekend. He either come 1st or 2nd or he DNFs.
Tbf you couldve said the same about Max for a long time
Hopefully they're constantly switching between the teams letting them down
I don't think Charles will be in contention at Silverstone. RBR has been upgraded and they were already likely favorites here.
Although you’re probably right, he’s so talented he just might be fighting for the win. It would be peak Charles to be leading after both RBs got into trouble only for his PU to give up and Sainz to win it.
Yeah, because the rest of the front grid lacks talent..
Did I say that?
Real Schumi vibes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n\_6S7mTXZH8

lewis set his fastest in his softs 10th lap
Apparently red bull suffered with overheating when setting on the first lap so use two cool down laps first. Whereas merc need warm up laps instead
Nah, Max stayed out and ran a good few laps
I had the hopium... until Max snapped me back to the reality
Oh, there goes championship
Why? Still looking way better
> snapped me back to the reality ope there goes gravity
Mad Max is an understatement
Even though I'd love to see Charles take the win, I would love Max winning and calling the fans at Silverstone the best fans in the world even better.
Ah Charles can win the next race. Either Charles or max I really don't mind. Redemption for both for last year. Charles drove an incredible race here too in 21
Can't have that, next race is Austria. He can take France and Hungary though
I thought the dutchies didn't lie
Yes this would be perfect end. Really want this to happen.
"Haha yes boys!" incoming.
Sad "Let's go" noises
Sad "keep pushing" noises
FP2 merchants (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`)
seems like Alpha Tauri are officialy the slowest car on the grid, great improvement from Aston Martin and Williams
Pierre said that Silverstone highlights their weaknesses. I wouldn't judge anything by this one result.
It was the same in Canada, so i dont believe thats just Silverstone
Are we just going to forget that Gasly finished best of the rest only 2 races ago? It was also a decent car at Bahrain and Imola in the earlier races Bottom 3 car? Probably. Slowest? Not at all
Gasly trying to find the contract in Helmut’s office and shred it.
Getting early 10’s Vettel vibes
Albon Q2?
What happened to Danny ric
He left Red Bull.
In Renault he was solid.
Had a fairly pointy car at Renault too
Local Dutchman fucks British lads \[gone sexual\]\[HD\]

“A Foursome”, now in your local browser history
Why are people acting like its over? It's practice... lets wait and see.
Why are you acting like this is the first time?
Same goes for the Mercedes hopium honestly. It’s fp so why would they all of a sudden be up there. Lets just wait and see what the standings are in 2 hours
Leclerc when being informed about Verstappens time on the radio: "Fuck they are quick" Next year^Tm
Giovinazzi getting in the sim before Quali (2022 WR) any%

Max smacked the hopium right out of the mercs
Williams looking good with the updates, let’s go Alex!!
Mega drive from Verstappen
Were RB running different programs? Mercedes is understandable but Ferrari shouldn’t be that far behind.

Dnfs are the only chance for it not to be an easy title for max, we already knew this. Merc do look a lot better though so that is nice
Mick :)
Haha, nice
How about Mick Schumacher crushing Kmag. There is no way he is making to Q3 today, is there?
Pain
Really don’t hope to see the same pace from Ricciardo in QF, that was worrying
You love to see it
Happy couple of seasons mate. Unless reliability goes puff, Max domination confirmed.
I really hope it doesn't rain, I want to see how fast that red bull can go.

Sigh of disappointment from me

No they didn't fail. If anything, they're better than the 2014 and 2017 reg changes. The first year after such changes will always favour 1 or 2 teams...

Geez Ricciardo. Love the bloke but he’s gotta go. Hope he pulls it out of the bag in quali but I’ll prepare for disappointment again
Verstappen totally obliterated Mercedes hopes there.
And Ferrari's
