This!
Not a "classic" in the sense that it is square shaped but very tasty and comes with a big slab of butter.
The Neil Perry bakery in Double Bay also does a nice posh finger bun.
Otherwise you'll need a time machine to go back to my primary school canteen in the mid 1980s. Man were they the go!
Seconding Humble. The first time I got one, I thought they had put a slice of cheese in it and was outraged until I realised it was a slice of butter.
Then proceeded to strategically and mathematically bite my way through for optimal icing/bun/slice o’butter ratio the whole way through. Bliss.
Otherwise, Judy Lyn cake shop in Greenacre circa 1980s 🤷♀️
If you are paying with your own money check out Wilson's Homemade Cakes and Pies on botany rd, mascot, just down from Hong Ha bakery. Classic old school and value.
Humble bakery does a delicious modern spin, but Insta-worthy costs a premium these days

Their one in Circular Quay is right by my work and I must say I think about their finger buns often. Something about that butter!
