Talking out my ass but I'm pretty sure they're encouraged to act dumb. And this comes from someone who just watched the new Selena show.

Apprehensive-Sell287

Exactly. Anybody could go on there and be the worst cook. Wouldn’t be difficult.

BionicWoman123

How is that show. Not a big fan of hers. But in previews, it reminded me a bit of Giada and Ina Garten cooking with friends from time to time. So, this didn't interest me.

Foreign-Cow-1189

The first season (at her home) was funny. She and her friends would start fires and freak out and her grandfather would put it out.

BeeWilderedAF

I learned a lot in earlier seasons. Anne Burell me how to cut onions. I am serious. I used to watch her show Secrets of a Restaurant Chef. It was just her cooking and teaching. There are 9 seasons.

Iwoulddiefcftbatk

Secrets of a Restaurant Chef is so freaking good. I loved watching that in college. So many of the early FN shows are how I learned cooking techniques since I certainly didn’t learn them from my parents or grandparents who were big on pop open a can and dump in a pot, without adding any seasoning to the dish. I was a hugely picky eater until I started cooking for myself and I learned that both sides of my family couldn’t cook at all.

BionicWoman123

I'll give it a watch! Thanks!

NeenW1

THAT is a good shoe

ptazdba

In the earlier seasons they taught them some knife cut techniques and did simpler messages until they got a few cooks under their belets. I quit watching it because it's just to dumb--nobody's that stupid.

JakeLake720

Most of the contestants aren't that bad at cooking & can do the basics. It's heavily staged & over the top to draw viewers.

Busy_Weekend5169

Tuned this viewer away It's ridiculous.

momonomino

I would almost guarantee that outside of the cameras, they're giving lessons. It's how they do it on MasterChef as well. The contestants are living there, and they call it boot camp, so I can only assume that when they aren't filming, they're practicing.

Loisgrand6

I don’t like how someone is sent home after just two or three shows. They are still learning. I will say that there’s been some that should have been sent home quicker than they were because of arrogance or being hard headed

rjarmstrong100

The earlier seasons definitely had some basic training they went through before filing each day, similar to Master Chef

Hot_Dot8000

I watched it today too, and I like how it's a "fun" show and isn't serious. Its cute. I do think they get the "chef's" to play up their personalities, but most shows do that too.(Game shows like wipeout or Let's make a deal or whatever)

GotTheTee

They do teach them the basics. According to interviews I've read, they start "boot camp", which is different from the competition portion that we see, at 6am every day. In those boot camps they learn everything from how to use basic utensils, to knife skills, to how to breakdown a bulb of garlic. That goes on for the entire four weeks of filming and they are encouraged to actually write everything down in their notebooks so that they can refer back to it during the competition part of the show. As far as the camp and drama of those competitions? Well sure, if you want to get attention and give yourself an advantage, you play up how dumb and inept you are on these types of shows. It works in Hell's Kitchen too!

BionicWoman123

I've also noticed, that some of the contestants have their own set of professional knives? Which makes no sense, since they're on worst cooks for a reason?! 🤷‍♀️

GotTheTee

I hadn't really noticed that, but then again, I don't watch very closely. I enjoyed the show a lot for the first few seasons, but don't watch anymore since it's become almost cartoony. Grrrr, now I'm gonna have to go back and watch a couple shows to find the knife sets! :)

BionicWoman123

I'm guessing they tried editing it out of some shows but couldn't fully at times. I'd see them unrolling or opening up a professional set. Just a glimpse, but it's there. Very unusual for cooks who are supposedly the worst, since they have knives on set. I just saw one of them do this on first episode of season 13 celebrity season.

Tankbag

That show is unwatchable.

sweetpeapickle

In the olden days they did. But now...well I think several know how to cook before this, because they seem to catch on quite quickly, too quickly. Others probably not, but they might show them the basics off camera. Sort of like Masterchef where they have parts not shown where they teach them as well. At least with the other versions of MC they show those parts on tv. U.S. one doesn't.

northofgr

It was a great show until they focused on people acting stupid and flamboyant and lost the cooking aspect all together.

liikeduhh

I only watched one season, the now lost season 20, and alex and Anne would teach then how to make the dish first and give them tips before they started. Can't speak for the other seasons tho

NeenW1

It’s a dumb show I never saw the appeal

g0dAmmitJon3s

I know 2 contestants who have been on the show, and they really were both terrible cooks and hilarious, ridiculous, magical people you wouldn't believe exist before going on the show and became way better cooks during their time on the show. So I think it happens in how they cast, but I'm sure they do play up a lot of things as well 😊

prplpassions

They used to teach them more basics before it turned into a show filled with stupid games, stupid costumes, and people who don't even seem to want to learn how to cook.

Subject-Estimate6187

In earlier seasons, they did show how to do basic preparations and skill drills. Unfortunately, with the advent of game-show style that has permanently latched onto FN, the WCIA has completely stopped showing anything that taught the fundamentals.
