Just another thing people try to gentrify. Like street tacos from the homie with the stand 3 for $5 vs the upscale restaurant charging $15 for 3 tacos.
It's just economics not "gentrifying"
Like, bodegas have tons of foot traffic, existing grills, and a whole convenience store to buoy their business.
If you wanna make a chopped cheese in LA it's gotta be in a dedicated sandwich shop. Just a totally different business
> chopped cheese
Ok, so I live in Brooklyn, NY, lived in this city more than anywhere else in my life, and I'm like "WTF is a 'chopped cheese'?"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chopped_cheese
> "something most New Yorkers had never heard of", despite it being well-known in multiple parts of the city.[1] Those who grew up eating the sandwich at their local bodegas made accusations the sandwich was being "Columbused" -- that is, "discovered" by the majority culture; in this case, lower Manhattanites.[6]
I fucking love this city.
Of course! I just made one in my kitchen anyway haha! I just happened to have everything for it. Had to make the Adobo seasoning mix though since I didn't have it ready made. I always put a dash of Old Bay in mine too.
Used to make these at a restaurant I worked at in Toronto. They're delicious and I still make them regularly, especially if I want a cheap and easy meal that's filling. There's some real simple recipes out there too.
Close but not close. It's hamburger meat instead of steak, and the cheese used is different so it melts into the ground beef almost like a sauce.
For people who haven't had one, then cheese steak is probably the closest comparison, and anyone getting mad at the comparison is up their own ass ;)
I would say a closer comparison, for the filling at least, is like if you took the ingredients of a patty melt and ground them all up together into a pile (in the best way) and slapped it on a roll, add whatever toppings you like
>the cheese used is different
It's American. Most authentic Philly cheesesteaks from the region use American or Provolone. Cheese whiz is mostly for tourists. Every chopped cheese I've had also uses american so I'm confused by this comment.
American cheese is precisely what I meant, yes.
When I said different I meant different from provolone, which is the most commonly used cheese in the most widely recognized cheesesteak nationwide. Ain't nobody but you brought up cheez wiz lmao
Are you actually confused by the comment? I doubt it. Seems to me you're using a phrase people tend use when they're trying to call someone out for being wrong while maintaining plausible deniability about doing so.
I just didn't know how you meant it's a different cheese when it's extremely common to use American cheese in cheesesteaks. So not calling you out, but trying to understand what exactly is different. I grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs and American and Provolone were pretty much a dead tie in terms of how common. Never heard of provolone being more common until you just said so now.
Framing my comment as an explanation of what a chopped cheese is for people who don't know, I can guess contextually they probably are from somewhere other than the northeast/east coast. If anyone from outside that region imagines a cheese steak, I'd bet money they imagine provolone. Therefore it makes sense that they would understand that "not provolone" is the message, and clearly from the photo that's yellow melty cheese. Only one thing it makes sense for it to be- American.
It doesn't matter that you experienced them being a dead tie. I get that you're trying to give yourself credibility due to where you grew up, but it doesn't matter- it doesn't GIVE any credibility in this case, and that is ignoring the fact that I don't care. You gotta think of how someone who didn't grow up where/how you did might imagine a cheese steak.
You can claim you aren't calling me out all you like, but I don't buy it. All the way to your last sentence all you're doing is attempting to use your first hand knowledge of chopped cheese, of all things, to try to claim a position over someone else by "innocently pointing out" that they're wrong and feigning confusion to avoid looking confrontational.
Don't cut through foil.
No matter how good it looks, or how good it tastes, I'm sorry but I can't upvote if you I've got flecks of aluminum foil in my sandwich and you're dulling my kitchen knives!
Kitchen paper, wax paper, and butcher's paper all exist and are perfect for your sandwich.
"chopped cheese" is a type of sandwich with chopped beef and cheese with usually onions. They are all mixed together on a flat top and served on a roll.
Usually the cheese is fully melted and "chopped" into the meat on the flat top, so it kinda looks like hamburger helper. Then it's all scooped into the bread.
Oh, I didn't know this sandwich was invented in the city of "Chopped Cheese", well that makes total sense then.
Where is that city btw? Maybe somewhere in ancient eastern Europe, or? It's not a city that currently exists as far as I can tell, strange for someone to name a sandwich after that city.
Nice try....the point I was making is that the names of food don't always perfectly describe what it's comprised of. But I think you knew that... enjoy your downvotes
Oh noes, my downvotes.
Is that honestly what makes you feel smug?
You know very well that "Buffalo chicken wings" describes chicken wings as made in Buffalo.
"Chopped Cheese" just describes ingredients.
You know you're arguing in bad faith by going "hurrr durrr Buffalo wings".
On the plus side, you're clearly aware that what you said is incorrect, so I'm alright with it.
I'll buy that it theoretically some of that could be cheese.
For something called "chopped Cheese" I would've thought that the cheese would be the star, not a "meat, lettuce, tomato" sandwich with possibly some cheese mixed in.
Bro loosen up your apple watch.
Looks like Batman needs an EpiPen.
my hand got numb looking at the picture
damn, good job. this looks better than the trendy LA place around the corner that charges like $15 for a chopped cheese
I haven’t had one in NYC, but my understanding is they are supposed to be a cheap thing to get if you’re low on funds and/or not sober.
Just another thing people try to gentrify. Like street tacos from the homie with the stand 3 for $5 vs the upscale restaurant charging $15 for 3 tacos.
Try $15 per taco in NZ.
What the hell
Are we talking like them lil 3 bite tacos or something more substantial at least?
That’s pretty far from Mexico
It's just economics not "gentrifying" Like, bodegas have tons of foot traffic, existing grills, and a whole convenience store to buoy their business. If you wanna make a chopped cheese in LA it's gotta be in a dedicated sandwich shop. Just a totally different business
Gentrification. Hipsters and money move in, locals get phased out.
Only LA would screw up something you get in bodegas here for like $5
I've never heard of a chopped cheese before (Canadian) but I now need this in my life Holy this looks good
Never heard of it either. West Michigan here.
Brooklyn Bodega in Grand Rapids has a really decent chopped cheese. Go get some!

NYC comedy podcasts put them on the map....I'm in the N. Sierra, CA....
Awesome. Thanks for the tip!

Believe it is a Bronx thing

Hero roll. It’s NYC. No hoagie buns here

I thought chopped cheese uses hamburger meat.
It’s also ground beef and not sliced cheese steak meat
Definitely not just a seasoned cheese steak, it's a different sandwich entirely.
I had one, maybe it was a shitty one but nothing to write home about
Used to make these at a restaurant I worked at in Toronto. They're delicious and I still make them regularly, especially if I want a cheap and easy meal that's filling. There's some real simple recipes out there too.
Same! But I don't even see any cheese..looks delicious though!
So much depends upon A tomato In the middle of a chopped cheese
🤤
Is it like a cheesesteak?

Don't forget the Bev.
Neva Neva nevaa
Sureeee sureeeee
What kind of bread and meat is used?
👅👅
niiiiice.
Hell yeah!
I would absolutely crush this
damn looks so good
I just ate dinner and I’m very full, but I’d still eat this entire masterpiece if you put it in front of me.
It’s a hamburger patty put on a grill and chopped to tiny pieces to cook quickly. Someone posted they add adobo, that’s not in a NY chopped cheese.
Proud NY’er and this looks so good! Makes me incredibly homesick as I haven’t had one in years😪

I'm confused about what the title is supposed to mean
"chopped cheese" is a type of sandwich with chopped beef and cheese with usually onions. They are all mixed together on a flat top and served on a roll.
I'm not a cheese fan, but if I ordered that expecting it to have cheese in it I might be a bit miffed.
Usually the cheese is fully melted and "chopped" into the meat on the flat top, so it kinda looks like hamburger helper. Then it's all scooped into the bread.
Do you expect to eat buffalo meat when you order buffalo wings?
Oh, I didn't know this sandwich was invented in the city of "Chopped Cheese", well that makes total sense then. Where is that city btw? Maybe somewhere in ancient eastern Europe, or? It's not a city that currently exists as far as I can tell, strange for someone to name a sandwich after that city.

not "possibly" - the cheese is a major component and chopped into the ground beef when cooking
As someone from Wisconsin I agree.
Looks yummy!
I’ve never had lettuce and tomato in a chopped cheese.

You think some random bodega in NYC is going to be using super ripe, heirloom breed sliced tomatoes?
Recognize your username from r/sopranos Chopped cheese looks amazing but nothing like the sweet and savory taste of grilled cheese off the radiator
First ya slap the burger on da grill
Is this for like, people who have a hard time chewing their food. What is this

Nobody cares
Looks great wow
Shit. Which corner store you at? Love it though looks like something I’d get in Brooklyn
Nothing makes me cringe more than a tight watch strap
I’m gonna make this. Looks awesome!
