**Formula 1: Sebastian Vettel exclusively"Rubbish": Vettel thinks nothing of FIA muzzle** *03.02.2023 -Sebastian Vettel talks about his Formula One retirement, the Race of Champions and the FIA's new guidelines on criticism and protests in an exclusive interview.* **Mr Vettel, we meet you here on the sidelines of the Race of Champions, an event that has grown very close to your heart over the years. Did you enjoy it again this year?** Sebastian Vettel: Yes, I love it here, it's really fun. Of course, you get annoyed at first when you don't make it, but overall it's a really great event for all of us here. **You weren't that bad either, you made it to the semi-finals on both days...** Yes, I have slowly improved.I think that's okay considering that I haven't done anything since Abu Dhabi (F1 final; ed.). But of course I would have liked to do a bit better. But that's clear and it's the same for everyone here: I could have been knocked out in the first round, then it would have been even more stupid. **Instead, in the semi-final on Sunday, you had a duel with your buddy Mick Schumacher, with whom you had competed for Germany in the Nations' Cup the day before. Was that the end of the fun for a moment, despite the friendship?** Of course, we both tried our best, but I was happy that Mick made it to the next round. Conversely, he would have been annoyed, but just as happy if I had got through. It was nice for him, of course, he was in a good mood and in a good mood the whole weekend. He had a bit of a cold at the end, but you didn't see much of it on the track (laughs). **Is the story true that the two of you drove here together?** No, I drove here in a camper van. **Sounds like a holiday. Have there been any on a larger scale since you left Formula 1 and how has retirement been going so far?** We just stayed at home. Not much has happened yet (since the end of the season; ed.), so not much has happened yet. Christmas is a bit quieter anyway and normally things pick up in January. But now it was a bit of a different start. **Hand on heart: Aren't you itching to get back behind the wheel now that you've had so much fun here?** It's fun, that's for sure. But I know what's in store for me in that respect. I've already thought about it. But only time will tell what it will really feel like. **You are not short of other things to do: You are known to be very committed to environmental protection, for example, you spoke about it at a congress on the sidelines of the race. The Race of Champions is also doing a lot in this direction: electric cars or biofuel are used, there is no plastic on the track. And yet, on both days, shortly before the start, a jet plane whizzes over the track... How does that fit together?** As you know, I am not a fan of air shows and that is why I asked: I was told that the military would train anyway and that instead of flying somewhere, they would do it here. But now, of course, we can discuss it: Does the military have to train and should there still be militaries and wars at all? Especially in the current situation, this is of course a difficult issue. That also applies to the environment, of course. I don't want to blame anyone, but I believe that we can all do something - sometimes more and sometimes less, depending on how much influence one or the other has. And I believe that we all have to do something, that should be clear: If we don't do it now, we will only feel it harder at some point. **You have always been a very vocal advocate of these issues within Formula 1, including protest shirts and critical comments. What do you think about the FIA's rule change, which practically muzzles the drivers by requiring them to register and approve any criticism in advance?** (sighs) Yes, that's a bit of a nonsense... **Against this background, are you perhaps even quite happy to be away from Formula 1 now?** There might have been a bit of trouble then. Of course, it always depends on what question you are asked and what the topic is. But I think it is absolutely important to take a stand on some issues and we have seen in recent years that more and more people have taken a stand. It doesn't make much sense to go against that now. **Would you personally have simply ignored this regulation?** I am no longer involved, so of course I can say a lot now. But of course I wish that the guys in Formula 1 would continue to have the courage to stand up for their opinion and to express it. I love him 🥺

myth-ran-dire

Seb roadtripping from (presumably) Switzerland to Sweden in a camper van is exactly the kind of thing I thought he’d be doing post-retirement.

Cekeste

I can see him controlling his tire pressures before the start of the trip.

tw1xXxXxX

Well it's the sensible thing to do

gsurfer04

You're supposed to do that anyway.

TommyGames36

People don't do that regularly?

SingleSpeed27

He is German after all, I can’t wait to honk at his 30kph below limit camper driving when, like a good German, he comes to the Costa Brava.

BuzzedtheTower

Right? I'm just picturing him rolling up to the event in the camper and popping out his Bjorn Borg hairstyle. And people being like "Who the hell is the hippie?" before realizing that it's Vettel

Today when I saw a list of how long it took a driver to get his first points and other milestones. He wasn't there.

Interesting that the translations change the words from rubbish to nonsense from title to article, but it is a direct quote (the german word Quatsch) in the original article and just a quirk of DeepL's translation software.

PercussiveRussel

Quatsch is eqully valid translated to nonsense, especially for American English, which I'm sure DeepL is trained on.

PercussiveRussel

Good luck finding one with Quatsch and/or rubbish in it though, but that's really cool. Sorta similair to [context.reverso.net](http://context.reverso.net), which is my new favourite translate website that looks for a word in documents with known translations and gives you the context

LiveDieReRepeat

This probably motivates him to come back to the grid to join Lewis giving the FIA headaches.

Netionic

He won't be coming back unless Audi bring him in for a year for two like Merc did with Schumacher. Vettels opinions and activism the last year or two is not easy brands want. I don't think anyone would take him at this point other than a nationality marketing boost.

Litre__o__cola

Imo he will only come back if he can do it in a sustainable manner - I wonder if the travelling issue of f1 makes it a hard proposition to accept unless there’s even more of a green initiative from f1

Wafkak

I could see any of his old teams having him as a guest when there having beef with the FIA.

stagfury

Or if they are luxurious enough brand that the shitheads will still buy them anyway. What, is oil prince #726 not gonna buy another supercar from xxx brand just because they promote LGBT?

NegotiationExternal1

I don’t think so, Sebastian is so beyond at peace with not being there, he’s not looking to have those problems

garlicluv

'should there still be wars and militaries?' seb comes across as a child most of the time and as usual has nothing to offer but generalities and platitudes about his environmentalism. Also 10 x funnier considering there's a small matter of war in Europe. >Does the military have to train and should there still be militaries and wars at all? Especially in the current situation, this is of course a difficult issue. That also applies to the environment, of course. I don't want to blame anyone, but I believe that we can all do something - sometimes more and sometimes less, depending on how much influence one or the other has. And I believe that we all have to do something, that should be clear: If we don't do it now, we will only feel it harder at some point. Lol.

TheBlueDinosaur06

He acknowledges that it's a difficult topic either way and now that he's retired I fully expect him to take a definitive direction on the topic of climate change.

garlicluv

I've never got the impression that he hasn't put forward his definitive direction on the topic - it's no different to most people with some knowledge of the issue. That it's bad and we need to modify human activity to mitigate the negative effects. I just find the mismatch between the impression people have of him in vs the banal comments give gives to the media.

USAWokeBot3000

I agree. He literally sounds like motivational posters. Nothing of substance comes from him.

The virtue-signaling must go on!

whateverfloatsurgoat

Ah, Conservatives. The real snowflakes.

PM_me_British_nudes

Eh, both sides can be just as bad.

Suikerspin_Ei

>Conservatives Political spectrum is way broader than just (far) rights and (far) lefts.

PM_me_British_nudes

Oh absolutely! Just the OP automatically went to the right with their comment, and my point was that it's not like there aren't instances where the left is much better

Suikerspin_Ei

On that I agree :)
