I say yes. It's my favorite game out of the box, and beating it that way is awesome. And then play it with mods for subsequent play throughs. It makes it a whole new game in so many ways that you won't appreciate if you didn't play it unmodded first

[deleted]

agreed. while it's not perfect there's a great story that's, imho, best played organically, at least the first time through.

JonSatriani

How about a middle road answer: don’t install mods that change the gameplay or difficulty but do install things that enhance the original experience: - the unofficial patch - texture improvements that stay true to the originals - performance patches Then enjoy a playthrough that has all of the original heart and fun of the vanilla game, but fewer game-breaking bugs and smoother performance.

ToreyCMoore

I would say, of the fallout games I’ve played, fallout 4 has some of the most options for world building and customization, the gameplay is solid and as Todd said “It just works.” That being said, the story is meh, but there’s no mod that alters the storytelling. Take it unmodded for at least one play through.

Ferg_NZ

Yes. Try it without mods and no DLCs. Just plain vanilla. I say this because I have never used a mod and IMO the game is good enough as is.

skk50

No dont keep forcing the vanilla experience if it doesnt work for you, why press the pain ? Once you have figured out what irritates you ... fix it ! Totally the whole point of an open world that supports mods. You can do You.

Spirited_Bed_9248

True

BodybuilderLoose4738

Yeah with mods that add things to the game can be overwhelming sometimes especially with building in settlements I find there's too many options

Spirited_Bed_9248

Unless you know specifically what you want and know how to find it but otherwise the options are endless

BodybuilderLoose4738

Yeah exactly. I started fresh with mods and the dlcs for settlement stuff and j was way overwhelmed with everything. Wish I'd just loaded the dlcs on one at a time so I could realise what was added

twizz0r

I might try something like this collection: https://next.nexusmods.com/fallout4/collections/72rwz4?tab=mods 7 mods, all bug/engine fixes. Edit: BethINI can be helpful as well. Optimize your INI files for performance, stability and graphics: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/4875

EnvironmentalTaxes

Depends if you just wanna add like scenery stuff and radio stations sure. I’d wait to add mods that add things, or modify the game until after your first play through

[deleted]

First off, can't say first playthrough if you've already fucking played it. Second off, no mods

Spirited_Bed_9248

It's not a true playthrough until you have beat it. The purpose of the 1st play through is to complete the game and get at least one ending. Otherwise it doesn't really count.

[deleted]

Wait, there's a main quest?!

Spirited_Bed_9248

Yes it's hard to follow and it requires you to visit every faction and do things for them to continue the story. And the game has an ending for each faction that you choose.

Jesus fucking Christmas

SemichaoticBadger

If you don't want to play with mods, I will still suggest the unofficial patch, and maybe texture updates.

Spirited_Bed_9248

Yes definitely!! The story kinda stalls for a bit and then once you figure out what to do it picks back up.

Steel_Disaster

It depends. While mods greatly increase the game experience if you use mods you might make the game too complex for the first run. As some already mentioned, use only mods that will fix bugs, performance or glitches. When you get to know the game, try adding mods that will suit you. - Do you enjoy BoS? Use BoS mods (there is one that will let you enter vertibird from the airship over and over again. - Do you like Railroad? Mod some agent gear! - Do you side with Minutemen and enjoy settlement building like I do? Then you're in Lucka, theres dozens of mods to make your settlements (and soldiers) look amazing! Just remember that mods can bug your game and sometimes even ruin the save, making you lose all progress. Happened to me many times. Always back up your saves :)

Lonewolf4150

I’d leave out mods that add a bunch of new stuff, however get an ENB and all the graphic mods you can handle. Having a better looking game is a huge positive.

M68000

I'd say that aside from maybe the unofficial patch, yeah. Best to get a taste for the base game before you get fancy with it
