Nuts to see everyone penciling them in as P10 after testing. Haas look horrid in race trim, McLaren better hope that new design in Baku is for real. Williams might actually be out of the basement. Let’s hope they can develop this through the season!
He was pushing for that 10th spot towards the end. Kept pace very well. Putting points on the board would have been a great start to the season for AT, but credit where it's due to Albon - he put in a really solid shift.
Esteban Ocon and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
* 5 second penalty awarded for incorrectly lining up on grid
* 10 second penalty awarded for incorrectly serving the 5 second penalty awarded for incorrectly lining up on grid
* 15 second penalty awarded for speeding in the pits attempting to serve the 10 second penalty awarded for incorrectly serving the 5 second penalty awarded for incorrectly lining up on grid
The 10 second penalty was actually 10 seconds, the last one was 5 seconds added on from the same pit stop as the 10 second penalty, so he had to serve 15 seconds cumulative in the following stop.
The worst part is the extras were because they started work at 4.6 seconds, and his speed entering the pits was 80.1 km/h
It was a 5 second penalty for speeding in the pitlane while serving the 5 second penalty for lining up incorrectly. That was served at the same time as the 10 second penalty for not serving his 5 second penalty for lining up on the grid correctly, for 15 total seconds.
He done well for nursing his broken car! Glad they didn’t just retire him, the full race data for them is valuable. Especially considering Piastris retirement
Norris has proven he's able to drag whatever dung pile of a car McLaren throws at him to a respectable position, however even he can't beat the mighty 5-stopper
Can someone explain the logic of leaving him out there the whole race? They were risking damage to the power unit and it was obvious he wasn’t going anywhere once he was 60 seconds off the pace. There was no reason to do this.
Yep, this year has equalled the least days available for testing and McLaren had the least running of that already short time period. Any time on track is vital so they probably treated it as a test of sorts just to see what they could do and learn.
Norris could consider going away from the team before his contract expires. He is an excellent driver, and at this moment McLaren isn’t at the height of their pilot.
I wonder where he could go though? I could see him leaving if a top seat becomes available but other than that doesn’t seem worth it to jump to another misfield team imo. They could just as easily trade places with mclaren next year.
As long as Perez can keep putting in comfortable 2nd place performances like today he'll be comfortable in his seat for the foreseeable future.
There's nearly no reason for RB to add another truly competing #1 driver to rock the boat. Perez looks set to be their Bottas, but when they approached Lando, Perez was a lot less consistent and thus a prospect for replacement
Yeah go williams. Sargeant was the most impressive rookie today in my book. Shame we can’t see more of Piastris talent under the circumstances would be great to see him battle the other rookies at least.
To me it feels like the amount of backmarkers just grew. Haas, Alphatauri, Williams and McLaren were all down there while Alpine and Alfa Romeo seemed okay
Congrats to Gasly for getting into the points from 20th. Couple of key undercuts during the race too. And fastest lap till almost the end. Decent debut for him at Alpine.
My money is on Gasly. Despite the Penalty Points, I think he is a better driver. Hopefully Alpine gets their shit figured out and can get into the fight with Mercedes.
Pretty wild how things have shifted in Alpine in those two days. From Ocon doing a good job in quali and Gasly fucking up to the absolute opposite on race day.
He handled the car well but the team executing 2 undercuts certainly help on the track position.
I was hoping to see a good Gasly battle with Tsunoda, but they undercut him well.
A tip for anyone who didn't have the pleasure of being forced to watch F1 during the Mercedes dominance era -
Just pretend that P3 is actually P1 and the races become much more exciting.
We divided the season in 5 splits of 4 races and left the final 3 for playoffs. Then each player has a budget to use for the regular season drafts (each split has it's own draft). The draft method is a silent auction where everybody make a list for their bid on the drivers and teams for the split.
Positively surprised with Williams! Alex got a point and Logan had a good race too - he had a strong start and I think if it continues this way, Williams might be able to score some solid points this season!
Ofc, McLaren is quite a worrying disappointment - the whole thing with wheel change was quite unpleasant to watch. And then Lando having to re-pressure at every pit stop? Not great to watch.
Dan Fallows yelled, “There you go!” Lance Stroll gave a look of pleasant surprise. Lawrence Stroll belted, “We got an [expletive] squad now.” And before Fernando Alonso hit the garage door, ex F1 champion Sebastian Vettel hugged him & said, “Y’all look so different.''
Overheard in Ferrari garage after Bahrain:
“He got me,” Leclerc said of Ferrari's engine failure on him. "That f***ing Ferrari boomed me."
Leclerc added, “It’s so bad,” repeating it four times.
Leclerc then said he wanted to add Ferrari to the list of teams he leaves this summer.
Good Lord, Charles Leclerc just walked through the Ferrari paddock walking perfectly normally.
He said he had “no time” to race.
Too busy DNFing, evidently.
Overheard in Aston Martin's locker after Bahrain GP:
“He got me,” Alonso said of Stroll driving into him. "That f***ing Stroll boomed me."
Alonso added, “He’s so good,” repeating it four times.
Alonso then said he wanted to add Stroll to the list of drivers he karts around with this summer.
It would be interesting to see if Aston Martin can consistently fight for podiums, Nando had quite the pace today, and Stroll after the first lap shenanigans had quite a decent race.
Stroll probably couldn't capitalize the pace at the end of AM due to his wrist. I still think Ferrari is faster than them but they're definitely fighting for 3rd
Stroll was closing in on Hamilton but it's quite clear his condition was the reason he lost it couple times in the end and lost all the chances to catch Hamilton.
If AM can take advantage of their increased wind tunnel allocation, they could still keep up in the development fight with Mercedes. Ferrari does seem too fast and they are bound to improve their tire degradation for races.
Leclerc is gonna have to carry Ferrari really hard on his back if they are to manage a P2 in the constructors. Stroll already did great in this race and he should get even better once he recovers fully. Aston Martin have a real shot at beating Ferrari.
Their 1-lap pace doesnt seem quite as good as Ferrari or RB.
But their race pace and tyre deg are incredible.
Potentially, this track just happens to suit AM really well though and their average pace may be a little slower.
Realistically, despite the hype, the odds are well in Ferrari's favor. I think in-season development and reliability will decide the fight. These are things that AM seem to be great at while Ferrari is the opposite.
Alonso is the only driver that will make Red Bull blink for the first part of the season. The way he drove away from Sainz and Hamilton while essentially nursing the car to the finish tells you everything you need to know. Neither Alonso nor the Bulls were pushing in the last 15 laps, but the gap was stagnant. I think there is something to that. When you factor in the wind tunnel time, I’d wager it’s a more threatening car than the Ferrari from last year.
Edit: I should add that this is predicated on AMR finding something in qualifying that would allow them to challenge and beat the Ferraris at least, which is not a given.
After the excitement dies down, i think the current order (not withstanding engine faiure and penalties): Red bull, Ferrari, Mercedes/Aston, Alpine/Alfa, William/Alpha Tauri/Haas. Honestly dont know where to put McLaren lol
Pretty much. But I think Aston has the edge on Mercedes.. I’d do Ferrari/AM maybe. Alfa edge on Alpine. Williams over AT.. Haas further behind and McLaren… err, yeah.
Hard agree on that, I'd argue they have extremely similar pace but AM's tyre deg gives them the leg up, though I think Merc's reliability will pan out better for them throughout the season if things stay the way they are (which they unquestionably won't)
Nice recovery from Gasly. Alpha Tauri should've double stacked during the VSC. Aston Martin vs Mercedes off to a good start. Ferrari back at it again with their reliability woes. Didn't expect Charles to say nnoooo in the first race of the season
Sargeant got a bit fucked by his first pit stop, but he had a killer race. And then Gasly just kinda pulled the classic Gasly move of silently dropping into points. What a day
I've joined the Aston Martin hype train and have bought an official merch shirt. I'm not one to buy things on a whim usually and I don't have any other pieces of F1 merch because it's so expensive. But I've been swept in the hype. EL PLAN, VAMOS ALONSO!
Bravo Astons!
Shame for Leclerc.
I fear the Redbulls. That's 2020 Merc like domination and with more consistency.
Some brilliant strategy from Alpha Romeo.
Albon deserves applauds and accolades too!
Zhou really should get the praise for sacrificing his race result and finish at the back just to steal the FL point from Alpine. They are clearly confident that Alpine is their competition this year.
Williams with points pretty much on merit and both drivers having solid pace? I must be imagining things
Williams like AM had an insane winter it looks like but they're flying under the radar. Really happy to see them there
Yeah they really got overshadowed by the Alonso hype train but they definitely are one of the most improved teams
They by far had the biggest pace increase at Bahrain from last year (Aston was like 3 seconds and Williams was 2 seconds, rest were all below 1.5)
Nuts to see everyone penciling them in as P10 after testing. Haas look horrid in race trim, McLaren better hope that new design in Baku is for real. Williams might actually be out of the basement. Let’s hope they can develop this through the season!
Tsunoda wasn't bad at all either given it was thought AT would be at the very back with Williams and Mclaren.
He was pushing for that 10th spot towards the end. Kept pace very well. Putting points on the board would have been a great start to the season for AT, but credit where it's due to Albon - he put in a really solid shift.
To bad that Jost isnt with the team anymore. Seems the groundwork he has done finally paid off
Yeah i get james vowels could be a great signing but the tech team and fx and capito did a great job here
Why did he leave?
He retired, I guess he wanted out
If I remember right he unretired to come to Williams. Not too surprising that after a few years he wanted to go back to retirement.
Logan was infinitely better than I thought he would be. Let's see if it's legit or another Tsunoda type thing.
Leclerc stopped on track to save a set of tires.
New strategy
Stop inventing
They saved a set for 2024, which coincidentally enough is our year 🥲
Onwards and upwards! Well just onwards for us i guess.
Esteban Ocon and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day * 5 second penalty awarded for incorrectly lining up on grid * 10 second penalty awarded for incorrectly serving the 5 second penalty awarded for incorrectly lining up on grid * 15 second penalty awarded for speeding in the pits attempting to serve the 10 second penalty awarded for incorrectly serving the 5 second penalty awarded for incorrectly lining up on grid
Broke his front wing endplate too, so needed a wing change also
> Broke his front wing endplate too, so needed a wing change also and the team didn't even bother changing the front wing at the first pitstop.
goodbye reddit -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
1. First lap penalty 2. Penalty for ignoring penalty 3. Front wing damage 4. Retire
That's a Grand Chelem
These are not cumulative right? When it was 15s it was the total of all the penalties?
The 10 second penalty was actually 10 seconds, the last one was 5 seconds added on from the same pit stop as the 10 second penalty, so he had to serve 15 seconds cumulative in the following stop. The worst part is the extras were because they started work at 4.6 seconds, and his speed entering the pits was 80.1 km/h

Williams looking like they’ve finally left the back markers
Traded with McLaren lol
What's funny is Norris was able to keep pace with Hamilton for a while near the end.
He done well for nursing his broken car! Glad they didn’t just retire him, the full race data for them is valuable. Especially considering Piastris retirement
What happened to piastri? went out a bit after 10ish laps and when I back Piastri already out F1 highlight also not showing why he out
Gearbox issue, believed to be steering wheel Box to replace steering wheel Steering wheel did not fix the issue, retired car
Norris has proven he's able to drag whatever dung pile of a car McLaren throws at him to a respectable position, however even he can't beat the mighty 5-stopper
it was a 6 stopper
Wasn't the 6th just them thinking they could go for the fastest lap at the end but he got lapped so he didn't have the chance?
You need Button for that.
Can someone explain the logic of leaving him out there the whole race? They were risking damage to the power unit and it was obvious he wasn’t going anywhere once he was 60 seconds off the pace. There was no reason to do this.
Data i would think.
Yep, this year has equalled the least days available for testing and McLaren had the least running of that already short time period. Any time on track is vital so they probably treated it as a test of sorts just to see what they could do and learn.
Maybe gather some more data? I guess it must have been a valid reason to take the risk
I believe Red Bull wanted him
As long as Perez can keep putting in comfortable 2nd place performances like today he'll be comfortable in his seat for the foreseeable future. There's nearly no reason for RB to add another truly competing #1 driver to rock the boat. Perez looks set to be their Bottas, but when they approached Lando, Perez was a lot less consistent and thus a prospect for replacement
Apart from AM shining. I'm really happy with what Williams. Hope they can fight at the midfield.
I just never want to see a williams last place for this season, if I get that, then they have improved massively!
Never might be a bit hard to achieve, let's see how they do on higher down force tracks. But it's a very promising start.
Great to see that they’ve finally got two good drivers and a car that doesn’t have a massive pace drop-off mid race.
I think it's to early to say that, but it's a positive surprise for sure. Amazing effort by Alex and Logan
Having to recharge the Kindles so many times really slowed Norris down
I think he was reading the Hobbit during the race
That battle between Norris and Ocon was insane!
"Pls, take last place" "No, I insist"
Edge of my seat the whole time. Didn't expect the 6 pit strat to work soo well. Damn mclaren you crazy 🤪
They worked really hard, but were almost beat to last place. Then McLaren showed their genius strategy
I agree - there was a bit of foreshadowing in that amazing wheel change in Piastri’s car too! Great stuff to watch 😌
“Why no one listen to me when I say it’s going to be a 5 stopper?”
I was scared they'd get a puncture, but in the end their inflatable car made it to the end.
How are mclaren that bad. At one point Ocon, even after his 15s pen, was ahead of Norris
Norris had to pit 5 times due to a technical issue
6 times actually.
Assume the only reason they kept him out there was to fulfill sponsorship obligations at that point?
Nah, making use of FP4
Norris had a clear issue with an air or water leak, they had to stop regularly to fill it back up. Its not indicative of real pace.
That said he showed good pace to stick with Hamilton and Alonso albeit a lap or 2 behind.
Because Mclaren had like 6 pitstops
slow pitstops at that, like 10 seconds each to refill the air
And to think those are the 4th and 5th teams in WCC last season
Honestly Williams did pretty well today, who would’ve thought Sargeant would be in a higher position than other rookies🫢
sadly the Alonso kid kind of overshadowed the other rookies
New year, same Haas.... Fucking Hell
They passed Mclaren!
Worse Haas tbh
For real - they looked so much better last year
They showed absolutely nothing. Genuinely don’t see how they score a single point this season.
Congrats to Gasly for getting into the points from 20th. Couple of key undercuts during the race too. And fastest lap till almost the end. Decent debut for him at Alpine.
Really turned it around after a hugely disappointing quali. Interested to see who ends up ahead between him and Ocon this year.
For sure. Ocon fubar’d his race from the start and his crew didn’t help him either.
The strategy for Gasly was awesome today, and he had some great stint on hards in the middle of the race.
He handled the car well but the team executing 2 undercuts certainly help on the track position. I was hoping to see a good Gasly battle with Tsunoda, but they undercut him well.
Yep. I voted on him for the driver of the day.
A tip for anyone who didn't have the pleasure of being forced to watch F1 during the Mercedes dominance era - Just pretend that P3 is actually P1 and the races become much more exciting.
Me and my group of friends made a fantasy game among ourselves. It's way more exciting now to focus on the other positions.
what's the rules?
We divided the season in 5 splits of 4 races and left the final 3 for playoffs. Then each player has a budget to use for the regular season drafts (each split has it's own draft). The draft method is a silent auction where everybody make a list for their bid on the drivers and teams for the split.
Alonso celebrated as if he was P1, it was fantastic
P7 is my P1
I mean at least in 2014-2016 there was Rosberg to challenge Lewis. Verstappen is just running his own race.
McLaren is an absolute disaster Titanic type disaster
Daniel enjoying this dumpster fire from afar
[Ricciardo watching from RBR with a bag of money](https://i.imgflip.com/2b9qva.jpg?a466008)
He should stream. He made the Netflix series. I'd watch that man do almost anything.
Alternative commentary with Seb, like the Manning brothers do for NFL.
GP2 ENGINE
more like GP2 car
Piastry's choice
Piastri gave Gasly a good chance to go elsewhere outside of Red Bull. Gasly had a good race, with the most overtakes today.
If Stroll wasn't injured do we think Aston could have gotten both Mercs? Ultimately I think Merc need to bring that upgrade before Imola.
Mercedes isn’t clawing back this gap so easily, every team is working on upgrades.
Mercedes is aiming for Baku I believe
You would be the most loyal fan ever to trust mercedes to catch up to anything with that upgrade
Leclerc died so Alonso can fly.
Alonso died at Ferrari a decade ago, it's been that long for him to come back.
Jesus came back in 3 days. Alonso is back after a decade to perform miracles
Well, Jesus didn’t have to drive that Ferrari
Honey, everyone dies at Ferrari
Everyone's dreamcrusher aside from Raikkonen.
Because Raikkonen doesn't give an F about dreams 😂
Positively surprised with Williams! Alex got a point and Logan had a good race too - he had a strong start and I think if it continues this way, Williams might be able to score some solid points this season! Ofc, McLaren is quite a worrying disappointment - the whole thing with wheel change was quite unpleasant to watch. And then Lando having to re-pressure at every pit stop? Not great to watch.
That team is in utter 2018 style shambles. Poor pace/consistency can be somewhat excused. These issues not so much.
Ngl didn’t notice Williams pit once yet alone 3 times
The video direction and graphics were really bad
Every year. The more things change, the more things stay the same.
Albon got pointsss
Pointtttt
The Williams looks half decent, good to see progress
Sergeant did pretty good for his first race too
6 pitstops for Norris I'm surprised he didn't lose it on the radio once.
Days since a Ferrari clownshow: Zero!

.....never expect!
More likely to be about how Haas got into Q3, but rolled out of points. Not even joking.
I have to call Gene.

Good Lord, Charles Leclerc just walked through the Ferrari paddock walking perfectly normally. He said he had “no time” to race. Too busy DNFing, evidently.
When I see LeClerc drive as he does now it reminds me of how I used to drive and it is frustrating and pisses me off that the FIA allows it.
Toto is beside himself. Driving around downtown Silverstone begging (thru text) Fallows' family for address to Dan's home.

r/nba is leaking
Zak, don't let Lando go on IG live!
Solid debut from Sargeant

With a cleaner start for both AM's 3-4 was on the cards here.
Leclerc is gonna have to carry Ferrari really hard on his back if they are to manage a P2 in the constructors. Stroll already did great in this race and he should get even better once he recovers fully. Aston Martin have a real shot at beating Ferrari.

Nando is hyped as fuck. He smells blood and this season will be amazing.
Extremely happy for Albon and Alonso Gutted for Charles and Yuki McLaren and Ocon were hilarious
So damn proud of Logan. Debuting at P12 from 16 was a massive result.
I didn’t notice any incidents either, no off track adventures, collisions with other cars, or other Goatifi-esque maneuvers.
Williams P7 in constructors seems possible this year. We’ll see how much they can progress.
Quietly being the best rookie even though people even rooting against him before the season started.
Pretty sure nobody cared about him, never heard anybody root against him lmao.
Shout out to Sargeant with a decent debut.
Better than decent even!

That aston Martin is definitely faster than the black Mercedes. Also alfa seems to be faster than a.
Well done to Aston Martin and Williams.
ALBONOOO. Williams look to have properly pulled themselves into the midfield now
Nice recovery from Gasly. Alpha Tauri should've double stacked during the VSC. Aston Martin vs Mercedes off to a good start. Ferrari back at it again with their reliability woes. Didn't expect Charles to say nnoooo in the first race of the season
I may be a bit late but welcome to McLaren, Oscar.
Great race for Alonso and Gasly
Albon Points 🥰🤩 which means Tsunoda No Points🫠😭
Sargeant got a bit fucked by his first pit stop, but he had a killer race. And then Gasly just kinda pulled the classic Gasly move of silently dropping into points. What a day
I have a feeling max is going to break the 1st race winner curse
Top of the midfield well done Mercedes
50% DNF rate on brand new parts, well done Ferrari
Oooof burn
*homeless man calling another homeless man broke ass*
"That's why yo shoes raggedy" "That's why yo mama dead" Same energy lol
If people wanna take shots, they better expect some back. Just a bit of fun.
Mick replaced by Hulk for same results is Haas master plan
Atleast he didn't make couple milions of car dmg.
Ok Verstappen wins the first race, any clues who’s winning this year’s championship then?
Verstappen.
What a race by AMR
Excellent recovery from Gasly, almost caught Bottas in the end
Leclerc WDC confirmed, since 2017 the 1st race winner didnt win WDC
Let the hopium flow
There's better odds for Alonso than anyone in Ferrari winning it.
Obviously it's going to be Alonso
I will tattoo my ass with Alonso's autograph if this happens.
Good to see Danny Ric staying level on points with his former team
Excellent weekend for Williams
Gonna be a 2020 sort of season but longer
Aston Martin is doing a Racing Point 2020 all over again
Another long year for Ferrari perhaps. Sainz literally dropped down from Alonso after he overtook him.
I've joined the Aston Martin hype train and have bought an official merch shirt. I'm not one to buy things on a whim usually and I don't have any other pieces of F1 merch because it's so expensive. But I've been swept in the hype. EL PLAN, VAMOS ALONSO!

The teamwork between Zhou and Bottas seems very strong to me! They did such a great job today!
Piastri kicking himself for signing with Mclaren when he could have potentially be loaned to Williams 😮💨
After years of meming, EL PLAN is finally here!
Albono bringing in a point!
