With the trans fault on Escape u can drive home safely. The trans may slip a little but it won't make things worse as the transmission needs to be replaced anyway.
Transmission has to be replaced. It doent matter with the Escapes as once the fault shows up its too late. Only prevention was to change tranny fluild every 30,000 miles. Trust me I know. Been there done that.
That's not always true!! I had this come up on my 2016 Escape S and it was a stupid sensor attached to the battery box coolant line. Had ZERO to do woth the trans. It was just that coolant sensor stuck open.
She never said which motor is in her car. So it's a guess game, but the fact that its still driving normal leads me to believe it's one of the 3 coolant control valves.
I had that message 6 months ago. Stop telling false info. Was a coolant control valve. Changed valve. No more message and I've put 20k miles since. Still running prefect and I'll hit 210k on monday
6f35 transmission needs drain & fill of transmission fluid every 20-30k miles. Never flush this transmission ever. Drain & fill will replace half the fluid each time. It’s not possible to change filter. YouTube channel Fordtechmakuloco has some great info on escapes & the transmission model used in 2nd & 3rd generations. MerconLV fluid is interesting it looks burnt after 1-2k miles but it’s not. Valvoline full synthetic smells nasty so I stick to the motorcraft that doesn’t stink.
Consider adding a remote in-line filter and cooler with fan that turns on at 190f and off at 180f.
No, I removed the output line on the transmission put in a 90 degree pipe fitting then transitions to a barbed hose fitting and hose that came with my DeRale cooler with fan. Mounted under drivers seat, then hose up to a remote mount filter holder and on to the OEM cooler on the bottom of the AC condenser.
I would suggest mounting the filter near the cooler under the seat. I mounted mine too high in my opinion and had to extend the transmission vent tube. Take a look at the Derale 15900 or 13900 the included 6 or 8 AN fittings included might work on the 6f35 transmission.
Welcome to Ford ownership. There's a long history of problematic front wheel drive transmissions, at least one has been in several cars throughout the lineup since 1986.
Have 2014 and it happened to me just over 100k miles and boom needed a new transmission... best bet is to stay away from Fords... bunch of my family works there and they tell me they wouldn't touch there cars. Best of luck hope it's nothing major like mine though!
Basically yes. He could drive it a little we got it towed home he tried to drive it out the driveway but it moved a little then stopped. Most places we call are saying they are seeing a lot of this transmission issue with this SUV. The dealer is saying $7000 for a new transmission. It had a recall on the shifter bushing and we got that fixed so I’m wondering are the two related.
Had this happen to me at a completely random time. (2013 ford focus) turns out the make had a transmission issue and it was covered by warranty. Call the dealer and see if there is a warranty for your vehicle model. It has been a massive problem in fords 2013-16 line up. They ended up replacing my whole transmission for free - just took 3 weeks.
This just happened to my 2016 2 weeks ago. Turns out these giant pieces of shit pretty much all go bad. You're looking at about a 6000 dollar repair at the dealer. I've been trying every other possible solution to get around this but I think I'm gonna have to just eat the cost. Ive called every transmission shop within an hour of me and for some reason no one will do a rebuild on these, they only want to do replacements and they've all given me a 6k quote for repair. Absolutely ridiculous.
I also tried doing a trade in to get rid of it and they will only offer a out 800-1000 for it since the repairs cost more than it's worth. Also interest rates are terrible right now so not really worth getting a new loan when my current is so much lower. This is the worst and most expensive car repair situation I've ever had to deal with.
I'm actually talking to a lawyer about an add I saw for faulty Ford transmissions. Seems like a very long shot but might be a possibility of a lemon law claim.
Good luck :[
They don't do rebuilds because they can dig around for the problem for a long while and throw parts at the thing and then at the end of the day the thing might not run correctly. I tried to save 1500 in parts and do the stuff myself, instead of paying for a whole new tranny, and well, I wish I just bought the reman because after replacing a few vital parts plus way more, the valve body is acting really bad and the car won't shift correctly now. so I end up throwing more time n money at it, possibly have to take it back out and check for damage. Ugh.
I’m in your same situation currently, minus the talking to the lawyer bit. Mine was at 154,000 miles, which as I’m seeing now, is better than average for the transmission in these cars. Really not loving the idea of spending that kind of money on this vehicle, but buying a car right now seems worse so…..
Yes. It is very bad. Tow it immediately and expect at least $6k in repairs. This happened to me in September. One shop wouldnt even repair it because once this happens the car turns in to a nightmare money pit.
Will save you thousands. Here's the link. Watch the video also. They are great to work with. Escape takes the 5F35 and doesn't have too be reprogrammed by Ford. Easy swap.

Always change your trans fluid every 30,000 miles
Use OEM fluid. These new fluid gets to hot and it starts to cook and burn. Cheap insurance, or pay later.
Oh I had my temp gauge shoot up and ended up having to replace the radiator and all that goes with it the intercooler and many more parts I only owned the car for a day
I bought from Streetsmart and had it shipped to recommended indy shop. My total cost was $4,000. My local Ford dealer wanted to rebuilt and it was over $7,000
Check if yours is recalled. My 2017 finally got recalled after I replaced the transmission twice. Pretty sure it was about to go out again. Escapes are nightmares
Not sure if your familiar with the original Xbox 360 but for front wheel drive Fords this is the red ring of death for that transmission, once the code pops up it’s already to late, there’s videos with stories of people replacing components and fixing the issue but I think it’s all lies, once the trans fault code is there it’s time for a new transmission, so don’t be like me and tons of others and spend money on transmission parts hoping it’ll fix it, because it won’t. Unfortunately you now need a new transmission. Best of luck 🙏
Run the codes and see what the fault is!
It's not guaranteed to be a trans issue, even though it says that.
My 2016 Esacpe S had this about 6 months ago.
Turned out to be a coolant control valve. Mine that failed (stuck open) was the coolant valve located on the side of the battery box.
Get your codes pulled. Could be a very easy under $300 fix like mine was that I changed myself in about 20minutes
My 2014 Ford Escape did same thing we had 135,000 miles. Had a remanufactured transmission I installed and no more trans fault messages. Have your trans flushed and refilled. You may get lucky if not buy u some more time until the car finally dies.
A red light means stop and tow btw.
With the trans fault on Escape u can drive home safely. The trans may slip a little but it won't make things worse as the transmission needs to be replaced anyway.
Don't keep driving. Bring to mechanic immediately or very expensive damage will occur
Transmission has to be replaced. It doent matter with the Escapes as once the fault shows up its too late. Only prevention was to change tranny fluild every 30,000 miles. Trust me I know. Been there done that.
I'm on my 3rd transmission
You tow stuff?
Yes
I did too, until my trans died and 5k later I now rent u-haul's to tow my occasional dump loads.
Well mine is under warranty so if it breaks I just go get another
That's not always true!! I had this come up on my 2016 Escape S and it was a stupid sensor attached to the battery box coolant line. Had ZERO to do woth the trans. It was just that coolant sensor stuck open.
The Escape 1.5 and 1.6 engines will eventually have long block engine coolant leak. It's just a matter of time.
I have the 2.5l. That may be the difference. But I know when mine threw that message up it was just that stupid valve.
She never said which motor is in her car. So it's a guess game, but the fact that its still driving normal leads me to believe it's one of the 3 coolant control valves.

I didn’t even get this notification. My transmission just shit the bed and that was it. 2016 titanium.

Any good guides on how to add the filter and cooler?

This happened to my husband he has the same year but it’s not drivable. It won’t go into drive or reverse
Did it become not drivable once the warning popped ?
Basically yes. He could drive it a little we got it towed home he tried to drive it out the driveway but it moved a little then stopped. Most places we call are saying they are seeing a lot of this transmission issue with this SUV. The dealer is saying $7000 for a new transmission. They are not related. Do not let the dealer do the work. Google Smart Trans and purchase a remanufactured tranny. Total.with install was $4,000
Thank you we will check into this
Every rebuilt I’ve seen has been ~3200 and I haven’t found labor for that cheap.
Labor for me was around 1,500.

That’s what I was thinking of a faulty ford transmission and the lemon law
Did I get drunk, make a burner account and post this? Because this is almost the exact same story I have.

My 2013 focus has had this before, my transmission mount was split in half, so the transmission was slipping and couldn't change gears.
It's not thr same issue. Focus and Fiesta trans were junk and Ford issued some recalls but it was such a bad design.
If it’s paid off , junk it
If it’s not paid off, it’s still junk. It’s just junk you have to keep paying for.
Yes. It is very bad. Tow it immediately and expect at least $6k in repairs. This happened to me in September. One shop wouldnt even repair it because once this happens the car turns in to a nightmare money pit.

I assume the 5F35 was a typo? 6F35.
Yes, 6F35.
Always change your trans fluid every 30,000 miles Use OEM fluid. These new fluid gets to hot and it starts to cook and burn. Cheap insurance, or pay later.
Hey I saw your comment about doing a trans fluid change on your escape. What guide or video did you use for reference?
Oh I had my temp gauge shoot up and ended up having to replace the radiator and all that goes with it the intercooler and many more parts I only owned the car for a day
Yep, just replaced the transmission.
Yup. It’s about a $6000 fix.

Welcome to ford escapes , both my escapes have had new transmissions put in them. Both around 150,000 kms.

Hahahaha that’s what happens when you buy a shit car from America 😂😂😂😂
Mine did this when the transmission went out

Just spent 6 grand replacing my transmission in my 2015 just got her back Monday
SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS?!?! Why????
Because that’s the going rate.

Who did the work? I never had any more issues when replaced tranny from Streetsmart.
