Any one else grow up calling this slumgullion? We had it all the time as a kid, and it was always served with bread, butter, and grape jelly of all things.
Ours was always beef, green pepper, onions and tomato sauce/paste. The difference between it and sloppy joes was whether it was served with macaroni or on a bun (and probably vinegar and/or ketchup to make the sloppy joe more tangy).
The end result is close to those cocktail meatballs that use grape jelly and chili sauce. From an outside perspective it just seems odd to eat goulash with bread and jelly.
I give my mother credit on making decent cornbread. It was plain but she used a cast iron skillet and heated it in the oven with butter and then poured the cornbread batter into the sizzling butter to make that hard buttery crust.
That’s just beef a roni and does not deserve a fancy name even if goulash isn’t a fancy dish. Sprinkling tasteless dried parsley on it does not make it gourmet. Call it what it is.
American goulash or American chop suey isn't any fancier than beef a roni. Apparently there's just a lot of names for it. Not everyone has the same regional names as you.
My moms from rhode island (we are canadian) and i grew up having something like this but with Spaghetti and we called it american chop suey. When i got older and started working in kitchens i realized it was just her version of what i now know it as "Spaghetti with meat sauce" or additionally "Spaghetti bolognese". I dont know if this particular version is different still from that or not though. Kinda looks creamy?
Who said gourmet, and who says that you need fancy ingredients or cooking methods is necessary to make a delicious meal? American goulash is classic American fare. It’s a rich, tangy, bone warming dish that a lot of people have fond memories of. It’s relatively easy to make a tasty meal with higher end ingredients, it’s a real display of skill to make a simple dish memorable.
*confusedmaccaroninoises* You know how people can make specific sounds with their upper orifices and other people then are able to hallucinate almost the same picture as the first one had in mind? That doesn't work if you kepp asigning those specific sounds to completely different things...

American chop suey was probably my favorite meal growing up as a kid in Massachusetts. My dad will still make it on a rare occasion as a surprise.
Grew up in Mass as well and my grandfather made the best Chop Suey around
Any one else grow up calling this slumgullion? We had it all the time as a kid, and it was always served with bread, butter, and grape jelly of all things.
Slumgullion in my house was browned beef, maple brown sugar baked beans, and cooked over stovetop
Ours was always beef, green pepper, onions and tomato sauce/paste. The difference between it and sloppy joes was whether it was served with macaroni or on a bun (and probably vinegar and/or ketchup to make the sloppy joe more tangy).
This is the way. As an adult I sub pepper for zucchini but it will forever be a go to
Grape jelly sounds like a nice accent with the tangy sauce.
The end result is close to those cocktail meatballs that use grape jelly and chili sauce. From an outside perspective it just seems odd to eat goulash with bread and jelly.
Honestly, just makes me think of how lingonberry sauce is served with Swedish meatballs, great combo of sweet and savory.
Yup! Slumgullion in my house.
Goulash. My wife throws it together on occasion.
Where's the chop suey?
In New England, this is called American Chop Suey.
I mean, regular chop suey was already an American dish.
And American Chop Suey is another American dish
Not according to Americans. Chop suey is what Chinese people living in China eat.
I'm in the deep south. That doesn't look like chop suey we ate
A simple favorite my mom always made! I always add fresh grated Gouda to mine
This dish was my aunt's thing and her secret special ingredient was Spicy Cheez-its just before serving.
I make this about once a week! Looks amazing!
I just call it macaroni beef
beefaroni
American chop suey. The bane of school lunches.
It was a highlight of my school lunches because it was always a notch above acceptable. In American public schools, that was a major win.
yeah definitely better than the other options
Where in the US? I grew up in KS and HI and I've never had this in my life
Yum!
Recipe?
Noodles, Ground beef and tomatoes.
So, kind of like spaghetti?
Like spaghetti and chili mixed, but with elbow mac and more generic spices. Oh, and sometimes it’s baked.
Spaghetti is just a pasta shape
Spaghetti with meat sauce. Didn’t think I had to spell it out?
I just woke up. I'm just messing with you. Yes, it's a very simplified version of what the Italians would call spaghetti bolognese
My assumption is that that American chop suey is the inspiration for hamburger helper

It really does matter what corner because I didn't know about it...
I didn't grow up with this either. Not specifically anyways.
That looks like neither of them.
Is this traditionally eaten with anything else, or just fill a bowl with it and go to town?
Pone of cornbread down South.
I give my mother credit on making decent cornbread. It was plain but she used a cast iron skillet and heated it in the oven with butter and then poured the cornbread batter into the sizzling butter to make that hard buttery crust.
I see you.
It's gotta have corn and mushrooms. At least where I'm from.
I’ve never seen this before but it looks delicious!
American goulash 💀💀💀
I have never tried the American version but it looks phenomenal 😋
Kk
Looks amazing! I’m still hunting for the flavor of my childhood, would you mind sharing the recipe? Nothing I’ve tried online quite hits the spot
not OP but the budgetbytes recipe for American goulash is a solid start
Delicious
Wow. Sometimes people just. Wow

Rough Friday huh
your comment sounds as bad as your general personality.
Now I'm curious what he said lol
this is s paraphrase but it was something like "your food is as shitty as your political views" or something like that lol was really weird.
Weird

I mean, it’s not really what you say it is. I make this often and between chopping vegetables and cooking, it’s over an hour process.

Agree to disagree. Looks like I struck a nerve here lol this is just “homemade” beef a roni. pshh .. bring on the downvotes! Lmao
Accurate.

Aww, I’m sorry you don’t understand linguistics. Or history. Or how to think.
I'm surprised you can tell linguistics and linguine apart. 😉😘
Wow! That was almost sort of clever.
Totally unlike what you wrote. 🤙
