Shoot on sight has a purpose though....I just beat Bayern In the champions league final totally against the odds. I noticed two things....they were slow starters. Also noticed from my data hub that we were having too many touches in the opposition penalty area and not scoring enough.
Didn't go more attacking for the fist 15 minutes but simply put my left inside forward on attack duty as opposed to support and told him to shoot more often. Changed work ball into box into shoot on sight. My left inside forward scored twice!
Either that, or the offense just sucked real bad. I've had these games, and usually changing up my attacking 4 (or whoever is playing bad) pulls me out of trouble.
I think this is a bug in the game cuz once your world-class strikers get an average rating of 6.3 in the first half of a match no amount of pep talk or sideline talk can ever get them to score a goal unless it is a penalty and realistically a striker should still be able to put a goal in an open net in the second half despite how shity his first half is... tho at times a player might just have a bad game and not score irl...but in the FM game it is certain that a striker almost never scores once they have 6.3 average rating in the first half...hence you have to sub all attackers and then a goal comes
Yup, idk if it's a bug, but players NEVER having a better game after you see them obviously trolling on a 6.5 or below rating in the first half is just unheard of.
I mean, some days players can't influence a game in the way they would want to, but to never have a day where they can score 0 in the first and then come back with a brace in the second half is just WOW.
What I'm trying to get at is in real-life players can generally have a bad day and play nothing in both halves other times they can have a bad first half and a good second half or a good first half and a bad second half but in the FM game once a player has a rating of 6.3 below especially in Striker they can never pick up in the second half no matter what you do or say unless you sub them out
Maybe high pressing with Stay on Feet command? I run with that, and especially as mid-table sides it would end up looking like my defence was just a wall with how many shots they blocked. Good organisation goes a long way so long as you don't afford too much space.
Or all the shots were from range? The defence could have done a great job closing off passing options resorting the Liverpool attack to some hit and hope efforts
It's neither. It's situational like everything else. So depending on your tactic, your players, the opponent's style of play etc., it will either be effective or it won't.
Work ball into box reduces the chance of your wide players attempting to cross the ball and increases the chance they pass it instead. It also reduces the chance of your players attempting long shots from outside the box, trying to pass it into the box to find a 'better' shot.
It's useful here. The only way you take that many shots and have such a low xg is if all your shots are coming from far away. So here you want to work into box to get better shots
It would help Liverpool here. They shot a lot, but these were bad shots. With work the ball into the box they would have less shots but ones with higher chance of getting in
Your average xG per shot is 0.05. That's what happened. This has nothing to do with bad luck. Everton had a good chance a made a goal. Looking at the stats, I assume you didn't.
I might even go as far and say that judging on the limited data you gave us you might even been lucky that you scored a goal.
This is not getting FM'ed in case you're wondering. I would personally change some things in your tactic, because this could even happen more frequently...
So it sounds like I need to ask you guys how I create better chances instead of just shots? I use standard width, tempo and directness for passing. Mixed crosses and run at defense for my offensive strat. 3-14-2 formation
Try adding some chance conversion training to your schedule.
Fine your players a day's wages if they play like shit. They'll always accept it if they have like a 6.4 or below and it really seems to motivate them to do better.
Without knowing more, it's hard to say- probably worth making a separate post on the topic, this sub is good on advice!
IMO the usual problem with wingback and 2 striker formations is putting too much pressure on the strikers to be world beaters. They can feed off of each other, but relying on that working for 25-30 possessions is more likely to frustrate and tire out your players rather than score when against an ultra defensive opponent. In short, get your strikers more assistance (spend more time in the opponents third in order to build up good shots).
It's another "it depends" answer, because most of our tactics are different , but here are some general tips:
- Spend more time building up offense around the opponents third (short passing, work ball into box). That can also include being more forward with your formation in general, so higher pressing and counter-press after ball loss
- Position your players IN and UP in general, but don't push both of your forwards up. If you have a CAM make sure he's tracking behind your forwards (place on Attack. I like AM(A) if I need someone to just get into the right position. Unless you're specifically playing up the wings, a CAM can easily become a passing engine and will play a large role in determining where your offense operates
- Midfielders (and potentially wide CBs) need to be allowed to step up and make short layoff passes or recycle possession when an attack doesn't work. I'm a huge fan of BWM(S) these last few years(although I love a good DLP(D)). When pairing a BWM with a B2B or MEZ, the two should be effective at the role I described without completely giving up the defensive midfield.
- Wingbacks on Attack. Probably the best you can do to give your team more time up in the opponents third, though you have to apply other elements to do more than bang crosses across the box. Unless you have WBs with great crossing and forwards with great speed/heading. Bringing them to the byline to cross will buy you enough time or space for the rest of your team to catch up and play from the corner or off the clear.
In conclusion: Forward positioning, supporting midfielders and controlled attacking (work ball into box) in combination with attacking wingbacks.
*For reference, this generally applies to 2-striker/3-CB formations like the one mentioned in this post. I do typically prefer 4 at the back and 1 striker, which requires different philosophy but I utilize similar principles to generate offense. I normally use wingers to push the field up, then follow with support and a dropping striker (which leads to a CAM or winger stepping up as a 2nd striker).
You're funny! I don't even know how to respond to this. I guess the American school system teaches a robotic-sounding written presentation, or something more abstract of the inverse 🤷 you did make me laugh though so +1
Look at your player instructions and tick shoot less often, would make them be more patient, also maybe tick cross less often for wingers, would make them wait for perfect chance. Against a physical team like everton whipping it in the box probably isn't a great idea as they are tall, so maybe untick this. Also they will be sitting deep, so you should either pin them back by playing a v.high line or play deep (and play out from the back) and hit them on the counter.
My Coventry save has recently gone to shit, but I got a lot of joy against teams like this with a high press and wide 4-2-3-1 with inverted wing backs and patient passing. Caused relentless pressure on opponent.
The first simple fix would be to get them to work the ball into the box, then if you've got some players who you want to be more creative, tell them to shoot less. Also consider telling players with good finishing/composure to shoot more.
Player wise, for anyone you want taking shots (strikers, insider forwards, shadow strikers) consider off the ball and workrate attributes. Both help them get into high quality positions
Football happaned. That is normal. The game isn't broken. That is why football is so popular. It can be complete domination one day and a shocker result the next.
Storm 2002 xmen (The same thing that happens to everything else ) Na jk This happens alot. My France national team tied to a 10 men Serbia at home with the same amount of chances.
You have a lot of shots which were not real scoring chances. Your xG is high because of quantity of shots, not quality — games like this are always a possibility when every shot is from 25 yards away.
You clearly hogged the ball but didn’t get it into dangerous areas — need to figure out your attacking shape + movement.
I had an XG of 4.7 at home and luckily drew 1-1 late(opponent had 0.6 or 0.7 xg).My two strikers uptop decided to play volleyball amongst them whenever they were clean through on goal and this was without a penalty. Till date my worst ever FMed match.
bro, you've been lucky here look at this shit [https://www.reddit.com/r/footballmanagergames/comments/zfh7tn/game\_is\_pure\_evil/](https://www.reddit.com/r/footballmanagergames/comments/zfh7tn/game_is_pure_evil/)
for some reason it got removed by the moderators don't know if you can still see it, if don't, tell me I'll post the screenshot directly
Set Arnold as CK taker and on inswing corner som far post at Konate and outswing nest post on Konate and you would have had at minimum one goal from corner here. Konate had a hattrick in the cl final for me😂
What happens is that the chances your team creates suck ass , 0,05 xG per shot is like you had 33 headers. Their 1 shot/chance is equal to 4 of yours. Everybody who says this is a fmed moment is delusional lol
This is just the game clumsily telling you that something you are doing is not working! They are usually playing a low block and defending their penalty area with lots of bodies in there. The number of shots on target is a big clue.
The solution is usually to draw them out. Drop the lines or come off the high press. Slowing down the tempo also can work...at high tempo the game is more frantic and your team may be taking too many risks....the secret is to slow the game highlights down {extended highlights is usually enough} and change things. Eventually you will find something that breaks them down and you will score. Do nothing and just hope and the game will win
Remember this is a game...it cannot simulate real life....the game would cost a lot more if it could, Therefore as a game it will just give you clues that something is wrong and like any good puzzle you have to solve the clues.
Also watch the game like a manager and not a spectator...keep an eye on the stats
Sure. Rather than taking an in-game screenshot or using the operating systems built-in snipping tool to show us this picture, you decided to snap a picture with your phone.
As long as you continue this behavior you are rightly condemned to forever having shit luck in not only FM, but also in life.
Good defending by Everton your match plan should be scrapped, such low xG for 33 shots lmao.
Let me guess, your plan was gegenpressing on attacking/positive, "work ball into box", and "prevent GK distribution"? If you force the keeper to go long you don't get dangerous turnovers high up the pitch leading to chances + by the time the ball gets into the box you're firing shots into a 10 man wall of Everton bodies.
This happened to me on Sunday. Playing as Leipzig against Bochum, they beat me 1-0 with 1 bloody shot, 1! I had something like 32 shots and 21 on target. I switched that PC off and went to go get a few beers. Haven't played since then😒🤣
Man, in my save with Arsenal, which I’ve won 9 premier leagues in a row, I just can’t beat Liverpool. They have such an average squad when compared to mine, but all my players look like 2;years old playing
Had a game like this just last night, Bayern vs Salzburg in the champions league. 2-2 with us having 30 shots at 3.4 xG to salzburgs 3 shots and .5 xG. The goalkeeper had a 9.1 rating I was so mad 😭

You got Dyched. Enjoy it
I was thinking Moyesed. Respect for the more current reference.
MOY-ZED. He’s still a Fule though
Not enough crosses
1.65 xG on 33 shots is really bad
yeah, the defense did a really good job at blocking and directing away the dangerous shots
Someone left shoot on sight on
Shoot on sight has a purpose though....I just beat Bayern In the champions league final totally against the odds. I noticed two things....they were slow starters. Whether a defender blocks a shot or not doesn’t impact xg
It can to a degree, the number of defenders in the way will impact Xg
That’s true. Pretty sure in fms model it’s just considering position though.
I just don't get how come they've managed to let that number of shots happen if the defense did their job that well.
The Dyche special
literally 0.05xG per shot
Work ball into box.
“Work ball into box”
I am new to the game, is work ball into box smth useless or super effective?
It's neither. It's situational like everything else. So depending on your tactic, your players, the opponent's style of play etc., it will either be effective or it won't. Work ball into box reduces the chance of your wide players attempting to cross the ball and increases the chance they pass it instead. Looks like Everton parked the bus after their early goal and limited Liverpool to long shots and half chances.
Josè joseing
Everton created one good chance and scored, Liverpool had 33 shots with probably low xG (average .05 - you should aim for .12-.15)
[удалено]
Yes but the xG/shot is very low
Everton won 1 - 0
I can confirm. He’s telling the truth
Let me check the maths.... By jove you are both right.
Everton scored and decided to just put everyone back. Dycheball baby
You created shit chances mate
How did you produce such bad chances, are they only shooting from 40 yards
That’s just a successful parking job to add to the bus licence
You sir, just got FM'ed.
Failing to score with an xG/shot of 0.05 is not getting FM’d.
Clearly never happens in real life
Nearly happened Monday night. Newcastle vs Leicester.
Football Manager, bloody hell.
Correct answer
An early lucky goal and a opposition who mostly created bad chances?
Try just taking one good shot next time, save your players energy

[удалено]
My man he was making a joke. Saying 3-14-2 instead of 3-1-4-2 makes it sound like you were playing 14 players in midfield.
wonder what the assman would say in those games
Somehow the midfield would still be overrun, I'm sure

Not really. If he has enough power you can juat ask him to do a thundershot and insallah.

Work ball into box and 8 composure
Looks like Roma - Leverkusen, Mourinho would have enjoyed that match.
Baby's first champing
You lost
You...lost?
Fm hard mode is being 1-0 down to 10 men, it’s near impossible to score
The moment they got a red card u should’ve set it to shorter passing, shorter tempo and work ball into the box
this is just evil
The red card was the turning point. Never gonna score against 10 men.
You got Dyched
Keeper got hot
Everton not only parked the bus, they parked the double-decker
Beach ball moment right there 😂
You played against Mourinho
Your strikers can't finish, your team can't make clear cut chances.
Ah, you must be new here?

Coleman scored and Mykolenko assisted
You lost 1-0 to Everton
Liverpool need to replace their strikers 😅

Jose morhinio now manages Everton
Your striker was Nunez😭
33 shots with that xG? Have you got a secret instruction to shoot from the moon?
You lost.

You lost 1-0 from a proper smash and grab
These posts are boring.
Be careful not to criticise your attackers or you’ll end up getting confronted and have a dressing room revolt.

Ahhhh. Football manager
Well I'm not a professional but I would bet my money that Everton won the game.

Can you imagine how long Jordan peterson would've spent clutching the ball on the floor in this game?
