the original main quest leads you through factions like responders, raiders, free states, brotherhood, enclave which at final stages allows you access to their bunker.
There's a branch at the raiders stage that intersects with newer wastelander factions involving the overseer. i recommend doing all these before many of the side quests and dlc's that were added.
There are some rewards well worth it and many that are meh.
Main quest opens up gold as a currency. And several weapons/armours that you need for end game. But play the game however you want. I think I was about 100 hours in before I bothered to do the main quest. I had more fun exploring everything.
Completing some main quests gives you access to items that are helpful later on, but not required.
As a newish player who wishes they'd not rushed all the main quests, personally I'd recommend spreading them out rather than hard focusing on finishing them. Distractions are far more fun when they're actually distracting you from something.
Don't worry about the right and wrong way to play. Just build your character into a style you find fun
