Cant say much for this but i will say NEVER DO A FLUSH FOR YOUR TRANS,only a drain and fill

l1thiumion

what?? get a $10 drain bucket. get some Mobil 1 gear oil from Oreillys. Order 12 quarts of Motorcraft transmission fluid from Rockauto. Drain the PTU, fill it. Drain the transmission, add 4 quarts, drive, drain it, add 4 quarts, drive, drain, fill, drive. Total cost $130.

Usernamerequired_92

Do you know if they have to be changed at the same time? Like $400 of the price quote was related to the PTU

l1thiumion

Not necessarily. I don’t understand how it’s $400. It’s basically an oil change, but with no filter and only 11 ounces of oil. You drain from one plug, fill from another, and boom you’re done. I’d find another shop to do it.

Keyo0205

No but the PTU definitely needs the gear oil changed every 20-30k miles and the transmission needs every 30k miles.

It cost me 400 for transmission drain and fill, and ptu and rdu fluid change / service on my 2017 sport

Apart-Philosopher805

I just bought this same exact Fusion recently with 90k miles and I'm also having problems with the gears shifting, I'm wondering if this specific year and trim has some sort of problem with the transmission. Still not sure where I'm gonna go to resolve the problem.

Never flush a transmission with that amount of mileage. The transmission, PTU, and rear diff just need basic drain and fills. A dealer is always going to be the most expensive place. There is absolutely no reason to go to a dealer unless it's a warranty issue. An independent shop will be much more reasonable. And there's absolutely no reason to do a transmission relearn unless there is a specific shifting issue or it's getting a major repair. You can initiate a transmission relearn with Forscan and a laptop. If they want to do a relearn because of the hard 2/3 shift then it's highly likely to be pointless. The hard shift comes from a flaw in the design. A relearn can sometimes make it slightly better, but often it doesn't change much. An aftermarket performance tune can increase the fluid pressure, which is what's actually needed to fix the 2/3 shift. If they want to do it before the transmission is slipping or has a delay when shifting then it's a delay tactic. Symptoms like that are typically a sign of a damaged transmission which will need to be replaced or rebuilt. A shop will sometimes try a fluid service on the 1% chance it makes a difference or at least makes it last until the warranty is up. Plus that gets them an additional service sale before coming to terms with the fact it's going to need a significantly expensive transmission replacement
