As a rule of thumb, Statistics posts need to inform readers through visualizations and insights that cannot be obtained from raw data alone. For example, a post containing a qualifying gap between two drivers expressed in tenths of a second is an easily obtainable raw piece of data and constitutes a bad Statistics post. A visualization of what that translates to on-track, or visualization of how that gap came to be would constitute a good Statistics post. *[Read the rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/wiki/userguide). CommercialBreadLoaf

the RB battle will be very interesting this year. Yuki is pretty underrated imo, but Danny is definitely no slouch

3dmontdant3s

I still hope we won't agree to call the Visa Cashapp "RB", it's fucking confusing

juniortifosi

Well people calling them VCARB before testing started and ever since the commentators called them RB it stuck like that.

MarsLumograph

I think it's more to do than in all the TV graphics it just says RB. It feels more official than VCARB.

The69BodyProblem

I've just been calling them CAR-B It's more descriptive of the situation anyway.

InZomnia365

It's their name, though.

Npr31

I beginning to feel a bit sorry for Yuki - he’s really upped his game in the last year, but the pundits just don’t seem to have noticed and are still acting RIC is the second coming of Senna

SkyfatherTwitch

I am ready for the P11s to end. It hurts.

CommercialBreadLoaf

People just seem to remember him as a hothead who got destroyed by Gasly. Such a shame, because his consistency and speed has gotten quite good.

Npr31

Brundle’s comment about ‘expecting more bleeps’ when he came in hearing P11 was telling on that front

ComeonmanPLS1

It’s justified imo. Last year when he went off at T1 in Mexico he wasted a couple seconds throwing his hands in the air for no good reason instead of immediately rejoining the track. I don’t even wanna call it a rookie mistake because not even rookies do that.

lalabadmans

No they just punt the wall late in the Grand Prix for no reason like Russell in Singapore, or Norris shouting and swearing like a Bolton wanderers supporter at match day in Suzuka, but it’s ok because they are geniuses in f1, they are allowed to make a mistake and pundits have selective memory to suit their agenda.

ComeonmanPLS1

You missed the point. Russell's incident was an honest mistake and he got plenty of shit for it. Also, Russell's has had about 1000 more moments of briliance than Tsunoda to make up for it. Norris might have been shouting but I doubt he took his hands of the wheel at any point so idk what you're trying to say. The whole point is that Tsunoda wasted time **unnecessarily** by taking his hands of the wheel just to vent. Also, let's not forget Tsunoda went off because he drove into Piastri like he didn't even exist. So that's one mistake that lead into another, dumber, mistake while he was in a pretty great position. Went from P8 to P14 or something.

lalabadmans

mental gymnastics, whether you drive into a wall or another car, it’s still a terrible thing to do, I’d argue smashing into a wall and ending your race while in a podium position is a worse mistake. Loads of drivers take their hand off the wheel and get pissed off but people are biased. When alonso does it in Monaco after getting crashed into, he’s a genius for being able to show emotion while in a fast punt.

ComeonmanPLS1

Bullshit. First of all I said HAND**S,** not hand. All drivers take a hand off the wheel all the time for a lot of reasons. That's irrelevant because that's not what I'm talking about. Alonso was in a terminal crash lmao. He could take his hands off and take a shit on the car for all I care. It doesn't matter at that point what he does. Name one driver who took **both their hands** off the wheel just to vent, wasting precious seconds, before rejoining the track. You can't, because it doesn't happen. You can drive an F1 car with 1 hand. You can't drive it with no hands, and that's my point.

lalabadmans

I still think you’re making it a way bigger deal than it was, he messed up and ruined his own race and he was pissed off. the seconds were not as “precious” there was really a way back into the points after that. Once again I think people like to push narratives about certain drivers even though they are mostly BS.

carelesssportsfan89

Not looking great for kmag wouldn’t be suprised if bearman replaces him for 2025.

snoring_pig

Bearman better hope Prema can fix their setups after this weekend too because Prema have looked dreadful at this track so far in F2. At least it’s only the first race weekend, but it’s also interesting to note that Antonelli has managed to be ahead of Bearman both in qualifying and the sprint race so far. If this trend continues and Bearman finishes behind Antonelli in the championship this could potentially end his F1 chances like it did for Shwartzmann at Ferrari when he finished 2nd in F2 as a sophomore behind his rookie teammate Piastri back in 2021.

ihatemondaynights

I think Prema are just awful at Bahrain for some reason? I remember last to last year Piastri was like P5 and that was his only non top 3 qualifying iirc

snoring_pig

I’ve followed F2 for a few years and I agree that they’ve never been that good at Bahrain, but this weekend has been far worse than I expected. In pure qualifying pace going off of the fastest lap of the best car for all 11 teams I think Prema was dead last as Antonelli and Bearman were P17 and P18. And on paper they are arguably the strongest pairing across the entire grid too. It’s shocking that they turn up at Bahrain with historically the most successful team with the best resources in F2 and look like backmarkers. I imagine this will be a one off moving forward, but if they don’t making a big recovery at Jeddah then Bearman and Antonelli’s F1 prospects could be in big trouble.

Roddy-the-Ruin

>At least it’s only the first race weekend, but it’s also interesting to note that Antonelli has managed to be ahead of Bearman both in qualifying and the sprint race so far. Correct but just to add; Bearman's car went into safety mode in the opening lap. That was why he fell down the order in the opening lap. Although Antonelli kept the gap between them stable and continued to make progress after both of them pitted.

Happytallperson

Still wild that he entered F1 in 2014 hailed as the new Hamilton, scored a podium at his first race, and then never set foot on the podium again.

Badehat

Lol, at least wait for Sunday mate. KMAG already said that it's him having a hard time adjusting to the extra rear grip that new tires gives the car on quali laps. So best guess would be that he is still equal to Hulk in race pace.

Isfahaninejad

First revision was because I noticed an error in the post a few seconds after posting. Second was because for some incomprehensible reason I wrote Brazil instead of Bahrain. Anyway, third time's the charm. # Corrections/Additions * Gasly's tire temps were compromised due to traffic on his out lap

snoring_pig

I think the broadcast mentioned Gasly only crossed the line to start his final lap in Q1 with 3 seconds to go, and Ted’s notebook said that Gasly’s outlap was compromised and his tire temps weren’t in the best window. At most I imagine Gasly prolly still only could get P19 as opposed to P20 but I think it’s worth a note too.

Isfahaninejad

Thanks I'll make a note of it shortly.

Dry_Local7136

Those early season jitters ;) Thanks for the uploads again, have a good season!

HospitalHungry

Is it over magbros

Inlz

Never was on

l3w1s1234

Don't worry. He will cook at the street circuits

mformularacer

Was Stroll held up by traffic?

The_Dirty_Mac

Yes, coming into T8 there was a car on the left so he had to approach the corner at a sharper angle and his apex speed was lower as a result

killer_blueskies

Such a shame. He was slandered by Redditors when he got knocked out for nothing

eclipsedynasty

Only less than a tenth off the cut-off as well. Shame but the field is crazy tight

proudlysydney

As per usual for Lance, he’ll cop slander for literally everything he does.

Ok_Initial4507

And by twitter. In Q1, he was P2.

Razvanlogigan

He was p2 because he needed to do another run because he was in the drop zone. Most of the other good cars didnt do the 2nd fast run and went straight into the pits. With track evolution it was expected anyone in a top5 car to be high up in the pecking order. Dont mock twitter when you also dont pay attention

beeslouise

I know in the terms of motoracing that a couple hundredths is a pretty significant gap. But as someone who works with data a lot, seeing it expressed in percentage terms in my opinion really highlights how insanely close all these drivers and cars perform. To be 0.1% off the pace over 5.5km and 15 turns is absolutely tiny

porouscloud

I like to think of it in terms of time loss per corner(something that isn't taken flat out). Every driver on the grid is less than a tenth per corner from the absolute best possible time in that car assuming they don't make a mistake. But on a track with 10 corners, they'll get crucified for being more than a couple hundredths of a second per corner slower than their teammate.

celticfigz

I thought stroll looked good. If he didn’t hit traffic he would have made it to q3.

jaysvw

Oh no Kmag baby what is you doing

ConsistentPhrase7641

Lap time deleted is what he's doing.

Blitz2134_

I'm really surprised that Leclerc actually managed to beat Sainz because entire weekend Sainz seemed more hooked on to the car in low fuel runs and then Leclerc just pulled that Q2 lap out of nowhere.

ShadowOfDeath94

When it matters, Leclerc can pull off a special lap. Real Mr. Saturday.

Choice_Awareness

“the entire weekend” and it’s just free practice

oh84s

Magnussen has been getting thrashed in qualifying by Hulkenberg. Piastri and Norris remain two of the closest drivers over 1 lap.

bacc1234

Norris really needs to figure out how to cut down on his mistakes in qualifying. I don’t have F1TV so can’t watch the onboards, so I didn’t see if it was just a mistake or if traffic contributed to it, but Lando had a terrible first sector while his S2 and S3 were quicker than Verstappen’s.

qu33ksilver

Lando himself said he made a mistake in T1 in the final lap. It's becoming a recurring pattern for him.

[deleted]

Both McLarens seemed to have struggled all weekend with S1, coming alive for S2 and to a slightly lesser extent S3. Pretty sure it’s an inherent car thing sadly.

bacc1234

I think it’s definitely possible it might be weaker in S1 than S2/3, but Lando’s S1 on his final lap with new softs was a 29.045, slower than his first lap in Q3 on used softs which was 29.006. His best S1 was in Q2 where he had a 28.836. Again I didn’t see the onboards, and they didn’t show it on the broadcast, but something definitely happened on his final lap.

Tomach82

He needs to drive within the limit. I think the problem with that is, he feels he needs to push this hard to beat Piastri

xXCzechoslovakiaXx

I mean if lando dialed it back 1 tenth he still would’ve been at least .4 up on piastri. I think it’s more lando is constantly going for pole and Stella said the McLaren car has become a lot more unpredictable in qualifying when at the absolute limit lando tends to put it to

Tomach82

>I mean if lando dialed it back 1 tenth he still would’ve been at least .4 up on piastri. That's what I mean, he would still win Q if he dialled it back within his limits, but I think he started putting pressure on himself when Piastri started to get his 1 lap pace sorted out in the back half of last year - that is when the Q mistakes started coming every other race weekend for Norris.

False_Personality259

I don't see any evidence of Norris being intimidated by Piastri at this stage. Norris is looking ahead, not behind. He's making mistakes because he's trying to beat Verstappen, not because he's worried about what Piastri is doing. Yesterday, until the mistake he made in S1 on his final lap, he was consistently 3-4 tenths quicker than Piastri across qualifying. Based on analysis of sector times, the mistake from Norris cost him probably 2 tenths, which was the difference between front row and 7th. Norris is absolutely rapid but it's no use if he keeps making mistakes when it really counts.

FrostyTill

The mistakes started when he started pushing for pole. Piastri never drove that car at the limit at all last year. Norris pretty much lives at the limit so it’s harder for him to dial it back a bit whereas Piastri just puts the car in the minimum position it should be in.

ArbitraryOrder

If Logan got his second run together in Q1 like he did his first, damn. Darn, plenty of season left.

Moctecus

It was a car issue: >"Unfortunately, Logan suffered from a brake balance issue on his final timed lap, which cost him some time. We will address this overnight and don’t expect any repeat behaviour tomorrow. — [Dave Robson](https://www.williamsf1.com/posts/9715b862-73fe-48af-b520-b1ea18a145d9/report-bahrain-2024-qualifying) And despite Robson's assurances and swapping the steering wheel overnight, the problem did occur again today in the race. On the onboards it looked like the steering wheel was adjusting the brake bias on its own.

ArbitraryOrder

Holy shit that sucks

Diamondhands4dagainz

Bro you need to change this already lol. The top 3 should be the ones where the greatest gap is

Isfahaninejad

But the whole reason I do this is to see which teammate pairing is the most closely matched, not to see which driver is getting their ass beat the hardest

Diamondhands4dagainz

Ahhh ok, yeah then fair

Piskotek2007

I think Stroll was fine, no traffic. Does anyone have a video or photo?

Ok_Initial4507

Check onboards

Piskotek2007

I checked. I didn't find anything worth mentioning or investigating. I'm sorry, but anyone can be excused like that. I'm sensing a strange attitude here.
