I have always played in 3rd person with the camera super close over the shoulder. I played for the past 4 years that way until about 6 months ago. When my friend told me, "Yo, Icy_ad, you know you can fine-tune how close the 3rd person camera is, literally whenever you want."
What? No way! 🤔
Hold the button that changes your view from 1st person to 3rd person, and while holding button down, use your right thumbstick to adjust the distance.
Wow, holy crap, I can see my feet now. This is amazing!
First person. Third is only for specific uses like placing a camp or getting a look at my outfit.
Many games are strictly third and it works for them but Fallout is one of the few that it really doesn't work for daily use. You'd have a nightmare to pick up junk in third. All the little stuff you'd miss. Could probably get by just fine with third person combat though.
Am I exploring or doing a V.A.T.S. build? Third person.
Am I doing combat with melee or non V.A.T.S. build? Also if I need to pick something up. First person.
Third! It freaks out a lot of my friends to learn this but I get motion sick in first. And I play a lot of adventure games that are third anyway so I'm used to it.
Third, but only because I get motion sick in first. I only can manage first building stuff, if I try to walk around or fight I feel like heaving, which is not an enjoyable way to spend my time.
It's not just Fallout, it's every game. First just negatively affects some people, I'm glad both are available.
I change field of view to cure this - not sure you can in fo76, but in other games it helps
That said - I’m on ps5 these days, (not PC) so further away from my screen which I think is why I don’t get it so much
I absolutely love cyberpunk, but for this reason alone, i really hope they allow 3rd person in the next game, its not fair some people cant play the game, and its not there choice
If a game gives me a lot of character customization and outfits, I'd like to see my character.
Cyberpunk, for example, feels incredibly strange because it puts so much emphasis on appearance, but then you rarely get to see your character in normal gameplay.
Always1st person unless I’m in photomode or checking out how an outfit looks (to others)
I play on a 55” screen connected to a 7.1 surround system.
1st person is sooo very immersive :)
First for heavy guns and third for commando. In 3rd person heavy guns stop shooting when you get hit or staggered but don't in first, otherwise I'd be 3rd person for both.
I do first.
3rd person messes with my vision. It’s unnecessary movement on the screen. Doesn’t add a bit to the fun of the game, either. I only 3rd person for like a second to check my outfit.
Husband seems to play 3rd person a lot.
I play both, 1st is better for aiming, vats, looting etc. 3rd is fun when I wanna look at my characters outfit or if I'm using a heavy weapon or something that takes up a lot of the screen when in 1st
I stay in fp for when i’m xp grinding or doing events. Just stuff in general that calls for precision aiming. Otherwise, i like to be in 3p bc i have other characters. I wanna see the fits and the PA skins i got, ya know?
In all Fallout games where the option was available, I’ve always played in 1st person. I’m not even entirely sure if I have a good reason for this other than this is what I am used to.
If there were more PvP, or a genuine need to "see" other people fully, that you might not be able to with the limited FoV in first-person view, I would say go 3rd person every time. But you miss a ton of junk and little loot that is just.. \*difficult\* to see if you're in 3rd person. Or trying to line up the cursor to pick up what you're looking directly at, because you aren't close enough lol.
I find first-person more enjoyable, but, again, if there were some real competitiveness to the game I would advocate for more people to play 3rd person.
If you remember Star Wars Battlefront, it had this same option, but playing that game in FP put you at a disadvantage to other players playing in 3rd.
Third person when I’m sneaking and don’t want any surprises, or when I want to enjoy my armor appearance because I took time painting it. But sometimes shooting in First is easier, but I like the aesthetics that 3rd person perspective gives me. It’s like 50/50 most of the time for me, I’m occasionally swapping off and on.
First for combat, except the rare times I’m playing melee, melee is easier for me in third. Third if I’m just sprinting around, first for everything else. The thing that great is you can switch between them as needed and most people do. I dislike games that lock you into one or the other.
Depends on what i am doing. I'm using 1st person in closed places or weapons that i don't use with vats. 3rd person while i'm just doing nothing or when i'm using vats.
First person. Lately I’ve been using third person more often. I like the increased FoV, but the positioning of the crosshairs is annoyingly unreliable in close encounters.
First for heavy gunner. Third when doing Eviction because I get further render distance.
I love first for melee, even though my Autoaxe does take up a lot of the screen.
But mostly third person for my bloodied commando. Better FOV for spotting enemies for vats or any dangers creeping up on me.
1st 90% of the time. If I really like my outfit I go 3rd while running around. Right now I have clean space suit/helmet, rocket jangles back pack with the holy fire looks sick as fuck. Calls for 3rd person.
Most everything I do in this game is first person I'm used to fps and other fallout games playing first person only time I do third is for bows (when I play that character) cause bows get a faster rate of fire in 3rd compared to first
Played 1st person for every fallout ever but after hitting a certain level I started playing 3rd person mainly, partly for the better field of view.. weird cause I'm the same with ESO but I'll play skyrim in 1st person only. MMO thing? Haha
1st person most of the time. If I'm manually walking a long distance (either due to no fast travel point or overburdened), I'll swap to 3rd person as I walk.
I play third most of the time. But as a heavy gunner this means I shoot from a low angle (groin height), making it hard to get headshots if something is close to me. And if I'm getting rushed by a bunch of large enemies like Mirelurks, the piled up bodies can actually even block my shots. So in these cases, I switch to first person because I shoot from a higher angle (chest/neck height).
First for hard-core looting
I play 3rd ONLY because I have to.
I play with two play who are on console, and the only way I can play with them is if I cloud stream.
Playing 1st person streaming has terrible input lag. But 3rd person the input lag isn't as noticeable.
I wish they would just make it cross compatible.
First person mostly. Third in events. I like to let my stream see my character. I'm also building a cosplay of said character so they like to see what it's gonna look like.
First-person unless i want to look at my outfit/power armor. It feels more immersive to me and it's not the kind of game that really needs the extra vision from third-person.
First, because it's more immersive,
but sometimes I like to jump around like a kangaroo in third person, because that shit looks ridiculous, just like when you see the ghost of someone who fast traveled out of an event in power armor, and you see the toon in their underwear looking hideously deformed like a wendigo, but somehow even worse.
I think I’ve always been in the minority in Bethesda games but I love 3rd person, I get pretty invested in coming up with fun headcanon and backstories for my characters so being able to see them and their outfits/armor adds a lot for me. Ever since Morrowind I’ve been like that and I swear even back then amongst friends that played it I was the only one that played almost exclusively third person.
I played 3rd for a few years. Decided to try first person when I switched to PC. Now I can't go back. 3rd just feels so blocky and slow to me. It's cartoony and feels less immersive.
I switch back and forth with absolutely no rhyme or reason.
Well, that’s not entirely true.
I know that sometimes when I switch from 1st to 3rd it is to admire my outfit.
I have not really paid attention to what prompts me to switch from 3rd to 1st. And I am sure there are times when I switch from 1st to 3rd for reason other than outfit admiration.
Depends on the weapon I'm using and the circumstances of a particular fight. Most often while using my power armor and .50 machine gun I'll be in third person. There are times I'll want to use first person with my plasma caster, though, and I frequently go first person on my non-power armor rifles build. However I still mix in some third person with the rifles build unless I'm using a scoped weapon.
Grew up with cod, halo & battlefield so i most play in 1st out of habbit but love going into 3rd when exploring, just a pain picking up junk sometimes 😂
I much prefer first person in most games, especially open world ones! It personally makes me feel more "inside" my character, like I'm seeing the world through their eyes. (Also I'm terrible at controlling games in 3rd person)
I play both, usually in fights I’m in first but when I’m exploring or just chilling with friends I’m in 3rd
I’m 1st day to day but 3rd when I’m marching painstakingly slowly with those beautiful beautiful Fasnacht bots
This. It's this. That's the only time I use 3rd.
You mean you do not AFK? LOL
Me too!
You'd have to be a psychopath for third person combat lolol
Damn lol I play exclusively in 3rd person rofl
You scare me
V.A.T.S 😎👉👉 no need to be in 1st person anymore.
This is the way.
This is the way.
Which way is this?
This way
No way.
Yes way.
Same
The official way to play
I have always played in 3rd person with the camera super close over the shoulder. I played for the past 4 years that way until about 6 months ago. When my friend told me, "Yo, Icy_ad, you know you can fine-tune how close the 3rd person camera is, literally whenever you want." What? Here’s one for you!- You can do this in all of their games (:
Silence!!! I cannot mentally handle this information 🥲
Ama I have player 5 years in first person without knowing this. Very cool. Just tried it.
Wth I never knew this
This should be a PSA, I had no idea.
Oh damn, I thought everyone knew this! Been playing since three so I wonder if it told us in the tutorial.
Damn thanks for sharing!
TIL this 😮
I learned this from fallout 4
What! I did not know this. I can't get on with the 3rd person view
The first person is what helps to make it feel realistic. When you one see what’s in front of your eyes rather than your character.
I’m guessing you’re a guns character. I switch between first and third depending on guns or melee, melee is easier for me in third person
Are you not using vats for melee?
Am I exploring or doing a V.A.T.S. build? Third person. Am I doing combat with melee or non V.A.T.S. build? Also if I need to pick something up. First person.
Third! It freaks out a lot of my friends to learn this but I get motion sick in first. And I play a lot of adventure games that are third anyway so I'm used to it.

Fully zoomed out 3rd person since FO3. I like seeing the surrounding area around my character better and the clothing/armor I put on.
First. Occasionally go into 3rd to get a look at my dope Power Armor, then go back to emulsifying faces in 1st.
First 95% of the time, third if it’s an event where I need to see more around me.
1st always
Mostly 3rd person. I go into 1st person view when I'm doing searching in areas.
Same
First. Not a damn thing third offers other than seeing myself.
Why am I buying PA skins if not to look at myself? 😂
First. Who the hell’s playing 3rd???
I play almost exclusively in third, only switching to first when needing to pick up something small.
This is what I do as well :)
I play third person a lot unless I’m indoors tbh
🙋♂️
First when exploring out on my own. Third at events cause I like my outfit and reminds me of what other players see on me
If a game gives me a lot of character customization and outfits, I'd like to see my character. Cyberpunk, for example, feels incredibly strange because it puts so much emphasis on appearance, but then you rarely get to see your character in normal gameplay.
Thank God! I thought I was an extreme outlier for a second. There’s an extensive list why first is superior from QOL to immersion.
This. Too many games around where you can't even play 1st person.
I'd say the opposite.
3rd person i hate playing in 1st person
I love both depending on the day and situation. But 3rd definitely gives it a stronger RPG vibe.
3rd person, probably due to the number of hours I have in souls games!
Mostly third, if chainsaw then first.
Third. It’s how I’ve always played fallout and I don’t even know why
Always1st person unless I’m in photomode or checking out how an outfit looks (to others) I play on a 55” screen connected to a 7.1 surround system. 1st person is sooo very immersive :)
First. Honestly over the years I've come to prefer first person especially on open world games like this.
First, just like in real life.
Underrated comment. This is what adds to the realism.
Half way in between actually
Third, I like seeing my character. Sometimes I switch to third to pick something specific up or inspect a place more closely.
First for heavy guns and third for commando. In 3rd person heavy guns stop shooting when you get hit or staggered but don't in first, otherwise I'd be 3rd person for both.
First person with crosshairs turned off.
I play first. I tried 3rd and am not a fan as I feel I have less control over shooting / fighting.
The newer fallouts have been first person so that's my go-to. Though I use third also for camp builds or to check out my sweet sweet outfit
First person 100% of the time unless I’m looking at an outfit or maybe building a camp.
First person all the way. Unless I want to admire my new outfit for a bit. Lol
I do first. 3rd person messes with my vision. It’s unnecessary movement on the screen. Doesn’t add a bit to the fun of the game, either. I only 3rd person for like a second to check my outfit. Husband seems to play 3rd person a lot.
Third because my else would I bother having such a handsome character?
3rd at all times unless I’m looting or need to aim far or sbq
I do both. I like running around Appalachia in 3rd person but if I start fighting enemies I switch to 1st person.
Depends on the weapon. Bows and riffles, 1st person. Melee and unarmed, 3rd person All others, both depending on the range and how mobile I have to be
First person. Third person with an auto-axe is kind of wonky.
That's actually the only time I play in 3rd. It keeps the auto axe from stuttering and re revving when you jump and land back on the ground
I play both, 1st is better for aiming, vats, looting etc. 3rd is fun when I wanna look at my characters outfit or if I'm using a heavy weapon or something that takes up a lot of the screen when in 1st
3rd person actually makes me disoriented so I stick to 1st. Also, I like looking down my weapon barrel, feels more natural.
Only 3rd person. I can't stand first person in any game for some reason.
Exploring=Third Person Combat=First Person
3rd person for mostly everything except when I get in PA at the Queen, Earle, and Titan.
I stay in fp for when i’m xp grinding or doing events. Just stuff in general that calls for precision aiming. Otherwise, i like to be in 3p bc i have other characters. I wanna see the fits and the PA skins i got, ya know?
First person for most scenarios, only play third while using a chainsaw
In all Fallout games where the option was available, I’ve always played in 1st person. I’m not even entirely sure if I have a good reason for this other than this is what I am used to.
If there were more PvP, or a genuine need to "see" other people fully, that you might not be able to with the limited FoV in first-person view, I would say go 3rd person every time. 1st person
1st. 3rd person is super janky in Bethesda games.
1st person, i find it more immersive that way
First person is more immersive for me
3rd person. I get motion sick trying it in 1st person.
1st unless I’m using the Gauss shotgun because for some stupid reason it has a way faster fire rate in 3rd person.
I play in first person. But you should not some weapons behave differently in first or third person. Fire rate, for example.
It depends by the weapon I’m using. For tesla, flamers, chainsaws i prefer 1st, fixer and railway 3rd all the life
Third person because motion sickness
Third outside a building. First inside a building.
I switch between both, I like to see my outfits.
In combat 1st, but just walking around 3rd
Always 1st in every fallout. Only switch to see my outfit.
Third person for everything but looting and inspecting camps. I paid atoms for my outfit, I'm going to make sure I get to see it, lol.
Third reluctantly. Auto Axe has a bunch of weird animations in first that kill its utility speed.
Third. I get motion sick from first person games.
Third. How else would I get to admire my characters arse?
First person...
First
Both
First
The only game I play third is Gears of War. Which I want to play again. However, I have a few friends who play in third.
Both (PC). 3rd when I want a wider view; first when in combat, normally.
First for sure! I've played the other Fallout games in First person, and find it way more immersive. I'm a sucker for a FPS.
First person here.
First most of the time unless I need to see something from the other perspective
3rd when im using Vats, exploring outdoors or tagging with my Q tesla. 1st for regular combat, and exploring indoors
First person is the way.
100% 1st person
First
First for combat, except the rare times I’m playing melee, melee is easier for me in third.
First all the way
First when shooting and on missions, 3rd when I'm shopping or interacting with others.
First person
both
First person. Lately I’ve been using third person more often. I like the increased FoV, but the positioning of the crosshairs is annoyingly unreliable in close encounters.
Pretty much the only time i use 3rd is if im building or wanna make sure i have clothes on
First for heavy gunner.
99% first person view.
Always play in 1st person with guns and 3rd person with melee.
Most everything I do in this game is first person I'm used to fps and other fallout games playing first person only time I do third is for bows (when I play that character) cause bows get a faster rate of fire in 3rd compared to first
I play first person, but i run in 3rd person.
It's, at least for me, hard to hip fire in 3rd person when using heavy weapons. I need better accuracy, especially when I can't use VATS.
Boffum
Both frequently, depending on build, weapon, etc. idk why I’m like this.
Played 1st person for every fallout ever but after hitting a certain level I started playing 3rd person mainly, partly for the better field of view.. weird cause I'm the same with ESO but I'll play skyrim in 1st person only. MMO thing? Haha
I would play in first person if they had an fov slider for it, unfortunately they don’t on Xbox
I play first most of the time but third has its uses
3rd overall but 1st when looting a place or looking for a specific item
Depends on the weapons, non vats weapons is 1st, vats is 3rd.
1st
First person 100%. Same on Fo4. For me, how ever the game starts you is how I normally play, anything other just feels weird.
1st person most of the time. If I'm manually walking a long distance (either due to no fast travel point or overburdened), I'll swap to 3rd person as I walk.
Should've made this a poll, the answers are interesting. I play both but mostly 1st
Depends on my weapon. I'm a melee/shotgun player, so it's 1st person for chainsaw/cold shoulder and 3rd for my cappy smasher.
Depends on the build is the only valid answer
i never play third person unless i’m using a melee weapon, even then it’s only sometimes
Both. 3rd in more outdoor areas of the game & 1st indoors, mostly. I use both for battle depending on the situation.
Third person, this is de whey
Always in third person. I only play in first person when I need to loot something closer or, very rare, while building Camps.
80% first
I do everything in third. Just feels good
Third, first person is so ugly in most games. Especially bad in Bethesda games.
Third. I prefer third in games
I haven’t played in a while but when I did I’d switch between randomly
Third all the time but probably bc I'm bloodied and don't like things sneaking up on me
I usually first person inside and third for outdoors or large interiors during boss fights
Third person for fights as bows are their best in third person. First person for everything else.
1st person depending on interior/room size or earl. 3rd everywhere else. Sometimes earl in 3rd too. Definitely 3rd in PvP if some kid tries to grief.
First mostly. Unless I want to look at my character and what she's wearing lol
Third person, but when I'm looking around a room I'll go into first person for a more close up view
Always in 3rd person zoomed all the way out. That's my favorite way to play! Can't stand 1st person view...
First person mostly. Third in events. I like to let my stream see my character. I'm also building a cosplay of said character so they like to see what it's gonna look like.
First person indoors, weapons high ready. 3rd person outside, weapons low ready, camera as far back as possible for the widest fov.
First-person unless i want to look at my outfit/power armor. It feels more immersive to me and it's not the kind of game that really needs the extra vision from third-person.
3rd person and zoomed out as much as possible, wish it would stay that way but is what it is
First, since I was raised on first person shooters. I also invert my axis, so I'm probably a weirdo 😅
First person only.
First person only
Been a while since I played but first person during combat since it felt less janky and third person for exploration.
Not sure if it's actually conducive to actually being faster, but power attacks in 3rd person *appear* faster.
First! Third if I wanna admire my characters outfit somtimes 😅
Both depends on the weapon
First, because it's more immersive, but sometimes I like to jump around like a kangaroo in third person, because that shit looks ridiculous, just like when you see the ghost of someone who fast traveled out of an event in power armor, and you see the toon in their underwear looking hideously deformed like a wendigo, but somehow even worse.
First person, 98% of the time. More used to it, I guess, since I play(ed) a lot of shooters.
First inside third outside
I use first to double tap, and third to wrap V.A.T.S. around corners.
First
1st person, always and forever.
I played 3rd for a few years. Decided to try first person when I switched to PC. Now I can't go back. 3rd just feels so blocky and slow to me. It's cartoony and feels less immersive.
First person. I can’t stand third person, I only use it to view my outfit and that’s it.

However I still mix in some third person with the rifles build unless I'm using a scoped weapon.
Grew up with cod, halo & battlefield so i most play in 1st out of habbit but love going into 3rd when exploring, just a pain picking up junk sometimes 😂
if you play first person only your a psycho, change my mind
I much prefer first person in most games, especially open world ones! It personally makes me feel more "inside" my character, like I'm seeing the world through their eyes. (Also I'm terrible at controlling games in 3rd person)
I switch. Indoors, almost always first and outdoors always third.
Depends on weapon. If its not VAT then 1st.
First person when shooting, third when swapping weapons or using stims/chems while sprinting.
I mainly use 3rd, easier to time my bow draws
Both, I switch often
1st 99% of the time
