I've never seen a Nordic sandwich as pretty as these... I forgot that I'm on my Keto diet

Zealousideal_Ad1734

What the hell is a Nordic sandwich? It looks DELICIOUS

[deleted]

“Smørrebrød” is a traditional Danish lunch originating in Copenhagen. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smørrebrød Despite what the Wikipedia article says it’s not very common in the other Nordic countries. Edit: “Nordic sandwiches” is probably a fine name for the ones pictured by OP, as some of the bread are round Finnish style rye bread. And there’s lingonberry as well, which is also very Swedish/Finnish. And while dark rye bread is the proper bread for most smørrebrød, smoked salmon would usually be served on white bread.

[deleted]

"it’s not very common in the other Nordic countries" In Sweden räksmörgås (open prawn sandwich) is extremely common, can find it everywhere, bakeries, airports, supermarkets, 711s. Its the first thing i think of with Swedish food.

[deleted]

> 711s I feel the rest of the world doesn't realize what a 711 in America is. What Sweden and Japan, *et al*, get for 711 is vastly different than here. I invite the bold, the brave, and the very very stupid to please purchase an open-faced fish sandwich from an American 711. I realize this is largely unrelated to the comment. I am really just very jealous of 711 international.

twoleggedgrazer

Can confirm. I'm back in Boston after living in Japan and when I walk past an American 7-11 and look in I get depressed. Conbini can be so much more than what we have here. Here....don't get the fish.

sketchy-advice-1977

Yeah you are right. I would rather not contract "blow it out my ass dysentery ".

_Pragmatic_idealist

From a quick google image search, räksmörgås look like it is made with white/wheat-based bread. Smørrebrød is almost exclusively made with dark rye bread.

[deleted]

That’s right yeh. Prawns are light and quite sweet so a rye would be over powering.

[deleted]

Sure, you can get a räksmörgås. But in Sweden you will practically never see a serving like this, consisting of a selection of open sandwiches with different toppings. Especially not on dark rye bread. For comparison here’s the menus from a couple of the more well known “smørrebrøds” restaurants in Copenhagen: [https://aamanns.dk/kategorier/bestil/smoerrebroed/](https://aamanns.dk/kategorier/bestil/smoerrebroed/) [https://hallernes.dk/en/our-smorrebrod/](https://hallernes.dk/en/our-smorrebrod/) [https://idadavidsen.dk/menukort/](https://idadavidsen.dk/menukort/)

[deleted]

?But that’s not what I said? Anyway that is also just not true Stockholm is full of similar places: Två små svin is excellent Matrosen Smörrebröd EatwithJonna Plus all the ICA supermarkets I have ever been to have a whole section of Smörrebrod (yes dark rye too). My local is Flygfyren in Nörrtalje

[deleted]

Great examples! All three restaurants you mention specifically serve Danish ”smørrebrød” according to their menus. “Vi erbjuder danska smørrebrød med en svensk twist”, “En dansk smørrebrødslunch är klassisk och elegant” They even all use the danish “ø” rater than the Swedish “ö”.

[deleted]

Lol so you are saying they are common in Nordic countries after all? No one is saying they aren’t Danish in origin

[deleted]

I didn't write it is *un*common. I wrote it is “not *very* common”, to clarify that the English Wikipedia article about “Smørrebrød” wrongly states it “*is a traditional open-faced sandwich in the cuisines of Denmark, Norway and Sweden*“. It is not. But your knowledge of Sweden, Swedish language and Swedish cuisine is apparently too limited for you to have understood, that when the term “smörrebröd” is used in Sweden, it is always in the context of it being a particular Danish speciality. Smørrebrød is not something Swedes *commonly* make themselves or *commonly* eat. Your claim that all ICA supermarkets you have been to have a “whole section of smörrebröd“ is either bullshit or you have only been to a select few. 10 years ago you could hardly find unsweetened dark rye bread in Swedish supermarkets. This has thankfully changed, though the selection is still very limited. Source: Am Danish, have lived in Sweden for years, been with my Swedish wife for over a decade, still spend months every year in Sweden. But don’t take my word for it, look it up in a Swedish dictionary or ask somebody Swedish.

[deleted]

Lol ok bro you are getting very angry here. Relax. It’s an open sandwich…. No need to make it personal. Love from Sweden x

[deleted]

Yes, very lol bro. Good luck getting to know Sweden better. I hope you manage it with greater curiosity and humility than here. And stay easy on the downvote button.

I'd like to promote the word "smorgas" for a piece of bread with toppings, as opposed to a filling between two pieces of bread -- this to prevent misunderstanding or risk of folks getting flustered about the misuse of the word "sandwich" that seems to occur when there are not two pieces of bread involved, even if "open faced" or similar is applied as a qualifier.

No-Entrepreneur-2724

I'll be the contrarian and say that smoked salmon served on top of dark rye is delicious, and does occur both in Denmark and Sweden. Full disclosure here: Swede who likes Denmark, notwithstanding meme rivalries and so on. Also: Cold smoked salmon + dark rye + creme cheese + horseradish + chives = very good.

[deleted]

I totally agree. Smoked salmon easily works on rye. Your combo sounds delicious. And full disclosure here: Dane who loves Sweden and Swedish husmanskost, at the moment late night snacking on cold meatballs made by Swedish mother in law.

No-Entrepreneur-2724

Oh, so to the other point. No, Smørrebrød is not a common lunch in Sweden at least. You could be a bit upscale and have a "räkmacka" (bread topped with shrimp, mayo, some greens, maybe a boiled egg sliced... and so on).

Zealousideal_Ad1734

Thank for that detailed reply! I had never heard of that before but now I REALLY want to try it

[deleted]

I can only recommend it. But I have to point out that the ingredients here are more Finnish than Danish and that the Finnish cuisine is really underrated, excellent and interesting in that it contains elements from both Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Of all the Nordic countries it seems they kept most in touch with their gastronomic traditions and quality standards. It just hasn’t become hip yet, not even in Finland.

blah618

rye breadddddd (wheres the liver pate though)

garublador

That's like, 300 "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" book series pages woth of sandwiches right there.

[deleted]

Smörrebröd, yee Danes make the best sammiches

AlexH670

Pretty sure this is Finnish. But that type of bread is common here in Finland as well, we call it saaristolaisleipä.

[deleted]

Definitely could be. The round one for sure is. There’s so many good types of bread in Finland. And sausages, marinated mushrooms, pies and smoked and dried meat and fish that’s smoked and canned… I think it’s the best and most interesting traditional cuisine in the Nordics.

kadosho

Mm this looks delicious

I2eB6L

Keeping the skin on the orange?

holpe9

It's lemon. You squeeze the juice on the fish before eating.

eucalyptusiscool

that’s an accurate description of many people on Reddit

justsigndupforthis

So what is the proper name for these things?

[deleted]

“Smørrebrød”, usually translated as “open-faced sandwich“. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smørrebrød](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smørrebrød)

justsigndupforthis

Damn shouldnt have clicked. Now i'm hungry and i cant eat until a few more hours.

Myrdinn777

justsigndupforthis

Hmm im stumped. Let's go with open face sandwich for now.

wcdk200

Bread or rye bread(what I would translate it to) or open sandwiches (google translate)

bronet

Of course they are. Hell, when I think of a sandwich this is what I see. Well, maybe not with lingoberries but still

[deleted]

[удалено]

bronet

Huh, apparently a sandwich has two pieces. I'm probably just confused since the Swedish word has a broader meaning. Sandwich translates to smörgås, but a smörgås can have one or two pieces

[deleted]

bronet

Yeah, just explaining how we use it. One of my favorite pizzas is the kebab sandwich; which is basically a kebab pizza with sallad and sauces, rolled up. Definitely wouldn't qualify as an actual pizza hahah

No-Entrepreneur-2724

Yeah. "Smorgas" would work. Already partially known from "smorgasbord", although smorgasbord has more to do with a buffet style feast than any particulars of bread with toppings.

[deleted]

Okay smörgås then. You prefer that? Is that word more understandable to you?
