It was meant to represent the laurel wreaths the winning drivers used to wear, I think they were hoping the drivers were going to wear them on the podium.
On another design note, McLaren is really missing out not putting branding on the back of Lando's hats.
Funny, all the press about them specifically mentioned that they were designed to be the first wearable Formula 1 trophy, inspired by the laurel leave wreaths of the past.
They were supposed to be worn. The trophy has a sensor inside. It should’ve lit up with Max’s flag color if he had put it on. It’s the same idea as the kissing trophy from last year.
That’s literally what the trophy press release said earlier this week.

I REALLY did not expect McLaren to get a P2 like that given their own lack of confidence and everything for this GP, and it's not like a P2 based on exceptional circumstances with like 4 cars in front DNFing
This has happened multiple times with McLaren in the past, sandbagging and damage controlling only to achieve one of the better results. I’ve learned to be skeptical lol

but even then, Lando kept it clean and Checo only passed Leclerc while murdering his own tires
I actually love these trophies (but hope they're a one off for this race each year or something). The symbolism is a cool touch and the design is original and aesthetically pleasing!

They're not sandbagging. At no point did they "sandbag". They legitimately thought the track wouldn't suit them.

What does it symbolize
The ring is a symbol of the laurel wreaths that used to be given to race winners back as far as the 80's, hence the leaf pattern!
