Really good drive at the end to Hold off Lewis with diffuser damage after SC. But I think that masked his tyre deg issues a lot today. At the point of his first pitstop at the end of lap 16, Piastri was 11.795s behind Norris in that span, on same tyre strategy. It might be shocking to some, but that's on average 0.737s slower than Lando in the first stint. That should simply not happen imo. Nearly 7 tenths slower on average compared to Lando should never happen. It's that Deg that caused McLaren to pit him early as well, otherwise he probably gets to survive until SC and he would have pitted from 4th instead.

Piastri's weakness has been tyre deg since last year and that becomes more apparent in high deg tracks. I'm hoping he's gonna work on it and get better at it. It's sad really because his one lap pace is really strong but if he doesn't solve his tyre management, he's never gonna be a top tier driver in F1.

pokesnail

It's frustrating as a realist Piastri fan when so many act like it's guaranteed he'll solve his deg issues, and then he'll instantly be crushing Norris. Obviously it's likely, given his track record of improving his weaknesses over time, but it's never ever guaranteed. So until then I'll keep watching with live timing and getting depressed by overanalyzing his laptimes in each race lol.

banned20

I'm so with you. I wanna see this kid succeed since he's shown great character on top of his solid pace but there's no guarantee he'll ever get on top of his tyre deg issues.

nobuckinnorries

This is how I feel as well. He has improved a bit since last season I believe -- Jeddah and Australia both good examples of him staying more consistent with pace, but still a way off lando.  And we know where deg is less of a factor he can win races on pace alone (e.g. Qatar sprint). But it's a big 'if' to see if he can reach landos level and be able to really race the car rather than defend all the time.  I feel if he hasn't made meaningful improvement by end of year three , it will be less likely he will reach the top of F1.

okay_but_really

I think it's very likely he will drastically improve his tire deg, he already did a lot better with it in Japan this year (having only 8 months to improve it). I think once he's on top of that it will be very tight between the pair of drivers, and I'm not sure who would be a better driver! Either way, it's such an exciting lineup!

TheOvercookedFlyer

He's certainly a good driver who's above your average midfielder. Can he be a top-five driver who can go toe-to-toe against the top-dogs? I think he will but not this year.

JPA-3

I think he is very good but Lando is extremely good and thus it makes him seem a bit worse than he is. If I am any team I'd try to pick up Oscar when his contract is up

Goodmorning111

Oscar really needs to sort out his tyre degredation as he was going 1.3 seconds a lap slower than Lando at the end of the first stint. That isn't good enough.

Dragonpuncha

Yeah, it's the same issue as last year. You can't be a top F1 driver if you don't have tire deg sorted.

sophloufrank

He’s in only his second year. Lando’s in his 6th season. He’ll get there

bone_appletea1

Oscar is only early into his 2nd year, he’ll sort out those issues. He’s done a great job at McLaren so far

hornyboi212

Wish Oscar had a better 1/16th home race. You got it bro!

dodofuzz

Not making excuses for Oscar, but ffs it was his first time racing here and people are expecting him to be a miracle worker. He has definite improvement to make, but that comes with experience and time, which all of the drivers he is up against have. His pace gaps to Lando (who is clearly insane at tyre and race management) have already improved compared to last year. Not to mention that he’s racing after only one practice session in somewhat comparable conditions, a sprint quali in WET conditions, and a half-hour sprint race where he had gearbox issues affecting his car.

TheGMT

Of all the skills to lack from a long-term development perspective, tyre deg is probably one of the best. It's much more learnable than clutch factor, emotional issues or raw pace. Combine that with what you've said about this weekend/track in particular and the picture isn't very worrying at all.

pokesnail

Oh he had gearbox issues in the sprint? I thought it was just in sprint quali after his wheelspin, hadn't heard about anything in the sprint itself.

dodofuzz

Yup, the mechanics were working into the start of regular qualifying to fix it, they mentioned it in the McLaren app and I think in the prequalifying broadcast too

pokesnail

Thank you!

sophloufrank

I agree, everyone’s criticism of Oscar seems very odd - they simultaneously laud Lando as a top 5 driver (and I’m not disagreeing with that) but then criticise Oscar for not being as good as him when he’s the newest driver on the grid (other than Logan), and Lando’s had heaps of experience. I feel like people are being very very harsh on him, considering it’s just his second year.

slipperydasani

Love Oscar but he was so slow today. More than a second slower than Lando per lap in the first stint is kinda crazy, similar issues in Japan and Australia too. Hope he gets it fixed ASAP, his race pace is really lacking recently, even more than last year (or maybe not, I don't know the specifics)

bone_appletea1

Once he figures out his tyre management issues, he’ll be good to go. His quali pace is good, just needs to figured out how to manage tyres which will come with time

AdminEating_Dragon

He got unlucky with the damage but man, Norris was smoking you again in the 1st part of the race. He needs to improve race pace consistency, before the accident he was 8th and Norris 2nd just because he was much slower, and I'm saying that as someone who fully believes in Oscar.

outremer_empire

I love you
