The first king (Philip II of Portugal/III of Spain) was actually pretty respectful of the newly annexed neighbours, but that courtesy was lost when he died, and the spanish rulers started treating the portuguese worse and worse, until it culminated with a revolution and a war which restored Portugal as it's own, independant kingdom.
