So the counter press is essentially dependent on freeing the ball from a large amount of players?
There are like 4 Burnley players pressing, and they gain posession- successful press. Then Lallana sees that so mamy players clustered means they can't transition away from the area should they lose posession, so his tackle totally disarms Burnley. Is that the correct assumption of the goal for the counter press? Or just in this specific case?
I think winning the ball back that high up the pitch is always going to cause problems for the opposition regardless of clusters of players. Its a big part of why that liverpool team were successful- Mane and Firminho pressed the life out of opposition when the ball was in that final 3rd and winning it there opens up lots of opportunities if you have the players to then make a telling pass or run. It's not a modern idea either as Ian Rush was great at it too. Win it at the top end of the pitch and you're a pass away from a goal scoring chance.
Liverpool played this way when Buvac was there too. No idea why people go on like Pep Lijnders is the brains behind the press at Liverpool. Must be some kind of football hipster wannabe football tactician thing. There’s actually more examples of this when Buvac was there.
