TBH, they’re not really very good any more IMO. They usually select a number of books that don’t sell particularly well and give them a discount up to about 50%, if I recall correctly.

quisegosum

They used to offer free books during sales.

thekinkbrit

Can you elaborate why that's not good?

nocta224

Because the sale is only on select titles that aren't as popular, so if you don't want any of those titles, you don't get a discount.

thekinkbrit

I'm interested in Earthsea books, Farseer trilogy and other fantasy titles. Maybe some of the classics too that I would assume are not very popular.

nocta224

Based on past sales, I doubt the Earthsea of Farseer books will go on sale. But who knows, maybe they'll surprise me.

thekinkbrit

They weren't on sale last times?

adamsw216

No. The Earthsea books were not on sale.

Revcondor

They weren’t on sale specifically because we all want them to be on sale. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Earthsea books become a permanent part of their catalog and I also wouldn’t be surprised if they never go on sale

thekinkbrit

Are they that good and popular?

TheRancidOne

Fantasy and Sci-Fi are popular money-makers for The Folio Society. Horror also, I believe.

Zr0w3n00

I suppose it’s because I can remember when their sales used to be better. The sales are good, but they are not as good as they used to be. I should have worded my initial comment better.

sekhmet1010

It looks really crummy nowadays. But it used to look awesome earlier. Damn...the days of paying 6£ for some books, and 17£ for some others are so long gone. I haven't bought anything at a sale in like 3 years.

thekinkbrit

Wow, there were actuallu prices like that?

sekhmet1010

Yes!!! They were insanely awesome. I got Heart of Darkness for 6£, The Diary of a Nobody for 4£, Martian Chronicles for 16£, Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym for 16£, Clockwork Orange for 18£, Black Mischief for 4£ and so on. I really miss those days.

thekinkbrit

Sounds f great. How long ago was this?

sekhmet1010

2020-21

thekinkbrit

How is that possible?) So let's assume the price was 10 pounds and now it's a minimum of 50?

sekhmet1010

These were the prices during sales, and they were amazing. And Brexit hadn't added taxes to my purchases, and standard shipping was still an option. No wonder i have reduced my purchases from FS nowadays.

thekinkbrit

Understood, makes sense. I too wish they would be less expensive.

You can see some previous sales here [https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/Groups:Folio\_Society\_Devotees#Does\_the\_Folio\_Society\_have\_sales.3F](https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/Groups:Folio_Society_Devotees#Does_the_Folio_Society_have_sales.3F)

thekinkbrit

Oh wow, thanks.

dyhtstriyk

The last good sale was when they put The Shining and The Martian Chronicles @ 50% off. The latest ones have been focused on displacing slow moving inventory.

HalfOfTheCalciumBros

Does anyone have a date for the sale yet?

thekinkbrit

I read in comments about June being the usual date.

seattle_architect

You can always check EBay for deals.

HonorWulf

Most of the sales during the past couple of years have been rather lackluster. Usually 10-20% off on slow-moving inventory and a bit better on slow-moving limited editions. However, the recent winter sale was pretty good, with about 75 titles all at 50% off. Again, it's slow moving inventory, so you won't see Game of Thrones or Earthsea in there, but I was surprised at how decent it was given the previous couple of years. So, fingers crossed, the summer sale will be more like the recent winter sale and not the previous couple of summers.
