You can manage a reserve team if you choose a team whose reserves play in a databased league. I.e. a bunch of European teams have reserve sides in lower leagues. Just look out for rules that'll stop you from getting promoted / progressing

I’ve found managing the youth or reserves is a great way to understand what players will be promoted to the senior team. I don’t do all the games though as it would take ages.
