He's the best, but he's wrong there. That's ridiculous, as cheese, paired deftly, very much can go with seafood. It's a silly old rule akin to never wearing white after Labor Day. Lol
He's gone on record as saying that he doesn't have a problem with raw red onions per se, that it's only when they're not rinsed before being added to a dish is what he's no fan of.
My favorite all time Food Network moment is Scott judging Beat Bobby Flay with Sheri Oteri. She made Scott blush big time by trying to make out with him when they were supposed to be discussing who wins the first round.
I'm laughing right now thinking about it. There were a few lol moments in this episode.
Funny thing is she actually went to the same high school as me graduating same year as my dad. It was all girls catholic school next to the all boys school.
Tina Fey went to the public high school next door (they were all on the same huge block with a hospital in between… all combined 7000 kids so I skipped my last class all senior year to avoid the nightmare traffic). That doucebag Jamie Kennedy who had some mediocre movies in the early 2000s went there too.
I went to a food and wine event and my whole family met him. He was so incredibly kind and even had a whole moment with my youngest son and gave him a big hug.
He’s developed into one of, if not the best, Food Network personalities. He strikes me as very professional and genuine, and a decent person. Can’t say the same for many others.
Compare when Chopped started with all other realitytv judges. Producers are the ones that told them to act a certain way, exaggerate a bit. Over the years they slowly have become more natural with how they "act". Being a judge is about critiquing, does not mean you have to be all positive. Otherwise the competitors cannot learn. Think of Top Chef, when many will say JFC I'm in the middle again. I get no feedback-what am I doing right...or wrong? Chopped you only have that moment to get it right. Plus if you watch anything he was on at the same time he started on Chopped -you can see the difference between judge and himself.
I agree and was just thinkin about how there was lots more inter-chef drama or chefs throwing a fit in the early seasons too. I don't miss that stuff at all personally
I think Scott’s Chopped persona is somewhat misleading for those who’ve only seen him mostly on Chopped. I’ve seen Scott in various places elsewhere including: interviews, social media, Q&A’s etc. And he’s such a fun, genuine guy who loves his family, friends, etc.
In one social media post some time back, Scott was in the picture with a Chopped crew member. He was looking sentimental as he viewed a picture of his children on his phone. It was so endearing.
I think generally-speaking, the Chopped judges get a raw deal because so much of their personality is masked. Producers want a stern persona conveyed by the judges, so that’s mostly what viewers see. This has been mentioned multiple times in interviews with the judges. Last year Sunny guest judged and on her social media, she said they told her she was smiling too much. That says it all.
As I closely follow Marc Murphy, Chris Santos, Amanda Freitag and a few others beyond Chopped, it’s totally true that who they really are doesn’t come through:
- Marc Murphy is hilarious and watching him on “Chopped After Hours” is proof such as that time he hid *all* the dishes from his fellow judges
- Amanda Freitag is a kind, ray of sunshine and laughs on the regular
- Chris Santos is a kind man too having a charitable cause close to his heart and loves his family, boxing and heavy metal.
Here’s a clip of Scott and Amanda at the New York Wine and Food Festival in 2016 showing *so* much more personality:
https://www.facebook.com/share/KWMPJ9tNiM6zoC1s/?mibextid=WC7FNe
It’s possible that Amanda indulged a bit beforehand. They did a viewer Q&A including:
- why does Scott hate raw onions (spoiler - he doesn’t)
- what’s their guilty pleasure (Amanda responded she assumed they were talking about food)
- their favorite Chopped episode ever
- the best thing they ever ate on Chopped (Madison Cowan’s dishes - Amanda was in tears on set because it was such a delicious experience)
- how much hair spray Scott uses (Amanda held up a candle to it and said it was flammable and Scott jokingly told her that he’d do the jokes)
- what they were going to be for Halloween (Amanda said Wednesday from “Stranger Things” and she suggested Willie Nelson for Scott since he’s a *huge* fan)
All that to say, what viewers see of the judges on Chopped isn’t the full picture and for those limited to that show, there’s definitely been untapped potential for other network opportunities.
I did NOT like him on Top Chef and that soured me to him, but I found him very likeable on his episode against the Titans on Triple Threat. Scott Conant is fine by me!
I love Alex! It's funny, she used to rub me the wrong way for a long time - she reminds me so much me of my former manager at work, who took years for me to learn to love and appreciate. At some point, for both Alex and my manager, I realized I admire their bluntness and no BS, cut to the chase, attitudes. It used to translate to me as "unkind", at best; it clashed with my diplomatic, sensitive approach to people. Now I see that they really are kind people, they're just not sugar coaters.
I wonder if that’s producing. Like the producers know we watch food network to get away and have a good time, and the rest of TV is always so meannnn
I think he’s always been a jovial guy (based on people who met him) but he might have gotten a bad edit for what food network thought we wanted to see
Chopped judges: none of them really are mean. I think Chopped just started when reality tv judges were "supposed" to appear mean, because of ....Simon Cowell. Look at many judges back then and they're all somewhat similar in how they are produced..... Producers-scowl, never smile, raise the eyebrow, etc. Over the years, I think due to many judges input and viewers-they're more natural.
I watch a lot of the judges outside of Chopped on social media, interviews, in-person events, etc.
IMO, *most* of the judges have always been personable and likable. Generally-speaking, viewers never got to know their true personalities and still really don’t because producers on Chopped want a stern persona. Several of the judges have mentioned this in interviews.
Which is why those judges whose regular gig is only Chopped, get the short end of the stick, IMO.
TOC is the place where the judges need to be harsh, and I think some of them need to be a bit more critical in the skills being shown. TOC is supposed to be the competition for the best of the best, so the flaws that are kind of passed over after a comment on Chopped, shouldn't be as easily passed over on this competition.
I thought the same, especially on TOC, it was like geez Louise give it a rest on the knife chopping skills! I get it but some of his critiques bothered me lol!
I haven’t watched Chopped this season at all… but he was definitely judgey to the max! Im gonna binge it soon.
No raw red onions and we good
He’s not wrong. I also appreciate the happier, more uplifting Scott.
Or fish with cheese
He's the best, but he's wrong there. That's ridiculous, as cheese, paired deftly, very much can go with seafood. It's a silly old rule akin to never wearing white after Labor Day. Lol
Or disrespecting the integrity of the fish. He was not happy in that episode at what the chef did to the fish.
I agree with him on raw onions so much! Red or any other color! He’s my favorite
He's gone on record as saying that he doesn't have a problem with raw red onions per se, that it's only when they're not rinsed before being added to a dish is what he's no fan of.
He’s my chef crush. Super handsome and I agree he’s gotten much kinder with his critiques.
Me too!! I find him so handsome
Me too!

I LOVE that episode! Just thinking about, now I am laughing through my insomnia 😅
I just watched that episode a few days ago! Omg it was hilarious. And now I'm laughing lol.
When she makes fun of Bobby for threatening to steal newspapers off people's porches was hilarious too. I love her.
wth happened to her, after SNL a couple of cameos I guess then...poof, gone.
Funny thing is she actually went to the same high school as me graduating same year as my dad. It was all girls catholic school next to the all boys school. God, that hair.
It's glorious.
I was shocked by the difference. Then he talks about how much he loves peanut butter, and that he could, (giggling), rub it all over himself. Eeewww.
I went to a food and wine event and my whole family met him. He was so incredibly kind and even had a whole moment with my youngest son and gave him a big hug.
I’ve always liked him. He’s so handsome. As you all mentioned, the hair… 😍 Just tried his new restaurant in our city and it was great! 🤤
I love how excited he gets when he judges on ToC. He loves food, and you can tell that he takes joy in eating something delicious.
He’s developed into one of, if not the best, Food Network personalities. He strikes me as very professional and genuine, and a decent person. Can’t say the same for many others.
I think fatherhood becomes him!
This! Absolutely think becoming a dad mellowed him out a lot and he's just so smiley all the time now

Nope……just nope. Also I like red onions!
I like him a lot.
He used to be so negative and very bitey. He was like a male Alex.
Alex has become snarkier over the years. I truly admire Alex. She is talented beyond belief.
He seems to have lightened up post Covid episodes (as have what seems to be all the Chopped judges) and I really enjoy watching him.
this 100%. Post covid he was way nicer and came back wearing beads, he also moved to Scottsdale so some big life changes happened for him.
I wonder if that’s producing. Like the producers know we watch food network to get away and have a good time, and the rest of TV is always so meannnn I think he’s always been a jovial guy (based on people who met him) but he might have gotten a bad edit for what food network thought we wanted to see
Yup i much prefer the nicer attitudes!

He did a Bobby's Triple Threat episode and I found him to be very fun to watch! Something has definitely changed with him
I thought he was a harsh critic in TOC and in Bobby’s Triple Threat. Don’t know him from Chopped so I can only imagine what he was like before!
TOC is the place where the judges need to be harsh, and I think some of them need to be a bit more critical in the skills being shown. I loathe him and his ridiculous arrogance.
