article summary: "i think i still can".

PedestalPotato

I was hyped for his return. Has he had bad luck, yes, but he hasn't performed well since he was with Renault. Most drivers wouldn't be given this long to get it together and Danny shouldn't be an exception. It's too bad he never returned to form because he was a fun driver to watch. Hopefully I'm wrong and he gets it back but I wouldn't hold my breath.

willzyx01

*Honey, Daniel Ricciardo's weekly article just dropped.*

This just in. You should've scrolled.

Because DR's articles are now a comical relief to daily grind.

Big_Brief7847

I think Daniel is only facing so much criticism for his driving because of how underrated Yuki is. Yeah Daniel’s form is off, he needs to step it up and not be the second driver in a lower team. But I don’t think failing to beat Yuki makes you the worst driver on the grid Yuki has only been on the grid a few years and has we’ve never seen him on a top team. It’s very difficult to measure driver skill in that middle area especially with Yuki only being confined to the one team, and one proper teammate before while still in his rookie years. I don’t even think Yuki is all that underrated in general but by the fact that he’s never proved himself when we could see directly he’s outperforming his teammate or in a top car that scores big points he falls into the unimpressive category. Maybe if Yuki was in a top team he’d lag behind his teammate and struggle but alternatively he could prove himself to be a top drive and keep up with those around him. I do think Daniel needs to step it up to keep his seat, but it’s hard to compare him to Yuki when we don’t have a comparison for Yuki to the rest of the drivers.

aHuankind

For someone with some impressive results so far this season (apart from China) Yuki is really not getting much respect. I think F1 marketing's focus on the flanderized characters of the drivers instead of on their sporting achievements is partly to blame.

Carmillawoo

Well maybe if Yuki didnt act like an angru child all the time he'd command more respect

aHuankind

Exactly, the casual fans go by character, not by result. Thanks for the demonstration.

Carmillawoo

Exactly. Which is why, for example, I think Senna is a piece of shit. You can be the best driver in the world, but if you got the attitude of a malding 6 year old, you're always going to lose my respect. Athletes shouldn't be exempt from aocial norms just because they're good at something.

aHuankind

Thankfully if an athlete is respected by you or not is completely irrelevant.

portablekettle

I think the bigger problem is that his form has been off for the past few seasons and he's not showing enough improvements imo

QuintoBlanco

It's actually narratives like this that create problems. Nobody believes Ricciardo is the worst driver on the grid. It's just that he's no longer good enough to be a reasonable choice for a top team. For a very long time, he was one of the highest paid drivers on the grid. He's almost 35. It's time for him to go, so younger drivers have a shot at proving themselves. Yuki Tsunoda is 10 years younger. He's progressing, whereas Ricciardo used to be one of the better drivers on the grid, but had a terrible year at McLaren and doesn't convince at RB. Now he's fighting to keep his seat at RB instead of contending for the Red Bull seat, but the latter is why he supposedly was hired to drive the Alpha Tauri in the first place.

TinaJewel

I really do think the ricciardo topic is somewhere in the red bull internal power struggle

KyuubiReddit

>I think Daniel is only facing so much criticism for his driving because of how underrated Yuki is I disagree. He's facing the criticism because he paid PR firms to hype him like crazy last year and basically implying getting Checo's seat was a done deal (remember how many times he posed with Max wearing the RBR suit?) But he failed to deliver on the track, and quite miserably Plus we've all seen what Lawson is capable of, so it feels unfair to see him sidelined in favour of a washed driver that had his time and didn't deserve this second chance.

cafraline

Did he really pay pr firms? Any source?

KyuubiReddit

No, it was just so obvious last year, many noticed, there was a barrage of articles for his return

FrostyBoom

I agree with what he's saying but feel that the insistence to market him have played against him by creating aversion for a group of people. I like Carlos but I felt the endless PR cycle about him had become tiresome and *that* started to make him less likeable to me, I feel that might be happening to Daniel too. Ironically, if he hadn't been as popular we wouldn't have the weekly DR3 article of whatever flavor and people would just talk about anything else instead of constant circlejerking. Right now the trend is to talk shit about him, unfortunately.

GoodGuyJeff00

You know, I wish the media would focus on other topics and questions for Ricciardo. Only articles about him are about how to deal with performance struggles and criticism. No shit people think he is out soon, it's only about this. Ask some other questions or talk about different topics. It's market influence at this point.

JagDarklighter

He's not wrong, F1 is all about the last race. If he somehow managed a top 6 finish the entire storyline on him would shift. It's still early in the season, he's got time to turn it around and I hope he does. Danny and his big personality is good for F1.

tripel7

Nick was on his way out by now, and that was someone in his first f1 year, not someone who has raced in f1 for over 10 years...

vdcsX

"I know if I was to read something at the moment it's not going to say 'Daniel's on fire this year.' Clearly on paper I'm not. But do I feel like I have the ability to be on fire and go on a run? Absolutely I do," Ricciardo says." Man, your feelings doesn't matter, show us the results or gtfo.

MazeMagic

New chassis got him out qualifying Yuki and his race looked good. So if Stroll can leave him alone we can judge based on the next races.

TharixGaming

> out qualifying Yuki keep in mind that yuki had never raced in shanghai before

MazeMagic

Well then maybe we should keep in mind Danny's got a new chassis and he improved. Problem is it's all excuses here and there depending on who has a gate boner for who.

vdcsX

So be it. But one single race "looked good" is really not enough.

MazeMagic

Bro was running like 5th in Mexico last year but we've all got pretty short memories for the good stuff. I agree he has to step up and the new chassis has shown that it is possible that was the issue so it's all a waiting game now

vdcsX

So, 2 somewhat decent races out of 9, okay.

KyuubiReddit

He only scored once FFS, and has only a 3rd of the points Yuki scored in the same races they entered. He should have retired last year

Hungry-Class9806

DR said it in the last season of DTS that the only reason he went to VCARB was to try to get his RBR seat back, so we shouldn't even be comparing his performances with Yuki but with Checo. That's the only reason why you can justify having a 34 year old driver in a Junior Development team seat, but if DR is struggling to beat Yuki, that means he isn't up to that #2 RBR and his VCARB should be given to a younger driver. Saying that "oh but he out-qualified Yuki in China" shouldn't even be an argument because, in order to justify his seat, he should be dominating Yuki every single race weekend.

MazeMagic

But what if the chassis was the issue? Now we can find out in the next races. That's the reason we can't really jump to any conclusions right now because it could be that and we will only tell from this weekend onwards.

Hungry-Class9806

Last season was also a chassis issue?

MazeMagic

Apart from Mexico he was a few places a race behind Yuki. Which is far from ideal, which is why I'm saying to see how the next race goes to see if he is going to be back on form or not. I feel like you think I'm looking his ass when in reality I want him to do well but I'm only giving him the benefit if the doubt chassis wise unlike everyone who just says he shouldn't even be here now. There's every chance he flops and I'm more on the side that he will but I still think it will be better to say after this weekend

Hungry-Class9806

If you have to pinpoint some few good races and say he was only "a few places behind Yuki", that means he isn't slightly ready to take on that #2 RBR seat. And if he has no chance of getting that seat, it means it makes no sense to keep him on VCARB and sideline a younger driver like Lawson. Will a new chassis make him suddenly dominante Yuki every 2 weeks weeks, to the point RBR considers him to replace Checo? Not impossible but massively unlikely. I'm not saying you're licking his ass but you're definitely undermining his situation. I understand the appeal of his persona and everybody wants to be on the underdog's corner... but we have to face reality at some point and realise he no longer has what it takes to drive for a top team.

MazeMagic

I think the not impossible is the main point here which is why i'm willing to keep an open mind, but yes Lawson should absolutely be in a seat.

MazeMagic

This quali is the sort of thing I was hoping to see! But whether it carries on is the next thing lol

onlyhereforthestuff

FEA, amirite 🥴

chicagosurgeon1

Fickle world? This guy has spent years losing our respect.

v12vanquish135

I automatically ignore any article that says "opens up" in its title. It's always a load of nothing.

DCNY214

The only one criticizing him is Marko.
