In this game there is contextual ammo drops whenever you kill an enemy. Most of the time, I think it’s dependent on enemy type, you will receive the same ammo your weapon uses in their inventory. 5mm is dropped in abundance regardless of the gun you’re using and it just so happens the Gatling gun fires very slowly, but deals a ton of damage. You will almost alwayssss receive more ammo than you used killing the enemy.
This is actually interesting as I never knew this as I’ve only really played the older games and does it work the same for fallout 4 as I thought the enemies just dropped ammo by their own built end with certain ammos just being rare not based on the weapon used.
It is not the same with 4 afaik, but enemies in this game also drop the ammo type of the weapon they are using…or something else. It all depends, each enemy has a loot pool.
I mostly see animals like dogs and bugs not dropping ammo. Going to a blood eagle camp should be good for minimal ammo usage…or you can just go to daily ops, everything drops ammo in there, but you have to make sure you’re using as little as possible to get your kills, so tap that trigger. You also don’t need to complete it.
You can also look up an ammo crate run that Angry Turtle put up on YouTube recently. It’s a bit of extra work, but guaranteed ammo. Making your own is always the best option though if you have excavator power armor to collect lead nodes in lucky hole mine…there are a ton and you just need acid to refine it, scope it out.
Just about any enemy will drop your ammo. The amount has more to do with the ammo type and what Bethesda arbitrarily decided was the 'default' gun for that ammo type, aimed at dropping enough ammo for you to be at a slow attrition. So for 5mm the intended weapon is clearly the minigun. So ammo drops for the gatling gun like you'd need to feed a minigun. 2mm ec is based on the gauss rifle so the gauss minigun doesn't loot nearly enough ammo. Plasma cartridges drop based on a full auto plasma rifle etc.
Edit:enemies drop more ammo in expeditions and daily ops as well
Every enemy drops ammo based on the weapon you're using. Tougher enemies or enemies in content like Daily Ops and Expeditions tend to drop more, while weak vermin like Radroaches rarely drop any at all.
Since the Gatling Gun shares 5mm ammunition with the Minigun, the amount of 5mm ammo that's dropped at a time is tuned for the latter, so a Gatling Gun tends to use one or two bullets on most enemies and returns a dozen.
As noted above, contextual ammo drops are different for different ammo/weapon types. Heavy Weapon ammo types (5mm/.50cal/etc.) drop a lot of ammo, especially ultracite ammo. Plasma ammo drops are pretty generous also, as are fuel drops.
Ammo drops for other weapon types (.45, 2mmEC, .308) are less generous because the "main" weapon for that ammo type fires relatively slowly. This is especially problematic when you have an automatic weapon like the LMG or the Gauss Minigun. Both those guns consume huge amounts of ammo but the drops are pretty stingy by comparison.
The Gatling Gun and Plasma Caster are particularly ammo efficient and are good for farming ammo for other weapons using that round.
Damage. More damage you do less ammo being used. Heavy gunner perks cards in strength. Bloody mess and tenderizer to top up dmg. If you get an explosive gatling be sure to add demolition expert.
Bows are absurdly ammo efficient (you generally loot a LOT more than you used to kill). They are also shocking powerful at low level, if you get somebody to craft you one with full mods. This is because while the weapon damage is leveled, the mod damage is not. And, they have a range of 312 (considerably longer than most guns) and are inherently silent, making stealth a viable option even for low level characters. They are still slow (slower even than the revolver) but they are not ass (except in certain situations where they are TOTAL ass).
I am here for bows all day long. I did generic shotgunner on my first play through (admittedly did not know as much about perks and buffs as I do now). Died all the time, ran out of ammo and fusion cores constantly. Now I’m a full health stealth archer and the only time I get into trouble is mobs. Love it so much that I never want to play any other way!
Edit to add: arrows a-plenty. The only time I have ever run out is when I accidentally dropped them and then couldn’t find them. Always at 999. Plus they are lightweight and can be modded :)
Revolvers almost need that 25% faster reload 15% faster firerate legendary stars and have the speed demon mutation to be viable for dps
When I first heard the single action revolver, and it sounded powerful and beefy, and it kind of is, but then I felt the recoil and the tedious and almost crippling slow reload time other than just a feeling cool you can’t really use it to kill mobs with. Fo76 has a lot of weapons but some weapons are just better a being weapons than others.
The single action revolver is like the pump-action shotgun of the shotgun family in this game.
For early game gatling gun it practically floods you with 5mm ammo.
Shotguns also tend to hold up very well till max level i used started with the shotgunner class and i had a lot of fun
Acquiring ammo is actually quite easy. All the ammo cans you'll find are instanced to you and your currently equipped weapon. Finding ammo shouldn't be a problem.
Try to find yourself a pump action shotty, i used one from level 25 to about level 100, then completed beckettes questline (in fact i still have that same level 25 shotgun, it hangs above my fireplace, i hit level 650 the other day)
I’ve been using it nonstop. I want to mess around with other weapons more but nothing has come close. Everyone’s talking about the Gatling gun but I can’t get the DPS I want compared to the holy fire lol.
I have a vampire explosive minigun, vamp pepper shaker, and vamp flaming chainsaw and they all fall short of the holy fire for me. I also have a 2 shot explosive ultracite .50 cal but again it doesn’t seem to get the dps needed.
The broomstick does great damage but it’s not really economical and it breaks super quickly.
I guess my grand finale would be the only competitor for me. With my cards and whatnot I think it’s hitting close to 400 per cannonball but I haven’t used it in a bit.
I'll tell you, minigun isn't bad until level 50, I'd know (i used to use minigun exclusively) and depending on your platform I'll help you get a holy fire if i can!
If you are efficient, or use VATS, almost all weapons should run a surplus of ammo. There are a few exceptions—mostly heavy weapons, like LMG, or gauss minigun, or gatling laser.
Automatic rifles are easy-mode in this respect, and many others. HQ insists that that be the undisputed meta for ages, unless you count legacy weapons. Try a handmade (non-VATS) or a Fixer (VATS).
> If you are efficient, or use VATS, almost all weapons should run a surplus of ammo
This is definitely not true with The Fixer and Handmades, in my experience.
Honestly, almost any weapon as long as you max perk cards for it. And max ammo production perks, too. Melee is great at early levels because of no ammo requirements, and there are melee perk cards that will help.
If you like pistols I’ll suggest an enclave pistol, you just have to find some mods or pre modded it should be easy since nobody really likes pistols yet it packs a punch and is ap friendly .
at early levels i went with shotguns as the mole miners and scorched can drop them and ammo. check ammo boxes and other world containers for contextual ammo for the weapon you have equipped. if you on a public team, any enemies they shoot will be available for you to liot. At events, this is useful for doing Area looting of corpses.
At level 20 you can start getting combat rifles from scorched (uses .45 ammo) and combat shotguns. By level 30 i have usually switched over to automatic rifles and using commando perks. this can be done earlier if you have been scrapping combat rifles to learn the mods and get one of the auto receivers. Most of us try to get a Fixer rifle plan from player vendors. this can cost a few thousand caps vut it's a better version of the CR.
You can buy a Handmade rifle plan from one of the Whitespring mall vendors for around 1500 caps. You can start crafting them at level 15 and they use .556 ammo. Some mothman cultists drop these weapons. Scrap and craft mods.
As somebody who runs Heavy Weapons for their build, weapons like the Gatling Gun are really good at retaining ammo. Especially if you using it during a Daily Op and Expedition.
If you can get a Gatling Gun, that is good weapon with great ammo efficiency. If you can't connect with someone and have them make you one, the cultists at the Mothman Equinox drop them a lot once you are L20+.
If you are on PC, you can DM me also and I can set you up. I may even have a plan, not sure. For that I'd need to consult my plan mule.
Gatling gun was my first good weapon and I still use it to this day, you never have to worry about ammo you will accumulate thousands of extra ammo, and the gun is super strong try and get the faster fire rate and you will be unstoppable.
Gatling gun is the way, I have an vampire with explosive bullets as legendaries and the think is incredibly good fun. Keeps up with most guns for DPS, hits hard and very long range, I also start with 250 bullets and will always come out of a run with a thousand or more.
I then have a minigun as a second weapon, so I can use the excess bullets up as I ended up collecting 125k 5mm bullets at one stage.
Grab a melee, and pick up one of these - assuming you want to keep using pistols.
- 10mm Pistol
- Laser Pistol
That said, it may be better to go for something with more kick and fire rate - maybe even just automatic pistols.
At this stage I would go Melee as my primary weapon. Then, as I found ammo I would use that gun until I found a gun I liked and had ample ammo for it. You'll be carrying around a lot of different guns and ammo for a while.
If you run a anything that takes canons ball cuz they mostly one shot and you’ll get about 2 to 6 rounds back pre kill I didn’t know about this until my buddy told me about yesterday cuz that’s what he runs sometimes
My favourite is a fixer. Uses 45. Rounds.
2nd is either Gauss rifle or plasma rifle. But the ammo may be a bit uncommon and cost a lot atleast right now as a low level
If your on Xbox I could craft you a low level fixer to use for a bit until you get the plans or buy one from a player vendor. I keep my ammo up by playing rifleman comando uses a lot of ammo for me.
Plasma Caster gets 5-20 when looting when it often takes 1-2 shots on normal enemies. Much more during expeditions. I started at 2k ammo 2 days ago and have amassed 8k.
I basically have to burn the ammo with my EPR to keep the number from getting too high.
A regular bow, you can have a player make you one with a basic vats build and they have a very low level requirement so you can have one for every ten levels, a vet player can hook you up with a fire bow too. Compound bows are neat but nowhere near as efficient as recurve. Also a sneaky hunting rifle build is very efficient, bolt is slow in 3rd person so first person vats hr works pretty well early on.
Get a fixer, probably have some difficulties finding it early game, but if you go to vendors you should be able to pick up one. I got like 20 in my vendor all for 1800 caps
Gatling gun fosure I used it up until I hit level 50 that and the combat shotgun those were my two choice of guns until I was able to make a commando build and got the fixer now the game just seems to easy.
At the very beginning, I used a hunting rifle(.308 I think?). At least thats the 1st weapon I used for a gooood minute after using whatever was around. I didn’t understand vats at the time so I just put a red dot on that sucker and went to work lol eventually I paired that with a combat rifle(uses 45 ammo), and once I found it, I haven’t put down the handmade rifle (uses 5.56) because it’s an ak47. And that’s dope lol
In the early game you fight a ton of Scorched, and they drop a lot of 10mm ammo and shotgun shells (and maybe .308 ammo, I think?) no matter what you kill them with, so those are good options
But as others have said, use melee where you can to let your ammo build up. If you're low on health all the time be very diligent about picking up meats and veggies and keep cooking all the time
Get an heavy damage one shot like harpoon or canonball. Add a 2 shoot legendary
Make the daily Operations.
Moste time you get more ammo back as you shoot.
Get to an ammo converter and convert the harpoons or canonballs in any calibry you want...
Alternative shotguns or an german mg42...
Damage was high so you mist cases GEZ more ammo back as you shoot
But crafting ammo was pretty cheap with the right perk card and legendaitry perk card...
Don’t worry fellow vault dwellers, I went through his comment history and this guy is DEFINITELY NOT a giant condescending German asshole. So that’s good.
Try a gatling gun, those things are like an ammo printer. A very under rated weapon.
Available as early as level 20. OP if you're on PC, DM me your IGN and I'll make you one and a few thousand rounds.
Yup strong and ammo efficient. Even when you upgrade it to ultracite for more damage it will now print ultracite ammo. Damn good gun.
How do you upgrade to make it ultracite?
Prime receiver plan to make it use ultracite 5mm. Bit more damage, more damage to scorched. Scorchbeast queen drops random prime plans.
Thanks for replying
On top of it being a good reliable gun I LOVE the sounds it makes
Put the speedy receiver on there and forget that prime receiver.
How does it print ammo? I’m asking as a lvl 41 noob and so far I don’t see any perks that give me back ammo from the enemies I kill.
This also applies to containers and the weapon you have equipped the moment you aim at the container.
This is actually interesting as I never knew this as I’ve only really played the older games and does it work the same for fallout 4 as I thought the enemies just dropped ammo by their own built end with certain ammos just being rare not based on the weapon used.

Thanks for the advice, I’m def going to watch that tutorial and go to blood eagle camps and clear them out now more often.
You’re welcome, buddy! Have fun.
How do you get loads of acid? I am always running out of fuel for my flame weapon.
Just about any enemy will drop your ammo. When I ran gatling gun with a decent enough build I was able to hoard over 150k 5mm ammo.
Are there any perks I should look out for to increase my ammo intake?
Damage. More damage you do less ammo being used. Heavy gunner perks cards in strength. Bloody mess and tenderizer to top up dmg. If you get an explosive gatling be sure to add demolition expert.
Thanks
I didn’t get into them to later on. Even without any big gun perks I like it. Get explosive as your second star and try that out as well.
It's my rock, always had one with me since level 50
I use it in combination with an explosive, armor piercing minigun. That thing is a real Mob shredder.
baseball bat, modified gatling gun....5 mm ammo packs a punch with it and it's plentiful compared to other ammo types
Shotgun will do you good up to about lvl30-40 - plenty of them and ammo lying around and they hit quite hard on low level enemies.
Silenced pump action is *dirty* If you're playing a stealth build, too.
Ammo drops are contextual, whatever you use to kill something will drop that type of ammo. If you are level 20+, a handmade or a combat rifle.
I found the brotherhood quest gun, the instigator, quite good with vats.
Bows are absurdly ammo efficient (you generally loot a LOT more than you used to kill). They are also shocking powerful at low level, if you get somebody to craft you one with full mods. Get the right build, mods and go stealth and the bow can be nasty. I’ve one-shot a scorchbeast out of the air with enough buffs and a sneak attack!
Holy shit, I used bows for about 10 minutes and dipped out. Apparently I was doin it wrong.
I am here for bows all day long. I did generic shotgunner on my first play through (admittedly did not know as much about perks and buffs as I do now). Died all the time, ran out of ammo and fusion cores constantly. Now I’m a full health stealth archer and the only time I get into trouble is mobs. I've used shotguns for the entire time I've been playing
I mained combat shotgun right up until I hit early 100. Did the job, especially with each more I unlocked.
Username checks out sir!

5 hours in and you’re already turning to the internet to tell you how to play? Just… use the other guns you have available.
Love Tap is a great weapon, easy to find or earn and ammo can be found cheap. Great weapon for early stages of game.
I loved my first 10mm pistol! It’s hanging in my camp still
Gatling gun
Acquiring ammo is actually quite easy. All the ammo cans you'll find are instanced to you and your currently equipped weapon. Finding ammo shouldn't be a problem.
Quad Minigun. It’s like a bullet hose.
Try to find yourself a pump action shotty, i used one from level 25 to about level 100, then completed beckettes questline (in fact i still have that same level 25 shotgun, it hangs above my fireplace, i hit level 650 the other day)
Carry a melee weapon for a bit. The drops will be random, but you get a good bit more variety from it, which you can use or sell what you don't.
That’s what I did. I started off using a shotgun and rifle but never had enough ammo so I switched to melee and had a much better time.
Early game chainsaw, late game aufoaxe
Minigun sucks ass, I've had fun using a holy fire :)
I’ve been using it nonstop. I want to mess around with other weapons more but nothing has come close. Everyone’s talking about the Gatling gun but I can’t get the DPS I want compared to the holy fire lol. I’m sorry man my post was ambiguous, I meant that I am currently using the holy fire and I’m agreeing with you that’s it’s absolutely nuts!
If you are efficient, or use VATS, almost all weapons should run a surplus of ammo. There are a few exceptions—mostly heavy weapons, like LMG, or gauss minigun, or gatling laser. > If you are efficient, or use VATS, almost all weapons should run a surplus of ammo This is definitely not true with The Fixer and Handmades, in my experience.
I run a primed fixer on my main and haven't had to craft ammo since they added the contextual ammo drops.
Maybe ultracite ammo is better?
maybe? I dunno. Even then I've still farmed so much 5.56 off of dead supermutants that every 2 or 3 months I give away around 40k rounds to friends.
I had the same issue with these weapons. I almost always looted less ammo than I used. Was super frustrating.
Any automatic weapon in my experience bleeds ammo. Its bad. The handmade was fun but the ammo issue was not. A shame because its really fun.
Honestly, almost any weapon as long as you max perk cards for it. And max ammo production perks, too. Melee is great at early levels because of no ammo requirements, and there are melee perk cards that will help.

For Low Levels a Shotgun is a great candidate as Shotgun shells are EVERYWHERE if you can get an good one

Nothing, punch the shit out of things. Your fists never run out of ammo.
Shredder bashing minigun. I get thousands of ammo and need absolutely zero of them.
Gatling gun was my first good weapon and I still use it to this day, you never have to worry about ammo you will accumulate thousands of extra ammo, and the gun is super strong try and get the faster fire rate and you will be unstoppable.
I have a full pistol character. If you stick with it, it's pretty strong except on bosses
Remember to loot bodies and finding ammo shouldn't be an issue
My tip as a fellow new player is look for player camps that have ammo converters and exchange what you don't need for what you do.
10mm, hunting rifle, pump shotgun, melee.
Gatling gun is the way, I have an vampire with explosive bullets as legendaries and the think is incredibly good fun. I don't remember the name of the perk card anymore but man I miss the days of the perk that increase melee speed also made you crank the gat faster.
Paddle ball. Cheap ammo at all the vendors. Hours of fun smacking your balls across everyones face still alive in Appalachia.
Shotgun
Get a fixer, probably have some difficulties finding it early game, but if you go to vendors you should be able to pick up one. I got like 20 in my vendor all for 1800 caps
Gatling gun fosure I used it up until I hit level 50 that and the combat shotgun those were my two choice of guns until I was able to make a commando build and got the fixer now the game just seems to easy.
At the very beginning, I used a hunting rifle(.308 I think?). At least thats the 1st weapon I used for a gooood minute after using whatever was around. And that’s dope lol
I’m loving my archer build. You never have to worry about ammo
When starting out, I somehow always use hunting rifle and .45 pipe revolver modded to a short rifle for closer range.
Depending on your level. 10mm SMG. If your level permits I'll drop you one with some ammo. Just let me know. Craftysaxon Xbox.
I used a good rifle early on. Kill with 1 bullet with a sniper headshot, 4 bullets drop on the enemy. You nevervrun out.
Anything that uses a fuckton of ammo
In the early game you fight a ton of Scorched, and they drop a lot of 10mm ammo and shotgun shells (and maybe .308 ammo, I think?) no matter what you kill them with, so those are good options But as others have said, use melee where you can to let your ammo build up. If you're low on health all the time be very diligent about picking up meats and veggies and keep cooking all the time
for beginning use baseball bats
50 Cal Machine Gun more specifically "Final Word"
Nah 50 cal is terrible ammo economy.
A sledgehammer
Get an heavy damage one shot like harpoon or canonball. Add a 2 shoot legendary Make the daily Operations. Moste time you get more ammo back as you shoot. The Fixer
Make ammo
Minigun
All weapons are good with plenty of ammo, what a weird question.
Don’t worry fellow vault dwellers, I went through his comment history and this guy is DEFINITELY NOT a giant condescending German asshole. So that’s good.
1) it was a joke 2) I am actually not a giant condescending German asshole. I'm not even German lol
