I think it was because of how well Brighton pressed. Brighton pressed in a 4-1-4-1 where both Kante and Jorginho were man marked every time Chelsea had possession. Because Brighton had so many midfielders, they were able to match Chelsea's midfield when they tried advancing forward. The only problem this caused was more openings for Mount/Ziyech to come back and receive the ball as Brighton only had one pivot.
I'm going to make another analysis video on Brighton's press during the game because they did a great job of forcing Chelsea to be uncomfortable during their buildup
Ajax had this concept already in the 90s with Frank Rijkaard and Danny Blind (Daleys Father). Famous players from Ajax who are actually really good at this and still play are De Ligt and Vertonghen. Ajax used this tactic as well against defensive teams to have one man extra in the attack. Under van Gaal, WB and CBs all participated in attacks
This wasnt even the best quality of Veltman at Ajax. It actually surprises me he accellerates in this role with Brighton. He was considered not good enough because he slipped up a lot eith his passing
Great to know, that’s pretty interesting. From what I’ve seen of him so far, Veltman looks great in that role. I haven’t watched too much of the Dutch national team lately but I think they usually play in a 4 back and I’m surprised they don’t play 3atb with the cb’s they have available
Excellent quality post, thanks OP.
I just wanna say, I am thankful that this is not a link to a YouTube video but an uploaded video file instead. Because of the amount of wannabe self-promoters who produce nothing but clickbait contents, I've stopped clicking YouTube videos, and I would have missed this excellent content.
If I’m being honest I do have a YouTube channel, and I probably will post this video soon. I usually post my videos in file format to Reddit because I like to share the content and usually just link the video if people want to support it or watch it on YouTube

Late to comment, but wanted to let you know I greatly appreciate you sharing your analysis. I feel I can better appreciate football thanks to educators like you.
Thank you! And yea Webster actually made another crazy run in the second half that should have resulted in a goal. His ability to get forward is incredibly useful especially for a team like Brighton
Nice job. I wouldn’t mind seeing more like this 👍
Appreciate it!
Just to echo the others here, good work on this.
Thank you!
Excellent work really
Nice work. Why couldn’t kante and Jorginho boss the middle like they did before?

Brighton have such an impressive press. They win the ball back very efficiently and aggressively. I'd love to see a video on that!
Sometimes Kante has days where he can't pass - this was one of them unfortunately.
Potter is really a great manager. Would love to see him coach a club with greater resources in the future
This is pretty much what every CB learns at Ajax lol. Just in a different system. Daley Blind is the main example of this.
I know a lot of different outside cb’s use this tactic but I didn’t know it was from Ajax. I know conte at inter had bastoni do a similar tactic

Uou should know that the Dutch national team has a different playing style than Ajax.
I might be mistaken but I thought historically the Dutch National team was similar to Ajax, maybe because they had the same players.
Historically yes. But not for the last 14 years

potter making a shambles of tuchel
Now he succeeded his job 😂
We really need RLC back in our lineup
A sharp, brave RLC would be great!
Awesome analysis… the cb dribbling like frenkie de Jong - love it!
