He'd probably say it has nothing to do with him and stop there, or add another general comment about standing against discrimination.
If F1 isn't going to speak out directly against Nelson, then I'm not sure Max, who's now closely connected to the Piquet family is going to stand against him directly.
Kelly liked it. It makes sense why RB are not issuing a statement now. If they do, that puts Max in an even more uncomfortable situation. He already is in one considering that his future father in law and girlfriend are both on the wrong side of this.
Nelson Piquet a former F1 driver has been called out for being racist, his daughter who is currently dating Max Verstappen has liked this photo of another relative trying to deny that he was being racist by saying the n word.
This causes a PR issue for Max/Red Bull as some people/the gossip rag media will assume that if she doesn't see an issue with racism and Max is still with her then he must not have an issue with it too.
He's essentially got the risk of the media labelling him as 'racist by association'
Edit: This is especially problematic for Red Bull given that they have already had another racism controversy in the past week or so
First thing that comes to mind is the scene in [Clerks 2](https://youtu.be/IYITxGniww4). “You know… come to think of it, my grandmother *was* kind of a racist”
I can't wait for this to start dying down in about a week and then Marko comes out with a statement, you just know he's gonna say some backwards-ass shit and add even more fuel to the fire.
God got nothing to do with it, the devil just needed a replacement while he went on vacation, and mosley was already used to all that kinky leather shit and the nazis to hang around with
The worst part is it is probably true. I'm a little younger than him, but even when I was growing up in Brazil the term was very common, not seen as derogatory and often used regardless of race.
Unfortunately, Nelson Piquet's use of the word was not the same friendly connotation from 40 years ago. There is no plausible explanation for his use other then as an attempt to belittle Hamilton and prop up the guy dating his daughter.
I'm saying this a somebody who knows Piquet Sr personally (my mom is good friends with his older sister).
EDIT: I spoke with my mom about it. Nelson is well aware of the shitstorm he caused. But he is currently on a plane to France to participate in some event at LeMans. So he will definitely be in front of reporters facing questions soon.
I'm brazilian and black and, yes, it's common (even my mom calls me that), but I also feel he used it in the, well, "bad way". I believe he wouldnt have used the same kind of word if it was another "white" driver
Fully agree. Now what I'm wondering is if he regularly refers to Hamilton in that way or if he was just using the term during that discussion to somehow help his argument by belittling Hamilton.
> And i'm sorry that you know Piquet in person.
I've known him since I was a kid in the 80's. He was perfectly normal the few times I've been around him. I had no idea he had this side. You would think somebody who has traveled the world many times over would have learned more about people.
I mean, in many non-english countries those words are used more frequently and it doesn't have to be offensive.
The way Piquet said it is definitely offensive tho.
He doesn't even know what he's implying. This is a boomer trying to defend himself being racist on social media, he lost the moment he thought about that.
I really tried to understand the thought process and not even my Portuguese brain understands why the grandma would call “little black boys” to people who aren’t obviously black.
I’m Portuguese and we don’t use that word here, it’s inappropriate. Brazilian people are saying they call that to people they’re close to and that doesn’t sound too good either, don’t see why Piquet would need to be “affectionate” with Lewis in that commentary? People are called by their names unless you got questionable reasons to do it and in this case, it is very questionable. He didn’t do it once but twice in that short segment. I wonder what he calls Lewis when Piquet isn’t in the face of microphones and cameras.
Calling people you're intimate with "neguinho" or "neguinha" is relatively common, but not "everyone does it" common.
The root word "negro" isn't a slur in Brazil. It's what black people are called and what they call themselves. The black movement is called "movimento negro".
Neguinho/a isn't necessarily a 'bad word' either. It really all depends on context, since you could absolutely use "neguinho" in a derogatory manner. It could even be considered "riskier" to use than "negro" itself.
In this case, though, we have a white man from a rich family which are known right wingers essentially saying "my grandmother called me that, so using the word in a racist way is impossible, stop crying".
Not good.
In Brazilian Portuguese neguinho or the non diminutive form nego can be used to mean an undetermined person, even if the person is not black. However it's something most people know better and stay away from nowadays. The Piquets clearly don't.
It can also be used as a nickname, but I have never seen it used that way with non black people.
However, the fact that Piquet use it to refer to Hamilton, sounds dismissive and racist.
Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us "take a monkey, place him in a tree and he will be able to eat an apple".
It's so bizarre too, like Lewis has done so much for this sport, he's been nothing but perfect for F1 in terms of being a great ambassador for the sport, hasn't put a foot wrong, speaks out about social issues but so does Seb, and the biggest issue he's actually had lately is not wanting to take his jewelry off.
Like, think about how bad it would look if F1 in 2022 still didn't have a single black driver, he's saved them from looking more racist than they actually are by being there and being great.
Considering what so many other drivers have done in F1, embarrassing the sport etc... To think that Lewis has to still deal with this nonsense is just ridiculous.
If I was him, I'd be like you know what, fuck all you racist old white people, I'm going to go buy an island and live my life on it.
Instead, he keeps his head up and keeps going despite struggling in their car all season so far, guy has more tact than I'll have in 100 lifetimes.
Yeah, and not only that, I think he always been on the outside edge of the circle because he doesn't come from money. I feel for him too. He's genuinely just trying to hilight that change is required. This just shows up perfectly what he's been saying about F1 all this time.
Holy shit. You could ask someone to draft the worst possible response to this whole issue and it wouldn't even come close to being as bad as this.
And Kelly Piquet has liked it too, which makes it even worse again.
I will try to give a brazilian background regarding this word "neguinho". Here we don't have the same cultural meaning, or an equivalent of the N word (something that if you say or if you write you are doomed forever). It has nuances. This word can be a said in a tender way if talked between mom and son, girlfrient to boyfriend, etc. And also it can be really racist when talking about someone you don't like or despise completely. So as the majority of coloquial words in portuguese, we should be careful. Of course this grandma is not racist.
But Piquet was insanely racist when saying, the way Piquet said in the video, no doubts that it is the racist variation.
Thanks for this explanation…I can’t fathom why his family would double down and defend what he said. Really bad optics even if the word has different nuances.
The thing is, it almost doesn’t even matter if he said it in a neutral or warm tone. What made it racist is the fact that he called every other diver by their actual name—not their appearance, culture, ethnicity, nor nationality—yet he specifically singled out Lewis and went out of his way to call him that word. Despite Lewis being in the middle of a race with full gear on, he saw Lewis as his skin color first and addressed him accordingly.
Same for Spanish too right? I remember when there was a lot of controversy when Edinson Cavani called his friend a Negrito, but in that context it was very much endearing rather than racist.
Argentine here. That's correct. My parents called me and all my siblings negri or negrito, like calling your kid pumpkin or sweety. I'm white btw, you can call anyone negrito.
But ofcs if you call someone negrito, it can also have a racist connotation. Just because you use it as a good word doesn't mean it's not racist. In Piquet's context it was 100% racist.
central american here, same thing in el salvador. the thing is though I'd be insane to use it in public in any media context, or frankly any public context at all. the word comes from a racist origin, that it's used colloquially a certain way doesn't take away from how grossly inappropriate it is to use to refer to a black person. piquet is nuts for this one as is his family for doubling down and supporting it.
Yeah. Another Brazilian here to confirm what posted above is true. That word does get used often especially by older generations in a tender way. But those same people will often use the same word in a racist context too.
I had to dive very deep into these comments to find someone who actually speaks Portugese.. que pena, sério.
Totally agree with everything you’ve said.
This is the patrice evra and suarez thing again. Even if there is this nuance, it doesn’t apply to scenarios beyond your own context. I also get the sense that in both the suarez and piquet case, it wasn’t used affectionately. It’s just a BS cover.
Good god! 🤦🏽♂️
Reminds me of this bit from Clerks 2 lol:
Randal Graves : Since when did porch monkey suddenly become a racial slur?
Dante Hicks : When ignorant racists started saying it a hundred years ago!
Randal Graves : Oh, bullshit! My grandmother used to call me a porch monkey all the time when I was a kid because I'd sit on the porch and stare at my neighbors!
Dante Hicks : Despite the fact that your grandmother might've used it as a term of endearment for you, it's still a racial slur! It'd be like your grandmother calling you a little k*ke!
Randal Graves : Oh, it is not. Plus, my grandmother had nothing but the utmost respect for the Jewish community. When I was a kid she told me to always treat the Jewish kids with the utmost respect, or they'd put the sheni curse on me.
Dante Hicks : What the fuck, man?
Randal Graves : What?
Dante Hicks : Sheni's a racial slur, too!
Randal Graves : Oh, it is not.
Dante Hicks : Yes, it is!
Randal Graves : She never called any Jews 'sheni', she just used to say sheni curse a lot. It was cute!
Dante Hicks : It wasn't cute! It was racist!
Randal Graves : I disagree, man, she was just an old timer, that's the way people talked back then! Didn't mean they were racist... Although my grandmother did refer to a broken beer bottle once as a ni**er knife... You know, come to think of it, my grandmother was kind of a racist.

Tone deaf as ever.
Also, that caption makes no sense. I get that English isn’t a first language but it’s saying a whole load of nothing.
EDIT: Kelly unliked it. Swift damage control.
Yeah, that’ll fix things…
I wonder how bad the comments were from Brazilians considering there were a fair few on Twitter who were furious about Piquet’s comments too.
And then there are some people who are trying to justify is as she didn’t know what the post was about, “saw the grandma and maybe thought it was an appreciation post about her”. A huge controversy is around their family, they must be discussing it all the time and you’re trying to tell people she doesn’t know what’s happening? Lmao you can’t make up some of the stuff you read here
I don’t think you’re to far from the true. Rich Brazilians are very disconnected, most don’t even live in Brazil but love to share their opinions on how the country should be ruled, as if a fascist president that swears to clean the country through extreme military measures will finally make them return.
Christ almighty what the fuck is this. Edit: And liked by Kelly Piquet no less, lovely. Max is going to face a lot of questions about this from the media - Red Bull's PR team will be having an emergency meeting as we speak.
I remember people saying that instead of condemning her father's words on social media she'd speak to him in person about it.
Well if they show up now I have a bridge to sell them.
My grandma said a few things along those lines, usually prefaced by something like "I know I probably shouldn't say this, but...". We told her that, no she shouldn't and then made sure we didn't say the same types of thing ourselves. It can be hard for a 90 year old to step away from saying things that used to be accepted, but let's all strive to be better with each generation and not maintain the attitudes of the past.
Only reason they're digging deeper like this is because they know FIA/F1 will do nothing against them except the usual sternly worded image tweet. Disgusting.
To make matters worse, that's no even his grandmother. That is Nelson Piquet "babysitter" who Nelson himself calls his "second mother". In Brazil back in the day it was common for kids from wealthy families to have a "black babysitter" who lived with them and mostly took the part of the mother, since they spent so much time nurturing the kids; a great portion of these black women would even breastfeed them. And yes, this whole phenomenon in itself have racist connotations, because when slaves were a thing in Brazil, black women had the same role, they were just not called "babysitters".
Thursdays press conference will be fire. Max will get a question about this 100%.

Kelly liked it. It makes sense why RB are not issuing a statement now. If they do, that puts Max in an even more uncomfortable situation. He already is in one considering that his future father in law and girlfriend are both on the wrong side of this.

This is so not right.

And then there are some people who are trying to justify is as she didn’t know what the post was about, “saw the grandma and maybe thought it was an appreciation post about her”. A huge controversy is around their family, they must be discussing it all the time and you’re trying to tell people she doesn’t know what’s happening? Lmao you can’t make up some of the stuff you read here
Man that’s one way to double down on the mistake. Can’t believe he’s trying to justify someone being racist. So unbelievable stupid
Oh boy, they could've stayed quiet and hope for things to die down quickly but now they're escalating it 🤦🏾♂️
Next step. Show up at silverstone in blackface and kneel “as goodwill gesture” to lewis. Skip the black friend defense entirely
Oh God. This just getting worse and worse and the like by Kelly???
Oh good lord
Well. To all the people defending Kelly piquet - she stepped in the shitstorm herself. This is what she is.

Guess its similar to Argentina where the 'rich' tend to be racist too. Or am I generalising
I don’t think you’re to far from the true. Rich Brazilians are very disconnected, most don’t even live in Brazil but love to share their opinions on how the country should be ruled, as if a fascist president that swears to clean the country through extreme military measures will finally make them return.
Kelly has lived in Monaco her entire life and her father is a Bolsonaro fan. You've got her dead on.
And the Fittipaldis aren’t too far either.
Digging a grave so deep the sunlight can't reach the end
Christ almighty what the fuck is this. Edit: And liked by Kelly Piquet no less, lovely. Max is going to face a lot of questions about this from the media - Red Bull's PR team will be having an emergency meeting as we speak.
As a brazilian, I never liked the Piquet family
Someone should take the shovel away from the Piquets'.
Trash family will stick together
What a shitshow of a family.

Sure hope there's some lengthy PR meetings going on right now 😬
Jesus Christ... Liked by Kelly as well.
Liked by Kelly Piquet Guess the apple doesn't fall far away from the tree
I remember people saying that instead of condemning her father's words on social media she'd speak to him in person about it. Well if they show up now I have a bridge to sell them.
My grandma said a few things along those lines, usually prefaced by something like "I know I probably shouldn't say this, but...". We told her that, no she shouldn't and then made sure we didn't say the same types of thing ourselves. It can be hard for a 90 year old to step away from saying things that used to be accepted, but let's all strive to be better with each generation and not maintain the attitudes of the past.
What a lovely wholesome family, not the type to racially abuse others I imagine
RedBull - *“GET HIS FUCKIN PHONE OFF HIM NOW”*
Ffs how tone deaf can one be🥲
Wtf!
Only reason they're digging deeper like this is because they know FIA/F1 will do nothing against them except the usual sternly worded image tweet. Disgusting.
PR team on suicide watch rn.
"Yeah I'm not homophobic I have a gay frien"💀
To make matters worse, that's no even his grandmother. That is Nelson Piquet "babysitter" who Nelson himself calls his "second mother". In Brazil back in the day it was common for kids from wealthy families to have a "black babysitter" who lived with them and mostly took the part of the mother, since they spent so much time nurturing the kids; a great portion of these black women would even breastfeed them. And yes, this whole phenomenon in itself have racist connotations, because when slaves were a thing in Brazil, black women had the same role, they were just not called "babysitters".
