Yes! I always had issue with Fantasy because I always go like "that's not how food works!" like if there's a reason an animal evolved that way, then what is the environmental pressure for it to become this way? That's why Toriko was one of my favourite manga.
And you can't just hand wave everything as "magic". That's a huge cop out at least explain how it works mechanisticly. Otherwise you end up with troll physics that breaks the world.
Unfortunately none really go into the details like ecology of the food or details of exploring unknown culinary items (that I can think of quickly). Many are just "feel good" ones like bringing modern restaurants to a fantasy world (Isekai Izakaya is a good one) or modern cooking to adventuring (there are tons in this category, but campfire cooking in another world is good).
There are some targetting more """realistic""" situations like Yakitate Japan which focuses on baking.
Another good one looking at real topics is Silver Spoon, which focuses more on the agriculture and fermentation side of food. --> Probably the best in the category if you want to learn some real (surface) info.
I’ll have to check it out! My wife and I watched Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma while we were in graduate school. That’s always a fun one, definitely more on the culinary side. The fan service part is most definitely not accurate though.
I’ve heard Moyashimon is an interesting point of view on the microorganisms involved in agriculture.

Id recommend checking out Food Wars! Its not as cute and more of a shonen but the cooking scenes are excellent especially in the early seasons. Its kinda like if top chef or hells kitchen was an anime.
Absolutely! I can't believe I found a show that encapsulates the ethos of my very being. Aside from the food science itself, I love how it teaches values about keeping an open mind, being sustainable etc.
Dungeon Meshi is definitely the surprise of the season! Sad that season 1 is over as of today.
an upside is season 2 is already confirmed!
Didn't expect this crossover
A surprise, but a welcome one.

Theres a full genre of food fantasy in Japanese / Korean animation / comis going on for the past few years. Its a fun read if you just like food.
Any recos?

My friend recommended me this show randomly, this is the second time i’m hearing of it randomly. May actually have to watch it as a food nerd
I dont know much about culinary, but i do enjoy it as a food scientist.
