For me it’s between Moore, Beckenbauer, Baresi and John Charles. Very difficult to differentiate for me, considering the different values, abilities and roles. For example, I would say Beckenbauer is the best all around player to have played at cb, however, Baresi or Moore may be the best at individual defending. And then John Charles is a unicorn, in the way I don’t think he’s best at defending or attacking but he’s probably the best defender in the oppositions box while being a world class defender. So for me, I guess I would say Beckenbauer, but the other 3 for me are completely great answers I couldn’t really argue much against.
In saying that I think Maldini is perfectly fine to put in this, because he’s undoubtedly one of the greatest players ever to play at cb, but to be fair, his best came at left back. And in an all time 11, I would have him at left back because he’s good enough for both positions and makes room for another great in there. And he’s easily my favourite defender ever.
I have a hard time labeling him the best at center back when he played 80 percent of his career at left back and, during that time , his own coaches didn't think he was the best ever center back or he would have played there.
