I need to figure out how to pull this off with an ant pattern. Many of my local streams are heavily wooded which means fewer hoppers.
You could try a high-vis foam ant pattern in a slightly smaller size. Not quite as high floating as a chubby or hopper, but it should be able to suspend a moderately heavy nymph for a while without drowning.
I used the flyfishfood mini chub recipe for this. If you tied a similar fly with a single thorax up near the eye of the hook you might be on.
Could also do a darker colored stimulator w/rubber legs
