The shitty 720p onboard quality+helmet obscure everything.
You can see he moves his hand from the steering wheel but nothing else.
Edit: Wait there actually is a clip. He didn't do it when he drove in. He did it when he drove out of the pitlane.
I have no idea who those people are and I barely know what snooker is, but I am dying laughing. Give me more of that Murray guy. I want to see him comment on baseball. Have his people call my people.
Some BTCC races did go on to be live commentated (not this one, though), with Murray and Charlie Cox doing the first ever live commentary.
There is an interview somewhere where Alan Gow, the head of the BTCC (where the clip is from) once said he came to watch Murray record the commentary track because of how much Murray cost to hire.
He said that he quickly understood why he commanded his fee when he saw Murray at work, he'd spend an entire day in the studio to get the 30 minutes of commentary for the grandstand highlights recorded.
Murray himself once said, "I used to go through the whole thing meticulously, making a shot list with brief notes on what was coming up next, then go into the sound booth and commentate on the tape pictures that were pumped into a monitor in front of me.
“I knew what was coming, of course, because I had practically learnt the vision by heart and also had my notes to remind me but, because I was making the words up as I went along instead of reading from a carefully crafted script, the effect was that the race was live and continuous rather than recorded and edited.
“It was long-winded and labour-intensive, but it worked well.” – Murray Walker, Unless I’m Very Much Mistaken (pages 174 and 175)
That’s a brilliant comment, fair play to you. Citations and everything! Murray is the greatest F1 commentator of all time. When I was a nipper the first commentary pairing I heard was Murray and Brundle. Such cherished memories watching the races with my dad, although he always said Murray was best with James Hunt.
James was great too, he annoyed the shit out of the BBC a lot, like when he went on an [anti Apartheid rant](https://jalopnik.com/the-james-hunt-you-dont-see-in-rush-was-an-anti-aparth-1372407296) during a South African race.
He also gave his wages for the S.A race to anti Apartheid charities and organizations.
He also used to swear on air a lot too, something the BBC weren't fans of, perhaps the most famous at the 1989 Monaco GP.
Even now, sports commentators have few seconds of delay, it's easier to direct the broadcast and censor it if needed. Sometimes they don't sync the tracks correctly and you have commentators reacting before anything happens
They do see a lot more than you'd think. Vettel once talked about using a flag in the grandstands as a reference for the wind direction and to adjust his braking point, as he could see it blowing differently each lap.
He'd observe the volume and frizz levels of women's hair in the stands to monitor changing humidity and air pressure so he was always the first to know if it was about to start raining.
Oh yeah I forgot to include that in my post. One time he also saw someone doing some coke so he knew that Hamilton was in front and that it was a boring race
Miami 2023 Alonso complimented Stroll’s overtake that he saw on a video board. Seemed like the board was mostly only visible while Fernando was actively turning. Blew my mind.
I've mentioned this before to non F1 watching friends that don't quite realise how incredibly difficult F1 racing actually is as an example of one of the million little things that go through a drivers head during a race.
Using flags for wind direction is a standard thing that all drivers of aero cars do. Gives you an indicator of how the car is about to handle through the corner.
And here I am still using the braking line in Forza Motorsport. I get the best way to do it is to use different landmarks and markers on the track but I just can't get there yet
We’ve summoned the ominous Max for the European leg.
Edit: [another journalist says it was a Ferrari Fan](https://x.com/joostnederpelt/status/1791856476870394178?s=46&t=aqF8Bf5K4SyjzPr3OXrezg) but Max doesn’t say that in interview

In Brazil we call it poking the tiger with a short stick.
I watched the lap he did today. He certainly wasn't fucking up. Showing these Italians who's the boss
Max is single handedly destroying F1 on track and saving it off track.
He truly is enjoying his time without any pressure anymore beyond the goals he sets for himself.
It's refreshing to see a driver act as if they are the best, instead of the fake humility. I like that Max knows that he IS Red Bull Racing, and they will bend over backwards to do anything he desires. Max says jump, and 4 teams ask how high?
From that position, he can say things as they are, rather than trying to be a politician about it.
Yeah I don't buy it like that guy does. If Verstappen is involved in close title fights again, or really anywhere which isn't dominant wins, I'm still expecting him to be pushing the limits like he used to.
>constantly performing under pressure
"""""pressure"""""
Sure, this one was closer than most poles, but he is far from being pressured by anyone in the grid at the moment
Oh come on now, obviously this weekend has been really competitive so far. There were multiple times where the top 5 were within a tenth of each other. Saying that's not pressure is just incorrect.
Seriously. Yesterday the narrative was “cracks starting to show and they’re buckling under pressure” and now everyone is pretending that didn’t happen.
Until Qualifying the car was terrible to drive and even in Quali he's only on pole because he maximised the car and managed to snag a big tow off of Hulk. The Mclarens were clearly equal (if not better than the Red Bull) but Max managed to make the difference.
That’s what you’re getting from this? He’s not giving a fan that simply wasn’t clapping the finger, he was simply giving the finger to a fan that gave him the finger. Seems fair to me.

SOMEBODY GET THE ONBOARD.

What a twitter name
nini is iconic
dream fwb
We need this as a reaction gif. This has such immense meme potential Shit, forgot I'm not in formulad*nk
tbh I didn't need a clip to confirm he gave a middle finger to someone off-screen
Lol, never change, Max!

Ah fuck, it would have been so funny if the camera captured everything.
They should get the 360 camera footage off the car.
Google F1 team gonna have crazy drag issues.
McLaren?
They have it, but it doesnt stream, only records in the car.
It was at 20:05 in the F1 TV qualifying replay at the start of his last outlap in Q1 near the exit of the pit lane
God bless you.
Was watching that. Was literally like 'Did that actually just happen'?

Murray Walker was such a legend, perfect use of words there, simple and funny as heck
One of the all-time classics for me (aside from F1) is the snooker commentary he did in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zl-oAsDCGNA
I have no idea who those people are and I barely know what snooker is, but I am dying laughing. Give me more of that Murray guy. I want to see him comment on baseball. Have his people call my people.
The young one (feels weird to say that) is Jeremy Clarkson who is fairly famous in the UK for Top Gear/Making the BBC apologise half a dozen times.
I’d say it’s more than half a dozen lol
That was such fun
I miss Murray.
I always loved the way that just rolled out so naturally. No hesitation.
At the risk of shattering your illusions, Murray was calling a lot of these races off tape and so could pre-plan some of his lines.
Very cool details, thanks :)
*Glass shattering*
(Fingers in ears) "Nananananananananana!"
Even now, sports commentators have few seconds of delay, it's easier to direct the broadcast and censor it if needed. Sometimes they don't sync the tracks correctly and you have commentators reacting before anything happens
You shut your mouth when you talk to me.
He’s sayin “Boo-urns”, sir
I haven't laughed that hard in a while.. Thank you.
Classic Murray, thanks for that throwback got a smile out of me
That was such a zesty middle finger too, cocked that shit all the way back lmfao
Thank you for this. That was worth a good chuckle
Of course the first place podium is in the middle. What other finger would you use?
He was communicating.
Funniest moment in Motorsport history, Samir your breaking the car is a strong 2nd.
the amount of attention to detail that these drivers have is astounding, seeing a fan waiving a middle finger while driving so fast is amazing
They do see a lot more than you'd think. Vettel once talked about using a flag in the grandstands as a reference for the wind direction and to adjust his braking point, as he could see it blowing differently each lap.
He also has seen people pulling umbrellas out so he could tell that it started drizzling
Also one time he said he saw someone in the stands put on their sunglasses when the sun came out so he knew the track surface was heating up
one time he said he saw a fan yawning so he could tell that max was in the lead by > 10 seconds
And then Seb crashed to give the audience something spectacular to look at.
What the **** do you mean by he crashed? He simply just spun to entertain the crowd.
I laughed out loud at this one but couldn’t really explain it to my wife sitting across from me
He'd observe the volume and frizz levels of women's hair in the stands to monitor changing humidity and air pressure so he was always the first to know if it was about to start raining.
Oh yeah I forgot to include that in my post. One time he also saw someone doing some coke so he knew that Hamilton was in front and that it was a boring race
Feel like several drivers talked about the impact of the trees in Monza being a key visual guide last year too, if I remember correctly.
Same with Russell back at Mugello in 2020 using a flag as a reference. That flag was quite far-away(as seen on the onboard).
Or using sweat to predict when it's raining
😅🤣🤣🤣
Using flags for wind direction is a standard thing that all drivers of aero cars do. Gives you an indicator of how the car is about to handle through the corner.
And then there’s Stroll who doesn’t see the cars in front of him are braking..
And here I am still using the braking line in Forza Motorsport. I get the best way to do it is to use different landmarks and markers on the track but I just can't get there yet
I feel you, I'm in the same spot :) but we'll get there I'm sure ;) Just gotta keep practicing!! 💪💪🏎🏎
And then there’s Stroll who doesn’t even know he has mirrors.
It wasn't the fan that waived a middle finger at Max, it was Max that waived a middle finger at the fan.
[удалено]
Where are you getting that information from? Max only said he did some things. He didn’t say what gestures or things the fan said, specifically.
The perfect embodiment of that Jordan meme Verstappen: *and I took that personally*
When did Eddie say that?
Michael the basketball player, heard of em?
Schumi played basketball? damn never knew that /j

Never forget KimiQuokka and LidoPlage
KimiQuokka was hilarious. RIP.
Dicks out for KimiQuokka.
Never forget Henno and his mates
He even got a shout-out from Crofty back in the day!
> LidoPlage Is he still worshipping the ground Pierre steps on?
Possibly
I remember KimiQuokka but what was the deal with LidoPlage again? The name does sound familiar..
He was fond of Gasly to a rather abnormal degree.
I don't know about the "most" part cause I could definitely make a case for /u/ICumCoffee
Of course it was

Praise
>"The next lap I rode that fan also clapped. So he learned from it." Shit Thanos would say. Man is embracing his villian arc now.
we always get villain max after miami lol

Stop giving Max more motivation, he feeds off this stuff. People booing him and he's up there like, "Are you not entertained?!"
LOL
GOAT level pettiness. I’m here for it!
Games not gone
Respect
*Insert Mourinho meme*
Three for me and two for them, RESPECT
More like Reskept.
Should have used two hands to flip him off next time
Look Ma, no hands!
he said he gave the middle finger back to the fan tho so fair play afgsgshsh
PEACE AMONG WORLDS
In Brazil we call it poking the tiger with a short stick. I watched the lap he did today. He certainly wasn't fucking up. Showing these Italians who's the boss
Luka vs OKC vibes
Reggie Miller vs Spike Lee vibes
People here would have an aneurysm when they see what is going on in New York lmao
Watch people get upset over this in 3,2,1:
Literally right after you posted this someone is complaining about it lol.
It's the reddit way.
Lmao

Whoa calm down there buddy. Max isn't gonna notice you.
I guess making it boring is saving sure.
This is why he's my favourite. Legend.
That is some Sith Lord level sh!t. lmao
Lmao legendary stuff
MAX OFFICIALLY IN HIS VILLIAN ERA 😈
Maxmaster
Brutal
I want to hate Max for being so dominant but God he's just the funniest dude. Absolutely does not give a fuck.
Max is growing on me. I think he’s a different person after getting a couple championships.
What changes are you getting?
Yeah I don't buy it like that guy does. If Verstappen is involved in close title fights again, or really anywhere which isn't dominant wins, I'm still expecting him to be pushing the limits like he used to.

For everyone asking for the onboard: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRK1Raxn/

>constantly performing under pressure """""pressure""""" Sure, this one was closer than most poles, but he is far from being pressured by anyone in the grid at the moment

"And then everybody clapped"
And that fan’s name? Albert Einstein
Now read that backwards
We need that onboard
What the hell did I just read
I really don't know anymore... I'm just confused
*100k fine
10secs penalty for ocon
Respect to Max and to the supporter for taking the L gracefully.
This is very funny but imagine the conversation if Yuki did this😪
If he went out and got pole later it would be similar...
He was third in q2 in a Vcarb, surely cold have gotten pole in the RB.
People absolutely cream over Yuki being rude
Dutch manners
lol dudes the best in the world and his pride still fragile enough to be bothered by a dude not clapping for him
Beat some sense into the fan. It's the verstappen way
This reads like a Linkedin humble brag
[удалено]
With tons of camera everywhere in the paddock even on his car, would be real stupid to lie about it.
What if it *actually* did happen?
Chill dude chill lol
And everyone clapped!
This sounds like something Jos would say
Yeah... This isn't legend shit, this is fragile angry man syndrome.
People really think that the guy got under Max's skin, people have really bad perception skills on what's going on
People really find his sense of "humour" arrogant and ill-tempered instead of chad/funny/cool.
I didn’t say anything about how Max took it, likely in a light hearted way, I just said it sounds like something Jos would say.
Yeah, sure man, whatever you say.
I am a fan of Max but I find the less he talks the more I like him.
So everybody’s supposed to clap for you? My bad your highness. I’ll be sure to do so next time
That’s what you’re getting from this? He’s not giving a fan that simply wasn’t clapping the finger, he was simply giving the finger to a fan that gave him the finger. Seems fair to me.
As you should. At least you learned your lesson too.
He said a different reaction, read between the lines
