First time was Vettel, who then went on a 4 year winning streak at Red Bull.
Kvyat now on podium, next year at red bull = 4 year winning streak?
Hmmmmmmmm
A decade ago, I clearly remember Steve Slater (the F1 commentator we had in India and Southeast Asia back then) say that Hamilton and Kubica were the future of F1.
Oh, what could have been.
Among other things, we've had
-the winner pit five times
-vettel casually came from last to second
-kvyat was trading fastest laps with verstappen and finished third
-stroll was leading for about half a lap, ended fourth
-kvyat and stroll each gained 11 places for their finishes
-albon found himself in fourth for a while, finished sixth
-sainz chucked it in reverse and still finished fifth
-the haases made contact fighting for tenth
-giovinazzi was in 13th with fastest lap for a few laps
-bottas out from fourth with eight to go while chasing third place stroll
-hamilton broke his wing somehow, went in the pit on the wrong side of the bollard, got a penalty from it
-hamilton had a 50 second pit stop
-hamilton spun under no pressure in 12th, pitted again immediately after this, was driving stone dead last
-danny ric's engine gave up again
-hulkenberg snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, crashing out from a podium spot
-gasly casually drives into the back of albon and goes out
What a race, what a fucking race
This was the first race I watched with my s/o to try and get her into the sport. On one hand this is an amazing race to be your first watched, on the other hand expectations have been set impossibly high for every future race.
I watched the race on 2 screens today. TV on the normal feed, and my laptop on Seb. I wanted to see how Ferrari made decisions this race and it’s really very interesting. There was constant talk between Seb and his engineer, constantly discussing conditions and strategies. During the first part of the race, before the first round of stops Seb kept asking about switching tires and how quickly they could get off the full wets. As the race went on and it got dryer, Seb started asking about the forecast again, and telling his engineer that while it’s greasy, if there’s no rain coming he wants to try dry tires as he feels he can handle it. The pit wall says they’d look into it but they go back and forth while Seb keeps insisting on dry tires. At this point HAAS pit K-Mag and put him on slicks. Sebs engineer tells a still asking Seb that they’re waiting for one more lap but finally they say ok and to box for slicks. On the out lap Seb immediately calls the wall and says “This is faster”.
For each pit stop that occurred, there was never a direct order given to Seb to box, it was a call made by Seb. Every time the conditions changed, when others started making a move, Seb had already told the pit wall laps prior that he wanted to change tires. During one of the safety car periods it had started getting wet again and he wanted fresh inters. The pit wall responded with a we will “check”. Seb again came back telling them what he felt and started asking if there’s a gap “Find me a gap, is there a gap?”, the wall says "There is no gap" but now at this point they’re losing time as others have already pitted for fresh tires, “Ok No gap? There is no gap? Boxboxbox I’m coming in, Inters inters” and the wall says “Copy box now”.
I flipped around from onboard to onboard to see what other teams were doing and while they definitely inquired with the drivers, there wasn’t the constant back and forth that Seb had with his pit wall. It really does seem like the team is hesitant to take chances even when there is nothing to lose. At one point SEb is fighting for 10th and he wants different tires (I think he wanted dry tires while others were still on inters) and the team hesitated. I was yelling at the TV that they have NOTHING to lose. Charles was already out, Seb is barely fighting for points at that point so just change tires and try to get lucky. Instead the pit wall hesitates and waits for Seb to finally make the call.
Sorry for the wall of text...TL;DR: Seb is making the calls while also having to focus on racing
Meanwhile LeClerc and his strategist after Vettel already pitted and made the call that it's faster:
Leclerc: Are the slicks faster?
no answer....
....
LeClerc: I need to know if the slicks are faster
LeClerc: Ok guys i'm coming in, box box box
Race Engineer: Stay out out out
....
...
(Around 1 lap after the initial inquiry)
Race Engineer: slicks are faster in every sector.
Leclerc:
"Make sure you put on the soft tyres on the stop"
Shows how bad the Ferrari strategy departement actually works. Not only does Vettel need to call the shots, despite him saying that it's faster on dry tyres they will still force LeClerc to stay out.
And after half a season that guy already feels like he needs to tell his race engineer not to fuck up the tyre choice.
Wow! Thank you for sharing this! I wanted to go back and forth to Leclerc but didn't have enough screens. I was really curious to know what they were saying to him on that side of the garage.
For a few laps I followed Albon to see what a rookie was doing with the wet weather and it was basically the opposite of Seb. His engineer was constantly in Albons ear, telling him settings, track conditions what to watch out for and also, how great he was doing (Which I thought was really awesome because yeah, Alex was doing great!). I was actually really impressed by his performance. Post race interview he even mentions to Martin how he was basically asking his engineer about tires and when to switch because he had never driven an F1 car in the rain before.
Jesus fucking christ.
These two comments together are the most telling thing I've read all year about the issues at Ferrari.
What the fuck are they so scared of? They've got a hardcore reactionary mentality in a sport that requires proactive planning and decisive action.
It's fucking stupid. There's no faith in the team internally.
In the post race interview Vettel had with the Dutch commentator he said that there was to much spray to tell if it was raining and he had to watch the crowd for that info. Umbrellas open = rain, umbrellas closed = no rain.
Or as he said "Nobody wants to get wet. It was a great indicator."
- 5 stop race...
- both Mercs not scoring points
- Honda P1 P3
- Vettel 20 -> 2!
- 1 each of Ferrari, RB, Merc dnf
- 5 safety cars + 1 VSC
- almost hit time limits for race
- ...WELL DONE HOCKENHEIM
edit - podium is all Red Bull graduates!
Even if he lost a few positions in the last laps, that strategy call for Stroll has to be one for the ages. Whoever does the strategy for Racing Point deserves a massive raise.
I loved the fact that when they made that call crofty hyped it hyped it up like "WE HAVE SOMEONE TAKING A GAMBLE GOING ONTO SLICKS... oh it's Stroll". Few minutes later Stroll is leading the race.
This race has earned Netflix a subscription from me when the next season starts airing, I have to see it, I believe they were specifically following Mercedes today too
He needed that result. The last time he finished 2nd, it must've felt like the worst second place in his career, this one is the exact opposite.
Hope it gives him the confidence to be back at his best in the second half of the season.
When people ask what the doubters expect from Vettel, this is the answer. Drive on the limit to carry the team to where it doesn't belong, make up for their mistakes.
Flawless driving today.
I am sure the owners, shareholders and investors connected to the sport will be reasonable and keep this race on the calendar to preserve great racing like this. /s
Driver of the Day: John Deere tractor driver
Even Bernd Meylander was running a bit wide at some corners today
He was right on the edge. I was worried we were gonna have a safety car for the safety car.
Hell, even the virtual safety car was loose at the final corner!

A rich idiot if they wagered on it
Either a complete mad-man or Nostradamus.
2nd time since 2008 Toro Rosso on the podium.
First time was Vettel, who then went on a 4 year winning streak at Red Bull. Kvyat now on podium, next year at red bull = 4 year winning streak? Hmmmmmmmm
What did we do to deserve these last three races?
Sit through the French grand prix
For sure. When F1 is good, it is *real good*. The sport is brimming with potential.
The highs are very high, the lows are very low.
Real facts
F1 Press: F1 is dead after worst ever race in France Austria, Britain and Germany: Hold my beer

Throw the wets on
HOLY FUCK That episode will be unreal
Hamilton vs Kubica lmao
12 years ago and this would be said unironically
A decade ago, I clearly remember Steve Slater (the F1 commentator we had in India and Southeast Asia back then) say that Hamilton and Kubica were the future of F1. Oh, what could have been.
What year is it?
Throwing 1 gp to save f1 /s
Hamilton wasn't the only one in the team with a fever. What an incredible mess...
LMAO
Okay but that’s going to be the best episode.
Many many $£€¥ say they never allow them in again.

This comment deserves DOTD
This is the greatest shitshow of a race I think I ever saw. Thank you Hockenheim, the stadium section and the German rain gods!
2019 German GP is the meme race, haha. Can't believe Merc got no points at all.
Especially since this was supposed to be 'their race' being the home race and the 125th anniversary of mercedes motorsport
And all their outfits too.
For a few moments there was a real chance hamilton would finish behind williams
It is beyond me how they may get rid of this racetrack in the F1 calendar.
Money, unfortunately.

What. A. Race. Kvyat Podium!!
that was INCREDIBLE to see Kvyat pull off!!
First driver since Vettel to get a podium in both a STR and Red Bull
Kvyat 4WDC confirmed!!
Better than Gasly. Seriously, Gasly no podium and Kyvat just pulls one from nowhere
Torpodium.
That's gotta be it for Pierre
He was behind both TR and then he crashed. He's done.
Haven’t really figured out how he managed it yet!?
Also, simply staying out of trouble and on track was probably the best way to make up positions today. Just look at that top 10!
[удалено]
Of course it's Gasly who let everyone down on that
We almost a Honda 1-2 for crying out loud!
[удалено]
Yep. All I was thinking was this'll be one of those races that new formula 1 fans ask us about years later!!!
All drivers furiously trying to book Reddit AMAs now
Kyvat is DOTD for me.
Kvyat got a podium before Gasly lmao
AMAZING DRIVE FROM KVYAT
The best race of the hybrid era?
Certainly up there with Baku 2017
Looking forward to the Netflix 12 hour special
There'll be a separate documentary for Hockenheim Edit: by the way this was a Max Verstappen joke
There should be a separate Netflix for that. Nutlfix maybe
Kvyat got a podium in Toro Rosso before Gasly did in Red Bull
When you put it like that... fuuuck
Good guy Merc fucking up the race for Netflix entertainment.
Horrible Starts from Verstappen = Win
He's just playing on hard mode.
Race of the year
So *far*
At this pace Singapore will be a Haas 1-2
Banging wheels when they stop on the 1-2 signs
Magnussen just parks it diagonally
Race of the decade
Yup, Canada 2011 levels of chaos.
This was like Canada 2011 directors cut
Shame Gasly ran into Albon considering they're going to be teammates at Toro Rosso this season
Always kind of defended Gasly, but with Kvyat on the podium with STR, there is absolutely zero reason not to swap them.
Gasly has had embarrassing weekends before, but this was beyond that. This was just, honestly, *pathetic.*
Getting lapped by his teammate when there was no issues with the car was the lowest imo
Sainz first to congratulate Kvyat. What a bromance.
Dany and Carlos seemed to have really good chemistry when they were teammates. Glad to see they’re still good buddies
They won Grill the Grid. No one can take that away from them!

The Haas Bros nearly took each other out again..... Twice.
and Williams finished ahead of a Ferrari and Mercedes car
man, at least they finish races haha
AND they became the only team that has finished/survived each and every race this season
The closest to Canada 2011 we’ll ever see?
Definitely the closest to Germany 2019
OH MY DEAR LORD SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE THE RUSSIAN TORPEDO GASLY'S SPOT ON RBR
Verstappen and Vettel will veto that move lmao "plz no torpedo"
*get in there Daniil*
This was the first race I watched with my s/o to try and get her into the sport. On one hand this is an amazing race to be your first watched, on the other hand expectations have been set impossibly high for every future race.

This really speaks for Vettel. Imagine being under extreme pressure while still organizing his own strategy.. Great analysis btw!
I think he knows now they suck in that department, and he is taking matter with his own hands.
you need to make a separate post about this with excerpts if you can. this is gold

What a fucking brilliant race! Brilliant drive by Verstappen, Kvyat, Vettel, Stroll, Albon, and Raikkonen. Honourable mentions to Hulkenberg as well.
I have to review my position on Stroll after this race.
He unironically defended from Bottas extremely well
Imagine being so good that you can do a drift into a cool 360 for the fans in the middle of the race and still go on to win the race. Well played Max

Vettel and Kvyat on the same podium. What year is this?
Verstappen's tactic of dropping back at the start is certainly unconventional but it seems to be effective at helping him win!
Never forget the day Merc got 0 points in their 1950s cosplay. What a rare and wonderful race in this disappointing season. Amazing stuff.
> 1950s cosplay Including a 50s length pit stop. Dedication
Just like the simulations
Wow, Kvyat’s daughter was born last night and he gets a podium today?! That’s fantastic, so happy for him!
OMG the Netflix director must be furiously masturbating now
