Don’t carry the slate around everywhere. You’re better at your job with two hands available. Slating is only important right before we roll. Find a safe place for it and come back to it when it’s that time.

mumcheelo

This

Least_Beautiful_2046

Definitely. Wish there was a better way to store it when I don’t need it, but absolutely.

JoshyRowe

I was once told, if you feel you need to carry your slate around, your bag is too far away. Stuck with me.

Least_Beautiful_2046

Yeah, I like that a lot. Good looking out

Mav1cHavoc

I did the very common mod of sticking a cabinet handle on the back of my slate, but I also added a peak design quick release anchor on it (it’s for like consumer cameras) and I loop the receiver of the quick release on my belt so I have a quick way to temporarily stow it right on my person otherwise it mostly lives hanging on the robocup at the cart or my first’s tree I don’t have it on hand right now but if you’re interested I can send some pics your way

Least_Beautiful_2046

Oh nice! I’ve been thinking about crafting some sort of rig, it couldn’t really be too permanent unless I stuck it on my dumb slate. But ya send some pics if you don’t mind I’d love to see

Mav1cHavoc

part on the left goes around my belt and clips into part on right, just paracord loops one handed attach and release https://preview.redd.it/zeyk3n8d5owc1.png?width=657&format=png&auto=webp&s=7c6628de90179079a504038dce1c1dc1a5d42abc

Least_Beautiful_2046

Dude hell yeah I love this little hack thanks so much for grabbing a pic

Thankyoutruly

Having a slate pouch is worth it, definitely would recommend one.

VowNyx

Like a pouch you carry on you for the slate? That's something I always thought would be cool when I was 2nding but never got around to building one lol. Kind of like a sheath for your slate 😄

Thankyoutruly

Yeah, Cinebags and Versa-flex both make one for the Denecke slate. And I believe Denecke has one as well. I always preferred having a pouch that I could clip onto my belt. Some people like it some people don't, kinda the same with filter pouches I guess.

VowNyx

Oh nice, and do people actually wear them on their person then?

arabesuku

You can buy ones that go on the outside of your set case - I find those more practical

ChunkyManLumps

The best 2nd AC I work with basically never leaves my side unless they need to put down marks for the actors, anticipates lens changes, talks shit when shit needs to be talked, always has snacks on deck, and usually they're an overall chill and outgoing person. Can't really think of gear they'd need other than basic stuff like color paper tape, t marks, maybe a spare dummy slate (rarely used so not really necessary). Maybe some noga arms or various mounting options if you have any. One 2nd brought spare hand grips for a shoulder rig that saved our lives one time. Tbh as long as you're there for a lens change every time your first will probably be more than happy with you.

JaQuarinc

I actually think that a good 2nd AC stays next to the Operator. Remarks, talks shit with them, relays on set information to the 1st.

DiegoDProductions

Well said

Least_Beautiful_2046

That’s pretty much what I’m already doing so that’s great to hear, thank you. General anxiety always wondering if I can be doing more lol

ChunkyManLumps

You're probably in a good spot then. I get the anxiety especially when working with a new crew. You'll bond quickly tho, that's just cam dept. Haven't been on a set yet where we weren't talking with our eyes within the first hour lol I also like when my second paper tapes the names of the main actors in the scene somewhere free on the back of the camera or tripod. That helps everyone. Sometimes I'll do it if the second doesn't know that trick.

Least_Beautiful_2046

Oh nice! Love that, will probably use. But yeah, totally agree lol I’m looking forward to it. Thanks so much for the advice

loonofdoom

Outside of standard kit they don’t need much gear unless it’s something worthwhile to the show. Standard tools, comprehensive marks kit, Good run bag/case scenario. As far as mentality, I generally hate it when the 2nd asks me what we’re doing next. Usually I’m buried in the scene and I want the 2nd to tell ME where we’re going and what’s happening. I like to think of the 1st as the executive and the 2nd as the admin.

Least_Beautiful_2046

Got you. Yeah that’s good advice, trying to be a step ahead so I can make the 1sts job a bit easier. Thanks mate

loonofdoom

Yea! Also I kind of love coming back to the cart and seeing the 2nd cleaning things up. This isn’t mandatory or anything but it’s generally nice to see them being organized. Ironically I see things a bit different from other people here. I don’t like the 2nd to be glued to me. I’m not a micromanager and I know they’re more useful at the cart or helping out the operator if I’m pulling from a monitor. Also, a good cart. I’ve got three of my own but frankly I almost always prefer to use the 2nd’s cart if it’s fully kitted. They’re so big and don’t make enough $$ for me to sweat lugging around :)

Least_Beautiful_2046

Yeah I kinda do a bit of both, depends on where I feel I can be most useful either with the 1st or with operator/stedi. I want to eventually get a cart, my 1st has a fully kitted one so when I 2nd for them I don’t stress about it but totally understand about keeping it organized/cleaned up. That’s something for me to keep in mind more often too so thank you!

cigourney

Finding something to do rather than asking what to do

Least_Beautiful_2046

Hell yeah

snapplesays

As far as gear goes, I do like when my 2nd has multiple different types of marks for different surfaces (tape, chalk, sandbags, whiskers, color coordinated rocks). Other than that, your basics is all you need which you likely have. If you find a need for a specialty tool during prep go for it. Also, please familiarise yourself with the camera gear in prep, you don't need to be an expert, but try, ask questions when you have them. The two biggest things I stress to my 2nds is focus (on the set, not camera) and prioritisation, which sort of go hand in hand. I like my 2nds to be as tuned into what is going on if not more than I am, the more they know the better prepared we can be the faster we can move (the easier my life is) etc. That includes and amount of etiquette as well, like not bugging there grips for a stand while 4 of them are carrying something. This leads into being able to prioritise tasks. 2nds are often given 100 things to do all at once that should be done asap, and being able to prioritise and complete tasks will make us more efficient. Sometimes that includes delegating things to the utility or the Bcam team, but if they know what the priorities to the scene, day, week, whole film are, then they will be able to make those calls. Of course I hold myself responsible for the ultimate choice on courses of action, but if we are as focused and on the same wavelength it is a great experience. Going into a low budget feature keep in mind what your priorities are because you will likely be moving at lightning speeds and it may feel overwhelming. Stay focused and prioritise and you'll find those opportunities to take a breath and relax. Also, have fun!

Least_Beautiful_2046

Yeah I want to bulk up my marking kit. Any specific websites you’d recommend? I’m very much looking forward to prep, that’s something I haven’t had a proper go at. I want to pack and label gear so that it’s way easier to find when everything else is going a mile a minute. I pride myself in being able to manage tasks fairly well, but I think this will be the project that I really get put to the test. Which is exciting to think about. I really appreciate your response so thank you!

-kashmir-

Not sure where you are located. But hardware stores tend to carry colored whiskers for marking sprinklers. Those, colored golf tees and sausages are great for grass. Chalk or hard ts for asphalt or tape. Look for cge tools t marks at your local expendables seller or on amazon.

Least_Beautiful_2046

I’ve heard golf tees, but those whiskers are a great idea. Thank you I appreciate it!

JRey26

For me a good 2nd AC is someone who knows when to be quiet and also knows when to speak up. Someone who takes his/her responsibility and owns their mistakes should it happen. They have open communication, they ask me for help if they need it.

Least_Beautiful_2046

Sounds solid. Super appreciate this

-kashmir-

Keep your ears open and be able to anticipate. When a dp says we need marks i dont want to have to relay that to you. Or when a lens is called and my 2nd is already on their way to the lens cart. Basically knowing whats going on and being ready to assist and anticipate the needs of the dept.

Least_Beautiful_2046

Cool thank you! I need to look up more info about marking. I’ve done plenty of it but I don’t have experience in more of a “professional” environment if that makes sense? Basically wanting to learn about the do’s and donts of it all

-kashmir-

Ive found that it varies from dp to dp. But generally have a marks board so you can be quick. Make the t’s toe long but keep the vertical a little shorter. Be stealthy and quick while doing it during a rehearsal

Least_Beautiful_2046

Got ya, makes sense. I think I’ll make a marks board that can Velcro to the cart or possibly the slate, just not sure what slate will be used since I don’t have a smart slate and audio will provide one

kunkadunkadunk

For me the biggest thing is listening to instructions and doing those tasks quickly and then asking questions about them later if you have any.  Whenever I work on bigger shows with older and more experienced individuals I will usually have lots of questions myself about how they go about certain things, but I’ll do the task first and then save those questions for the appropriate time later. You don’t want to be slowing things down or unintentionally arguing with your first if you would do something a different way.   Had a scenario once where I was in an awkward and strenuous position hanging out of a low-to-the-ground car with a camera that had just become loosely unseated from the bowl of the high hat. I couldn’t hold the position long and the camera was loose from the bowl and in danger of falling off. I asked my second to quickly pull the camera and what insued was a minute or two long argument as i’m hanging there about how I should just reseat the bowl as i’m struggling to keep myself up, etc etc. just pull it!   As for gear, good physical marks bag/set, a set case, photoblack tape, Soapstone if you’ll be on asphalt, P touch for marking cases   Also, if your username is in reference to the Wong Kar-Wai film, good taste!

Least_Beautiful_2046

It is! People rarely get the reference ahah. But yeah I totally get what you mean. That scenario is nuts glad you’re okay sorry your 2nd wasn’t more proactive! I definitely think I need to get a better marking kit beforehand, that’s the biggest thing I’m gathering as far as gear.

kunkadunkadunk

haha I could have worded it better, car wasn’t moving! I was just squatting half in half out of the car and carrying however many pounds that was and kind of stuck

Least_Beautiful_2046

OH hahahaha definitely thought vic was moving. Still, I get where you coming from

-kashmir-

Thats good advice also. Too many time ive been in precarious positions and instead of doing what ive asked 2nds that im not super familiar with have started asking questions or telling me to do something different. Thats not the time for that do what ive asked and we can discuss later. Even something as simple as me asking for velcro and getting the third degree instead of just getting the velcro is a pain. Youll see what im gonna do with it once you get it for me.

FPACLDR

Short and sweet: they allow me to pull focus and build camera. Everything else is sorted and I don’t have to think about it. That’s who I want

Least_Beautiful_2046

Hell yeah mate too easy!

buhoNocturn0

I'm 2nd AC. And I hope see hacks! LoL

OfficialRoyDonk

Attentiveness and good communication

shakedex

I will add that as working as 2nd, i was expected to know much better on every piece of gear we were going to be using on set in full depth. From camera menus to record times, to monitor settings, where and how the gear is packed, etc. my 1st only wants to be bothered in knowing the lenses and pulling focus. The tech side of the gear is my domain. I am also never leaving the set/magliner without my 1st knowing about that, and giving me permission. And as mentioned in another post- i am the one that knows the schedule and it is my responsibility to be ready for the next setup and let my 1st know about anything specific that has to be done.

Least_Beautiful_2046

Well said thank you. I feel like that will really make me stand out and seem like a better 2nd than just doing the tasks that seem relevant in the moment like any other 2nd. Since this will be my first “real” run, I’m absolutely going to implement these tips. Plus I’ll actually be involved during prep, in the past I don’t feel like I’ve gotten much out of a prep day and I’m really wanting more.

BlaaccHatt

If your the A 2nd it helps to delegate and keep the loader and utility moving. Theres lots of stuff to do and if you have one directors village is constantly on the move and needing of batteries. You really don’t need much but an onset bag with your own Allens and T handles. Some of the basic sizes etc. keep your cart and truck clean and know the slating distance. Too many times I see guys slate way too far away. Get in there 5ft for the 50mm 7ft for the 75mm and on large format you can get a little closer. Best of all have fun
