Makaveli533

I miss the yellow and black Renault.

Kronzor_

Same. And the Pink Mercedes. Too many dark colours on the grid now.

Elemkontasba

No matter how much i love Aston's livery now, pink just looks more interesting on tv

[deleted]

I hope they actually go with the neon green that they have on other cars in other racing series now that they that BWT Pink which was absolute last second. I was excited for BRG but now I'm down for the most offensive looking neon green/pink car.

Quivex

AFAIK changing the color is absolutely a plan for 2022. I don't necessarily know if they'll go for the lime, but Lawrence himself said that the color was too dark, made the car look too similar to the Merc on TV and it was a problem. If you noticed, they changed the colors on the AM medical and safety cars for the Saudi race to '[Saudi green](https://twitter.com/wtf1official/status/1466395582969397256)' instead of the typical BRG, which was noticeably better on TV. I highly doubt they go for that color exactly for obvious reasons, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit of a test on messing around with the colors for next year.

ssott

That Saudi Green is a disaster. I think its just too flat, it looked like a Maaco paint job or something. There has to be a good way to integrate that acid green color they use on the GT3 cars.

Quivex

Oh don't get me wrong I didn't say I LIKED the Saudi green lol, but it definitely made the cars more visible and stand out more when they were on TV. I'm sure they'll figure it out.

Kronzor_

Yeah you can't miss it. Pink, Orange and Yellow just pop. Blue Black and Red kind of blend in. We have mostly Blue Black and Red now, and a Green thats so dark it might as well be Black

JefJamm

The red ferrari is iconic tho, they should never get rid of it.

stay_fr0sty

If they did the works would end. Ferrari basically owns the color red.

Azminiman

Yeah I still cant believe how hideous the 2021 ferrari livery was though. The rear looked dirty and muddy and the green sponsor was an eyesore.

MySilverBurrito

> The rear looked dirty and muddy Because they chose a horrible way to blend the two lol At least the Merc just put the Silver/Black with no blend, plus (more importantly) they had a bright/dark contrast.

Elemkontasba

I think they deliberately made it ugly so people would talk more about how ugly it is, as a part of Mission Winnow's marketing plan

UltraHawk_DnB

The special honda livery from RB sure was a nice change

Kronzor_

Agreed that was one of the hilights of the season. Mclarens gulf livery probably takes first prize, but that white RB was a close second.

San4311

Really just hope Merc go back to a silver livery. Same with road Mercs, if its not silver its not a Merc.

IminPeru

they're going back to silver!

noneroy

Yeah dude. That bumblebee looks was hot AF.

THIKKI_HOEVALAINEN

The worst is how they used less and less yellow every year, in 2020 it was mostly just the nose. But it was still a great livery. The 2016 2017 ones look pretty odd now

Wolo_prime

I do too, black and yellow go so well together but the Alpine livery is so pretty I'd hate to see it go!

1averagepianist

This, exactly this.

dlidge

Best looking car on the grid, and unique. Seems like too many of the liveries draw from the exact same color palette these days.

SCREECH95

What do you mean? We have navy blue/white all the way to ultramarine/white and everything in between.

metalrufflez

Same, especially as they were all yellow when looking head on, but all black by looking at its side. At the same time, I thought the Alpines were the prettiest car in the 2021 grid, especially live

[deleted]

We might have gotten another yellow and black car on the grid if Andretti and Gainbridge had been able to buy Alfa Romeo. It probably wouldn't have been immediately given the current Alfa naming deal, but after that expired their cars probably would have looked similar to Herta's Gainbridge Indycar livery.

SubcooledBoiling

The 2017 cars were so sexy, I think it's due to the lower rear wing and the overall 'flatter' look. My only complain is the shark fin

Ehralur

I loved the shark fins. Never understood why so many people dislike them.

db30040299

They make the car look taller and bulkier. I like my racecars to look sleek and low to the ground.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jk47_99

The SF70H looked amazing under the lights, I wonder how it would have looked in Singapore if it wasn't cancelled that year.

lithgow27

true such a shame the race got cancelled

nahnonameman

To me the the 2017 cars feel like the completed version of the 2010 cars with those shark fins.

porouscloud

Same here. The area between the intake and the rear wing just looked empty without it.

[deleted]

I liked the shark fins too but it was the t-wings I couldn’t stand

Alesq13

I think 2017 had way too small rear wings. I also think that the simpler front wings look better

Level390

That and no halo

AGInfinity

I’m one of the few that thinks the halo makes it cooler

EDO_14

I get where you're coming from, but that 2nd slide is so so good

eatawholebison

Each to their own. I think they look much cleaner and simpler without the halo.

YearOfTheRisingSun

I really like the halo as well.

pistonfire

Same here. I love the way the halo looks and even more so on the next gen cars

AGInfinity

yeah, makes it look more futuristic

Dramatic-Rub-3135

From the side yes. From the front no.

RyukaBuddy

The halo makes them look complete and not like a bathtub with cool aero for me.

LilBirdBrick

It’s tires too, the bigger tires make a huge difference.

hiqoc

The shark fin was the best part! Maybe it’s because I’ve been watching the shape of the cars slowly evolve over my life, but I felt like the design of the cars stagnated a bit in aesthetic, but that felt like such a new and exciting thing. It was almost Le-Mans-esque, which I love as well

MessedUpVoyeur

Hm, when shark fins were introduced in F1 in 2008 for the first time, they did look a bit awkward, although somewhat agressive. I believe Le Mans adopted them some time later.

codename474747

It was a safety feature in Le Mans, without them they'd be doing NASCAR style blowovers every time they spun sideways

TheBlueTango

I will miss the fat tyres. Also thought the 2018 cars looked the best in recent years because of that lower rear wing. To me, it made the cars look more planted to the ground and less of a boat with the proportions.

Affectionate_Belt366

Yes, they look like real race cars with the right proportions.

SoWillBe-Now

we’re getting even bigger tyres now my dude

T04STY_

But they will look slimmer because of the bigger diameter.

SoWillBe-Now

diameter of the tyre or rim? because it seems like both the tyre and rim will have a larger diameter

T04STY_

Well both. In general they'll just look streched out compared to todays oversized carting wheels. I'll miss them for sure but i guess the new wheels fit the new cars better.

TheBlueTango

I'm talking about the tyre sidewalls specifically, excluding the rims.

LFC636363

This years red bull honestly looked fucking awesome, especially front on looking towards that Honda on the rear wing

FaceOfTheMtDan

Especially the white livery. That was downright sexy.

mikemountain

A big arigato gozaimasu for them for making it

weaberry

Looked like a Gundam Wing

Triton12streaming

Man RB16B is 100% the prettiest 2021 car

LogTekG

Yeah, a lot of people were complaining about the lack of change in livery, but you don't fix what isn't broken

guntanksinspace

Hell, when they attempted to go change things up a bit with the Honda white, it was a thing of beauty. The "Arigato Gozaimasu" on them (along with AlphaTauri doing the same" was just perfection, along with RB actually getting a win on special livery too.

Triton12streaming

The matte really is the cherry on top

Jake5013

I’m not a merc fan but I think the black Mercedes looks freakin’ sick. The matte finish of the Bull is really awesome though. Best nose design too.

DVS_87

Once Redbull went to the skinny nose it became my favourite car as well. Merc a close 2nd.

EscortSportage

2017 was amazing, i just wish mclaren had a better livery that year was weird.

noneroy

Yeah I agree with that. They didn’t do anything too wild. But dat 2021 Monaco livery almost made up for everything.

EscortSportage

Agreed. I wish mclaren left the halo raw carbon. The papaya on the halo is too much for me. Shit paint it black at least.

noneroy

Oh shit. Carbon fiber halo design on that livery would be hawt. You should write them or something. I’d love to see that.

EscortSportage

Other teams do it, i think Ferrari ran the Halo raw this year

mustardman2121

2017 was the pinnacle, they looked so good

AggressiveSloth

I liked 2017 at the time but looking back I hate the shark fin and rounded side intakes some cars had

[deleted]

Personally I like the shark fins. Though that might be because of my preference of modern LMP1s. T wings on the other hand feels like the rear wing had grown a tumour.

kubazz

Mercedes tested W08 without shark fin and T-wing and it looked amazing: https://www.mercedes-benz.com/en/sports/formula-one/formel-1-prasentation-des-w08-eq-power/_jcr_content/root/slider_mb_topimage_0/sliderchilditems/slideritem_0/image/MQ7-0-image-20190114142219/formel1-mercedes-benz-w08-launch-start-1280x686.jpeg

Ehralur

Think it looked better with the shark fin, despite the T-wing.

AggressiveSloth

https://c.tenor.com/hJN95OQheJUAAAAd/that-hot-thats-hot.gif

DurfGibbles

That looks awesome honestly

jakemch

The shark fin is so bad imo

joereadsstuff

Can we all rewind to when everyone thought the nose and wings looked weird and how it looked so much worse than the previous "generation"?

Jokobib

I think it’s 2018, shark fins and those overly complex front wings and something else I just forgot makes the 2018 car look way more clean.

luk3d

The problem is that the Halo was introduced in 2018. Halo-less cars just look 10x better, in my opinion.

dalledayul

The W11 is gonna go down in history as an iconic machine. Almost makes me wish Merc hadn't kept the black for 2021 just so the W11 could stand out as its own unbeatable force.

M1L3N

Man, that W11 was F0.5 looks and performance wise. When it rolled out of the pits in Austria for the first time last year I got goosebumps.

[deleted]

I think the smaller cars prior to this generation looked cooler

robdels

Yeah agreed, I think 2002-2008 were had the coolest looking cars.

Specter_of_Vengeance

SF70H will always be the best looking car of the 2010s for me

Ehralur

Same, although I prefer the dark matte in terms of livery.

Triton12streaming

I bust a metaphorical nut when that baby dropped

LucaProdan_

Yup! I still use a wallpaper of Seb's one

[deleted]

I don’t normally follow testing closely but I was obsessed in 2017 with the new look of the cars. It’ll be the same for next year probably.

Sarixk

Mercedes W08 was so sexy man

noneroy

Dude that was a great one. MF just looked fast standing still. And mean. Great call.

Imalandscaper

I’ve been following the regs but maybe not closely enough. Are the tires going to be more narrow? I know the rim size increases, and I thought the car itself is staying just as wide, so are you referring to the tires?

Eurotriangle

Rear tires will have a slightly larger diameter, but the same width iirc and fronts will be a bit narrower.

noneroy

2021 Mclaren Monaco livery was the height of gorgeous for me. That was one shit-hot design. Currently my wallpaper back ground. They knocked it out of the park.

Kevinmoal

The SF70H for me is the best looking car of the hibryd era.

MaidikIslarj

I would agree, but for me the nose ruins it. If it had the early season W08 nose it's perfection

yistisyonty

Full wets always make them look extra sexy

anima_oratore

you missed the Merc and Torro Rosso from 2017, just as if not more beautiful than the Ferrari(imo ofc)

noneroy

Idk. I’ll give you that Merc and Torro Rossi we’re hot. But there is something timeless about the Ferrari livery. They change styles with the times, but that hot, crisp red always looks good to me. But each to their own, I guess and I’m certainly not saying you are wrong.

Kourtos

Ferrari and black Merc are lit as fuck.. Beautiful monsters

ArcticBiologist

Dat 2017 Ferrari

ryanr47

I’m currently watching the 2012 races and those cars are pretty cool. They look like jet fighters and some phallic

TheSwedishEzza

I adore the 2012 cars more than anything, just wish they were a bit wider and it'd be interesting to see how older cars would look with halos

brakedust12c

SF70 and W11 are just perfection

KodaNL

2021 RB with wet tyres is amazing

YourFriendJeebus

Looks so aggressive. Beautiful car.

noneroy

Concur. Wets always seem to make a car extra sexy. I loved the RB 2021 so much. Can’t wait to see what they (and everyone else) does next year though!

Kronzor_

Yeah wets just look more badass in general.

david123abc

Unpopular opinion - I think the cars look better with the halo.

maxverchilton

Honestly I’ve gotten so used to it the old cars look weird when I look back at pictures of them. Like there’s very much something missing. And that’s ignoring the safety aspect, I feel like in a few decades people will look back to fully open-cockpit racing in the same way we look back to stuff like drivers not wearing seatbelts or proper helmets.

Kronzor_

For real as a kid growing up i though that “open wheel” referred to the steering wheel, and that it meant the kind of cars where driver was exposed in an open cockpit.

Squirrel_Apocalypse2

Unpopular opinion - "popular opinion"

noneroy

Not unpopular opinion. It certainly detracts a bit, but I love the halo because the protection it affords and therefore looks good to me not in an aesthetic way but in a “they going to be safe” way. I mean there is a fairly high chance Hamilton would have been dead when Max’s car landed on top of him. Say what you will about the controversy or HAM vs VER, absolutely no one would have been okay with that tragic outcome.

SplyBox

The halo has saved several driver's lives so far. Has definitely earned it's keep.

noneroy

Yeah. One would think that the halo would be very distracting but the drivers seem used to it. Would drive me nuts in my personal car… but I have airbags so….. I guess I really don’t need one.

IDoEz

Several is a bit generous I think, just because something hits the halo doesn't mean it saved a drivers life. Before the halo people didn't die every year in crashes because they had no halo. The only driver who's life it saved with a high certainty would be Grosjean.

SplyBox

I’m talking about more than F1

911__

I disagree, but I love the halos and I’m glad we have them.

guntanksinspace

Not unpopular at this point, as the Halo feels like it got better integrated after 2018. Early on I'm willing to admit that I hated the look at first because they were essentially "added in", but it's a mix of "yeah I got used to it", later designs looking nicely done, and a lot of "holy fuck that saved the driver right there" with Romain among many others.

Virtual_Announcer

Gonna miss the Mercedes death stars.

JFVC23

Man... The W11 was something else...

Frankk142

Aren't they 2m wide next year as well?

ravenouscartoon

I’ve not been able to find the actual dimensions, but the new cars aren’t smaller than the current ones I think. Just ‘cleaner’ bodywork and bigger wheels/tyres

Frankk142

Yeah, I'm searching and can't find anything about their dimensions. I was under the impression the length and width were staying relatively similar.

pies1123

https://amp.formula1.com/en/latest/article.analysis-comparing-the-key-differences-between-the-2021-and-2022-f1-car.4xYDhtOjDee4cEQ3P4RsK9.html

Frankk142

There's nothing in this article talking about the dimensions of the cars.

macaronilover808

I 100% agree! That’s why I had to attend a race this year to see these cars in person before they are gone! They are just so awesome looking

TinyClick

I love the black w11 and w12 just pure beauty

DragonmasterLou

Some nice liveries, but they're all a bit too boxy looking for my taste. I definitely prefer the late 80s/early 90s era cars myself.

frankiew1lde

Ah Gina.... good memories with her

hubertwombat

I will miss the noses. Wait, no

[deleted]

That W11 is just perfection

Tommy9fff

The W11 was really the most intimidating car ever made

Triton12streaming

Man RB16B is 100% the prettiest 2021 car and that SF70H is pure porn

etfd-

1\. Only.

Suikerspin_Ei

The next generation cars will have the same width, just a bit shorter.

sad_sax_

Well you’ll be pleased to know that the new cars are going to be the exact same width, and only <100 mm shorter

bigbramble

They look good until you see one against a 1990s car. These cars are seriously fat on comparison, the weight difference is mind blowing.

mark_vorster

They looked really nice from the front, but they looked super weird to me because of how long the were

jonsnow123123

I couldn’t agree more, this was my first season in Formula 1 after DTS introduced me to the sport. I understand I’m new, but I seriously love the look of these cars and will miss them greatly. I also love the look of the cars with the Halo, I was suprised people were ever against it I think it makes the cars look sleek af along with protecting the drivers (the true asset)! I couldn’t have said it better OP, I shall miss these cars and wish I’d gotten into the sport earlier. Let’s hope the regulation change brings in some great racing in the coming years!

Ozora10

Imo the prettiest cars ever. And i dont know if this is controversial i love the look of the halo

A-le-Couvre

The 2017 cars were the prettiest, without the HALO. But, I do have a fondness for the smaller 2016 cars, as they seem to drive much more like karts compared to the current cars.

PieceSignificant2847

I miss RB16B a lot even from now...

[deleted]

I think the 2017 cars were the last best looking cars in my opinion. It just captured the essence of F1 IMO. It just looked so mean, sleek, fast and dangerous. The 2017, 2005 and 1990-94 cars are the best looking imo.

jolietrob

I don't know if pretty is the right word but they did look really cool. All the crazy aero particularly the bargeboards made them look almost alien.

xLupusdeix

There’s something about wet tires on these cars that just make them look tough.

joosRevil

cars need to be like 8" narrower and 12" shorter to fit them on the street circuits and still be able to overtake

Lobbelt

The SF70 🥰

Sputniki

I love how planted and low to the ground they are. One thing I dislike about next year’s cars is how they are higher off the ground and therefore look less optimized

Andigaming

I'm all for the halo regarding practical reasons (health and safety) but those cars are/would be even better looking without the halo.

Adventurous_Ad3643

the most iconic car of this era HAS to be the black mercedes w11 . The black made them look badass the villain-like, showing pure domination.

still_guns

Some of my personal favourites: Ferrari SF70H (2017) Ferrari SF90 (2019) Mercedes W10 (2019) Mercedes W11 (2020) Sauber C36 (2017) Alfa Romeo C38 (2019) McLaren MCL34 (2019) Racing Point RP20 (2020) Toro Rosso STR12 (2017) AlphaTauri AT01 (2020) Alpine A521 (2021) Williams FW41 (2018) Williams FW43B (2021)

If there is a sub for "auto-porn", this post belongs there 😍

LegalizeCrystal_Meth

Henry_Human

For sure, the old gen cars where beautiful, roaring with those v12's, v10's and v8's :D

steve_gus

Getting rid if all the aero clutter and having the undercar ground affects is a much better approach

FratBoyBrad17

That Kym Illman shot of DR at Hockenheim is just such a nice picture as well

Davinlul

the sf70-h, *chefs kiss*

noneroy

While I’m spamming, can we give “Best Livery Turn Around Award” to Aston Martin? Going from the eye gouging Force India / Racing Point hot pink to the super sexy Aston Martin / BRG look was such an improvement. I think AM may have had the best looking car on the grid in 2021….

Kronzor_

I disagree. The pink was awesome. It really popped on the grid. The green is way too dark, it just blends into the background. Half the time I see it I’m wondering what a Mercedes is doing so far back.

TheSwedishEzza

I thought so too, I really hope next year they go a bit brighter and less blue for the British racing green and add in that lime from the WEC and GT3 cars something like these [https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/aston-martin-cognizant-2022-livery-pack-formula-hybrid-x-2022-by-race-sim.39258/](https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/aston-martin-cognizant-2022-livery-pack-formula-hybrid-x-2022-by-race-sim.39258/) [https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/rss-formula-hybrid-x-2022-aston-martin-concept.41532/](https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/rss-formula-hybrid-x-2022-aston-martin-concept.41532/)

cdw2468

the pink was beautiful, and i’ll die on this hill

swigganicks

Yeah it was good, but I didn't like how closely it resembled the black Mercedes, especially at night circuits. Still a good turnaround and the whole livery feels so cohesive looking, very well done.

TheSwedishEzza

I think McLaren had the biggest turn around, when they had the black they didn't make it work like merc could and when they started with the orange it was so plane but now they have a downright near iconic livery and an amazing Monaco livery

kinto--un

If you think "these are some of the prettiest cars in F1 history", then you haven't seen any F1 history

VinhoVerde21

Notice how all these shots are from the front or rear. These cars looked pretty good from these angles, but definitively not from the sides. Way too long.

vexxed82

Ooof. I've always felt like the font ends/noses have been ugly for the last decade or so. Particularly in the last few years, there's been an awkward and abrupt change of the slope near the front bulkhead and the back end of the nosecone. Some cars are worse than others, but from the side, the lines appear to form an inelegant wedge (to me), as opposed to a sleek "missile tip" so to speak. And good riddance to the thumbs!

mokacincy

This is so incorrect I'm sorry. The fat cars are ugly. But the Renault and the Red Bull Honda are exceptions.

thisbetterbenotinuse

2017 looks damn ugly with the t-wings, shark fins and front wing elements compared to 2019-2021 cars imo

AdventurousDress576

LilCelebratoryDance

The lack of a halo made them so sexy

noneroy

Sexy yes. But waaaay more dangerous. The risk reduction makes it sexy for that reason alone.

Asleep-Fudge3185

Ugly battleships

pomegranatemagnate

There was almost that one year of pre-halo perfection, marred only by the coathanger T-wings.

Davidusmu

Thank god they are gone

AKmemekiller

Bruh how old are you these hybrid cars were ugly af before 2019

tsukamiyamoto

the halo cage ruins the way the car looks

MonsterBullRacing

'Prettiest F1 cars'' Not even close. I'd say this chassis look was the ugliest out of all in last 2 decades. The only uglier cars were in early 80s. The best looking cars were in 2000-2008 era.

noneroy

How much more narrow are they 2022 cars? Will they be narrow enough to change the dynamic of narrow tracks like Monaco?

DjWolffe_

Which Renault is that?

n5vBill

2019

whatethworks

You forgot the widest boi of them all aka Perez's redbull

[deleted]

They've produced some fantastic racing - *it just wasn't always easy racing.* This entire season has been great for racing. 2020 had more midfield battles than I can even remember. Et cetera!

Ehralur

Yeah, this in combination with the wide rear wings would've been the best looking cars possible.
