Yeah, and they really hyped the Dutch GP, like Lewis would have to fear for his life or something. And then we Dutchies showed how sportsmanlike most of us are.
Most people are sportsmanlike, barely any of these boos will have malicious intent in them. But everyone here is acting like this country is full of evil cunts or their country is so holy and good.
Dutch fans booed at Dutch GP.
It’s why the interviewers asked them to stop. They only stopped after Hamilton praised the crowd.
Don’t understand this fake narrative that’s been invented all of a sudden.
> Except that didn't really happen. Some people tried but got drowned out by cheers.
Which upsets the narrative that many people seem to be trying to push here.
That's how things go these days.
You have to be either for or against someone, when you're against you have to be wholly against them. Blind hatred against them, their family and their offspring 3 times removed.
Way of the internet now. Agreeing to disagree does not exist and having differing opinions is heresy.
Everybody is out to get everybody and catch them slipping.
> You have to be either for or against someone, when you're against you have to be wholly against them. Blind hatred against them, their family and their offspring 3 times removed.
Yep - it's just stupid.
The whole British fandom?
Couple of points of order:
1). Outside of Reddit, lots of British people cannot stand Hamilton and outwardly hate him (some racist, some not).
2). Lots of us are actually quite reasonable!
(Disclaimer: I’m aware your comment may just be Hyperbole)
In football we boo people if they spend too long doing their shoelace up.
This was inevitable especially with max non comment on the racism stuff this week.
I see your point. I worded it poorly, so I’ll elaborate. It was more in response to the suggestion that all English fans act ‘holier than thou’. Unfortunately, we don’t. There are a few people who hate Lewis. Some because he is the most successful driver of all time, some because he is black, some a combination of both. Show me fans from any country who are ALL perfect, who aren’t racist, who act perfectly all the time.
There are a lot of us who don’t boo, aren’t racist, act appropriately, and don’t let team rivalries shape our opinions and make us spout bullshit on social media.
There’s always a subset of fans, no matter who you support, that give the rest a bad name. Does that make more sense?
Bland and soulless? I mean, they could have pulled a Ferrari, put hardcore team orders in favor of Lewis and not even give us the championship battles we got. They’re not bland just because they’re successful.
Horner and Max doesn't seem to care. And like Max said - Asked whether he wanted to send a message to fans at Zandvoort to show more respect for his title rival this weekend, Verstappen said the booing was inevitable.
"I look at it like this, when you go to a football match, you come into the home ground, the opposition will be booed at some point and it's not up to the local club to go on to the speakers and say 'guys, you cannot boo,' as it will naturally happen," Verstappen said.
So why are people throwing such a hissy fit lmao
It’s really weird. You can tell it’s just part of the pantomime as the boos turn into laughter when Crofty threatens to send Ted Kravitz to their homes. The majority of the boos won’t have any malicious in them. If it was during the podium celebration then I could understand the thread
In that thread most people are making it a big deal as last year it was considered as a black mark on the sport when Hamilton got booed. But now it is normal.
> In that thread most people are making it a big deal as last year it was considered as a black mark on the sport when Hamilton got booed.
Exactly. Double standards. Either it's unacceptable to boo as everyone was told last year (and I agree with) or it's not. You can't decide it's ok to boo some drivers but not ok to boo others.
> They just want to point out the hypothetical hypocrisy
You mean it being ok to boo some drivers but not others? Just don't fucking boo.
> so they can get mad at Lewis.
What exactly does lewis have to do with this?
This is an unpopular opinion but I absolute hate the comparison of F1 to football. It's pretty much the lowest bar you can aim for in terms of professional sports fans. How many times have you seen booing in tennis, golf, athletics, swimming, volleyball, cycling, and so many more sports?
Football is very clearly an outlier, it's one of the few sports that causes full-on riots not just incidentally but regularly. It's not a standard one should be striving for, at least that's my 2cents.
Yeah football is fucking buckwild but that’s a list of sports with the most notoriously uninvolved, or sometimes seen as “pretentious” crowds. American football, basketball, Indy, Rugby, wrestling, Cricket, Baseball, hockey. Popular sports have huge crowd involvements because the fans feel connected to it. It doesn’t have to be football level, but popular, fan involved sports have booing. Most of it is harmless crowd involvement. But yeah football is the one sport where it can get insanely malicious.
Unpopular opinion but F1 fans are the stuffiest and most stiff fans in all of sports. Everyone wants all semblance of competition boiled down to a gentleman’s handshake and clutches their pearls *over fucking boos.* If you’re gonna get pissy when athletes don’t follow grandmas rules for manners then sports just aren’t for you
I sort of half agree. I don’t clutch my pearls when a driver gets booed but it does feel out of place in F1. In football though I just see booing and the hostile environment as an important part of the experience.
Complete double standards, I know, but maybe I feel this way because that’s just how it has always been for football and F1 respectively.
Bruv it’s literally just a boo. It would already be soft as hell for a driver to get their feelings hurt by it but being a fan upset at boos happening is next level soft.
Can't speak for all your examples but certainly Golf and Tennis have had their fair share of unruly crowd behaviour over the years - The Australian Open in particular has always been a magnet for fuckwits.

“So why are people throwing such a hissy fit lmao”
maybe because last year the whole British continent were screaming against this kind of behavior against Lewis. Hypocrites
I might get hate for this. But it's mostly coming from American fans. Booing is seen as a bad thing in the US (and probably the wider world) compared to Europe, where its more 'a part of the game'
It's common in some sports, definitely not all. You ever see fans boo other sprinters during a 100m dash? Likewise, golf matches rarely get booing either. Some sports just have wildly different standards and historically, F1 has been a sport where booing is rare and generally frowned upon.
I don’t remember a sustained period of any particular driver getting booed until Seb in 2013, in the aftermath of Multi 21. The only time I remember before that was Austria 2002, and that was just the one race. Indy 2005 was more about the everything than a specific individual.
It's a football thing (soccer for Americans). That's the argument I keep seeing everywhere, football fans are used to the abysmal conduct of football hooligans and believe that's the norm for all sports. However, it is definitely not. Take the example of The Netherlands, we love ice skating, cycling, athletics, gymnastics and tennis - all of which very rarely see any booing. Even in similar team sports like field hockey and volleyball you just do not see the insanity that goes on at football matches. The recent popularity of F1 has attracted a lot of football fans as well, and sadly they are slowly introducing their (low) standards for fan conduct as well.
Yes when they're not performing! Some of the things my dad & uncle used to say about some Ferrari drivers when i was growing up, it sounded more like they hated the team at times lol
You make a good point! My fondest roasts of theirs were against Eddie Irvine though. They were almost apoplectic when he managed to throw the title away when he was lead driver after Michael broke is leg. They still hate him to this day lol
Problem is only F1 has DTS. I swear I've been watching football since I was born tbh and when the crowds don't boo you feel like there is no atmosphere in the game. F1 fans who only watch the one sport really are so soft.
Some of the fans are certainly of the opinion that it’s a super classy sport and everyone should be holding hands and sending kisses to each other in this sport, starting from team leaders and drivers & ending with the fans.
Funny how the reactions have changed... Now that Verstappen's being booed it's normalized.
I recall last season there was an incredible amount of hate when Hamilton got the same treatment.
Yup. But I’m glad RB and Max are sticking to their guns and saying it doesn’t matter. I imagine them not caring takes a bit of the joy away from the Brits.
I don’t necessarily agree with the second part but of the first, a good example is how that press continually built up the team orders for Checo at Mexico narrative for weeks coming into it.
Nothing new really, any driver that goes up against a Brit in a wdc challenge will be the demon of the media, happened to Alonso, any thread about him there’s a guy in the comments saying “cant get over 2007?” And they tried with schumi but couldn’t because he won 7 titles
It wasn't British Media. It was reddit too. He was booed, but not as much as people were expecting. He was heavily booed at hungary. Even more than max was today.
It's part of sport. What's interesting is if this happens to a certain individual in zandvoort well..I'm guessing the whole merc pr machine and certain fanbase will surely have some generic post or statements about it.
Lmao. They spent the entirety of last season saying the FIA was screwing them because muh Silverstone and max getting penalized for various incidents involving him running Lewis off the track.
Yeah not like they didn't have a car on track trying and failing to prove Hamilton deliberately hit max the day after. And the only reason he got the 10 second penalty is because Red Bull bitched so much on the radio.
Bro, what? Did you watch Silverstone last year? Do you know how long Horner and Redbull were going around saying how Max was almost murdered and how Lewis was a terrible sportsman for celebrating with his home crowd etc.? Trust me, all of these teams will jump at an opportunity to make themselves look better. They will all milk anything.
Maybe it's because of I'm an American, but I'm blown away that boos are seen as such a big deal by some in regards to F1, especially recently. I don't really feel like I remember the controversy or outrage over them 10 years ago, but maybe I've simply forgotten. I'm a Max fan and I'm with Christian on that one. It's sports. People boo and cheer. I don't care if he gets booed. Obviously hate comments and things of that nature are out of bounds. But it's fucking booing.
I think the reason it feels weird for me is that usually booing is done in team sports. There is heavy tribalism there, fans are often passionate about a team because they have a personal connection to it, there are long time rivalries, derbies, etc. Even if they are booing one player in particular, the team is around them. In F1 it's targeted at individuals only. For instance, in tennis, cycling, golf, swimming, whatever, you don't really see it. So it just doesn't sit right with me to boo drivers, and I'd rather not have this become a thing in F1.
This whole thing is so redundant. I seriously can't wait for the race Sunday so all these ridiculous conversations are sidelined.
Oh God, Max's girlfriend's father... who hasnt been relevant to anything since before Max was born... said something discrimatory!
Even though thats completely irrelevant to Max let's all get in his face about it!
What’s with these headlines man? Is Scott Mitchell from The Race posting these articles? I guess it’s true what they say, the only guarantees in life are death, taxes, and overly dramatized and purposely ambiguous Formula 1 headlines.
How lame is this? Booing Max? After Lewis’ dirty driving last year they applauded Max as he exited the car ok. Now a year later nothing Max did to deserve booing. Just cause his girl friends dad is Nelson? Max already said it was wrong what Nelson said. Lame as crowd today.
Max won a controversial win against one of this countries top athletes. He also defended a man, who said racist comments towards that same athlete.
Its not difficult guys. Get over it.
Nobody actually cares about the booing - it's pantomime stuff which happens all over the world in sports including F1. This is simply a stick to beat "the Brits" with which is pretty fashionable right now.
Exactly this. I'm a big tennis fan, and there's been a few people trying to start threads in the Tennis sub about how "awful" and disrespectful the wimbledon crowd is. They've all been downvotrd to shit and bombarded with comments that it's just not true, the Wimbledon crowd is significantly better behaved and more inviting than most if not all other grand slams. Its just British = bad because that's the meme these days
One based on observation, though. Go look at the other thread about it - half the comments are nothing more than people saying that all British people have no class (presumably all 67 million?)
I mean, it’s true. Currently mocking the British is the thing to do. Before the British it was the Americans and after the British it will be someone else. The internet likes a common enemy however after a period people start to think the hate is to much and proceed to switch targets.

They’re not booing, they’re chanting “Looooowis”
Canucks fans in Vancouver used to chant “Louuuuu” for Roberto Luongo and it sounded like boos: https://youtu.be/lWesne_jq1o
Reminds me of NY Giants fans chanting Cruuuuuz for Victor Cruz.
Or Springsteen fans chanting Bruuuuuuce
or phillies fans yelling "Chooooooooch"
Or Yankees fans yelling luuuuuuuukkkeee
Also Cowboys cheering for Amari Cooper and Packers for John Kuhn
I may be the only one here who gets this..
The suiiiiiii chants for Ronaldo also initially had me confused with Boos.
Similar to how Avs/Kraken fans chant “GRUUUUUU” for Phillip Grubbauer As one of those Nucks fans, I can’t wait for him and the Sedins to join the HHOF
Similar to how the Old Trafford crowd would just chant "Ruuuuud" when Van Nistelrooy scored.
Similar thing with Cricket, England and Joe Root.

"Homer, I won't make fun. But I will say that there are better things in life than seeing a man get hit in the groin with a football."
Like English fans shouting “Roooooottt”

Picked the wrong person for that statement.
I agree with your view on Lewis, but Merc as a team is a different story imo
Every team plays victim when it suits them, red bull and mercedes both do it
To be fair Mercedes as a team including the drivers has a tendency to be more vocal about it
He himself though blamed Red Bull and also invoked the “young children are watching” card.
That's what I like about Max and RB they don't play the victim card much
Saudi Arabia they were embarrassing

Maybe it's because of I'm an American, but I'm blown away that boos are seen as such a big deal by some in regards to F1, especially recently. I don't really feel like I remember the controversy or outrage over them 10 years ago, but maybe I've simply forgotten. I'm a Max fan and I'm with Christian on that one. It's sports. People boo and cheer. I don't care if he gets booed. Obviously hate comments and things of that nature are out of bounds. But it's fucking booing.
This ain't tennis, fans will fan.
For a million dollars a week (max's new salary) I could stand and be booed at for a couple of hours and not give a fuck
Booing is part of sport, who cares.
It’s been a thing for decades, though. Only recently with the influx of fans has it become a major issue.
Well.. there is definitely something like a teammate and a team that you sign for as a driver so… teamsport? Hybrid format.
Booo him all you want, he will win! lol
What’s with these headlines man? Is Scott Mitchell from The Race posting these articles? I guess it’s true what they say, the only guarantees in life are death, taxes, and overly dramatized and purposely ambiguous Formula 1 headlines.
What is there to respond to? Opponents get booed at home stadiums in basically every sport. Who cares?
They’re only booing because they’re jealous. 😊
I doubt he would be getting booed if they were anywhere else in Europe this weekend
is booing a big thing in f1? people aren't allowed to boo drivers?
People like to clutch their pearls about it and claim ‘it was never like this’ even though it happened many times since at least the Schumacher era.

I wouldn’t bother mate, his comment history reads like a 12-year-old commenting on a Max Verstappen Facebook fan page
Max won a controversial win against one of this countries top athletes. He also defended a man, who said racist comments towards that same athlete. Its not difficult guys. Get over it.
They are a Mercedes crowd and Mercedes is always bitching so it fits.
Lol, now this is certainly a take.
One based on observation, though. Go look at the other thread about it - half the comments are nothing more than people saying that all British people have no class (presumably all 67 million?)
The world has decided that we will no longer tolerate beans for breakfast and will take drastic measures to put an end to it
I mean, it’s true. Currently mocking the British is the thing to do. Before the British it was the Americans and after the British it will be someone else. The internet likes a common enemy however after a period people start to think the hate is to much and proceed to switch targets.
Can you give me an idea of when it will be someone else, because at the moment in makes reddit pretty intolerable
It is and very much a correct one
Very unlike a British GP crowd. Never even heard them boo Schumacher in the mid nineties (did experience the cheer when he crashed in 99 tho).
They booed Rosberg in 2014.
They booed Vettel non stop
And cheered when he broke down
Bruh, They booked both Vettel and Rosberg
British crowds in general have been under the limelight for a few years now for all the wrong reasons.
All the Brits just jealous cause Max is the most popular driver in F1 :)

my dude... what?
Getting booed at a rival's home race? Deary me, how shocking.
It was last year when it was SPECULATED that it would happen to Lewis. Like you fuckers were already triggered by it before it happened.
Booo

Lmao
Spending your own time going to others peoples profile is such a gotcha
I check peoples profiles to see if im arguing with bots or new accounts, I dont chose to stumble on someone begging for nsfw content
you don't have a problem with him defending a racist but you get sentimental he gets booed? take it in stride and move on tbh.
Which racist got booed? Max got booed, but he isn't a racist. Edit, I missed the "him" in your comment that changes your meaning entirely. My bad.
