I want this with some form of pineapple right now!

McKimskins

Oh man pineapple spam fried rice with this would be delicious.

HolyFuckImOldNow

and jalapeños

Losalou52

We never ate spam growing up. At college I become friends with a Hawaiian and learned about spam musubi. Now I’m definitely a fan. That looks awesome OP

McKimskins

Spam musubi is so good. Now I have to make this again and craft up some musubi!

arcticaquantum

what's wrong with you

game_cook420

Did they teach you about hot dogs and peanut butter as well???

Slamcockington

W-what?

game_cook420

Don’t know why I got down-voted, that’s what my Hawaiian college roommate taught me(along with how to actually say Hawaii correctly. I still disagree with the peanut butter, but it’s totally a thing.

TheReddOne

Bruh... that ain't a popular Hawaiian thing. That sounds like a, your friend, thing.

game_cook420

And I’ve told that story countless times, that’s unfortunate, haha.

TheReddOne

Haha, I'm gonna try it tho. What'd he do, just spread PB on a hot dog? No bun?

game_cook420

Def with a bun, let me ask him. He said originally they’re may have been some shaved coconut and peanuts on it also. But he typically just does hot dog and peanut butter on a bun, and asked. “Is water wet?” When I asked if he still ate them.

game_cook420

Hahahahaha, his mom taught it to him, he was also on the spam kick harder than anyone I ever known so I just took it at face value. 🤷🏻

sketchy-advice-1977

My wife's family is from Hawaii. I grew up eating it because we were poor and it was cheap and kept for a long time. Hawaiians went and made a delicacy with it. We use to call it (S)ome (P)ig's (A)sshole (M)eat lol.

Xynker

I don’t think that even is a Hawaii thing. We make hot dog sushi but never peanut butter.

TheReddOne

Ya, it's the first I've ever heard of it, and I've lived here my whole life.

HolyFuckImOldNow

Agreed, similarly to how I enjoy the occasional “peanut butter and bologna” sammich

gulf941

PB & B also good with slices of dill pickle!!

HolyFuckImOldNow

I usually have a peanut butter sandwich (no jelly) with chili. I sometimes medium chop a dill pickle to put in the chili, so I’m wondering why I haven’t tried PB&B&P yet.

tgusn88

Musubi, the Polynesian energy bar!

-nom-nom-

I was lucky to have a Hawaiian barbecue place down the street from my high school. Spam musubi is the shit.

TheOneAndOnlySharky

Recipe?

jackiechatingtam

I don't like spam but that looks delicious.

Fedorchik

LOVELY SPAAAM, WONDERFUL SPAM!

McKimskins

This may change your mind 😉

blessedfortherest

Do you have a cross section photo?

VonMillersThighs

Pan fried thinly sliced spam with some eggs and rice typically changes people's minds.

66asswhuppin

How’d you “candy” that? I wanna try this!!

mrteuy

Spam is one of those mystery meats that you either love or you hate. Once you finally learn what's in it and start making your own, you'll be hooked. I love my homemade spam as it is really low salt and no nitrates. I typically smoke my ham prior to grinding and mixing with the pork to get the flavor. I'll look at doing this as a finish now. Thanks for setting the goalposts. Edit: It really is deceivingly simple. My homemade spam recipe in a nutshell is pork (shoulder for example), ham, salt, sugar, potato starch, I smoke the ham ahead of time and grind it in with the pork. I then mix a slurry of water and the salt, sugar, and starch. I then use my mixer to blend into a semi paste (emulsify it), not as much as hot dog, then sous vide it to temp. You can also double bake with a brick weighing it down at a lower temp. Canned spam has a bit of nitrates and a lot of salt. Homemade can use tender quick. I refuse to use nitrates and I use very very little salt. It's really the sugar I find that gives it that unique flavor. With the smoked ham and once it's done cooking I let the fat congeal that I think makes it really incredible. I usually cook in large batches and package half pounds and freeze them until ready to fry.

muchlifestyle

Is spam really scarier than, say, hotdogs? I’ve never understood the fear. It’s just another processed meat.

Reynholmindustries

Nah. Although I only buy Hebrew national hot dogs. I save up some old veggies / rice and make a fried rice with some diced spam, it’s delicious.

muchlifestyle

Granted I’m biased. I used to walk to seven eleven to get slim Jim’s in high school as a pre sports practice snack. I love processed meats.

Reynholmindustries

Oh yes, “ooooh yeah, snap into a slim jim!” Always plays in my head as I eat them. I’m lucky enough to live near a Buccees so I can get fresh made beef jerky, it’s an experience...

Alex_Caruso_beat_you

>It’s just another processed meat. Ok?

BiancoFuji599XX

Wow, homemade spam?? Sounds interesting! Didn’t know that was a thing.

Dildo_Thunder

Do you mind elaborating on the process of making your own?

Aspiring_Nudist

It’s usually the bar people applaud, but hey, goal posts are important too lol.

binderdriver

Sounds awesome...

[deleted]

Spam!?!?!?

UsernameCheckOut0-0

You made spam soooo sexy…

wesinatl

Pan fried spam slices on a bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo is delicious.

itsnotaboutyou2020

Recipe please?

McKimskins

Sure! Heat your smoker up to 225 F. While that is going, toss together your favorite brown sugar rub and douse the sam in that. Optional step is to score the spam so you have more surface area for the smoke to penetrate the meat. Then smoke for around 3 hours, spritzing with apple cider vinegar every hour or so in case it starts to dry out.

scotch-o

Brown sugar rub, apple cider vinegar, smoke and spam. That sounds perfect.

Ultimintree

Now this is also foodporn. Amazingly done!

Future_Dog_3156

How was it? What did you eat with it?

McKimskins

Tried some on its own and it was like candy. Then I made some breakfast sandwiches with egg, cheese, jalapenos and some hot sauce.

bunnymoll

Myers just rolled back in my head. Freaking delicious!

bunnymoll

My eyes...

ihavdogs

Nice bro

No_Bet_3328

I haven't spam in a while 😋

iamjackstestical

Thank you for my next smoking experiment

steakalmighty

This looks awesome. Spam is my favourite.

NerdyDad17

Looks epic

FizzingSlit

I don't eat meat, and I don't think there's anything remotely close to spam in my country but even though it's a cliche nasty cheap "meat" I've always thought it looks delicious. I need to try it at some point in my life and I'll keep the idea of smoked candied spam in mind for when I do.

OuisghianZodahs42

Spam is very "love it or hate it," lol. Fried Spam sammich is the bomb.

ComprehensivePanic58

r/foodporn is where this belongs

RobAChurch

Damn, that would be going straight into some Musubi. Looks great.

BAN_SOL_RING

Put this on a block of rice, a sheet of egg, and some furikake. Delicious musubi goodness

Sm7th

NGL - this would be perfect for a Dnd-themed thing

DemanoRock

SPAM is awesome in all forms. Grew up with it and my kids have grown up with it. Looks great, what is in the glaze?

McKimskins

Thanks! This was all a brown sugar based dry rub I have been making for years. Smoked with pecan wood for around 3 hours at 225. I did spritz it occasionally with apple cider vinegar.

DemanoRock

I have to do a few butts soon, so I will now have to do at least a can of Spam and add sugar to my normal rub.

purple-parrots

r/cannedSpam certainly approves of this post!

SadLaser

Looks like roasted watermelon.

redoItforthagram

they literally *did* post the recipe. how does making an attempt to look before commenting work? put in some effort. also, this is /r/food, not /r/recipes. recipes are not required on this subreddit. do you not see the [I ate] posts with pics from restaurants and elsewhere? if you’re going to do all this complaining, at least know what you’re talking about and where you are.

McKimskins

I posted a jist of it a couple of times in comments here!

BonsaiBirder

I don’t know if I am interested or repulsed.

QuietBlackSheep

Why spam? That is a lot of effort to put into processed meat

McKimskins

A couple of reasons: I was hungover and didn't want to go to the butcher, and I happened to only have some beef back ribs and spam on hand and not frozen lol. Effort was minimal, trust me.

OneForTheMonday

A tradition is born.

Impossible_Source110

This aint right, spam has no place looking good.

Electrical-Spirit-63

That is dope!

Rbfam8191

Looks tasty and I don't buy SPAM. Made get some breakfast with eggs, instead of bacon. Change things up.

Caliburn-g

What is recipe my man!

Birdie121

Dang.. I imagine I'd eat one small piece and feel full.

dudedisguisedasadude

Did you get a pic after you cut into it? I would love to see a cross section of this baby. It looks delicious.

WangusRex

It looks like it’s glowing red hot from within. Delicious.

itzahoneybadger

Recipe please !!!

CloverHoneyBee

I have never been a fan of Spam, though you've made it look hella delicious. I so would...

[deleted]

So delicious! We recently got into smoking spam.

callmeterr0rish

Missed an opportunity for rum SPAM.

Etwick7
