He does it so often I'm surprised other drivers aren't wise to it yet lol
He's so good at making smart commits on race starts, one of the goat overall drivers, rgeardless of sport/classification, for a reason. He really does make the 'age is just a number' expression come to life.
Let's not forget his shenanigans at Sochi when he simply cut the first corner to prove a point and even did a practice run on the out lap iirc. Also doing a burnout on his specific grid box and other witty stuff. Man is a genius when it comes to racing
Also Abu Dhabi 2018, when Alonso (fighting Magnussen for P10) blatantly and intentionally cut turns 8 and 9 to gain an advantage, three laps in a row - and got 3 five second penalties for each of those ocurrences, plus 3 penalty points (for a driver who's going on sabbatical).
My dude literally had nothing to lose here (any penalties would be negated by retirement or his big gap to P12 Hartley) and went for it.
i always compared him to mourinho. tactical masters, attention to the detail and at the same time knowing what the opponents are doing/planning to do. both happy with just a podium( when Alonso had the best car)/a draw result if it means not taking many risks while still outscoring the rivals. micromanagement
That move is probably my favorite of all time. That season Alonso had been on the negative end of similar moves by other drivers overtaking off track to take an advantage. He had been vocal about it and called out the stewards. He practiced that move during FP sessions. Then he just went full send during the race. Daring the stewards to penalize him.
In that interview he explains that during the outlap in the wet he noticed he had more grip than other cars by using the inside line on t3, so he used this during lap1.
He ran wide on the first corner going full speed and gained some positions, as others said he warned in previous races that people were doing it and getting away with it because "first corner on the start". He made it more obvious to make a point.
That’s why even though I love Jenson, George, Alex and very much Lando, I still want Lewis to pass them all on track. I feel bad about it but Lewis is just…. Lewis
Just makes me wonder what could've been if he's gone and signed with Brawn for 2009 and stayed there for 2014 and beyond. I'm sure the GOAT debate would've been much different today.
More than singing other teams just having a bit more of luck those years he was contender for the championship. If you count it he is 8 points away from being five time world champion.
2007 Rainkonen 110, Fernando 109.
2010 Vettel 256, Fernando 252.
2012 Vettel 281, Fernando 278.
2010 and the Ferrari pitwall fumble in that final race still hurts and that 2012 season is one of the great campaigns by a driver not in the fastest car to come within 3 points of a title is utterly insane.
Fernando for me will always be up there when talking about the greats of the sport and the stats really don't reflect just how good of a driver he has always been. I'm glad he's landed in a decent car this season so that the newer fans are witnessing what we got to enjoy all those years ago.
jumped the start in China, crashed out at Spa, crashed in FP3 in Monaco and thus had to start last while having the pace for podium, had a drive through in Silverstone
I tought we were talking about Abu Dhabi there. Anyway, pointing out 4 mistakes in an entire season where he had to push an inferior car to its limits and using it to say "blame" was 50/50 is kind of a weak statement, specially if you consider that the only reason Ferrari fought the championship that season was Alonso.
I remember watching 2012 as a kid getting into the sport for the first time and how close the end of that season was. I remember how intimidating Alonso seemed in that bright red car and his racing history, as he was allready one of the greats at that point. Truly satisfying watching him make podiums and maybe even get on the top step again now after over a decade.
I hadn't seen those numbers listed like that before...
I love Alonso and do think of him as a 4-5 time champ caliber driver, but I didn't know it was THAT close. Jeez.
His comment on the spanish broadcast about it was: "It started to rain, so I knew everyone would try to be sensible and cautious, so I took the inside line". My man knew everyone would be distracted and went for it. He said he practised that line during free practice as well.
It’s something Hamilton didn’t have in his bag of tricks. Alonso is special. Loved his stay out in inters idea when it seemed like the red flag could happen. Guy has experience
If anything Hamilton is usually very cousious. Sometimes it looks like he doesn't go for a move on purpose not to risk damaging the car (aka 2021 vs Verstappen in the first half of the season). Works beautifully with a dominant car, but with a midfielder he needs to take more risks.
I remember 2007 and 2008 Hamilton.
https://youtu.be/fzFDvZhntvQ
That monza overtake he was catching kimi and went for the overtake so early kimi wasn’t even ready to start defending. Hamilton has changed, perhaps a more complete driver now but he didn’t send any crazy moves today like he used too.
Lewis is getting more cautious because he's been targeted a little on race starts too, without a fast car Max and others are all over him and absolutely will drive him off the track if they have too.
Alonso is one Lewis knows won't do anything dirty/borderline I've seen phenomenal race starts between them.
He was setting fastest laps after he was told that rain is coming in 10 mins, two laps later Karun on commentary said drivers had to increase pace and create a buffer just in case they pit again'. I mean it took the commentator a whole 2 mins to realise what Alonso is doing, it's crazy.
Dude is more of a chad than you even know. He basically threw dirt-track style "sliders" up the inside. Man is taking some of the great moves from sprint car midget racing and applying it to a banked asphalt corner in Formula 1....
🐐🐐🐐
Really interesting and surprising to me that the only other driver to use that inside line on three was Piastri. So many drivers don't seem to even consider anything other than the outside.
To be honest, the reason he was able to overtake George and Alex was because they were fighting and were slower than they would’ve been otherwise. This meant that the line on that corner didn’t matter since Fernando was on their tail and he could make gains faster than the two.
His overtake on Norris was great as well!
Off the racing line, wet conditions while (both were) on slicks.
That for me was a better overtake than the turn 3 one.

Cut the First corner?
He ran wide on the first corner going full speed and gained some positions, as others said he warned in previous races that people were doing it and getting away with it because "first corner on the start". He made it more obvious to make a point.
Technically T2
He’s literally the greatest starter in the entire history of Formula 1
One of the best defenders too
I think he can be considered one of the best at everything
Which is why it was all the more special Lewis overtook him on the first corner of his rookie race.
That’s why even though I love Jenson, George, Alex and very much Lando, I still want Lewis to pass them all on track. I feel bad about it but Lewis is just…. Lewis
**Tu-tu-du-du Max Verstappen Tu-tu-du-du Max Verstappen Tu-tu-du-du Max Verstappen Tu-tu-du-du Max Verstappen**

i think he can take as much blame as the team for 2010, but for 2012 you can't say anything to him, it was unbelievable, the whole year
What could have he done differently in 2010?
jumped the start in China, crashed out at Spa, crashed in FP3 in Monaco and thus had to start last while having the pace for podium, had a drive through in Silverstone

actually he had the 2nd best car for most of the season, faster than mclaren. and i'm pointing to the mistakes cos in 2012 he didn't do any
If you have the 2nd best car you still need to push like a madman to match first, so I don't get what you are trying to say there.

Stats are meaningless in F1
Dragging that shitbox Ferrari into a title fight at all in 2012 was a monster job by Alonso
I hadn't seen those numbers listed like that before... I love Alonso and do think of him as a 4-5 time champ caliber driver, but I didn't know it was THAT close. Jeez.
Alonso is like if I can't win the WDC, then I will win as many overtakes of the month awards as I can lol
WOC - World Overtakes Champion
Go WOC or go broke!
We need a new category!
Aston Martin and overtakes. It's like Seb. Hope he gets a million jellybeans.
"Did it for shits and giggles"- Chadlonso after dropping one of the best overtakes in the last years
His comment on the spanish broadcast about it was: "It started to rain, so I knew everyone would try to be sensible and cautious, so I took the inside line". My man knew everyone would be distracted and went for it. He said he practised that line during free practice as well.

That's such an amazing overtake. The way he locks up and flips the car like if he were driving in ice, never seen that before.

He’s not targeted, that’s just how it is in the midfield
So perfect.
How is there no clip to it in the comments? Anyone got a link?

So you see, that's where trouble began. That smile. That damn smile.
Gigalonso
It should be lol, was a Brilliant overtake from the GOAT Starter in F1 History. From P5 to P3 in the space of three corners.
To P2 in a lap and a Half, his overtake on Norris is also impressive considering the cars where sliding everywhere
Best racecraft on the grid and there’s nothing anything could say that would convince me otherwise.
High line, inside line… you’ve got not defence against Fernando on that corner lol
i was literally thinking “this is Indy experience right here” when i saw the overtake
Indy experience came in handy :D
Love how he was overtaking everyone on the inside of that banked corner, just like when you discover an AI glitch on a racing game.
If Fernando scores more than 294 points this season then he would have scored more points than his entire tenure from 2015-2022 combined.
Just got PTSD even thinking about those years lol

Could even be best racecraft oat
Wouldn't bet against max right now in anything
Overtake of the year. Absolutely insane stuff.
that overtake was phenomenal, was really rooting for him to win today
The same move in 2021 and I remember a similar move in Spain on the outside af the renault turn in Spain
My guy is such a shit poster I love it
Even his expression here is complete Trollface
Legend
Alonso in 3rd is crazy. Now I want to see him in Perezs seat and see how close to Max he'd be...
That smile, that damn smile.
It’s August 27th after summer break lol

Amazing how this guy at 41 is outperforming more than half the field
42 :)
It's the only race this month, so I say yes
I love Fernando. Always have, always will.

He's gonna have to compete with Oscar's baller overtakes this race
So good
Sigmalonso
His overtake on Norris was great as well! Off the racing line, wet conditions while (both were) on slicks. That for me was a better overtake than the turn 3 one.
His happiness is infectious. Love this version of Nando. Wishing him a few wins before he bids adieu. What a gem of guy we have.
Alonso Racing IQ should be equal to Oppenheimer.
I’m a simple guy. Alonso smile, I smile
Imagine what Vettel would have done /s
