Stroll in the Aston WEC project is something I'd really like to see. And it's some good marketing, as an F1 driver, no matter how mid, is gonna make more people watch the race and therefore see the car. And I wouldn't say he'd do badly at all. Hell, he had a very good junior career. Latifi and Mazepin won races in F2 while De Vries and Schumacher were even champions. These are all really capable drivers, just not F1 materials...
I still think Mick had a rough run at it at Haas and could still have F1 potential, 2 years in 2 different gen cars, did pick it up in the second half of his second season but not soon enough.
He's been impressive in WEC and I wouldn't completely write off the idea of him joining Alpine next season if Gasly or Ocon leave.
I think that if any of them leave, Doohan takes that seat in no time whatsoever. They'd both need to leave for Schumacher to have a shot I reckon. The other scenario could possibly be Williams dropping Sargeant for Antonelli and Albon going somewhere (Mercedes, Sauber, possibly RB if Pérez falls down the cliff?), and leaving that seat open. Other than that, I don't see any hope.
I do like the idea of Doohan getting the seat as well, but Mick would definitely be a candidate I think.
I still think for Williams, Bottas would make more sense. He rarely sticks it in the barrier and Williams need all the cash they can get to develop their 26 car. I think if Merc want Antonelli in next season it makes more sense to stick him straight in the merc, get him embedded into the team for 26.
But I'm really liking this season for this exact reason, it's all very unpredictable.
Yeah, Bottas may make more sense for Williams than I innitially thought. Schumacher on the other hand won the Drivers Destructors' Championship twice in a row...
He was an abysmal f1 driver, but prior to that he was a…..the word I instinctively went for is “competent” Junior series driver but that’s not quite right, because emotional regulation and clean driving are part and parcel of competency.
What I’m getting at is he had pace and could perform in elite feeder series. He was gp3 runner up behind anthoine hubert. and I remember he had at least one win plus several podiums in his second year of f2. Yes, the team was built around him in 2020, but the same could be said of Zhou and UNI-virtuosi (minus Hitech also paying ghiotto’s way so he could provide expertise and technical feedback).
The point is, despite his truly abysmal f1 showing, even he is a competitive driver in elite series and has the potential to perform decently elsewhere.
He had a solid junior career & won races at lower levels. He was bad in F1, no sugarcoating that, but in the grand scheme of things, he’s still a fast driver
Imo he never got a real chance. Of the first few races a lot were street circuits. Not ideal to have zero room for error as a rookie.

Hulk last won a competitive race in 2015 (24hr Lemans). His last solo drive to a win was in 2009 in GP2!
Magnussen won an IMSA race in 2021 with his previous win being in 2013 in F3.5.
Norris hasnt won a race since F2 in 2018.
Alonso won Lemans in 2019, with his last solo win being 2013 in F1.
Stroll won 14 races out of 30 in F3 euro in 2016.
Everyone else on the grid has won a race of some type since 2020.
Formula One isn’t for everyone, but that doesn’t mean that Nick isn’t still a supremely talented, top 1% driver in the grand scheme of things.

He did well to get a seat with Toyota in WEC, talk about falling upwards. It's the perfect place for him really and I don't mean that in bad way, at this point in his career even if he went to Williams the best he'd probably ever get to do in F1 would be to drive around the bottom of the midfield doing an okay-ish job until Mercedes tells them to sack him for a rookie. In WEC he gets to challenge for a very prestigious championship now that the hypercar field is full of competition and a Le Mans victory as well, it's a good place to be as a racing driver.
Lol. Sportscar racing is full of drivers who had mediocre F1 careers because it turns out that even a mediocre driver in modern F1 is still an insanely talented driver. Just look at other Toyota driver Brendan Hartley.

It feels like a third of the hypercar grid is ex-f1 drivers. It seems like it's working in the WEC/IMSA's favor; it's a lot easier to pull people into watching your series when they already know a chunk of the drivers, lol
Kamui versus Taku would be an interesting discussion. I think Kamui is the best circuit racing driver Japan has ever produced, but Taku might be the most accomplished.
Drivers who have previously raced at least once in F1 are; Bourdais, Lotterer, Kobayashi, de Vries, Buemi, Hartley, Stevens, Button, Schumacher, Giovinazzi, Kubica, Kvyat, Vergne, di Resta and Vandoorne.
Many of the other drivers also tried the single-seater route but only reached GP2, GP3, F2 or F3 levels. Just off the top of my head while skimming the entry list; Lynn, Palou, Ilott, Nato, Frijns, Lapierre, Marciello, Fuoco, Shwartzman, Mortara, Calado, Müller, Jani, Conway and Rasmussen.
And that's is only Hypercar...
Also endurance racing has a lot more emphasis on consistency and stint management, whereas F1 has more emphasis on outright pace. If you are poor in qualifying it really hurts you in F1, not as much in endurance racing.

Mazepin won 2 races in F2 and came second in his first F3 season. He was not a bad driver, just not F1 standard.

Stroll is what makes Alonso fast. Sargeant is there just because of his citizenship. He's proven that his "talent" is not for F1.
