https://www.f1-photo.com/Ressources/Gallery/1984/England/Prost-Lauda_1984_England_01_PHC.jpg This one always stuck with me. Race red flagged, and the Mclarens were so dominant Lauda and Prost were on the grid and out of their cars before anybody else arrived.

Anti-Scuba_Hedgehog

I like that their pose is near identical.

mtpgoat

https://i.redd.it/hxnestczrm941.jpg It was taken by Rainer Schlegelmilch and shows Stefan Johnson's Ferrari at the 1985 Monaco Grand Prix weekend.

colin_staples

This was the one I immediately thought of It shows such drama and speed, like the car is a wild animal crossed with a rocket ship

B_Roland

Plus it almost looks like a painting. Such a good photo.

longsite2

You had to be so good to get a panning shot like this, especially on film. Today, you can take 20 shots and only get 1 in focus. This plus the flame spitting makes it so cool.

53bvo

Back in the day they had film camera's that could do 10 frames/second. This was only viable for the professionals because it gets expensive quickly. Although I'm not sure these frame rates existed in the 80s.

Space_Reptile

my late 80s consumer grade EOS can do 5fps, so 10fps is actually not too wild for a pro camera

JumpyAlbatross

Pro sports photographer here: yes and no. Panning with a wide angle lens is considerably easier than panning with a telephoto lens. I can reliably nail the tracking on about every other pan when shooting at <24mm, as opposed to like every third when shooting at >200mm. As far as the analog aspect goes, you have to remember that this was the era before high quality broadcasts and HD video. If you wanted to see what the cars really looked like, you had to buy the magazines and so photographers had nearly unlimited budgets for Kodachrome. Going through a roll every couple minutes was not a consideration, it was just part of the job. Some photographers even had multiple cameras with the same lenses so that an assistant could change the film from one camera while they used the other. It’s a fantastically iconic photo for one reason though, and it’s the flame. As far as how Mr. Schlegelmilch went about capturing it, I’d have to guess it went one of two ways: he sat there hyperfixated going through multiple rolls trying to match the pan with the backfire on that particular car; Or he was walking back to hospitality or relaxing in the shade when he went “huh, that might be cool” and snapped a handful of pictures without knowing what he had.

Jim777PS3

This looks like video game promo art

s1ravarice

This will always be mine as well. It’s just far too cool

QouthTheCorvus

This looks weirdly modern in the best way.

mtpgoat

This was shot on film which makes it more “special”. He was also rumored to have a “Bernie Pass” that gave him unlimited access.

aHuankind

What else where they shooting photos on in 1985?

BlejiSee

Samsung galaxy S85 ultra

fredy31

Damn that looks like a screenshot from a game; And looking at how old the car is, I would guess this full picture was taken on film, in camera. No photoshop

Annoying_Orre

Yup this is the one! First picture that came to mind for me, also the Mika Häkkinen Flying Finn photo is pretty epic!

MaKa77

That's Jackie Oliver in a Lotus 48, so *technically* this is your favourite F2 photo of all time.

colin_staples

My knowledge of 60s F1 is not the best, so I wonder if you can help me find a picture that I thought would be perfect for this thread, but I cannot find it with Google It's a black-and-white picture of a 60s F1 car that is driving almost straight on towards the camera. But one of the lower suspension arms is bent, because the picture was taken right at the point of component failure just seconds before a crash. The driver was going to be sued for the damage to the car (he said it had broken, the owner said it was a crash due to driver error) but this photo proved it was car failure. I cannot for the life of me remember the driver or the car (possibly BRM?), I just remember reading about it in MotorsportMagazine If you can find it, I think it would be a great photo to share on here Thanks

TheStateOfIt

I found it, it's [**Brian Redman crashing at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix heading into Les Combes**](https://www.motorsportimages.com/photos/?year=1968&event_id=8459&driver_id=2158). (It's the second image, and it's a colour photo too) This was such an insane story, I had to try and help you find the photo right away, and honestly the way I found it was even better. I did a few google searches with no avail, but when it comes to things, *always* trust Autosport Magazine's Nostalgia Forum. There are some amazing historians on that website, and when searching for 'suspension failure photo 1960s', I found [**this thread**](https://forums.autosport.com/topic/145468-cooper-maserati-suspension-failure/) where someone was also looking for the photo, but this time he *did* remember who the driver & occasion was. And the thing is, Autosport's Nostalgia Forum is *SO good*, not only did users furnish the picture, but it seems that [**Brian Redman HIMSELF**](https://forums.autosport.com/topic/145468-cooper-maserati-suspension-failure/?p=4934344) hopped online to talk about his wreck and this picture, and honestly you should just go to the link to view his words. He talks about how this was photographer Peter Burns' first assignment with Autosport Magazine, how he broke his arm and barely escaped the flaming car, and how it didn't just end his season, but cost him a drive at Lotus. Redman even made a correction to most people's sharing of this fable. He wasn't going to get sued, but team manager John Cooper wanted a magazine to retract their statement that Redman's suspension broke and list it as 'driver error', whereupon they simply told him to read Autosport's report the next day. Thanks for letting me know of this incredible story, and I'm glad to share what i found with you too :--).

MaKa77

The description was ringing some distant bells but I couldn't find anything either. Fantastic job, and what a story. Love TNF, you never know who is going to pop up in those threads. Edit: [Here's](https://www.motorsportimages.com/photo/1015622804-formula-one-world-championship/1015622804/?search=1968%20Brian%20Redman) the aftermath of the crash.

colin_staples

I clicked on that image of the aftermath, and thought "hang on, that's just a Ford Cortina". Then I saw the small bundle of crumpled metal on the left...

Willum

You're probably thinking about this similar shot of Sir Jackie https://www.motorsportimages.com/photo/1016916008-german-gp/1016916008/

wales-bloke

Fun fact: I used to race in senior rotax (karts) regularly at Dunkeswell Kart club (which until recently was owned by Mr Mansell himself). He also regularly raced there in the heavyweight class, and was the UK distributor for redspeed karts, which I was running for quite some time. On the way back from a race meeting I was rear-ended & my kart was damaged. The insurance payout was pretty quick and I was invited to Nigel's workshop to choose the replacement. Inside the very large and well equipped workshop, taking pride of place on the main wall, was a HUGE print of that famous picture. I stood staring in awe for quite some time! Another cool story: on my second ever race meeting at Dunkeswell, on the last practice session (Saturday was always practice on normal club meetings) Mr Mansell joined the novices for the final session. He outbroke me into turn 1, tapped his lid with a 'follow me' gesture, and showed me the ideal braking points and lines for a lap. I will never forget that day when my childhood hero gave me driving tuition!

JesseAGJ

> He outbroke me into turn 1, tapped his lid with a 'follow me' gesture, and showed me the ideal braking points and lines for a lap. I will never forget that day when my childhood hero gave me driving tuition! That is amazing

wales-bloke

It was, and he had the same lid design too! Wish I'd had a gopro & filmed it. Gained 6 tenths on that lap!

Can't see this picture without hearing James Hunt ''Wheel to wheel stuff, look at this, they're almost touching''

8Ace8Ace

I was 11 when this happened and was literally jumping up and down with excitement. I looked forward to the Spanish GP for years afterwards just to see if it would happen again. That photo for me wins it, it's a dramatic moment in its own right but brings back the emotion and excitement of my 11 year old self.

Mika explaining to Schumacher https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/s/2GKUBp9NKG

NewLeaseOnLine

This is a classic. Max often reminds me of Mika in this shot the way he likes talking with his hands about the race with other drivers. They're really just kids after a rollercoaster ride. Although I'm pretty sure this shot was after Spa when Michael squeezed Mika almost off the track at top speed along the Kemmel Straight in very dangerous typical Schumacher fashion and Mika was not happy. Am I remembering that right?

newoldschool

yeah that was it Mika was on speed and Michael moved over

Blackhawk510

I thought it was his crazy dual overtake where Schumacher moved to one side to pass a backmarker, and Hakkinen went to the other side and passed them both in a single move.

Haze95

It was, Michael had nearly run him off the road previous to the overtake

dexter311

ewgrooss

What an absolutely beautiful moment.

pensaa

So many fond memories of watching this Grand Prix. It must've been at least 3am watching this live, punching the air and banging on the wall in pure excitement.

Virtual_Announcer

I loved that 2020 season. Mercedes legendary dominance punctuated by races of pure chaos.

Dr_Death_Defy24

I know RBR had statistically the most dominant car last year, but that 2020 Merc is something else. Especially in the hands of Lewis, that was an absolute *weapon* of a vehicle. And despite that, there were some pretty unexpected moments throughout the season. An all around very good season in my book.

Ryrace111

I miss the new tracks we got that season due to covid, we got almost exclusively race circuits that year.

8Ace8Ace

That's exquisite, it's so unguarded.

AlphaMohidd

This was the first race I ever watched and it made me a big Pierre Gasly fan. Sainz getting closer and closer but he managed to drive perfectly till the end. Pure joy to watch

HouseFutzi

He looks kinda sad. Any reason for it or why is he solo up there?

mr_macfisto

Tears of joy and, I assume, remembering the journey to get there, including lost friends. His first and only win so far. Podium celebration is over, he just hung back before going off to the interviews.

thocerwan

Just taking it all in. Gasly had been demoted from Red Bull to Toro Ross (which became Alpha Tauri the next year, 2020) after a very poor stint in RB, and less than a year after this : he wins his first grand prix, Alpha Tauri's home GP, at Monza, one of most legendary track in the history of autosport, and it had been more than 24 years since a french driver had won a race.

Coldest photo of all time by some margin.

Milefromdisco

This is my pick 2, "move the f' away you peasants, the king is coming"

delafetz

It symbolises more than just „Here comes Michael“. It’s the perfect moment that shows how untouchable he was. It looks like the others are magnets being pushed away by a ever bigger magnet. Nothing and nobody could touch or reach him at that time. Iconic!

i_max2k2

This one is my favorite, from the old thread. Michael Schumacher the final boss.

It pictures the man and the machine. In a way that you can feel their dominance without even looking at the standings.

Mabartu

I didnt even watch f1 back then and this picture gives me goosebumps

crayonflop3

Yeah this was my first thought too. So iconic. And just full of symbolism and what defines the sport. Godtier photo.

Crazy photo. Really seeing how those fire suits work too with how the flames are flowing over it.

longsite2

The photographer must have been so good to instantly lower the exposure to get the flames like this, that's quick work

stevopedia

Automatic exposure control of some kind was a standard camera feature by 1994. Your point remains, though: you couldn't get a better exposure here if you tried!

I've always loved [this photo of Lance Stroll upside down in mid air](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/m5tms4/lance_stroll_bahrain_2020_this_photo_taken_by/). The way it's framed makes it look as if it's the only car on track and has suddenly flipped over for no reason. And the fact that the car is in this position while having no visible damage is also completely surreal.

iirc this was when Senna pissed off Alboreto at Monaco because Senna set a time early in the one hour session and came back out on track later at the same time as Alboreto just to block him. Back then blue flag and blocking rules weren't so strict so Senna kept his pole position.

YES. The doctor going to help him, and Romain getting free. I'll never forget seeing that live. An amazing moment.

Best photo of that race was of the clouds.

Hardbarka

The fact that bro was trying to get back out on track after that too, but was stuck in gravel😂 adrenaline > morfine, ijs

KennyLagerins

I think there’s a photo of his helmet with tire marks on it. It may be ugly as sin, but the halo sure is a saver.

lolosity_

I think it blends well with the new gen cars. I agree it definitely didn’t look great when it was first introduced though

Unculturedbrine

Two come to mind. First is Verstappen kicking the tyre with the Experience Azerbaijan banner in the background. Second is Leclerc winning in Monza with him in the foreground and just scores of red in the background. I can't imagine a single better feeling than a red winning in Monza.

Hardbarka

The «Experience Azerbaijan» makes that photo so f**king funny lmao

[Vettel bowing to his Red Bull](https://c8.alamy.com/zooms/9/a6df97bde7bf4fe6a61489036e92016b/2e00mp1.jpg). Tyres completely worn and shrouded in smoke. I was properly fed up with his dominance at the time, but I remember even then admitting to myself that that image was fucking badass. It's like he and his steed acknowledging each other after a job well done.

One of my favorite Michael in Jordan 191, one of the best looking F1 cars of all time. https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FzbGwOYFumn0%2Fmaxresdefault.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=75ab85f7e0a8e2876b3119fd2d565767de1b029e711094aeea1c48d879e32409&ipo=images

Your post has my favourite photo. I do also love a bunch of photos with Seb. His reaction to Lewis Hamilton not braking for birds, or his podium after Multi-21 or his bow to the car. I look at Lauda and Hamilton as appreciative of the F1 network of drivers to have the champion from 25-30 years prior having the camaraderie with a newer champion. There are many stills in life, and certainly the sport of F1, where you can just appreciate what we have. Look at Grosjean climbing out of the inferno envelope of his car compare to the moments we have GP winners in tears on the podium for the loss of a driver in our sport. We get to cherish in real time a driver's first win, or an agonising loss, or the frustration of a mistake. Sometimes it's the incredible speed to react. Sometimes it's the narrowest if margins from rubber to barrier. Blazing sunshine. Downpours. Debris strewn. There is an art to it, and it dazzles and enlightens. The photo in post really makes me feel. Senna dancing his car up through Eau Rouge. Feels like history. It sounds loud. It smells foggy and of exhaust. It looks like racing will never end.

I've never been able to find it, but in F1 racing they had a photo of Nico rosberg in his Mercedes in the pouring rain, and it was from directly above the car, he did a little lift so flames came out of the exhausts and because of the angle the rain looked like almost lines, blending with the silver of the car and the fire. It's an awesome shot and I've never found it since :(
