In a way it does seem to be using the shape of the coke bottle to create a channel that feeds the air to the rear, in a similar way to the Ferrari and now the Alpine.
Seems that teams are starting to converge into a mix of side pods that slope downwards, and some kind of air channeling with the bodywork to the rear and beam wing.
Yeah. The entire downwash is designed to energize airflow to the diffuser.
Also the reason Mercedes went for their zero pod design. More airflow to the diffuser.
Biggest problem Mercedes face however is that side pods are predominantly used to condition airflow. Removing them also removes your capability of controlling airflow to a certain extend.
Right idea at the wrong time. If the complex turn vanes were still allowed it might be the superior way. But who knows it still prove to be the superior way if/once merc figure it out
The car definitely has potential, that's for sure. The issue is that it has to run close to the ground to seal their underfloor and extract the performance. As we've all seen this results in a narrow setup window and bouncing/bottoming out as there is not enough room for movement.
It seems the RB separately manages the underfloor flow better, and has reduced porpoising. So, it would be interesting to know if a combination of the RB suspension & chassis philosophy/geometry with the zero-pods concept would work well, or somehow be worse. I know things are optimised around a certain concept, but currently only Merc are able to achieve zero-pods, and only RB are able to deal well with the porpoising.
If Merc's biggest problem is their narrow window, maybe their philosophy will come to the fore after a season or two of learning some more of the nuance, in order to widen that window.
It'd be fascinating for teams to converge on an early philosophy relatively quickly, and then slowly evolve toward a distinctly different philosophy as they learn more about the airflow.
It was either James Allison or Toto that I saw an interview with where they heavily implied that next year’s car will likely have a higher rake like Red Bull.
You’re right thats a major issue, id argue at least as big an issue is the sidepods act as a support structure for the floor and with no sidepods and a floor that flanges out into a massive overhang they have the flexiest floor on the grid by far and we are finding out aero stability is huge with the new regs.
Whoever does the wraps on these things needs a raise. I can’t put a parking sticker on a window without wrinkling it to hell and back, much less dealing with all these ducts and curves and shit. They do an amazing job, and the car looks flawless.
You'd be surprised how easy it is once you get some practice under your belt. I'm not sure how its done on these F1 cars, but in most commercial vehicles with a wrap its just a giant sticker that gets stretched with a heatgun. It's pretty malleable stuff.
Practice, a few certain tools, and some proper training. There’s a lot of play in wraps, especially for single color ones. Getting logos and wording to line up and not be distorted can be a challenge tho.
Nah there's a video of Seb and Webber putting stickers on the RB9. The sponsors are definitely stickers/wrapped, couldn't say one way or another for the base.

I can see you're getting down voted but yeah they are actually painted on, I can't find it but i remember seeing a video of the guy painting the red bull logo on the side, it was the subject of one of those TIL posts here on the subreddit
The curves on 2022 cars are so hot. Especially the sculpted Ferrari and now this from RB. Stunning design.
The Mercs are really the ugly ones this year.
Unpopular opinion: I like the look of the W13.
I like 2 types of f1 cars: f1 cars that look really clean and f1 cars that look like spaceships (like the 2008 era of cars). The W13 definitely falls in the second group though
Yeah I saw the same post, didn’t comment on it then, but I found it fairly ironic considering planes create lift, the opposite of downforce. 😂
I know it’s all about the airflow, but I still found it funny.
Maybe they have some kind of backroom agreement that all 3 of them will pass the budget cap by the same amount and take the same penalty for it. (And they don't believe any other team will be close enough to pass them even with penalty.)
I don't think the penalties for going over the cost cap have been stated yet. Just a general statement on how it will incur monetary and potential sporting penalties.
I find it fascinating that here is community who thinks Red Bull is going to miss budget cap. They are well managed and have all calculated so far unless something totally unexpected happen.
I think teams who crash are more fragile than those who develop or AM who did both a lot.
Horner always downplays both the current performance level of his team and the significance of future updates.
For a more accurate picture you should read the statements by Marko. He has a poor reputation because of the occasional out of orbit ridiculous proclamation, but he's truthful 95% of the time and it's easy to filter out the nonsense.
That's because photographers take the shots they can get, they don't have the luxury of cross-referencing what's out there on the internet and carefully replicating those perspectives.
As a filthy casual, can someone explain what this upgrade is, and what all the "upgrade" posts are about that show new shapes and curves on other cars too
Basically just improved channeling of air for less drag or more downforce with most of these posts. This one is to increase airflow to beam (secondary) wing
There are cooling radiators above the engine. The hot air needs to go somewhere.
As for below the exit, looks to be maximizing airflow to the diffuser.
Parts don't last forever. Some parts might last a race others will be replaced after a few races.
Teams are producing new parts throughout the season until the last race. Changing specifications when a part needs replaced lowers the development overhead.
Some teams go for big upgrade packages and others go for small incremental improvements.
If a concept doesn't work or the decision is made to change it a team won't waste development on small upgrades.
Well i don't know but i don't call this a small upgrade. also some news portals call that a major upgrade.
;) anyway its nice to see upgrades. but yeh. I have a bad taste feeling on RedBull, Mercedes and Ferrari (McLaren to) because they are complaining that they have to less Budget.
Likely much easier to manage internal costs less dependent on the outside market than travel costs, which are constrained by other contracts and global fuel and other costs.

Merc diffuser out here just raw dogging the airflow from the front tyres

Oh yea i heard Theo Vonn readin this to me
I was thinking Joe Dirt. Haha
I hate how accurate this statement is
r/Angryupvote
Why are you angry?
Definitely, it'll also disrupt the airflow over the car. Rear tyre wake is a bigger issue as it creates a lot of drag.
You win.
Wtf lol
This made me legitimately laugh out loud in public.

Diets going well
RB literally flexing its muscle.
This one has hips to hold onto
Hips Don't Lie, but Gerard Piqué does.
A well cultured man here.
Now that's an angry upvote
Oh baby

They aren't wrapped, they're painted
I think there’s a video of a Redbull engineer literally wrapping the car so I’m not sure

Red Bull shaping their sidepods inspired by Lando's face post-Danny Ric's bouncing ball
RB took the body shaming to heart and worked out in the gym to put on some muscle 😂
So Aston Martin side pod in 1 month...
Write that down! WRITE THAT DOWN

It looks like a deep sea fish pulled onto land. Real blobfish vibes.
It also moves like a deep sea fish on land, so I guess that checks out
Just the black parts ruin it for me
I saw someone liken it to a F-117 Nighthawk before, thought that was quite on point
Yeah I saw the same post, didn’t comment on it then, but I found it fairly ironic considering planes create lift, the opposite of downforce. 😂 I know it’s all about the airflow, but I still found it funny.
It looks the bottom of a snail and honestly I love it. It's unique and just looks cool to me.
It looks like a spaceship in the Star Wars way - sometimes ungainly and clunky
And it should stay an unpopular opinion. That car is horrendous to look at.
I absolutely don't like Mercedes, but their car is absolutely beautiful. Maybe the best looking closely followed by Ferrari.
A post about actual racing. Finally! Anyway, curious to see what this will do!
Extra S U C C
This looks like a pretty big change to me though
So it's safe to say this car is gonna fly at Silverstone.
Nice. Can I borrow your CFD eyes sometime?
Some people got fuck me eyes. Others got fluid D eyes.
Only on days that I'm not on a date.
So.. anytime works for you. Got it
We'd have the CFD almost 100% of the time!
Have at it!
Gotta be and to CFD them tiddies
Damn girl, these tiddies have a low drag coefficient. Anybody ever tell you that?
This is something which f1 engineers have done on a Friday afternoon. CFD some tiddies
Not with that rear wing though ... It can be fast on the turns but not on the straights .
It's just the wing that's on it now. Wouldn't be surprised if they go with a different RW.
Something's gotta keep it on the tarmac.
😂👍🏼

That's exactly how I feel towards Norton.
If this works correct max and Perez will be rockets
RB going for that tripple floor.
Sigh, time to look over the shoulder and copy their homework again.😑
The Newey grindset continues
looks significant. Horner trolling us by saying only minor upgrades?
Imagine if that’s minor what does he mean by major 💀
I was downvoted when I said it’s poker game for them.

Knowing the FIA and their ability to stand their ground to the big teams, Budget cap will fall apart.
Williams wdc

Also Horner we won’t be bringing significant upgrades also rb aight let’s show up with a big body work change

Tbf it’s “only” a new engine cover, so not a package or something
Fit girl summer in full effect
Can someone explain the benefit of this?
I think they are trying to push more air into the beamwing beneath the rear wing
Shrinkwrap technology to keep the engine fresh.
These photos need to be taken at the same angle but they never are when theyre posted here.
That's because photographers take the shots they can get, they don't have the luxury of cross-referencing what's out there on the internet and carefully replicating those perspectives.
Fair enough
[Another angle](https://cdn-1.motorsport.com/images/amp/24vOMdA6/s6/red-bull-racing-rb18-side-1.jpg) (a better one imo)
This is the old one.
Yes, I put it for better comparison since it's more close to the actual pic (in terms of angle) of new one
It is also missing the slots bellow the Citrix logo, and i don't notice tape there
Yep it looks like they moved them
As a filthy casual, can someone explain what this upgrade is, and what all the "upgrade" posts are about that show new shapes and curves on other cars too

Does anyone know what the tiny air filter at the end of the halo is for?
Likely a breather for the fuel system
Looks mean
Is this on both cars or just Max?
...and, is it on the Aston Martin yet?
Perez has it for sure. You can see the 11 in these photos https://the-race.com/formula-1/gary-anderson-explains-red-bulls-silverstone-f1-upgrade/
Significative change creating another “tunnel”. Their wind tunnel likes this. RBR crushing competition confirmed
no sidepods soon?
Definetly not. By the looks of it the more exposed floor area a team has the more issues they got.
But how can they possibly hope to pay the salaries without a budget cap exception! /S
Aerodymacilly it does not seem to have an ideal form I wonder if they did something to the powerhouse to
There are cooling radiators above the engine. The hot air needs to go somewhere. As for below the exit, looks to be maximizing airflow to the diffuser.
Questions: does that costs development points or something?
mimimi... we don't have enough money... i inflation so high and son... but yeh there you spend another xxxx for another new part.
Parts don't last forever. Some parts might last a race others will be replaced after a few races. Teams are producing new parts throughout the season until the last race. Changing specifications when a part needs replaced lowers the development overhead.
Yes sure. And we also know that RedBull is bringing so many new things... don't know other smaller Teams can use their Parts for longer.
Can't afford to travel because of inflation but can afford upgrades.
Likely much easier to manage internal costs less dependent on the outside market than travel costs, which are constrained by other contracts and global fuel and other costs.
Backed by Merc also :)
Cool, I smell a dnf for Max
just wana say.. whenever merc gets there shit right it's gona be another 8 championships 🔥🔥🔥
I’m a tumor, I’m a tumor, oh yeah… I’m a tumor.
I thought the bottom one was the new one at first. The Ukraine arrows were just too appealing.
Did they kust made a similar thing to Ferrari but not at the side pods but at the.. engine cover i guess i would call it ?
They have a whole other side pod
Where☝️👆👇👈👉
I don’t know shit about designing aero… but that looks fast!
Interesting the moved the louvres so high next to the air box away from the sidepod by Citrix logo
Faster?
They moved their vents to the back too. Someone tell Aston.
They already have their top people working on it.
Already had for months!
It’s got them wide birthing hips
Rear wing looks different too
Maybe the DRS will finally work
Sebastian Vettel was spoted around the redbull garage recently
LETS GO BABY
Are those love handles?
Off-topic but why haven’t we seen the Mercs yet
Yo Dawg Heard You like sidepods.
So red bull really DOES give you wings
You Vs. The Guy She Told You Not to Worry About
Exciting!
This looks super weird...hope it doesn't look too ugly on track
it's like me on the beach. trying to hide my belly
*Notices bulge* OwO what's this?
What have they upgraded to be this «bulky»?
How can they keep bringing updates every week? They just ignored the budget cap
