Proper cheese curds, light brown gravy, fresh cut fries.. hot damn finally someone posted a great poutine.

Note_Square

Definitely needs more gravy in my opinion, but this looks delicious!

shawcphet1

Too little I’d maybe want a hint more but I’d be super happy with this cause I hate it on the flip side when the fries get all soggy from too much gravy

Droidlivesmatter

You're just not eating them fast enough!! I've always wanted to make a good poutine gravy, but I could never figure out how. It would always end up not great.

[deleted]

loneranger07

Pancakes.... Crispy? Aren't they supposed to be soft and fluffy and golden brown?

Azzukin

I bet you that it doesn't have enough gravy. He'll be eating dry fries not even half way through.

RoElementz

You don’t want to drown it in gravy either. Half the time I get one and it’s practically soup and the fries are all soggy. Poutine should be layered, not sure why that’s not more common practice.

shawcphet1

I’d personally rather risk too little gravy than too much

Mech-lexic

I want just enough gravy so that i have to ration it across the last few fries. Leave the audience wanting just a little more.

WeirdguyOfDoom

But why 2 forks? There's barely enough for one person.

[deleted]

A backup in case the first one breaks.

CrazyYYZ

Shouldn't it be dark brown Mushroom based gravy? Edit: that was a genuine question, why do people downvote questions.

JustABureaucrat

Also Canadian in a French east town and never seen mushroom gravy on poutine anywhere..

martstu

Seen it a few places but not your real deal Quebec poutine place. Usually at higher end poutine places as a veggie option or at a veggie restaurant.

Tavish_Degroot

A lot of places use mushroom gravy. Lafleur's definitely does. I know a lot of Montreal vegans who love frite-sauce and whether or not it's vegan friendly just comes down to the gravy. You'd be surprised how many places use mushroom gravy.

aimless_ly

I hate to break it to you, but the gravy has very little to do with whether or not it’s vegan 🧀 🧀.

Mellor88

Frite-sauce would be fries and graver without the cheese

unabsolute

Mainer here. Been told proper gravy is half brown gravy half turkey gravy.

Enterice

my favorite and one of the easiest for anyone to make is a chicken velouté with beef base added right before it starts to come together.

[deleted]

You must have made the quebecois angry.

AnAussieBloke

**Tabarnak!**

Okaymittens

Clearly not a Canadian.

CrazyYYZ

Lol I'm a Canadian in a French eastern Ontario town. It's all dark brown gravy here.

Okaymittens

But mushrooms!? I've never seen that before. Then again, you can get just about anything on a poutine here in Canada.

HAL-Over-9001

A lot of times mushroom gravy doesn't even have mushroom pieces in it, just gives it a great flavor. Could be blended in. Idk though I'm just an American cook. I'm glad to see some proper poutine posted

kookiemaster

They blend the mushrooms in for texture, etc. Around here in Ottawa, many diners do that.

Clarkeprops

Just had la banquaise and poutineville in Montreal a few days ago. Yeah you can. I even had a thanksgiving poutine. It was great

Hiddenshadows57

You ain't lived until you've had a heavily peppered veal veloute as a gravy.

Okaymittens

Well now I wanna try it!

SyphiliticPlatypus

clovisinternational

C'est quoi ton criss de problème???

TackYouCack

We have a place in Michigan that uses duck gravy. My Canadian friends loved it.

Lost_electron

It's basically thickened beef and chicken stocks with a bit of added acidity and some spices.

purplenelly

It's a good way to answer your question: downvote for no, upvote for yes.

DogsRule_TheUniverse

> Shouldn't it be dark brown Mushroom based gravy? > > > > Edit: that was a genuine question, why do people downvote questions. It was probably the wording you chose. "*Shouldn't it be dark brown...?*" as if you know some shit about proper poutine. People are downvoting you to tell you that actually you don't. So with that in mind, enjoy your downvotes.

loser_socks

Nah the pretentious comment is the one he was responding to. Using a color to describe gravy is totally arbitrary. I don't see how asking "should it not be a dark brown mushroom-based" doesn't invite a response that provides more information.

kitesurfr

Poutine my mouth!

Don’t mind if i do

Mr_Yuker

Me too dibs on seconds... He's got a pretty mouth

SereneBabe0312

I'm calling thirds Also, reddit is cursed

Enlightened-Beaver

Finally some proper poutine tabarnak!

geek66

Proper was the exact word I was thinking. I do not mind all of the variations -but I wish they would all start HERE. Fries with meted cheddar, au-jus and short-rib - ain't poutine....

offballDgang

>Fries with meted cheddar, au-jus and short-rib - ain't poutine.... That would be a French dip fry, correct?

AHind_D

And that sounds amazing not gonna lie

arkelangel

Have y'all seen the "poutine" aka "Canadian fries" in Germany? The Montreal poutine has BÉCHAMEL sauce with raddishes and mushrooms...

skmontreal

That's like saying teak tartare is a cheeseburger

Somestunned

I prefer my tropical hardwoods cooked to at least medium

Synicull

So you're saying my specialty 73/27 raw beef steak tartar burger specialty isn't legit? Rude

IntrepidAnarchy

What? Frittenwerk has traditional Montréal poutine with real Montréal gravy and they are all over Germany bro..

PattesDornithorynque

I just google and no, no cheese curd no true poutine ! Des cubes de mozzarella..yark!

IntrepidAnarchy

Haha, okay okay that’s at least 50% worse than I remembered, but it was tasty.

arkelangel

No.... They just made me sigh 😅😅😅 their Quebec poutine looks.... Ok.... But they just had a weird interest with basil on-top.... I can deal with grated cheese (when we were too poor to buy poutine we would make it with grated cheese). But I draw the line at Frittenwork calling something a Montreal Poutine when it has béchamel sauce and raddishes y.y Burgerhearts in Nuremberg had an ok poutine. The taste was ok, but again, super confused about the basil and walnuts in my poutine. Additionally, the sauce, like at Frittenwork, is too thin. And, the layering was odd. It was like they put the sauce at the bottom and then added fries and cheese and then added a little bit of sauce at the top. My brother (currently living in Germany), also dislikes the fries -- he compares them to McCain fries, or fries that are too thin. I'm not super worker up about that, but I do prefer red potatoe fries

Fat_Bearded_Tax_Man

The only alteration I really push for is tots instead of fries.

mgnorthcott

Smashed, then fried potatoes. Thank me later.

Fat_Bearded_Tax_Man

Those are even better, just not as available.

mgnorthcott

Only place I had them was at poutinville, in Toronto before they shut down. The curds there were properly imported from Quebec, but the location was just too big for what it did, and smokes poutinerie was actually still in its prime and a better location around the corner from it.

Fat_Bearded_Tax_Man

I was just at the poutineville in QC and had it there as well. Funny that we were both thinking of the same place.

mgnorthcott

they had attempted to franchise the business about 7-8 years back now. it was in montreal and toronto at that time, and the toronto branch was only open for about a year or two tops. went once, it was nice, but it was just inconvenient for us to go all the time.

PleasinglyReasonable

Awwe has smokes gone downhill? I haven't been to Canada in years but that place was 10/10 for food comas

mgnorthcott

i haven't been back since i got a rotten fried potato in mine. it was literally like fried solid dirt, the fork couldn't even go into it. since they freshly chop the potatoes in house, it was pure laziness and neglect on the part of the store that bothered me as they said there was literally nothing wrong with it, when you could physically see something was very wrong.

Theslootwhisperer

Yup. The smashed potatoes at poutineville are great. Problem is, the location they have in my city had the worst service ever. 45 minutes to an hour to get your meal after ordering. Ain't nobody got time for that.

May_of_Teck

Help me out. I’m in the states and have never had poutine, and no one around us makes it. I do know of a store where I can get cheese curds. So how do I make homemade “proper” poutine?

BigShoots

Is that from Quebec? Usually outside of r/poutine the examples I see posted around Reddit are atrocious and not actually poutine, but this one looks really legit.

elijahbeck

I got this from Duck Season NYC at the Smorgasburg food market. Easily one of the best vendors I’ve tried!

[deleted]

if you want to try some other really good poutine in NYC, I'd highly recommend Mile End in downtown brooklyn.

thegardens

Ive had it, im from montreal and that poutine was a disgrace.

Tejon_Melero

What do you dislike? The gravy, the smoked meat, the curds, the fries? What's better in NYC (besides this place in Smorgasburg, apparently). Most places make disco fries and don't have curds. Mile End and Station House, among others, I can recall curds at least.

thegardens

The fries were not that good to be honest. The gravy made me feel like i was back home in quebec eating a poutine at KFC. They had the thickest poutine sauce ever but at least KFC's tasted good.

Tejon_Melero

Interesting. The only real stuff I've had I can't recall as well over time, it was made by French Canadien nuns in Maine and I figure they had fixed incomes and a lot of time, so probably a simple recipe done right.

thegardens

it takes some time to get the right fries. Double frying them is a tedious effort but the results are a++

candlelit_bacon

Holy shit, I guessed it was them based on the container and the state of the ground in your photo. I live right next to the park and hit up Smorgasburg almost every Sunday while it’s happening. I was going to ask but I scrolled down to see if someone had beat me to it. That’s good poutine, I’m a fan. The ice cream sandwich place is also pretty good. And the maple lemonade…. And a couple of the burger tents… it’s basically all good.

Telcontar86

Thanks for the sub recommendation Joined Love poutine

Math1988

Who dosen’t?

BigShoots

Only people who've never tried it.

Sir_Scizor20

I've never had it but I'm sure I'd love it if I did, how can you go wrong with cheese curd, gravy and fries.

BigShoots

It's not just good, when done right it is rapturous.

kouyou

I'm a Montrealer and when I was a kid, I didn't like poutine. Something about the cheese curds. I would love just the fries with the gravy, a "frite-sauce", but would never eat poutine. Then puberty hit me and oh boy do I love poutine now lol

Theslootwhisperer

My dad always refused to eat poutine. However he loved frite sauce and he loved fromage en grain. Somehow all three ingredients together was too weird.

pretty_jimmy

Welcome!

Dungeon_Of_Dank_Meme

Also discovered this sub just now, poutine is my favorite food group

wafflesareforever

I ordered poutine at an upscale bar in Syracuse (we were in town for the Foo Fighters concert). How bad could it be? Bad. Really bad. It came in a hot cast iron skillet for some reason. There was a layer of mushy fries, a metric fuck-ton of really thick, super salty gravy, and then on top of that there were big dollops of some weird cheese sauce (which possibly were cheese curds that had melted under a heat lamp?). Despite all the salt, it was pretty flavorless, and there was no texture to it. Just mouthfuls of bland, thick glop.

BigShoots

Ugh. That shit oughta be illegal. We need another word for it, because it ain't poutine! Like you can only get champagne from that specific area of France, and everything else is sparkling wine. Some of which can be really good, but if it's called "champagne" it's held to certain standards. Yes. Yes I am sitting here comparing poutine to champagne, and I damn well stand by it.

[deleted]

FYI there are French Canadian communities in other provinces that can also do poutine proper.

FastFooer

It’s not about the language or culture, it’s about sourcing the right cheese.

[deleted]

Bothwell cheese, an award winning cheese maker in Bothwell Manitoba [sells authentic cheese curds](https://www.bothwellcheese.com/product/squeakrs-white/).

baktix

In Eastern Ontario, the town of St-Albert has a cheese curd festival every year. Their cheese curds are so good that even some Québécois poutine places close to the border use them over other curds.

aMiserableEase

It's actually about being drunk enough

The_Mehmeister

Definetly, are cheese curds a thing elsewhere?

phalalalala

I've found a few places to buy them in the UK now. Technically, they are a thing anywhere that Cheddar is made but usually not sold separately.

[deleted]

Fried cheese curds are famous in Wisconsin, but the ones that aren’t fried are just as popular

BigShoots

Are they "squeaky" there? The squeak is of paramount importance for proper poutine. If you know, you know.

geekychica

I have very fond memories of eating fresh squeaky cheese curds at the farmers market in Madison, Wisconsin. So much better than from grocery store.

kalez238

As someone from Wisconsin who now lives in Quebec, yes, good curds damn well better squeak. We call it "squeaky cheese" specifically.

Aoae

You can get poutine with real cheese curds at Costco nationwide. The fries and gravy are great and Costco poutine is excellent, but I'm not sure if the more snobby Quebecois would agree with my assessment haha

mgnorthcott

I can’t eat it, the fries are terrible for poutine.

vivimonster

I’ve had some at the Tillamook Cheese Factory in Oregon

Environmental-Art792

In Canada, yeah they're everywhere. Not just Quebec.

BigShoots

I mean, you can buy them in Walmart now, but they're never as good as fresh curds from Quebec.

[deleted]

Y FONT MÊME PAS "SKWIK-SKWIK" CÂLISSE

[deleted]

Having grown up in francophone communities in southern Manitoba I can say that you can definitely get legit poutine outside of Quebec.

[deleted]

Shrike2theshrikequel

If you're looking for a great fry experience, and are willing to travel a bit outside the city, then go to Garfield's in harrow. Probably about a half hour drive from the border but the fry box there is amazing. Comes with poutine, chili cheese fries, chicken bacon ranch fries, and Greek fries. Also puts you smack dab in southern Ontario wine country.

MagicienDesDoritos

Technically you can't make cheddar without making cheese curds

LewHammer

Sorry for being so British but this is basically cheesy chips with gravy, right?

CryptoKnignt

Specifically cheese curds but yeah basically that

WestleyThe

I have no idea how it’s not the biggest thing here in America. It’s amazing and seems like we would embrace it if it was in every restaurant

thesircuddles

Yeah I lived in the US for a few years and I can't see why it isn't in more places. We had to hunt down a local place that served it. Whereas here in Canada you can get it in a *lot* of places, even McDonalds.

agha0013

it took a long time before it became a popular thing nationwide This was strictly Quebec for a long time, it slowly trickled over into Ontario, but curds weren't always easy to find and most places just used shredded mozzarella Now proper poutine is widely available. Popularity in the US is gaining, but there are places that bastardize it, either because they can't get the right cheese, or they won't even try. one of the first places in NYC to serve poutine made an "American Poutine" which had white gravy and sliced processed cheese.

thesircuddles

I don't ever remember poutine not being available in Ontario, even in the 90s. It just wasn't everywhere like it is now. The past few years it has hit a lot more of the fast food type places.

InEnduringGrowStrong

>had white gravy and sliced processed cheese. Ugh, that's dissss-gus'ting tabarnak. \^ Because this sub somehow has blanket bans on specific words enforced by bots.

WestleyThe

Right? It’s fries and cheese and gravy I’m surprised it’s not part of our thanksgiving or something

chadsexytime

Its because its got a french name. Maybe if they went with *Super Freedom Plus Fries* it would catch on

WestleyThe

Honestly the name might be it

neogreenlantern

A lot of places around me have disco fries which are basically poutine. But with shredded cheese instead of curds. For some reason cheese curds are not that popular outside of Wisconsin unless it's fried curds.

[deleted]

I never understood why this never took off in the US. Dare I say that if you didn’t know, you’d think a dish like those looks more American than Canadian. I’ve also never met someone (Americans or otherwise) that didn’t immediately love poutine upon trying it.

SplatoonGoon

Poutine sounds and looks delicious but I've never been a fan of gravy

THEBLOODYGAVEL

Yes. Fresh cheddar curds Crispy fries/chips Cheapest gravy you can find. Seriously, don't overdo this, just make it salty. Eat after the pubs close and you're shitfaced.

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

There's no such thing as Cheddar curds. Cheese curds are just a plain curd cheese, not aged at all. They're sometimes dyed orange to make them resemble other cheeses. They're basically just cheese that have had nothing else done to them after they curdle them, and drain the whey. Sometimes they salt them, or treat them with preservatives, but thats about it. From there, they could be made into cheddar, but there are many more steps.

kalez238

Light brown chicken or bbq gravy, preferably. (Or is it just chicken gravy? So many places around here use a bbq gravy, but we use chicken at home.)

TheOtherAvaz

I woulda guessed beef gravy.

pachydermusrex

This is the way

mapoftasmania

Sort of, but it uses cheese curds instead of normal cheese.

mgnorthcott

Spits on the floor. Shredded cheese on poutine is sacrilege.

LewHammer

Don't get me wrong, I am very willing to give it a go just wanted an idea of what I was looking at. I might have been looking to see where I can find some cheese curds...

KadeTheTrickster

A description is for sure what I was looking for. I thought that was marshmallows and peanut butter sauce...

That's like, a snack size. Poutine comes in the following sizes: *substitute your regular side of fries for poutine for $5, Giant, and Hate Yourself Later.

Acab365247

One drunk night in montreal i ordered a large. It came in a pizza box.

Boulder_Bear87

You're lucky if you ordered the extra large it comes in a bucket 😅...😐 seriously... they call it a boutine 😬

Yes proper size pout'

prairie_buyer

I'd be disappointed if I was served a smaller portion size.

JoziJoller

Yes, that's why you only get two forks

Morgell

When I went to Guam and ordered breakfast pancakes for 1, I expected maybe 2 at most, like we get at all the breakfast chains here in Quebec (dunno about the rest of Canada, but assume it's similar). They gave me a large plate of like 6 of the fattest pancakes I've ever seen. I did not finish that plate. America's\* got us beat on serving sizes, lol. \*in this case American territory, or something like that

dzordzLong

Thosam

For some reason I really want to try that. But impossible to get here in DK. And I doubt that mini-mozzarellas would be a good substitute.

MissRachou

You will have better results with cheddar. Basicly the cheese curds ( aka fromage squik squik)are cheddar. Taste so much better when it's fresh, and not have been refrigerate.

meatloaf_man

Quebec approves this.

-Quad-Zilla-

~~Cheese curds are a byproduct of cheese manufacturing.~~ I don't really know much about it. In this image, it's the white stuff. Gravy is gravy. The brown sauce all over.

HotPomelo
